Pressley Wright arrives in St. Joseph, Missouri, expecting to secure a business deal that will finally put him on solid ground. But when the owner reveals his startling terms—marry his daughter or the deal is off—Luella refuses and Pressley’s plans fall apart.

An unexpected accident leaves Luella unable to work, and Pressley finds himself stepping into the company he thought he had given up. As they navigate her father’s illness, Luella’s injury, and their uneasy partnership, sparks begin to fly. Forced into close quarters, they strike a bargain of their own. Allison Wells is an author, wife, and mother who is also a logophile (a lover of words).
The desire to write came early for Allison. After graduating from Clemson, Allison became a newspaper reporter. Tired of constantly writing bad news, she began writing novels. Now, Allison writes for regional publications and enjoys writing southern novels with elements of faith.
In her writing, Allison feels led to bring an element of reality to her readers. She recognizes that living a Christian life does not mean everything is rosy all the time, and she wants to represent that with her writing, while still wrapping things up with a happy ending.
Allison's motto is Life is Short, Eat the Oreos.

RESPECT HIM AND LOVE WILL COME

The story is part of the Honorable Husbands, a multi-author series. Each story is a stand-alone and can be read in any order. These are clean, Western historical tales in which mitigating circumstances result in couples seeking a mail-order spouse.

Louis Key is dying, and he needs to make sure his only child, his daughter, Luella, is taken care of. Unbeknownst to her, he placed an ad to sell his family-owned printing business, but the company comes with unknown stipulations, revealed when Pressley Wright arrives to discuss it with him.

“Mr. Wright. Come immediately if you’re interested in purchasing the St. Joe Printing Company. You must agree to all my terms and stay in St. Joseph for at least five years. I hope to meet you at the station, but I am not sure my health will be up to it. If not, the address is 950 North Second Street. It’s north of the station. I will be ready and waiting for you there. –Louis Key”

Pressley Wright is a third son and didn’t like his options at home in Virginia, so he learned the trade of printing as an apprentice. Now, with the money he has saved, he is ready to have his own business. Traveling to St. Joseph, Missouri will come with more than just a business if he is to purchase the company.

Luella was an only child, losing her mother when she was ten and raised by her father. She has worked alongside him in the business. They have hired two brothers to help out with the orders as her father’s health declines. She believes the business will be hers someday—is she in for a shocking surprise.

This was a fun story that I was looking forward to after reading Opal’s story, Mail-Order Journalist. While Luella isn’t happy with what her father is proposing, she is at a loss for what to do. When Pressley stays in St. Joe at a boardinghouse, he comes and helps with the printing, proving invaluable—but a marriage to keep the business in the family, which she isn’t sure about. I love watching Pressley and Luella interact, getting to know each other, and learning that they are more alike. While their beginning is rough, he proves himself to be a man of character, with her in mind. Maybe, father did know what was best! The next story by this author will be Mail-Order Novelist—featuring friend, Celia Turner.

“I dream of what we can do with this company if we actually work together instead of alongside each other.”

A bit of a twist on a mail order bride story, the bride’s father is making the arrangements. Not what Pressley is expecting when he shows up to buy a printing company and definitely not what Luella has in mind. When push comes to shove, dad gets his way and we’re in for a fun story. I enjoyed watching them come to the conclusion we all know is going to happen.
