The King #3

War of The Kings

Rate this book
Annalise has been taken, this time by the beast king Elias, who followed her from his kingdom to cause discord between her and Cyrus just as they were beginning to understand one another. After Annalise is gravely wounded during an escape attempt, she is left with a scattered memory and no sense of her previous self. But still, deep inside, she knows Elias is not who he claims to be.

Now, she must find a way to escape Elias and return to a life that holds both good and bad memories of the “white-haired” man. What she doesn’t know is that the man she dreams of is no man but a beast—the king of beasts. And he will bring death and destruction with him to bring her home.

The dark journey continues with the third installment of "The King" series

Finallyyyyyy, I finished this. 😭😭(pat myself in the back) 😭😭
After weeks of putting it off, because there was a part that completely made me lose interest, I finally made it to the end. I loved the previous books in this series, but not this one. This one left me fuming by the end. I was genuinely excited when it was finally published, but here we are.

Everything was going fine-actually, more than fine- for most of the book. I was enjoying the pacing, the familiar world, and I was reminded why I fell in love with this series in the first place. Annalise, in books one and two, was bold, strategic, powerful. She was everything I wanted in a strong female lead. But around 80% into this book, everything unraveled.

⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!

The ending genuinely turned me off. So much so that, as much as I enjoyed the majority of the book, I have no desire to pick up the next one. It completely shattered my motivation to keep reading. I ended up in a full-blown slump, abandoning not just this book, but even my other current read.

Now, I’m back to losing myself in Dramione fanfics on AO3. Lol. Of course, if I’m in a slump, Dramione to the rescue. 🤣

Well.
That was underwhelming.

If you’re interested in this book, I’m going to assume that you’ve at least read the first book (hopefully second one too) so I will be referencing them in my review as if you have.

Maybe I’m being too critical because, admittedly, I went into this with fairly high expectations, but for the most part, this ENTIRE installment was a waste of story. The ONLY thing that happened to really move the plot along occurred in maybe the last 10-15% of the book, which only leads me to believe that the author is intentionally dragging it out. Not to mention, the direction she chose to take this one after the second one’s cliffhanger, feels a lot like backpedaling. Meaning, she undid the entire storyline she had previously laid out. The WHOLE thing.

STOP 🛑 Major Spoilers Ahead!!! 🛑 STOP

So within the first couple of pages, Annalise is force fed a cup of tea that immediately causes her to miscarry her baby. So that important element of the story is now null and void. Annalise is devastated, which leads to rage and she attacks and nearly kills Elias with the use of Cyrus’s seal (whatever the hell that thing is— still has never really been clarified in my opinion). Elias avoids death and precedes to drop Annalise over the side of the balcony… or window, as it was repeatedly interchanged throughout the text when being referenced throughout the rest of the story. 🤷‍♀️

And guess what!!!

Every bone in her body shatters on impact and her skull cracks open, leaving her with amnesia/memory loss. She awakens and the last thing she remembers is literally Cyrus attacking at the edge of the river when she lived in the village.
Yep. Reverting her character all the way back to book one… 🤦‍♀️

The whole first half of the book turns into what feels like a bizarre, incoherent inner monologue from Annalise. At some point she pieces together different things that Elias has let slip when popping off at the mouth and realizes that “home” is across the sea. Then she rambles on about planting a plan in Elias’s mind to try to take over Cyrus’s kingdom, which he eventually does set out to do, but in no way did it feel like it was because of Annalise and her stealthy skills of inception. 🤔😬

"Elias has made a mistake bringing me to my homeland. Now, I have nothing standing in the way of my escape except timing. I know this place. I grew up here, and though I grew up in a particular region of this land, all I have to do is make it to familiar surroundings."

Her inner rantings sound mighty confident for a chick that supposedly doesn't have much of a memory and barely traveled past her village before she met Cyrus....and then once she did meet him was enslaved, which didn't exactly allow for much of an opportunity to freely roam... I'm just saying.

So, yes, Elias has sailed back with Annalise to Cyrus’s kingdom and starts rounding up “people like her” --which apparently are “hybrids” created from hunters and trinkets.

[ SIDE NOTE: Annalise’s origins are just too loosely referenced for my liking. The concept is not clearly laid out, much like the problem with Cyrus’s seal, and I can’t help but associate it with lazy writing. It’s like the author had a vague idea, but didn’t want to take the time to actually fully develop it— yet still chose to use it anyway, thinking, “Well, that’s good enough.” And no. It wasn’t. ]

While Elias is doing this, he gets word (how, I don’t know because who would have even been alive to send word) that Cyrus had simultaneously sailed to his land and had single-handedly wiped the entire continent out using his beast form abilities. Elias snaps and tries to kill Annalise again. He nearly succeeds, but she manages to barely escape with her life. It’s in this broken state that Dimitri and Ciel find her in the market about to be branded. This is how she’s reunited with her family/“people”. And aside from one other brief attack, and his quick demise at the end during the introduction of a new threat, Elias’s active participation in the story is abandoned. It was not what I was expecting and I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Where was my big standoff between the two?! I was so anxious to see what Cyrus was going to do to him and then got nothing. NOTHING.

I also want to quickly touch on Annalise and how much she frustrated me in this one. I get it, for the most part, she didn’t have her memories and was reacting to everyone accordingly. But I don’t think her personality matched her character from the one from the first book either, which is what you would think would be the case if she had all her memories prior to the beginning of that one. Then she gets her memories back and SHOULD remember what happened every time she’s disobeyed Cyrus in the past: DISASTER. But does she consider this? Nope. She betrays him yet again and gets them into a terrible situation. Again. Just because she refuses to listen and/or learn from her past mistakes. This can only happen so many times within a series before a dislike for the character permanently sets in.

"In all my life, through every wrong that has been dealt to me, I have never had my revenge. It has all backfired one way or another, especially since Cyrus has been on the receiving end of that revenge."

So she's acknowledging that all her shit usually backfires, yet there she goes...trying more shit.

And for anyone that cares, yes, Cyrus has figured out his feelings for Annalise. He declares it, sticks to it, and does some minor groveling— BUT it was such a 360* from his original character, it didn’t exactly feel natural. But that could just be the way I interpreted it since I have so many prominent memories of his cruel behavior towards her rather than any with tenderness (which could be a result of how long ago it was that I actually read the 2nd book and I, generally, don’t do rereads).

“Because despite all of this, I still love you. Do you think I traipsed all this way, fighting an unknown enemy for your life just to lie down when he says it isn’t worth anything? I won’t let us be separated again.” he says.

Just to sum it up, there were very little new developments added to the plot in this third book. The characters repeated a lot of inner monologues and it just overall was not very satisfying, considering how much (and how long) I was looking forward to it.

Bummer.

The path to get to this point has been grueling, and quite honestly, I still can't fully wrap my mind around it.
Yeah, you and me both, Annalise.😂

So messed up. These two . . .
I feel nothing for her, yet everything.
And for crying out loud, I don't know how she did it, but the author managed to raise the stakes with this instalment.

Mind blown.

When the fourth and final book comes out, I'll have to re-read the series - AGAIN - and I'm sure I'll be just as obsessed as ever.

i really want a standalone spin off of my half breed husband dimitri and felix like plsssss 🛐 felix made my man turn gay for him. i NEED their story.

dawn of the queen better be the last finale book of the series. anna always disobeying orders, so hopefully book 4 she can be obedient & smart with a comeback win. instead of looking and/or being dumb & disobeying orders bc the ending took me out. i’m tired and they need a break (HEA). 😭

Some stuff in here was overdue but some things I disagreed with

Short version: why is it always the MMCs who get to fuck around, but when the finding out starts, the FMC has to weather the slap-back on her own? Feels unfair

May write an in depth review later

September 2025:

Was rereading portions of this and while I still like the plot, I want the next book to bring back insane Cyrus. I like that he loves her and is expressing that in more healthy ways, but I need more passion between those two.

May 1, 2025:

Stuff with Elias was a little slow in the beginning and I was worried the whole book would be about him. I paused the book at 10% to read when I had more time. However, so glad that at about the 30% mark, gears switch. I inhaled this in one sitting.

I think this is my favourite so far from this series. I LOVED IT. All of them are so incredibly readable, but something about this one I don’t think I’ve read a plot quite like this. I don’t need my romance plots to be unique, but this storyline was GREAT.

I love the beast world-building, it is so fascinating. The more that we learn about different beasts, the stuff with Cyrus’ parents is great in this book. Won’t say anything more about it than that. Elias sucks, but I also like the different beast kingdoms, and the slight differences in how they see themselves and humans.

We need to bring back multiple book romance arcs if they are done exactly like this.

And the last title: Dawn of the Queen… this is my jam!! I felt in the previous book the breakdown of communication was so expertly done, with both characters feeling betrayed by the other. In this book, I love that lowkey it’s kinda Anna’s fault. Cyrus grew up and realized he loved her and needed to admit it. I think in the next book we’re going to see Anna make smarter decisions for Cyrus and Ciel and Joan and everyone else.

LETS GOO APRIL 2026!!

Notes: Angst was exquisite, although not a constant. Only one extended explicit scene between Annalise and Cyrus… I’m going to need those numbers to go up, please. The story is good so idc but also please add them in too 🙈🥹

I lost interest in this series as quite frankly I don’t care about Elias. I was hoping he would have gotten killed in the first portion of this book, but I flipped ahead and it seems like Cyrus and him chase each other for more than 40%.

I might come back to this later when book 4 comes out in 2026.

Yani…

This should have ended here...
She built a story in the last book to end it anticlimactic here and get a new villain out of nowhere just for the cliffhanger.
I loved the first two books darkness and non-romantic side. This one kinda felt "oh so now this is romance?" No I don't want romance. This is Stockholm syndrome again, boring. Please give me dark book with gritty image of romance that falls a part. Too many things were not explained properly and now that the story still continues I would need more. The previous books had the excuse of being entertaining so no need for world building (that much) but now the lack is growing more bigger.
I'm not gonna read the next book and just think this as duology.

Didn’t really enjoy this as much as the previous books in the series, despite a lot more happening plot wise. Annalise almost getting her revenge against her abusers but not quite managing it was just plain unsatisfying. If anyone deserves to kill some people, it’s her.

Once again, she’s on the back foot and getting blamed for everything despite the fact that throughout these books all she does is try to exist peacefully and these deranged genocidal maniacs keep getting obsessed with her. It ain’t her fault she’s so perfect.

Also don’t know how Cyrus is somehow in love with her now but feels LESS obsessed with her than in the previous books. Like where did his batshit insane “I can’t be in the same room as you without having a mental breakdown” energy go? He’s making all the right moves romance wise but idk I just don’t feel it like I did previously. Hopefully in the last book he has a return to form.

This is a story that could've been finished in 1-2 books getting dragged out on purpose for no good reason.

See, I get dark romance and the need for suspension of disbelief, for the elastic tolerance of dubious actions, and the firm belief that fiction is not reality. I know most of the time when I pick up a dark romance book, I'm not getting some transformative novel. But I know that the story will at least be entertaining! And entertaining, indeed, were the first two books of the author's The King Series saga despite their obvious pitfalls. But in this third one?......

The vague history of the kingdoms, blurry concept of the beasts and hybrids and the powers they possess, murky details of battle tactics and character motives, convenient plot armor, repetitive themes and dialogue—it is NOT entertaining, it is frustrating.

This is lazy writing where it seems as if the author is content with telling a shallow story centered around a good-sounding, but ultimately nebulous conception of a fantasy world and expecting readers to also be satisfied with that.

This series REALLY should’ve ended with this book. Anna became absolutely insufferable in this one. Like, astoundingly so. I can’t believe she ruined everything with that ridiculous stunt at the end of the book. It was so idiotic it was incomprehensible. A nearly powerless human girl thinking she can take on Elias. And the excessive torture of him? It was so out of character. The rant Cyrus went on at the end about her always being thoughtless and ruining everything for them is so accurate lol. She seriously overestimates her strength and abilities, time and time again.

I will not be reading the last book in this series.

3 STARS

why o why……this was so underwhelming. as someone who rated the first two installments with consecutive 5 stars i am sad to say that i did not get what i expected from this one.

if someone was to ask me a week ago about my go to dark romance book, it would be this one but now……. 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩

𝙎𝙋𝙊𝙄𝙇𝙀𝙍𝙎 𝘼𝙃𝙀𝘼𝘿 (𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙢 𝙙𝙪𝙢𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙣𝙤 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧)

- i find elias pov to be truly unnecessary considering his existence did not really serve to be part of a pivotal twist in the story. might be a personal opinion, IDC about him not when i got more from his perspective rather than cyrus only for him to drop dead so easily at the end. a waste of page if you ask me

- where is the chemistry between my cyrus and anna? where where where? SOMEONE HAND ME ANSWERS. the tension and angst from the first two was palpable! this one did not even touch the surface of what transpired in the last two books. i fear they have lost their spark. where was the explosive confession or the pining from the lost time when anna got kidnapped? i was sooo disappointed. i still remember how they stood there staring at each other like it was a casual monday. your queen got kidnapped and you just got her back and that’s how you react? BOOK 1 CYRUS WOULD HAVE BEEN RAVENOUS.

- the baby was such a plot device. not that i would mind but it was just so glaringly obvious when i got to that chapter. and how did anna move on from that so easily? granted she was in her amnesia era but she got back her memories long after??? s

- too fleshed out and dragging. i do see the vision of the author but it was just poorly executed and a little too late. The King/ WOTK was fast paced, steamy and it had a plot, but it was more character-driven which i have accustomed to like. not that i do not enjoy plot i do but it made the story entirely different and the pent up yearning i had for this book before the release date fizzled out to NOTHING.

- i need more felix and dimitri. can you believe it? past me would not have shown any interest in characters who are not named cyrus and annaliese but here we are. also, protect baby ciel!

- the dark romance aspect was GONE. this could have edged closer to fantasy considering the amount of focus it has shown in the world building aspect and complexities towards beasts and kingdoms. though i doubt it would be successful in slightly thrusting towards that genre when the market for this book expected romance. fantasy is my main genre but that might be a dealbreaker for my opposites.

- if there are any chances annaliese might get stockholm syndromed now might be the best chance to start showing signals towards that ending. the constant push and pull makes me want to pull my hair instead. and whether this is a slow burn or not it feels more like a slow death

YES I WILL STILL READ BOOK 4

Heehee so i decided to read the authors unofficial unpublished version on Patreon bc I simply have no patience. And boy was it good!! I think the characters are FINALLY FINALLY starting to evolve in the directions I’ve wanted them too. Anna is definitely moving more in the direction I was hoping getting stronger and braver - I think the time she spends with Elias is unfortunate and I wish she could have done more to fight him but I also get that her memories were gone. It killed me to see her not remember Ciel . As for Cyrus I think I was a little confused initially by his demeanor in the book cause he pretty quickly decides that he loves Anna and can’t kill her or harm her and wants to have her in his life no matter what which I guess we all knew to be true or at least we were working towards it but now that he’s gotten over his hurdles of her race it’s just kinda weird seeing him so thoughtful and sweet - now I’m NOT complaining, for the love of god please don’t go back Cyrus but I think just like Anna I’m distrustful which is a testimony to the author that I feel exactly like Anna’s does about his new behavior. I think the emergence of the new obstacle at the end is interesting and I’m excited to see where it goes. I love that the author mentioned that the fourth book will focus more on their relationship and romance and their goal again a common enemy- really so exciting to see this characters grow from the first book to where they are now.

2.5 ⭐️ I am so disappointed, I’m not sure I’ll continue the series. The writing got to be so repetitive, several times we had the same statement on the same page - and twice we had the same statement in the same paragraph. This book was just 275 pages of the same inner monologue, over and over and over. The story only moves in the last 15 pages. And where it’s going? 🙄 I’m not interested at all. I think I’m done with this series now, and I’m going to think of it as a duology with no HEA.

I went into this thinking it was the final book so you can only imagine my surprise and delight when I realized I was wrong.
I truly love dark romance, dark romantasy, etc. but these books are classified as horror romance (I think)? Regardless, there’s some MAJOR dark stuff and I wouldn’t recommended this to people who would need TWs. If you don’t though, and enjoy some DARK romantacy, I can’t recommended this book enough.
Already patiently (&respectfully) waiting for the final book (:
