"Gold refined by God’s fire. Faith refined by trials. For years, I had blindly chased money, women, and power. Now I saw that none of that had any worth. Layne’s faith was the real gold."

This story was really powerful. It’s definitely a romance, but it’s also a strong story of redemption. Life has knocked Keaton down, and he’s fallen into a lifestyle far from God. But when Layne becomes his wife, everything begins to change...more than he ever expected.

Keaton has made serious mistakes that put his family's company at risk. To prove he can change, he agrees to an arranged marriage with Layne, a woman battling chronic illness and holding tightly to her faith. While Layne sees their marriage as God's plan, Keaton is far from living a godly life. As they face trials, danger, and temptation, both must learn to trust each other and grow. Faith is gently woven into the story as Keaton begins to change in unexpected ways!

This story was so sweet. It was hard seeing Layne struggle with her illness, but it was also eye-opening and honest. I appreciated how her day-to-day challenges and strong faith were shown. Watching Keaton grow and let go of his past to become a better man for Layne was amazing. The way faith was woven throughout the book made it feel even deeper and more meaningful.

With some suspense and mystery added in, it really kept me turning the pages.

I give this book 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this review reflects my honest opinion.

“That’s what I kept seeing in Layne—gold refined by God’s fire. Faith refined by trials. For years, I had blindly chased money, women, and power. Now I saw that none of that had any worth. Layne’s faith was the real gold.”

I love grabbing my favorite quote from a book I’m reading and this one has amazing choices. Layne and Keaton’s story isn’t this fluffy, page filler Christian book. The characters are real, the pain she feels is palpable, and the condemnation that keeps Keaton from wanting a real marriage at the beginning is deep. This is a story you will want to read again because…
This gold digger has a heart of gold.

God bless the author for her story, and I’m praying for her and those who struggle with their health. GET THIS BOOK.

After walking through some really hard places in life, gritty but clean fiction has etched itself in my heart. My problem is that it’s often hard to find gritty fiction that’s also clean—and even harder to find gritty fiction that’s also Christian. When I happened across this book on a FB group, it immediately piqued my interest. I found it on KU that same day and read it in ONE DAY. Yes. ONE DAY. I rarely do that- maybe once or twice a year, so it’s a true testament to how into the story I was drawn.

Layne Rhyner needs a husband. Well, REALLY, she needs healing from her debilitating chronic illness—but since God doesn’t seem to be on the same page—she wonders if the next best solution is entering a marriage of convenience to help provide for herself.

Keaton Grady is rolling in money. He’s also a playboy. Not exactly husband material.
Except for one thing. He wants to take over his family whiskey business. And to do that he needs to bolster his image. Maybe marriage is just the thing.

Neither of them expect this marriage to produce something even greater—souls coming out of the fire as pure gold.

Things I loved about this

💛Chronic Illness Representation
💛Marriage of Convenience
💛Solid Faith Elements
💛Bad-Boy finds Jesus
💛Gritty, deeper topics
💛 Author’s writing style

This may not be a book for everyone—but if your love stories with slightly darker and gritty themes, solid redemption and salvation elements, and sizzling but clean romance—this is fantastic!

I am SO looking forward to reading more by this author and particularly the next books in this series!

GENRE
-Christian contemporary romance with some suspense

CONTENT
-🤬: none
-❤️: kisses, very mild fade-to-black scene between married couple
-⚠️: mentions of drug/alcohol abuse, neglectful parent, some perilous situations

I liked this.

Layne has an invisible chronic illness and is struggling. Keaton needs a wife to be able to take over his parents' company, but he doesn't want to be attached to anyone, so he and Layne strike up a deal. Layne only agrees because she feels like this is what God wants her to do.

It was eye-opening to read a story about someone with myalgic encephalomyelitis. I'd never heard of this illness prior to reading this book, but it heightened my empathy and made me feel grateful for the days that I wake up feeling healthy (which is most...but I happen to have a cold right now). The story also emphasized the beautiful reminder that Jesus carries us through the highs and the lows, and He's there no matter what.

Keaton's family is very interesting. His parents were so cold. It's interesting to me that the brothers seem to be pretty close, though. I'm interested in each of their stories.

Favorite Quotes:

-"Satan can take anything from me, but not my faith and dark sense of humor."

-God Almighty wasn't a feeling or the absence of pain; His presence and goodness were an irrefutable fact.

-That's what hardship did. It brought a relationship to a level beautiful moments never could.

-I was my Heavenly Father's priority. Some people might argue that wasn't possible, but just as God was omnipresent in time and space, He could also have more than one priority. What an incredible thought.

3.75/5 rounded up:)

I went into this semi-blind, only knowing it was a marriage of convenience and that the FMC had a chronic illness. What I got was a story with struggles, faith, trials, healing, and truly beautiful moments. We're introduced to Keaton, a man living in his own ways and in need of the Lord. Then there's Layne, a woman struggling with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) who clings to the Lord despite her challenges. Enter the marriage of convenience, and we're on a roll! This wasn't a walk in the park – it was raw, real, and achingly beautiful. I hurt for Layne because I couldn't fathom going through something like what she has. I loved watching Keaton's journey from start to finish; it was a beautiful transformation. I also enjoyed the suspense, which kept me guessing until the end.

Content notes: I don’t have a list this time. But just know that there was a discussions of s*x as a term in the MOC. Thoughts of lust. A scene that almost led to s*x between the MCs but Keaton stopped it. FTB between married couple. That’s about what I remember:)

I absolutely loved Gold Digger by Skylar J. Kent. This story sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the last word. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about Layne and Keaton and their story. Days later, I’m still thinking about this incredible book.

I don’t even know where to begin with this review, so let’s start with Layne. What a beautiful character! I absolutely adore her. She has a painful chronic illness that made me hurt for her, but she fights through it with strength, a sense of humor, and an unshakable faith in God. The faith thread in this story is beautiful! Next, Keaton, oh Keaton, I think he’s one of my all time favorite male characters. There was just something about him that drew me to him. His story is one of pain too, but emotional pain, not physical pain. I hurt for him in a totally different way. He also persevered through his trauma, but not in a good way. I loved his redemption! I loved him. Put these two together and you have magic. There’s also a great mystery thread in this story. I was completely shocked at its outcome.

This story ran me through the gamut of emotions. I loved every second of it. This was one story I was sad to see end. I could’ve kept reading about these characters and their lives. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! I am so intrigued already plus, I want to catch up with Layne and Keaton. Gold Digger has jumped to one of my all time favorite reads! Skylar J. Kent is an author not to be missed!

What can I even say that truly captures how I feel about Skylar J. Kent’s Gold Digger? First words that come to mind: WOW. AMAZING. I had the special opportunity to read this one early, and I’m so glad I did!

Layne is living with a chronic illness that no one can explain or understand. When her disability claim is denied, she’s left with a difficult choice—and ends up in a marriage of convenience to billionaire bad boy Keaton Grady. Keaton, a known womanizer, is faced with his own ultimatum: marry or lose his chance to take over his family’s whiskey empire, Lincoln Grady Distillery.

But when Layne enters his life, everything begins to shift. She challenges him to put his faith into action and become the man he’s meant to be. I absolutely loved the dynamic between these two—Layne is strong, no-nonsense, and refuses to back down, even when Keaton tries to push her away.

And my favorite trope: He takes care of her. As someone in the disabled community, I’m incredibly thankful Skylar didn’t shy away from the hard truths. The faith elements woven throughout the story made it even more meaningful.

This one hit all the right notes—romance, redemption, and raw honesty. Highly recommend!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Wow! What can I even say to describe how amazing this book is? I had the blessing of reading this book early, and I’m SO thankful for the opportunity! This book is truly something special and has officially taken center stage in my top favorites of all time. I was immediately drawn in to this story, connecting in the most beautiful ways with the FMC. Through tears I felt everything she grappled with as she struggled with her chronic illness. It was written with so much hard truth that I am so thankful the author didn’t shy away from. Every time, I wept, because I’ve been there myself. This book made me feel validated and seen in a way I’ve never felt before, and I clutched to that with everything in me as I turned each page in this book, searching for hope, for answers. And my goodness, did this book deliver in every way imaginable! Watching Layne’s faith through the turbulence of life was so inspiring. She is just the most beautiful character with a heart of gold. Keaton took time to warm up to, but once his heart opened to Layne and what she had to offer, watching their connection unfold was an absolute gift. So so beautiful. The dynamic between these two really warmed my heart. Watching Keaton slowly open himself to Layne and learn how to take care of her was everything! 🥹❤️ I LOVE that trope and this beautiful book absolutely delivered. The elements of faith throughout this book made it that much more meaningful and added so much beauty and depth. With a dash of suspense perfectly woven in, you just can’t ask for a more perfect read. Everything about this book was a healing balm to my soul. It stretched my faith, gave so much clarity and validation to life with chronic illness, and left me with all the warm fuzzy feelings that I love in a good romance read. I couldn’t get enough of this book and was honestly so sad when it ended! I could read about Layne and Keaton forever! 🫶 I will definitely be passing this book along to everyone in my life when it releases on April 22, first of all because it’s just such a beautiful book, and secondly because it perfectly describes the complexities of life and relationships with chronic illness. I believe the clarity this will give to those I love who do their best to support me and love me through the hard will be a gift for us all. Thank you to Skylar J. Kent for writing this incredible book that has found its way into my heart forever. 🥹❤️

# 51 Married Couple

Book: Gold Digger
Author: Skyler J. Kent

Five stars for this new book by an Indie author I saw advertised in the Avids page and decided to give it a try. What drew me to the book was that one of the main characters experienced chronic unexplained pain and I have been dealing with that with my 17-year-old daughter, the other thing that drew me in was a modern marriage of convenience story. I'm not a marriage of convenience fan, but I have never seen it done from a modern aspect and wanted to see what that looked like.

I am beyond glad that I decided to give this book a try because I absolutely loved it, and read it in two days. The book is told from first person point of view, you get Layne, the chronic pain warrior's POV, and Keaton, the douchey playboy who needs a wife POV.

What I loved most about the story was how relatable the characters were. It really was a modern and fresh take on Christianity today. The Christians in this book remind me of my friends. It wasn’t overly righteous or preachy. It really showed how everyday Christians are, how we think about each other how we think about ourselves I just thought Layne and Keaton were both really real characters. I like how God used Layne in such a realistic way to reach into Keaton’s life.

Honestly, reading about some of Layne‘s chronic pain upset me. It struck a personal note and it was a reminder how fiction can be used to heal us. Layne saw her pain as a way for God to use her and make her stronger, as someone who does not suffer from chronic pain at times, I got annoyed with how often Layne was sick, but then I thought about how I am unable to help my daughter through her pain and the fact that we cannot find out what is going on , and it really hit me hard, looking at pain through the eyes of the sufferer.

I honestly love the book and even though it is billed as a chronic pain warrior book, I felt like it was so much more. I enjoyed meeting the fabulous cast of characters and I would like to read their books. I assume they are going to get books, because they are just too good not to get their own books.

I highly recommend this book and I’ll be keeping my eye on this author.

Keaton + Layne

This was a MOC to a rich womanizer.
Layne has a chronic illness & Keaton needs a wife to secure the position of CEO that he’s always dreamed of. This was a really awesome story - getting to watch Keaton transform before your eyes. He is a very broken man due to childhood issues & being lost. Layne is not well and has debilitating symptoms. Keaton’s heart surprised me - underneath it all he does have a heart of gold. I loved how it said in the book that no one is too far gone. Keaton never thought he could be redeemed by God. Layne was a walking testimony and Keaton was completely inspired by her faith. The romance was very sweet. There is a bit of a mystery included as well. I appreciated this closed door romance that talked very much about how God can restore and make your life new.

Quotes -
God Almighty wasn’t a feeling or the absence of pain; His presence and goodness were an irrefutable fact. I was never alone.

“You’re not a burden, Layne, you’re a blessing,” Keaton said quietly.

That’s what I kept seeing in Layne—gold refined by God’s fire. Faith refined by trials. For years, I had blindly chased money, women, and power. Now I saw that none of that had any worth. Layne’s faith was the real gold.

Content -
Chronic illness (myalgic encephalomyelitis)
Catholic themes
Talks of MMC’s past with women
Alcohol/ drug mentions
Self destructive lifestyle
Death of family members (off page)
Toxic relationship with parents
Fighting (on page)

Re-read. I needed a comfort read over the last few days when I was feeling discouraged. It's almost a year since my ARC review, and I still love the encouraging messages of this book just as much as the first time I read it.

April 22, 2025

I was sent an ARC of Gold Digger by the author, Skylar J. Kent. I'm honoured to be on her review team because this is a special story that has become one of my favourites. It was entertaining and also encouraging for my Christian faith. This book is for anyone who has had their life turned upside down and inside out by illness. This is also for anyone who feels like there is no saving grace for them because of what they've done or experienced.

I've not read anything this realistic in the portrayal of someone with a crippling chronic condition. I understood Layne since I've lived through some of her experiences and related to her fears. I appreciate that the author wrote from her personal experience and chose to honestly show the harsh reality of chronic illnesses - the symptoms, emotional stress, loneliness and fears.

Then there's the slow burn romance, a bit of suspense and very serious discussions about life's struggles, faith and redemption. Keaton and Layne being together doesn't make sense, especially considering their first impressions of each other. Yet, they come to an equally beneficial arrangement, a marriage of convenience. Slowly, they find a rhythm and connect on a deeper level. The way Keaton cares for and protects Layne is sweet. Layne's faith is a guiding light. Keaton's life spirals, and he must face his inner turmoil and a few surprises. The slowly unwinding mystery of the threats to Keaton was intriguing. While I had my suspicions, I didn't expect the revelations.

Gold Digger exceeded my expectations. I appreciate the message that everyone can find hope, redemption, peace, strength and joy in God because he can handle all difficulties in life, and he will be present with us on a personal level. My soul was encouraged by the scripture verses. I laughed, smiled and cried for the characters and those they represent. I was reminded to keep praying for myself and people like Layne and Keaton. I was inspired to dig deeper in my faith and anchor my trust fully in God despite my circumstances.

I absolutely loved this book and recommend it to everyone.

This has to be one of the most unique and original stories I’ve ever read. It’s my favorite trope… Marriage of convenience. And it is so well done.

I think it would be easy to look at the title and cover of this book and make assumptions that don’t actually apply. This is not a typical romance at all. It’s gritty and real.

It’s important to note that the MMC is not a believer. Because of that, his behavior in the book does not line up with Biblical values. He’s a partier and a womanizer and he makes no qualms about it. He knows who he is. And he’s fine with that. He has no use for God. Let me add that even though his behavior is inappropriate it is not portrayed graphically in the book. The author handles it well. You have no doubt of what he does or has done, but it’s not in your face.

I’m gonna be honest, I struggled a bit with the fact that Layne went ahead and married him, knowing he was not a believer. But again, the author handled this well in my opinion. We get to see Layne wrestle, and reason and pray as she works out this decision. And what ultimately causes her to say yes is plausible.

The faith element in the story is strong. In fact, it’s one of the things I love the most. But it’s also done in such a way that, at least for me, is very realistic. It’s not contrived or forced.

The element of suspense is also well done. I will say that I figured out who was behind it all, but not until very close to the end of the book.

Keaton is part of a sibling group and this is book one in a series. So I’m guessing that future books will focus on other siblings in this group. After one I’m looking forward to them and trying to be patient as I wait for the next installment.

“Gold is refined by fire, our faith by trials”

After seeing a post of this book, I was drawn to read it and I was hooked since the first chapter. It’s a lovely story of redemption, grow, faith, hope and some mystery.

Layne’s character was truly inspiring. Keeping her faith throughout every struggle, always leaning on God and praying every moment. I enjoyed her dynamic with Keaton. How she challenges him on his faith, creating a lovely arc of redemption and finding God.

This is definitely not the same old Christian read but it is definitely a great Christian read. It is one of the best books I have ever read. You will look at chronic illness in a different light. This book will stay with me for a long time. Gold Digger is edgier than most Christian books, but if you hang in you will be glad you did.

This book was an interesting one! I knew starting out, that from the content and blurb that this would be one of those that I'd either really enjoy...or hate. There wasn't really much middle ground, so I was both excited to read it, and a bit hesitant, in equal measure. Haha.

I love Kent's writing style, and these characters quickly grew on me! I was surprised by how quickly this story grabbed my attention, and so many of the themes were beautifully portrayed. Many of the tropes I love were represented, and with a unique twist that I adored!

This one also contained a measure of suspense, even though it's more of a Contemporary Romance, I definitely see it has potential as a Romantic Suspense, just without the police/military type presence. (Well...that's not entirely true, it's there, they're just not the main characters in this one.) That's another aspect I loved! Seeing the different relationships and dynamics at play throughout the story. This cast is so varied and I loved the nice mix of personalities and traits that were done in a way that seemed believable, if slightly unlikely at times. There were a few that were so far removed from the others that it's clear they were that way for a reason.

(One such example is Kingsley and his choice to become a monk. It serves a purpose beyond being just another unique character among many, but it's also clear that it wasn't as smooth of a transition. As readers, we don't see the build-up, the time it took him to wrestle with the decision and how he changed over that time, leading him to finally commit to this life-changing commitment. From an out-side perspective, it seems fairly sudden and I think that's a large part of the reason his differences and choice stand out so much in Keaton's story.

As a result, it takes a little convincing, but soon becomes clear why he'd make this choice, and it serves the intended as it works to fill a role. I ended up loving him and loved seeing how his role and life as a monk has affected his perspective and offered him a deeper wisdom and helpful insight that he likely wouldn't have had in other circumstances. I enjoyed seeing him with his brothers, but what I loved most was the quiet acceptance and the welcoming friendship he offers Layne.

Honestly, of them all, Kingsley is a wonderful choice for the role, even though this distinction really makes his presence really stand out in a clear and intentionally contrasting way against the backdrop of the rest of the characters' lives and their chosen lifestyles. While most of them are more or less living an expected life, his is different and it's not just a matter of being stuck in a tough situation like Layne is during the first part of the story. No, his is much more intentional and it shows a strength and courage that many of the others seem to lack, or disregard, preferring their lavish parties and being surrounded by a crowd.)

These contrasting personalities really ended up working together surprisingly well though, and the few 'outliers' gave the overall story as added depth and a touch of wisdom that really makes the story shine. I loved getting to know the characters, and look forward to reading more of their stories.

*I received an eARC from the author. This does not affect my review and these thoughts are my own. This review is voluntary.*

Words fail me to describe this book. This is emotionally laden and filled with hope in the midst of pain. Meet Layne,a vibrant young woman who had everything going for her before she fell ill to a chronic illness. Doctors can't truly diagnosis and many feel she's faking it. To be able to survive in America and get the desired help she needs, she is left with no choice but to marry Keaton Grady, the playboy of the Grady empire. But Grady's outlook is just a facade to hide the pain within. The author brings two people suffering from different versions of pain together to create a new life as one.
Skylar Kent writes a heartfelt, emotion-laden book! You feel the pain, the inner torture, and struggles - to brave through the physical pain, fight through the demons of the past, and hope for a bright future. Keaton and Layne are two beautiful souls who find love and a new beginning as they open themselves up to each other, Keaton accepting God's love and Layne growing in God's love and strength.
I was continuously amazed and wowed as I read Gold Digger. I knew it was going to be good, but it sure beat my imagination. I loved the raw emotions, the pain, and the hope that shone through the haze. Chronic illness can dim one's outlook to life and create a depressing day to day existence, and it's worse when it can't be truly explained. The author writes a beautiful story of light in the darkness, divine strength, and grace from God to go on. It is indeed possible to find beauty and rise from the ashes of sickness and despair.
The support of Layne's family and friends; Keaton's brothers ,and friends is awesome and heartwarming even when danger lurked. The tensed moments and danger added a whole new dimension and suspense to this story to the very end. A spell binding book that encourages and uplifts. One worth reading over and over again.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ever since I saw a post about this novel, I wanted to read it. This book did not disappoint—it had me from the first chapter. Gold Digger is one-hundred percent a just-one-more-chapter kind of story! Make sure you have tissues nearby.

This book is clean, but keep in mind that this marriage of convenience does not take place between two Christians. Both have a past, but it’s still firmly a part of Keaton’s present at the start and his character has a redemption arc. On that note, I like how he enters the story. Everything feels real. The moment is not a perfect meet cute.

Layne is a wonderful character. Her quiet strength, dignity, and beliefs shine in this novel. I love that prayer is a part of her life. Circumstances may feel overwhelming, but prayer from the heart flows easier than picking up a phone to text.

I loved this incredible story! It’s not a light read. It’s a thoughtful novel about continuing to follow the Lord even when the answer is not what we want it to be. This story is heartbreaking, relatable, and beautiful. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read this book, and I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future!

This is my first book of Skylar's, and I can say with certainty it will not be my last. I am blown away by the writing, the characters, and how realistically their struggles are portrayed. I love how faith was woven into the FMC's life.

Layne has been struggling with a chronic illness for years. Lately, it has overtaken her life, leaving her penniless and jobless. A chance for a marriage of convenience comes along with a billionaire, Keaton.

I admired Layne's strength despite her struggles and the way she relies on God. I really loved how realistic and relatable it all was. Seeing Layne's unwavering faith was an inspiration for my own life, how she radiated such joy, love, and forgiveness despite the pain. This book definitely opened my eyes to the struggles so many face while living with a chronic illness

Keaton was a total playboy. Honestly, it was hard to like him at first with his selfish nature. However, his growth arc and redemption story through the grace and mercy of God were so inspiring and tugged on my heartstrings. Keaton's struggle with his shame and guilt was real and deep. But him slowly realizing he is forgiven by Jesus and beginning to accept it made me cry.

This was such a heartfelt story, I laughed, rejoiced, and cried with these characters. Their struggles were raw and relatable. But Skylar woven the Gospel so beautifully into Layne's and Keaton's story.

I highly recommend this book! It tugged at my heart and left me with so much hope. This is one of the books that will stay with me for a long time.

“Mental health services aren’t listed in the contract.”

I chuckled. “Listening is part of the wife’s job.”

“In that case, I got more stories. You married a man with a rotten soul.”

“Good thing I’m the daughter of a God Who restores souls like that.”

Keaton gave me a sad smile. “I’m too far gone, Layne.”

“Nobody’s too far gone. Not for Him.”

While most of my books are “bookstagram made me do it”, this one I actually found scrolling the Avid Readers of Christian Fiction group on FB. The cover immediately caught my eye, but it was the review and blurb that made me want to pick it up. I love the real, raw, roller coaster reads. Especially when they are grounded in biblical truths and have a strong faith thread. Then add in the chronic illness representation I knew it was for me. While I don’t suffer from the same disease as Layne, I do have several autoimmunes that leave me completely exhausted most days and I can relate to her struggles.

This is a MoC between a playboy (think Oliver Queen before Lian Yu) and a woman who is in need of monetary assistance when her disability claims are continually denied. She is unable to work and provide for herself. And he needs a wife to secure his inheritance of the family business. Now I must warn you Keaton is a man of the world, entrenched in a life that glorifies and caters to the flesh. Layne, on the other hand, relies on Jesus everyday just to survive.

This is a clean, suspenseful romance. But there are instances where alcohol, past casual relationships, and other worldly living experiences are talked about. There are lots of scripture and references to God, Jesus, repentance, and redemption.

I very much enjoyed this book and am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Keaton comes from a large family and Layne has a brother with lots of friends I’d love to see stories for.

I give this 4 1/2 Stars!

I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a Christian romance book. The main characters are Keaton and Layne. Keaton needs to restore his reputation or walk away. Layne can’t get on disability for her chronic illness so what will she do? To help each other out they enter a marriage of convenience. Layne sees this as a God thing but Keaton is living far from God. I loved watching their love grow. I loved seeing Keaton come to God. Seeing them overcome the trials they went through. They both had struggles in life but everyone has struggles in life. God didn’t promise life would be easy but that He will always be there for us. This book proves just that. I loved how Keaton learned how to take care of Layne when she needed it. How they were able to rely on each other and God. This was my first book where someone in it lived with a chronic illness and it was eye opening. I know I have had miscarriages in the past and have struggled with my Faith during those times and to see how Layne was able to keep her Faith was truly inspiring to me. This is also one of those books that will have you crying. This book was full of Faith, hope, struggles, redemption, and so much more. If those things interest you then this may be the book for you. I can’t wait to see what this author writes next.

After former professional rock climber Layne begins to lose everything to a chronic illness, a friend of her brother's Keaton, a wealthy distillery executive who wants to run the family business but needs to be married in order to do so, proposes a marriage of convenience.

Keaton isn't a Christian. In fact with his reputation as a womanizer and a bad boy makes him an unlikely match for the Christ-following, adventurous Layne, yet somehow they they click.

Skylar J Kent absolutely nails the emotions of life with a chronic illness in Gold Digger. Between the moments of life, faith, romance, and family, Gold Digger weaves a beautiful story of redemption and hope. This quote from Layne says it all: "I tried not to be bitter about it because I knew it was God’s plan, and it ultimately brought me closer to Him. But some days were just brutal. And today was one of those days."

If you enjoy tear inducing, gritty Christian romance, or books by Nicole Deese, T. Bell and Catherine Brusk, then I'm sure you'll enjoy or cry through Gold Digger.

I really enjoyed really Layne and Keaton's story and would highly recommend it, I can't wait to read what is coming next.

I received an ARC from the author, but this does not impact my thoughts or opinions and this review.

How do you write a review for a book that tore your heart apart, but also glued it together at the same time?

I absolutely loved the depth, beauty, and healing present in this story. My heart ached for Layne and everything that she went through, but also for Keaton and the trauma from his past and the unfulfilling way that he dealt with it.

Layne’s faith was so well developed, and you could tell by her actions and how she spoke that her faith was real and the only thing sustaining her through her trials. And the fact that she lived it so well that it impacted Keaton was amazing. I especially loved the moments where they forgave and grew together.

The mystery element was so well done! I was trying to figure out who was behind all the threats, but I was quite surprised!

Skylar, you have written a beautiful and amazing book that points only toward Christ! I’m so glad that God put this story on your heart, and I can’t wait to see how many people come to know Him better because of it!

I wanted to stop reading multiple times, but I needed to see how the author redeemed Keaton.

This story has a good premise, but I struggled with it.
There were so many times people were mentioned that came out of nowhere. (Alfie and Monroe) Situations were mentioned that the readers was never in on. (Little brother’s bedroom). It was all over the place. Too many characters that weren’t properly introduced and infused into the story.

Also loved the whole chronic illness rep, BUT I have to add, as someone who struggles with chronic pain too — I found it hard to relate to Layne. It felt like she had all the faith necessary for God to save someone like Keaton, but not for Him to ease her pain.? To break her free from it.?
It didn’t make sense. Felt like she gave up on life, and was only clinging to God the entire way through the story. But not the His Promises and His Healing.

In my mind she grows with Keaton, and both of them find more healing.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 rounded to 5

Skylar does a great job shedding light on Layne’s chronic illness and what it can be like to suffer without bitterness by finding joy in christ. She gives Layne a head-held-high attitude and fun banter.
Keaton is trying to do whatever it takes to take over the family business. Everyone says the only thing Keaton cares about is his image, but his actions say otherwise.

Quotes: “Got a little jealous there for a second, didn’t you?” I smiled at my husband.
“No man but me touches my wife or hits on her or gives her a pet name.” The intensity in his eyes made it clear he meant every single word.

Spice: Kisses only 🫑🫑

Half a star off because I felt Laine knowingly went against her conscience to get married in the first place (knowing Kent was an unbeliever and rationalizing it), but once they were married the rest of the story flowed beautifully and Laine was fully committed, which I loved.

I was given a copy of this book for an ARC review, but all opinions are my own.

This book is a contemporary Christian romance that explores the concept of "gold diggers" with a Christian twist. It centers around a Christian girl who endures chronic illness and daily pain, yet she maintains her faith in God despite her struggles.

The story also features a billionaire striving to become a CEO, a goal that is just at his fingertips for him. As you read, you'll witness the characters facing various challenges, experiencing redemption, and unraveling mysteries, all while finding solace and guidance through the Lord's grace, despite their imperfections.

I highly recommend this book; it is truly touching, and there’s a good chance it will move you to tears, just as it did for me. Skylar J. Kent does an amazing job of portraying the challenges some people face in life.

Started May with a bang!! I just finished Gold Digger and WOW—what a story. This book had me hooked from the very beginning. It’s a bold and deeply meaningful Christian romance that doesn’t shy away from real-life struggles.

If you’re a fan of bad boy redemption stories, this one delivers in the best way. Add in a marriage of convenience, a heroine with a chronic illness, and a hero who genuinely takes care of her—and you’ve got a story that tugs at your heart while keeping you turning the pages.

The writing was excellent and emotionally grounded, with themes of grace, healing, and second chances. And just when you think you’ve got it figured out, there’s a subtle thread of mystery and suspense woven through that keeps you guessing.

I can’t wait to read more from this author

An unexpectedly beautiful redemption romance

When I read the synopsis of this book I wasn’t sure what to expect. And I am so glad because with every turn of the page I kept being pleasantly surprised.
The author does such a good job giving insight into the struggles of a chronically ill person through Layne’s character. It truly is inspirational how through her experience she showcases how God’s love is unwavering. It made it completely believable that her marriage of convenience husband, Keaton, would become curious about God through Layne’s faith.
I love how fast paced the action is, no unnecessary sub-plots or characters. This is the first book I’m finishing in less than five days in a very long time! I’m looking forward to reading Kingsley’s story in the next book as well.
My rating:
Faith content - ✝️✝️✝️ (out of 3)
Romance elements - ❤️❤️ (out of 3)
Overall - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (out of 5)

Priceless!

This book far exceeded my expectations. I absolutely could not put it down. Truly a must read! It is fast paced, full of humor and angst, family drama, and the ups and downs of a romance. One of the best marriage of convenience stories ever written!

Kent has woven a spectacular story of faith through hardship. The accurate description of a truly debilitating desease process flowed from her words, educating those who scoff and the nay-sayers about some of the realities of rare neurological illnesses and their symptoms. There are many twists and turns, curves, and unexpected revelations along the way as the characters learn to "walk by faith, and not by sight."
