Margaret Tanner is an award winning, best selling author.
As well as writing historical novels set in frontier Australia she has discovered a love for writing Western Romance. Her novella, Edwina of Connecticut is one of the 50 novels in the American Mail Order Bride series. Christmas Cowboy is in the Western Christmas Anthology, Silver Belles And Stetsons.
. She has had numerous short stories published over the years, but writing Historical romance novels is her passion.
Her favourite historical period is the 1st World War. Not only has she painstakingly researched this era, but was fortunate enough to make a poignant pilgrimage to the battlefields of Gallipoli (in Turkey), France and Belgium.
She is married with three grown up sons, and two gorgeous grand-daughters. Margaret lives in Australia. She has recently retired from work, and hopes to concentrate on her writing.
The story is a clean, historical western where life and death change the future. The story begins in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with newly widowed Rita Swanson. She will get the shock of her life when another woman, Louisa, shows up at the wake and announces that she is the legal wife of the late Benedict Swanson. The house will be cleared of guests, except for the two women and the pastor. While he can vouch that he personally married Rita and Ben two years ago, Louisa has pictures of the family, along with a will leaving everything to her and their children. Louisa will give Rita a week to vacate the home and allow her to take a few items, like an old wagon and a couple of horses. It doesn’t matter that Rita is heavy with child, she must leave, not only her home, but the town that now considers her a fallen woman.
The only thing Rita knows to do is to head to Pine Gap, Colorado, near Denver, to where her last family member, Michael, lives. Her two brothers served in the war, Alex was killed, and died in Michael’s arms—leaving him a broken man. It wasn’t long before both their parents went to an early grave.
Kyle Bolton and Mick Dalrymple were friends, even rode together as bounty hunters, and had obtained land grants from the government next to each other. But Mick will be shot in the back and die, and the bank took the land back. Now, Kyle is dealing with rustlers—stealing the horses he had captured and trained for the Army. He will be out watching for them when a wagon with a woman shows up, inquiring about Michael. Maybe he didn’t handle the situation well, causing her to faint and hit her head. Kyle had been a doctor during the war and even had an influential practice in San Francisco, but now even that is gone.
The story will bring Kyle and Rita together, and the stress and trauma will have Rita going into labor—there isn’t enough time to get her to town, and this isn’t something he wants to be doing, but fate deems it is to happen. While Rita only wanted to find her brother, she finds his friend, and he helps her and the baby. As she recovers, they get to know each other and discover that maybe being together is healing for them both.
While the story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people, it is also a story of healing and moving forward in life. Both Rita and Kyle have faced unfair circumstances, but they are stronger because of them. Yes, we do get the coveted happily ever after ending.
Rita and Kyle are both deceived by unscrupulous, vile people who used them for their own gains, leaving them victims. Kyle has let the anger and bitterness rule his life, he owns a ranch, but it is run down and almost as broken as he feels. For Rita the betrayal is fresh and she has had to run with almost nothing to her name, she is destitute and desperate by the time she reaches Kyle's ranch. I love that Kyle and Rita are able to share their tragic stories and find anger on their behalf, but also acceptance of their innocence and the unjust nature of people's judgement. Seeing their hearts heal and hope grow is beautiful, the love that follows is obvious to see, but so very heartwarming. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Rita endured a horrible situation that made itself known after the death of her husband. Who had another wife and children… A very pregnant Rita fled the city with the intent of finding her brother’s house.
Kyle was a surgeon in a swanky part of San Francisco, and was in love with a beautiful woman. But she turned out to be a terrible person. Due to circumstances beyond his control, he lost his medical license and became a hermit out in the middle of nowhere. He avoided people as much as possible until a very pregnant and distraught woman showed up.
A sad but interesting story. Imagine you having your husbands dinner after his funeral and a woman walks in and says he is her husband and has proof to show that she is telling the truth. You have to leave town because your “friends “ turn against you and so they threaten you with tar and feathers if you don’t leave town. The story begins here . Enjoy ❤️
Rebuffed Rita is a sad story to read. When people shun her in town, she must leave quickly. She is alone, a widow and pregnant. Rita has no where to go, but to find her brother for help. The journey is hard, but she must do this for her baby. She doesn’t find her brother, but his friend and neighbor, Kyle. Kyle has his own haunting issues. Can they both find peace and love?
A story of two different men, one who was selfish and thought of only his lusts. And Kyle, a Doctor who lost his license because of lies. And Rita a woman that married a man that was already married and she was shunned even though she did nothing wrong. I really liked this story.
Rita is a strong woman who leaves town heavily pregnant sets out to find her brothers ranch. Kyle is a bitter man who takes Rita in. This is a story about two people who have been decieved by other and how they find happiness together. A story that will make you feel good. Margaret Tanner always delivers a great story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book filled with two hurting people both betrayed in the past. Rita and Kyle were two people I enjoyed getting to read about and happy when they both realize they found what they were both looking for. Recommend. JudyE
