Mackenzie…

With each dawn rose a new day, but nothing changed. Not really. My life was the same revolving circle. We barely lived. We moved. We barely got by in a new place. Until we moved again.
New school. New trailer park. Different day.
The first day of my senior year in high school, I was ready to give up. Ready to run far, far away and hope I would never be found. But I’m a smart girl. I knew it would never work. I had a plan. One I was so close to fulfilling. I could start over. Be a new person.
Live without the “poor girl” and “trailer trash” labels attached to my back.
I became guarded, living by my own rules.
Rule number one: don’t worry about learning their names, I wouldn’t be around long enough for them to learn mine.
But then, I met him. I tried to resist, tried to push away, make myself seem uninterested, but Hayes wouldn’t let me. He saw something in me and chased me until I finally gave in. We became friends — best friends. And then, we became more. My guard fell and I opened my heart, only for him to crush it in his bare hands.

Hayes…

Sex. Booze. Football. In that order.
I’d never been the kind of guy who “did” relationships. They seemed pointless. Girls threw themselves at me, practically purred for me to seduce them.
Why would I give that up?
Why would I want more?
But there was something about Mackenzie. Something different from all those other girls. She was someone I was willing to risk everything for. I didn’t care where she came from, or about her past. It didn’t matter that she lived on “the wrong side of town” and I was the rich kid “sitting on a gold mine”.
Even more, those other girls didn’t matter anymore. Because they weren’t my Mac.

Chasing the Stars is a book that takes us on a journey of undying love, unity and transformation. A road, split, by the tragedies and successes of life. A broken girl, a teenage heartthrob, an unlikely pairing, an unbreakable bond. Transcending time, over-coming obstacles, moving pass the surface, and digging deep into the soul.

I started this book one night and I didn't stop until I read it all. The author's words flowed off the pages, engrossing me, till the end. A thrilling and lovable story, that will make all the giddy romantics fall in love all over again. The purity of first love, and the reality of a happily ever after.

******
Mackenzie is starting her senior year of high school at a new school, Maverick High. Her family has moved numerous times and is barely surviving. Her father can't keep a job and he uses alcohol to curb his frustrations. Currently living in a trailer, with little to nothing to eat. His drunken stupors, turn violent and he uses his fists to take out his anger on Mackenzie. While her mother stands by, and watches on, with sorrow filled eyes.

Maverick, a place, where everyone knows everyone. Where nothing is a secret.

Getting accustomed to a new school, new teachers and mostly new students is always difficult. But meeting Miranda, her soon to be best friend, makes the transition on her first day, so much easier. Mackenzie's mission is to work hard, get a job, save enough and when she turns eighteen, she will be leaving. Being a teenage girl, she can't help but notice the hottest, most sort after guy in the school, Hayes Morgan. Just a glimpse, staring into those green depths, she gets lost in a mirage.

Hayes Morgan, the local bad boy. Highschool football jock,man-whore, and party extraordinaire. Hayes, is the son of a county judge. He's a hard worker, on and off the field. He studies hard and parties harder. With his cocky attitude and larger than life persona, he's always looking for the next adventure. And by adventure, I mean girl.

On first sight, both Mackenzie and Hayes are attracted to each other. For Makenzie her self-esteem is low, due to her current situation. Hayes is the out of reach, ultimate dream come true. For Hayes, Mackenzie is a breath of fresh air. A girl, not tainted by social status. Smart, attentive and sarcastically funny. One who gives as good as she gets. In some way, Hayes sees something different in Mackenzie, that draws him in, and makes him want to get to know her.

“It was the first time I could remember wanting to smile for no reason in a long time. Most of the time, I was smiling because I wanted in some girls panties. This time it was different. Mackenzie was hot but getting in her panties wasn’t the one thing I was thinking about. I found myself wanting to actually get to know her. Something is seriously wrong with me.”

Meeting for a second time, finally introducing themselves in Chemistry class, they become lab partners, and soon an unyielding friendship starts. As their friendship takes different turns, Hayes knows his feelings for Mackenzie are more than friendly interest. While, Mackenzie worries over Hayes interest in her. With enough time, frustration and too much luster-love from afar, Hayes claims Mac and expresses his feelings for her.

This is where the complexities of their relationship comes to the forefront and Mac's self-esteem comes even more into play. Hayes always knew the status of Mac's life. Her poverty, the abuse, her reason for getting a job. He helped her along so much through their friendship and into their relationship. Always being supportive, ensuring she had enough to eat, a comfortable, violent free place to sleep. A way to contact him, if and when she needed help. He became her sole comfort, at a time where her life was spiraling out of control.

This is what I loved so much about Hayes. He was so nurturing. It was amazing to see how he was so in tuned to Mac's feelings. He was fierce and soft, gentle and arrogant, lovable through it all.

Mac I've never felt strongly about someone other than myself before. I don't know exactly how I feel, but protecting you and caring for you comes naturally for me.

Hayes dad is a county judge, soon to be running for election. Asked to keep his relationship with Mac a secret, because her father is a criminal and his opponents would use this information against him, to hurt his campaign and malign the family and Mac.

After a particularly painful night at home, Hayes, loses his mind, and begs his father to intervene in Mac's family life. Calling child protective services, becomes a living nightmare for both Hayes and Mac. She is taken away and put through foster care. Five hours away, living with a filthy, lude foster parent, Mac runs away. Nowhere to be scene, with no way to contact her. Days later and Hayes is going out of his mind. On a night where he loses control, inebriated beyond rational thought, he ends up making out with a school mate that he despises. All the while, Mac has been trucking it just to get to Hayes. To be cocooned within his warmth, love and support.

The utter despair and devastation that Mac suffers, upon seeing Hayes kissing another girl, brings all her self-deprecation to life. Only a few days apart, and he moves on already. Belittled and hurt, she leaves, never to be heard from or seen again.

More than a year later, Hayes and Mac, accidentally meet up at a coffee shop. They are both stunned speechless. Mac running out in a frenzy. Afraid that the precious secret she is keeping will be revealed. But, all Hayes can see is Mac, he's afraid to let her go a second time. This time, he fights for the love of his life.

MY RATING ☆☆☆☆ Chasing the Stars by J.D. Rivera

4 STAR STUDDED SATURDAY NIGHT DATES

I actually enjoyed this story more than I thought I would only because it's very YA and not really a genre I tend to jump on..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The poor girl (Mackenzie Blanchard) from the trailer park meets the popular boy (Hayes Morgan) who had girls dropping like flies and a father who was a County Judge, like polar opposites you would think these two would not connect on the level they did..Beautifully written, well rounded characters whom you fall in love with..Mackenzie was not given a winning hand with the parents she has, made me sad, mad and disgusted with her mother..

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hayes always had that need to protect her

BRUISES

Your dad is the f*cking county judge and my dad is the criminal that can't keep a job, it's kind of funny that you picked me to be your friend ~ Mackenzie

Mac I've never felt strongly about someone other than myself before. I don't know exactly how I feel, but protecting you and caring for you comes naturally for me

Great YA read about a couple who, on the surface, seem to have nothing in common but are actually each other's better half. Mackenzie has a negligent mother and an abusive father and has had to move from town to town each time her father loses his job. But when she starts this latest school it seems she's caught the eye of Hayes Morgan, the school's manwhore that every girl wants. He comes from a wealthy family, and has just about every advantage.

Their relationship is complicated by her father's actions and the two are separated for a year. Mackenzie struggles to adjust to the change that completely turned her life upside down. Hayes is so miserable he turns to a girl who resembles Mackenzie. But she comes back into his life by accident, bringing along her secret.

Young love-full of angst and complications and drama. I liked this one very much and immediately jumped into the next novella about them.

Holy Cow! I tell you what! JD Rivera sent me Chasing the Stars, and needless to say I feel like my heart is about to explode! I loved Guarded and Defensive, but Chasing the Stars takes her writing to a whole new level!

Mackenzie has a crappy life: family, housing, and just about anything that goes along with it. She never stays in the same place long, but when her dad loses his job again the move they make places Hayes in her path.

Hayes is your typically player. He doesn’t commit, and lets his expectations be known. When he sees Mackenzie in class, he’s drawn to her. After spending a little time with her, he knows that they are destined to be friends. Little does he know that Mackenzie needs him more than anything. He feels as if he is there to protect her, and boy does he ever!

With the crappiest of parents, Hayes is her escape, but when they finally bring her problem to the limelight what will happen to Mackenzie? I will tell you that when part one ends, I wanted to cry, scream, and tell JD that I’m in love with these characters and this story!!!!!!!

Chasing the Stars will make you fall in love, but it will also bring a major issue in our society. I finished the story on my flight to Tampa, and I was text in JD between connecting flights. I just prayed that Mackenzie’s stubborn self wouldn’t get in the way of her happiness!

If you’re looking for a story to make you feel then Chasing the Stars is for you!

I have to say J.D. Rivera did an amazing job writing a very heart warming YA love story. The love story between Hayes and "Mac" was amazing. It begins with her as a new student at the high school...when Hayes lays his beautiful green eyes on her he is smitten, however, he doesn't do relationships and he is kind of your average non-committed, star of the football team, quarter back a-hole, to every other person until he meets Mac.
Mac is hiding a secret and doesn't want to tie anyone down with her burdens. She is written as a very independent character and you can't help but fall in love with her right along with Hayes.
This story flows quite smoothly and it is almost perfect. The only thing that stopped me from going five stars is that I didn't like the part where Mac and Hayes got separated seemed a little rushed. I don't believe in giving a way things so you will just have to read the book for yourself. I don't think that this one part of the book took away from the storyline or the love story that consumes you while you are reading.
I also love that this story is packed full of twists and turns in the plot line and some very soul gripping drama. This book will have you smiling until it hurts, laughing and even crying, (more than once) I admit I cried happy tears and sad tears all in the same book! Great Job J.D. Rivera I loved the book and I fell in love with Hayes and Mac and there beautiful love story!

Chasing the Stars is so much more than just a story of sweet young romance. The author covered many issues of a young girls fight to survive in an environment that failed to provide her with stability and love, but the one that resonated with me the most and I could relate to was the physical violence inflicted by Mackenzie’s deadbeat father, whilst her weak mother refused to intervene leaving Mac open to endure his beatings time and time again. J.D Rivera wrote Mackenzie’s character so beautifully that I instantly connected to her pain and understood her mental outlook on life. I felt so many raw emotions pour out of me as Mac learnt to remain silent in her attacks so she suffered less, finding strength to see through the darkness alone and stand on her feet with determination to finish school, and head for college as her thoughts focused on turning 18 and tearing away the chains of parental control. Now J.D Rivera knows just how to write absolutely adorable sexy and cocky heroes that are guaranteed to sweep your heroine off her feet, leave you craving such affection for yourself and hit your book boyfriend list. Hayes to me was just so sweet and amazing, yes his player status preceded him but soon as he sat down in class and turned to find the beautiful Mac sat behind him he was gone for! Hayes feelings for Mac were so unfamiliar to his nature finding himself drawn to her beauty and friendship, bringing out a fierce need in him to protect the outcast trailer park girl as she began school at Maverick. I loved how Hayes treated Mac with respect making her a constant in his life and leaving his one night stands confused and jealous with envy, seeing the poor girl get close to him. The raw passion and chemistry between Hayes and Mac sparked the pages, leaving me in a constant flutter of excitement and smiles as his thoughts relayed his love for Mac in his actions. He truly was the hero coming to Mac’s rescue and providing her with what she needed without her asking for it, brightening her life with their star gazing date nights as love blossomed between them. Once Hayes and Mac admit their feelings their new love is ripped apart by misunderstandings, leading them on separate journeys paved in heartache, new beginnings, surprises and a chance encounter to rekindle their love. A brilliant read by J.D Rivera her work keeps me on that one click!

I really am a sucker for the high school into early college books. I love reading about all the angst and horrible choices being made. It is so easy to connect with the characters because I was there , I was a moron at times !! It is so great to read and watch these characters grow up and overcome the troubles of teenage life. In this particular story some of the troubles are not as common , there is much heartbreak in this story and the characters are faced with a few "adult" type decisions and they may or may not just drive you crazy with their choices. I was hanging on to every word. I started at night and finished the next morning , I only put the book down to grab some sleep !! I am thrilled to get more and see the stories of others come to life !!

Simple storyline-
Mac- girl from the trailer park with a crappy past and horrible family life meets Hayes- popular SUPER HOT boy from the perfect family in the big huge house !!
They form a wonderful friendship that is almost instantly unbreakable. They shock just about everyone but they don't care they love spending time together. Hayes is a player , he loves to sleep around , but he never tries to sleep with Mac , should she be insulted or feel special. Mac is not the type to sleep around and she really is not looking for love. She knows there is a special connection with Hayes but she is fine being friends. Bit by bit they begin to realize their feelings are different and not something they are used to. Mac is dating , Hayes is screwing , but they have this undeniable draw. Finally we get them together but we know high school is full of drama. Not only that but Mac's parents are no good and once Hayes finds out what happens behind closed doors he is not going to let it go. Some hurdles may be too big for a teen to overcome. Mac has some life changing news to share with Hayes but a horrible event that snowballs into a huge disaster prevents her from sharing. Now she is alone and lost and Hayes is left to pick up the pieces and lets just say his actions suck but really I guess I can forgive him , he has no clue what to do......

One year later.........WoW...read this story , I mean really , it may sound simple and predictable but it was just heartbreaking and heartwarming all the same. I enjoyed every minute so I say give it a chance you may be surprised !!

Chasing the Stars is a mix of YA and NA-the main characters are high school seniors. Its completed in a dual narration which I love..

I actually read this one in one sitting-and I truly love a YA/NA book, I love seeing young love develop into such a powerful love and that's what exactly what this book was.

Mackenzie Blanchard is a broken beat down girl, moving from city to city because her drunken father can't keep a job. However, she lands herself in the one city where her life changes. Mackenzie meets Hayes Morgan- the self absorbed, jock and quite frankly the Adonis playboy.
As usual he doesn't do girlfriends, he only sleeps with them with no strings attached.

Hayes Morgan, is the judges son, no rules- and lets just face it he does have some pretty sweet parents because even at 17 years old, he drinks and he brings home girls left and right- parents are okay with that?

This is part of the story that I was sure would be realistic because really who's 17 year old parents would allow the sex, drinking etc to happen under their roof?! Mine didn't... and I have 4 girls..that wouldn't happen.. but this is fiction so anything's possible.

Any who, the story. Mackenzie and Hayes become quick friends, best friends to be exact. Something about Mackenzie has Hayes all up in protect mode, and makes it clear he's not GF material.

They have such a bond together that he's by her side even during the worst time. BUT..... during that worst time, Mac finds herself being shipped 5 hrs away with no way back home. Her young judgment causes a year and 1/2 distance withholding secrets in which will she regret?

Over all the story was really cute, and I was cheering for Hayes, he was my hero in the story.. There was times that Mac just needed to lighten up... but Hayes, he's the one. He deserves TRUE love.

*Possible spoiler*

I LOVE this story!!! I can't give it enough stars or stress how this isn't a typical young adult romance story!

While this story starts out like some of the other typical stories you read, it grows into a plot that holds SO much more than what you expected. Hayes and Mac are two high school students that lead very different life styles and are definitely from two different sides of the tracks in their small town. Hayes is the typical football player jock that likes to party and sleep around. Mac comes from a very rough home lifestyle but still works hard to succeed and be the best person she can be. They finally overcome some fears and become the best couple you could hope for but then it's shattered.

I can't stress how much I loved Hayes and his personality throughout this story! Of course, that's after he meets Mac. He goes against the grain and pursues the girl that isn't what everyone else expects and follows his own path, which can be tough as a HS boy, especially in a public spotlight.

Mac, oh this poor sweet girl! I HATE her parents but love her and her strength. This entire story speaks volumes about how girls can survive and overcome some pretty terrible and serious obstacles in life even at such a young age. Mac shows silent strength, hope, and grace in what she goes through throughout this entire story. To me, she is the epitome of a heroine for females to look at and see that a bad situation or several bad situations do not define who you are and that you can be anyone you want to be.

I won't lie, there were a few points you are like "OMG, why?!" or "Seriously?!" BUT, it makes it real. No one I know led a perfect and stupid decision free life at 17-18 years old. So, with that said, I love the realism in this story up to the last page.

This is a must read story and I promise you'll love Mac and Hayes.

College romance at it's best!

I truly enjoyed this story after being in a massive book slump... So this book definitely came as a pleasant surprise! :)

Mac and Hayes are a match made in heaven and they couldn't be more perfect for one another. Although at certain points in the book I wanted to bash their heads toghether.

Mac hasn't had an easy life growing up and due to her father they had to move around a lot, which also meant going to a different school time and time again.

This last move has brought them to Maverick, will this the place she can finally call home or will this be the place where everything blows up?

Oh Hayes my sweet sweet man and what a dushbag at times! But you just felt when he loves, he loves with all his heart.

Yes yes I know I am being all cryptic here but I want you to discover this wonderful story all by yourself! :) Trust me when I say you need to give this story a chance soon as it goes live, I promise you won't regret it!

Note: this book handles some controversial/heavy topics, not overpowering but they are there. And no I ain't telling cause you need to find out yourself! ;)

Review for Chasing the Stars by J.D. Rivera

5 out of 5 stars

Mackenzie Blanchard has a horrible life. Stuck with and abusive father and a mother who does nothing to help, she feels like no one will ever love her. Her father can’t keep a job and they keep moving from one place to the next. She doesn’t have any friends.

Sitting in class at her new school, Hayes Morgan, one of the school’s most gorgeous, popular hunks, takes a seat in front of her. Little did she know that this player would change her life forever.

Hayes Morgan does not do relationships. He is more than happy to use them and loose them. When he meets the beautiful, new girl, his whole world stops. He suddenly finds himself wanting to be with one girl: Mackenzie.

Unfortunately their lives spin out of control and lies and misunderstandings drive them apart.

J.D. Rivera has written an awesome story about young love. This author nailed this love story. She kept it simple but intriguing. My heart broke for both characters. Doing right by your family is sometimes the hardest thing to do.

This story was sweet, heart-wrenching , and hopeful all in one. The story flowed beautifully from one chapter to the next.

It's a high school/college love at its best. This isn't all hearts and flowers though. There are some heavy issues but that's what makes the book.

J.D. RIVERA HAS MOST DEFINITELY FOUND HER DESTINY IN THIS 5-STAR-STUDDED EMOTIONAL MUST READ! ‘1-CLICK’ TODAY!

Mackenzie Blanchard feels she has a terrible life with starting a new school again, but this year she is a senior in high school and one year closer from leaving her family. Mackenzie has become accustom too many things due to her father’s lack of ability to keeping his jobs. When her father get frustrated it usually leads to a downward cycle she only to familiar with these past years, her father losing his jobs, unpaid bills, drunkenness, abuse, and a mother was does nothing to assist her. Mackenzie truly does not feel loved by her family, but only burden.

While attending the first day of school, she meets Hayes Morgan, the school’s most gorgeous guy on campus with killer green eyes. She later finds out Hayes is a little of a man-wh*re, because he does not do relationships. With the new information about Hayes, Mackenzie decides to keeps Hayes on her friend zone.

When Hayes rushed to class at the last minute to find the last seat available, he never thought it would in front of the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He knew something was different though, not only was she beautiful she was also smart.

Hayes is drawn to Mackenzie so he had to know more about her, he just did not want her in his bed, spend more time wither to get to know her, he wanted to be her friend, and her protector.

“Hayes sat down next to me then put his arm around my shoulder as we leaned back. “ Look up,” he whispered. The night was gorgeous with thousands of little, white twinkling stars…I looked back up at the shy, but I could feel Hayes staring at me. It’s gorgeous. “Breathtaking,” he relied before he placed a gentle kiss on my cheek. “I wanted to show you something almost as breathtaking as you.”

Little did they both know, their amazing friendship would take them on a rollercoaster of ride changing their lives forever, so can LOVE forgive all acts of passions where the heart may not involve? Can you forgive yourself and forgive each other for LOVE? With the truth to be told, there is sometimes heartache and sometimes a new stronger bond of LOVE is formed from lessons learned and stories shared, but will Mackenzie and Hayes be strong enough to endure it all?

“I was upset that we had to keep our relationship quiet because it made me feel like a dirty little secret.”

CHASING THE STARS is an EMOTIONAL LOVE STORY that will capture your attention immediately and will be unable to put the book down. J.D. Rivera’s novel, CHASING THE STARS, and has done a magnificent job writing a captivating story that will have you feel as if you are on an emotional roller coaster of emotions of COMPASSION, SADNESS, ANGER, DISTRUST, FORGIVENESS, FRIENDSHIP, and LOVE.

Original Blog Post: Blog Tour & eARC Review: Chasing the Stars by J.D. Rivera

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Chasing the Stars is truly a sweet book, although I had to laugh when I realized how old the main characters were - I assumed they were seniors in college, not in high school! However, there are many stories (and quite a few couples I know) about teens who were high school sweethearts and are still together today, which makes J.D. Rivera quite the sentimental, and romantic, author.

Mackenzie is a serious, aloof girl. She doesn't have any choice as she's been forced to move from town to town, just waiting for the day her father gets drunk enough to be fired from his current job and uproot his family to search for another. Neither can she afford to have friends because they'll be left behind, anyway. And it's easy to believe the lie she is no-good trailer trash. But there's a little glimmer of hope in her senior year. She meets friends who don't care about her parentage or where she lives and catches the interest of the hottest boy in school.

Hayes knows he's hot because all the girls tell him so. Man-whore (or boy-whore?) to the extreme, he'll sleep with anyone who has the right parts, all the while letting them know he's only into them for the sex. It's a credit to his charm when girls chase after him despite his behavior. He's happy with his life, until his new seatmate is also the new girl in school - and has no interest in being his girlfriend or a romantic interest of any sort.

Mac is the perfect girl friend for Hayes to express his sensitive, caring side to. She needs protection and doesn't mind when he hooks up with yet another female. But Hayes apparently cares when his teammate Jace shows interest in Mackenzie. Is friendship enough or should he push for more?

While the main characters were all in high school, they were facing very serious and adult problems and choices. There's no belittling these teens' situations, either. Each choice would affect their lives in a huge way and it's the support (or lack of it) from friends and family that helps them make their decisions.

It's not a surprise that Mac handles herself much better than Hayes. Although, I can't fault him. While he reacts as expected for a high school senior, when he becomes aware of the situation Mac is in, he is as mature as someone in his thirties. If only there were more people like his, regardless of age!

The unexpected maturity shown in Chasing the Stars makes this work of J.D. Rivera something I'd recommend as required reading for teens! It's not just fun, after all. The party has to come to an end sometime and guess who's responsible for the clean-up?

Chasing the Stars by J.D. Rivera

"Chasing the Stars" begins with a teenage boy, Hayes, who fills his nights with most anyone from the opposite sex. He's a one night only performer and swears that the girls know the score before they even get involved with him. Hayes is the star quarterback and the son of the county judge. One could say that his life has been somewhat privileged.

Mackenzie is the new girl in town. She's moved around a ton on account of her deadbeat father always losing his job. She lives in a crappy trailer and walks on eggshells to prevent the physical abuse she knows is coming (and with a mother who, not only won't intervene, but makes excuses for the bastard!!!!)

Hayes and Mackenzie meet at school. Of course, Mackenzie thinks that Hayes is hot but her self esteem is pretty much shot. Hayes thinks that the new girl has an appeal that makes him want to know more about her; not only to get into her panties. They start out as friends. Feeling each other out. The back and forth between the two of them heightens the magnetism between Hayes and Mac. As the complexity of their friendship gets out of hand, Hayes has no choice but to lay claim on Mac.

I absolutely fell in love with this story. The initial meeting between Mac and Hayes reminded me of high school days when you were unsure of yourself but you truly wanted to believe that the other person was as into you as you were into them.....*sigh* Anyway, the story took off with me in tow. I honestly could not stop reading this book. I ignored dishes and laundry just so I could see what would happen next. I even read while I was in the shower. (Yes. In. The. Shower!!!!) Lol.

Hayes was a loveable character. An asshole at times, which he openly admitted to, but mostly a guy who hadn't found "the one" who captured his full attention. I can honestly say that the female lead character is usually a hard sell for me. Either she's too flippy or too stuck up her own butt or too clingy or....you get the point. But in this book, I could actually identify with Mackenzie and her insecurities. This story was so real for me. Not the guy who has a million dollar company that gets the girl. Just a handsome small town guy who messes around and makes mistakes, then kicks his own ass for his mistakes when he realizes it a little late. (C'mon. That hasn't happened to you before?)

Will Mackenzie and Hayes stand the test of time? Don't just sit there. Go find out.
Happy Reading!!!

4 Stars!

Chasing the Stars is a story that may be hard for some people to read but definitely worth it in the end. It was difficult to read about Mackenzie's situation, but I loved seeing that she was able to over come the hurdles that she was constantly having to deal with. Mackenzie didn't live the life of a normal high school student. She was constantly moving from city to city, so she never really had any close friends. Her parents also were not the best parents to have and unfortunately, she was always having to deal with them as well. On Mackenzie's first day of her senior year of high school, she became good friends with Miranda, and got the attention of one of the hottest guys in school, the football quarterback, the guy that all girls wanted and most guys wanted to be...Hayes.

Hayes is the player of the school. Everyone knows that he isn't one to settle with just one girl. He's never been the relationship type, but when he first meets Mackenzie, things start to change. He knows that she's better then just a one night stand. Their relationships starts out as friends, but by Hayes being friends with Mac, and not using her the way he uses most of the girls in school, unwanted attention is drawn towards her.

The relationship between Hayes and Mac was cute. I loved that Hayes was there for Mackenzie when she needed him while they were friends. I loved seeing Hayes change from the player with no remorse to someone with such a caring heart. Hayes' personality was really playful when it came to Mac, which I enjoyed as well. When their relationship finally changed from friends to more, he made it perfectly clear what he wanted....

"I want this, Mackenzie. I want you, but I'm not sharing you with anyone and you're not sharing me."

I really enjoyed Chasing the Stars. There were moments I cried, there were moments I laughed, and there were moments I swooned! I also loved the way it ended. Throughout this story, I felt that we were able to see the characters go from high school kids dealing with life's unexpected challenges to responsible adults overcoming the odds. I am looking forward to reading more in Miranda and Brad's story!

Mackenzie Blanchard is this beautiful girl who has been dealt a crappy poker hand in life. All she cares about is getting through her senior year and getting far away from her horrible parents. Then she meets Hayes Morgan.

Hayes Morgan is the hottest guy at school and every girl wants him but that is not how he rolls. All he wants is to get in them panties and get out with no strings attached. He cares about no one but his family. Girlfriends are not even in his vocabulary. But when he walked into his AP English class that all changed.

Chasing the Stars was amazing. I love Mackenzie and Hayes and their story is heart-breaking and beautiful. I love the friendship that the two to them have and even more how it turned into a romance. A romance that was too short for how great it was but how can a romance last when one disappears. When Mackenzie just up and disappears it tears Hayes apart but he is determined to look everywhere for her until he finds her again. But once he finds her everything has changed. Will they be able to rekindle the love they once had? Or will the secrets they now have since Mackenzie’s disappearance rip that dream to shreds? Their lives have changed significantly, but will that bring them together or tear them apart. Pick up Chasing the Stars today and find out. You won’t regret it!

The ending of Chasing the Stars is absolutely perfect! When I finished it was all I could do was be sad. I didn’t want the story to end. I could read about Mackenzie and Hayes all day long if given the chance. Oh and the Saturday night dates, they were absolute adorable and I loved every single one of them. Super freaking cute! I think I may copy off them and do the same with Lee! Sorry Lee…But you are now officially booked for every Saturday night from here on out…Love you!

J.D. Justice you did an awesome job with this book and I am so happy that you asked me to read it. It was so amazing that I couldn’t put it down not even to talk to my fiancée on the phone when he called. I literally said, “I can’t talk I have to finish this book, I will call you later, “and hung up. While reading Chasing the Stars I wanted to do nothing but read it until I finished!

3 Star read

Story type: Contemporary, HS and College, NA

Storyline: This is the story of Hayes and Mackenzie. They meet on the first day of their senior year of high school. Mac just moved to town after her abusive father lost another job (they move around a lot). There is an instant attraction, but they decide to become friends. Hayes is a manwhore and doesn't do relationships, but he wants something more with Mac. They finally decide to give it a go but are required to hide their relationship because Hayes dad is about to go up for reelection as a judge and is worried about being connected to Mac's criminal father. Some unfortunate things happen and Mac ends up leaving before graduation. They are reconnected a year later and work through the misunderstandings and find their HFN.

POV: Alternating between Mac and Hayes POV

Overall Pace of Story: I though the Pace was kinda too fast...by 30%ish they are declaring their love. Now I understand that the whole story takes place during all of senior year in HS to the 2nd year in college in the epilogue (which is a pretty long period of time), but it was just too quick in some aspects for me.

H rating: 3 stars. Hayes. He was just ok...kinda a jerk to everyone except Mac.

h rating: 3 stars. Mackenzie. She was just ok

Angst level: Low. No tears, and kinda stupid drama.

Heat level: Low. Fade to black type scenes.

Descriptive sex: No

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: I would say not a HEA, but a HFN. We do get a jump into the future but it would've been nice to have a little more closure .

This is the first book written by J.D. Rivera that I've read and I loved it!

Mackenzie Blanchard and Hayes Morgan couldn't be more different: she is the poor girl, living in a trailer park with her unloving parents, that does her best to find a way out of there; he is the rich boy, with a great and loving family, Mr. Popular in school. But when their paths cross, their connection is instant.
Mackenzie and Hayes become friends and later, even though they try to fight their feelings, they become a couple.
But things at Mackenzie home become unbearable and when Hayes decides to ask his father for help, Mackenzie is sent away. When she tries to come back, a misunderstanding makes her doubt Hayes's love and she leaves.
One year later, their paths cross again. They still love each other, but Mackenzie is hiding something from Hayes and Hayes is afraid that something he has done will send Mackenzie running again.
Will they find their happy ending?

Chasing The Stars is a great book with a sweet and heart-warming story, full of emotion. The situations depicted keep the reader captivated and unable to stop reading.

Mackenzie had a rough childhood, always moving because of her alcoholic and abusive father and a mother who didn't do anything to stop him. She knows she has to work hard to be able to have a better life. Although young, she is very strong and fierce.
Hayes is your typical high school player. He is popular and every guy wants to be his friend and every girl wants to date. But he never dates, only has casual encounters. When he meets Mackenzie, everything changes. He wants more. After Mackenzie left, he becomes numb and only when he encounters her again he regains his happiness.

J.D. Rivera wrote an amazing book, very well written, with a compeling story and with great characters. Can't wait to read Chasing Each Other and Miranda and Brad's story!

I enjoyed this book. I took this book on to review because YA is just not my cup of tea. I normally don't read that genre but this blurb spoke to me. And in the end, I am so glad that I decided to read. This book was really good. With elements of YA and NA, this book will take you on an emotional journey with two people who will have to fight for each other.

Full of twists and turns, this romance will take you from high school to college, following two people who were meant for each other but had a lot of obstacles to face. This book will make you believe in love and happy endings. This book will make you believe in REAL fairytales and that love is not always easy but worth it in the end. This book will talk you on a roller coaster of emotions and throw a few curveballs at you so hang on for the ride.

This is Mackenzie and Hayes’s story. Mackenzie is just barely making it by in life. Living in a non-ideal situation, she is very much a loner, not making connections or real friends. But when she meets Hayes, the popular kid at her new school, he is going to make her want things she has never had or wanted before. He is going to make her feel special and wanted. But nothing lasts forever . . .

Hayes is a popular kid in school with tons of friends and girls falling at his feet. He truly is a one night kind of guy but when he meets Mac, he knows she is different. She makes him work for things. She makes him want more. She makes him see a future. But sometimes things happen and you lose everything in the blink of an eye, leaving you broken . . .

I liked these two together. Mac made this book. She was so strong and resilient yet so broken. My heart bled for her in this book. I also liked Hayes. He broke the barriers in high school when he went for Mac. I was rooting for these two even when it seemed impossible because it definitely did at times. I cannot wait for more of these character in future books!

I recommend this book!

This book kept me reading in be until on a Sunday afternoon and I regret nothing! I was completely pulled into this second chance love story and read this in one sitting.

Mackenzie has just started at a new high school. Most students would be nervous about this but she is used to it, her parents don't stay in one place for very long so putting down roots anywhere just isn;t an option. Mackenzie's father is an alcoholic who drifts from one job to another and is prone to taking out all of his frustrations on her.

Hayes Morgan is in her first class of the day and she definitely takes notice of this gorgeous guy who seems to befriend her on her first day. This strange coupling seems to confuse all the other students who have never seen the 'man whore' Hayes just being friends with a girl. As Hayes gets to know Mac more he learns just how awful her home life really is and he becomes very protective of her. It feels good to have someone looking out for her and it further cements their friendship.

Eventually friendship turns to more and these two face the truth, that they feel more for each other. I love seeing a guy who is a bit of a douche having that light bulb moment and being completely swept up with a girl who is his 'one.'

When everything seems to be going along nicely, Hayes does something that has huge consequences for them both and Mac in turn discovers something that changes everything. In the blink of an eye Mac has vanished and Hayes is left absolutely heartbroken.

One year later Hayes walks into a coffee shop and there Mac is. The girl who haunts his dreams is right there in front of him. Both of them have changed over the past twelve months and there is a lot to talk about. When all the truth comes out will they find that there has been too much water under the bridge to remain friends?

I loved this sweet second chance love story, especially the last few chapters *swoon* Perfect weekend read to just escape into a book.

Mackenzie, or Mac, has just moved to the town of Maverick, and she has decided that she is just going to try to survive this year, her senior year of high school, until she can get away from her family and get to college. Her home life is a daily struggle, and her dad continues to lose jobs, causing them to move around a lot, so she doesn't even have much to depend on outside of herself. That all changes in Maverick, though.

Hayes is sort of the town golden boy, although, he is also a huge jerk. What do you get when you mix an extremely hot, athletic, wealthy boy who is the son of the town judge, and plenty of girls that let him walk all over him? You get Hayes - jerky playboy. When he meets Mackenzie on the first day of school, however, he sees the brokenness in her. He's usually the "hit it and quit it" type, but he actually gets to know Mackenzie, or Mac, as he calls her, and he feels so drawn to protect her.

Hayes and Mac form a friendship, first, because neither one of them knows how to be in a relationship. They are both drawn to one another, and slowly fall into a relationship that is much more than friendship. One thing that really bothered me is that Hayes is really a jerk to all of the girls that he has slept with, like verbally abusive kind of jerk, and this doesn't put Mac off in any way. She is definitely a product of her homelife and upbringing, in that her self-worth is basically at ground zero. She doesn't even hit pause, though, when she witnesses how Hayes can be. Hayes is completely different with Mac, though, so it's possible that there is that one person for everyone.

Life has never been easy for Mac, though, and that pattern just continues. The problems that she had before meeting Hayes are still there, and they will try to tear the two apart. Can these two make it, even though everything around them has destined for them to fail?

Mackenzie is starting her senior year of high school in yet another school. Her and her parents move a lot, usually after her dad loses his job and they can’t pay their bills. Also getting out of bed and feeling sore is unfortunately, not a new thing either. Her father takes out his frustrations of unemployment on liquor bottles and her, usually with his fists.
Sitting in class on the first day of school, she is befriended by a sweet girl, Miranda. She fills Mackenzie in on the senior class and helps to ease the nervousness that comes with being the new kid. A hot guy comes in talking to his friends and sits in front of them. Mackenzie notices how gorgeous the guy is and then Miranda fills her in on Hayes, the hottie in the next row. He is a heartbreaker, sleeping with girls and on to the next, never with the same girl twice. He chats with her, maybe even flirting alittle, but Mackenzie doesn’t need that drama in her life. She plans on keeping Hayes a friend, but that is it.
When Hayes and Mackenzie start spending more time together, their relationship begins to change. The man-whore has reformed and only hangs out with Mackenzie these days. But when pressures from the outside world start affecting their relationship, will they be strong enough to stay together? When you make decisions in the heat of the moment, keeping the truth from the one you love can they ever forgive you and can you forgive yourself?
Great story and I loved Hayes by the end. I understand Mackenzie’s side of things but was so frustrated with the running away. Great characters and HEA, so I am thrilled with the ending. 4.5 stars

JD Riveria gives her readers a sweet high school romance with a little drama to keep things interesting. Chasing the Stars brings us Mackenzie and Hayes. She's the school's resident trailer trash, while he's the resident popular jock. We all know how this story goes...or do we?

Mackenzie is in yet another new town and another new school. This is her senior year, so all she has to do is finish it so she can head off to college far, far away from the life she knows now. Always being the new girl, Mackenzie knows the drill, keep her head down and to herself. She doesn't go out of her way to make friends because she ends up having to leave them at a moments notice anyway.

Hayes rules the high school and the ladies of it. Known for not keeping a girl for more than one night, Mackenzie interests him, although he can't figure out why. From day one he's made her talk to him and even got her to let him in the "friend zone", so he starts pushing for more. The down side is her past can't be known due to his present. From a mile away you see there's nothing but heart ache ahead for these two.

Hayes pulls out all the stops for Mac, none the less things happen and they don't work out. I am reviewing vague as to not spoil the story line. Reading along, the book felt predictable, however I liked the spin JD Rivera put on it. Written well and from dual POV's Chasing the Stars wasn't my typical read as it was more YA, but still a great story with a little epilogue to wrap things up nicely.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I read the blurb on the back of the book, beyond knowing I wanted to read it. I wasn't prepared for the emotional story I experienced. Mackenzie Blanchard is just trying to make it through high school so she can get out of the life she's been living and make something of her self. She's hoping her senior year will go by quickly. Hayes Morgan has lived a pretty charmed life, but something about Mac calls to him and he finds himself changing the way he thinks about many things.

The story was really fast paced and I liked that. I liked Mackenzie and empathized with her. I liked Hayes was trying to be better, but I did not like the way he treated the girls he slept with. There really was no excuse for it. It seemed like he wasn't really as upfront and honest about his intentions as he tried to be. I really did not like Mac's parents. Those two were something else.

There was quite a bit of drama going on in the book and I enjoyed most of it. I couldn't put the book down and read it very quickly. I am interested in seeing who Brad ends up with. I'm hoping the series will continue and I'll be able to catch up with everyone and see how they're doing in the future.

This is my first read by JD Rivera and she did not disappoint. Chasing the Stars is a YA novel that is very heart-warming, yet heart-breaking.
Mackenzie Blanchard doesn't have an easy life. When she is yet again forced to move and attend a new school her senior year she is just hoping for the best and ready to get it over with.
Hayes Morgan is Mr.Popular, he is conceded and comes from wealth. He just wants random hook-ups and is not interested in commitment at all. When he spots the new girl he is completely drawn to her.
Mackenzie and Hayes have this undeniable connection. As their unlikely friendship grows they can't deny the chemistry that they feel when they're around each other. Until one day the girl Hayes grew to love disappears.
After a year apart, their lives collide and both have secrets that could bring them back together or possibly destroy them for good.
This is one read that you will not be able to put down once you get started. Even though it's a YA read, the characters deal with very adult situations. I really loved how Mackenzie and Hayes friendship grew, it brought out a side of Hayes that I couldn't help but fall in love with. This is a great book and I recommend one-clicking. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Chasing The Stars, interesting story.
From the start up to the last, the emotions of the characters are felt.
I was easily got attached to the characters and their emotions.

The characters, Hayes and Mackenzie are interesting.
Both characters are good and they were easy to relate with.
Hayes, for me he has this bad boy aura and he’s not that keen with relationships.
Mackenzie or Mac on the other hand, a strong willed woman.
I love strong she is despite the things that happened to her.
Both characters are easy to relate with.

The story, interesting story that will made you emotional all throughout!
The way the story started is good, it made me want
to read more of what will happen next to Hayes and Mac,
on how the two will meet and become friends and what will happen to them onwards.
As the story goes by, both characters grew into a more interesting person and responsibilities.
It made me love the story yet want to smack
some sense to some of the characters.
Anyway, the story just got more intense as the story comes to an end (with all the drama that will definitely want to make you punch something and cry).
JD Rivera made a good job in making Chasing The Stars
an interesting and full of emotions up to the end!

Have you ever read one of those books that just makes you feel good? This is definately a Teen and Young Adult book. MacKenzie is a high school senior, who has just moved to yet another new school. She's new in town and going through all the trials and tribulations of someone new to town. Family drama, boyfriend drama, girl angst drama, work, school, etc. This book truly does feel realistic, and having been through high school or going through high school, you may relate to some of what MacKenzie is going through. Enter Hayes, friend, protector and savior. See how much the drama ramps up as he takes MacKenzie under his wing to protect her. Warm fuzzy feelings abound by the end of this book and hopefully make you feel at peace as much as I do after having finished it. I cannot wait for book #2, Chasing Each Other to come out in July so that I can read it!
