Rate this book
Two strangers. Two secrets. One explosive collision.

Dr. Colin Clarke thought he had the perfect life — a respected career, a beautiful wife, a happy home. Then Liz vanishes. And the messages begin.

Someone knows what happened. Someone wants him to dig.

But the deeper Colin dives into Liz’s past, the darker it gets — lies, betrayal, a life she kept hidden. And the closer he gets to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes.

Miles away in a quiet Irish town, bus driver Owen Ryan watches his wife slip into dementia. But Owen has secrets too — a dark past he can’t escape and a dangerous obsession pulling him toward someone who might know too much.

Two men. Two unraveling lives. Two paths hurtling toward a collision course with a truth that could destroy them both.

Her Family Secrets is a gripping psychological thriller where two parallel stories race toward a devastating intersection. Not everyone will survive.

This was such a gripping read! I was hooked from the start and found myself constantly trying to piece things together. It's a dual POV book, which I usually enjoy more. The two storylines felt completely separate at first, but when they finally started coming together (around the 80% mark), it all just clicked.

I really bonded with the characters and felt pulled into their world. There’s this eerie tension throughout that kept me on edge in the best way.

That said, I was left wanting just a little more clarity, like, who’s actually “good” or “bad”? But maybe that was the point, and honestly, it added to the intrigue. I do have some unanswered questions about a character's part in the texting. The ending definitely leaves the reader wanting more. A more satisfying ending would have made me rate the book 5 stars.

Perfect for fans of slow-burning, character-driven thrillers with morally grey twists and emotional depth. I enjoyed the psychological tension over graphic violence.

Definitely an author I’ll be keeping an eye on. I’ll be recommending this one!

We follow Two POVs
Colin is an OB/GYN in Chicago, whose wife vanishes one day and he starts getting weird messages
Owen is a bus driver in Ireland, who used to live in Chicago, and is taking care of his wife who has dementia
Two strangers, two secrets. How do they connect?

While I don’t get triggered, I would say to check your TW. Miscarriage, pregnancy, bulimia to name a few.

I struggled a little bit at the beginning. We were introduced to characters and situations that felt like we were supposed to already know who they were and what was going on.
The writing itself felt disjointed, it jumped around too much and I couldn’t stay connected.

It also could’ve been a bit shorter. Nothing really started happening until about the 30% mark, and even from then it was very slow going.
It did start to pick up around 60% and things got interesting. But honestly, for the majority of the book I was bored.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced especially towards the end and absolutely gripping. Owen was so creepy. I knew right from the start he was up to no good. I could totally picture his house. The way Alison gave little hints to what he was up to was clever and left me wanting more. I liked the two points of view. They helped build the suspense. There was a lot going on and some complex issues covered. Well worth a read if you love thrillers.

Regardless of whatever the rest of the review or the rating say, Her Family Secrets is the best book I’ve read that I almost DNFed (did not finish) twice in the first chapter. Overall, the novel is a solid thriller from a debut author, and I’m happy I did end up reading through to the end.

Two points of view run mostly parallel to each other throughout the book. Colin is a well-respected doctor putting in countless hours to help bring new lives into the world. Owen, I hope it isn’t too much of a spoiler to say, does the opposite. Both characters have voices that are very distinct from each other, which is always a big sticking point for me.

Both dialogue and prose for the most part are strong as well. The description is visceral and cinematic enough to the point I could picture virtually every scene easily. Because I was so drawn into the story by the writing style, the few implausibilities or issues jumped out more. The medical procedures at the clinic are described at length and seem well-researched, but are inconsistent with other medical terms used, especially when it comes to fertility issues experienced by the main couple. So much time and effort at the start is put into making Colin’s insane schedule seem believable, both work and his…tastes, but those constraints don’t seem to mean much at for most of the novel. Stronger focus and pacing to support the brilliance of the writing style would do wonders in the next story.

Despite the title being “Her” secrets, the dueling points of view are both men. The work as a whole is also surprisingly male-centric even though both Colin and his missing wife work in labor and delivery. Women are seen in a very poor light throughout, and the marriage isn’t really a loving one for reasons. The age gap, one that gets described a little late, and I was honestly surprised by, only seems to perpetuate some of the problems for me. The first of the near DNFs is because of a line that happens in the middle of a dinner party: “The image of their dead baby floating in his wife’s uterus flashed abruptly in his head.” It’s abrupt for the reader too. Even more so when framed with the context that these miscarriages and fertility issues are almost all about Colin and not his wife. He does end up showing a little clarity at points, but they are few, far between, and never lasting.

The title is definitely right about one thing. Her Family Secrets holds more than just one. Almost no one in the main cast of this novel is completely innocent by design, but readers will still likely find at least one character to root for.

Her Family Secrets by Alison Lyle is a psychological thriller that grabs you from the first chapter and never lets go, not even after the ending. I'm sure if I'd put my life on hold for one day, I would have finished the book in one sitting.

I love the two POVs (Colin and Owen's stories): two intricately intertwined characters whose worlds collide frightfully in the heart-pounding conclusion.

The author knows how to keep the reader in suspense as Colin races to figure out the disappearance of his wife Liz. All signs point to her abandoning the marriage after several unsuccessful pregnancies. But the puzzle becomes more complex as Colin digs further, uncovering signs of something more sinister, foul play. Is it Liz doing or has she become one of Owen's victims?

Owen's chapters are equally haunting, a man caring for his wife with dementia while cycling through young caretakers who mysteriously disappear. His connection to Liz isn't immediately clear, but as the threads pull together, a devastating family legacy emerges. Some secrets are buried in DNA itself.

Every character is flawed, scarred by family secrets and misdoings, which manifests in Colin's bulimia (a result of his mother abandoning him as an infant) and his wife's passive personality (a product of her parents). The cruelest irony? They've built their lives in Obstetrics, Colin as a doctor, Liz as a nurse, immersed in the miracle of birth while unable to create their own. Every delivery room success is a mirror of their failure, every newborn a reminder of what they've lost. Two people scarred by abandonment and secrets, convinced a child will repair what their parents broke, blind to the pattern threatening to repeat itself.

The author weaved this story perfectly, never a dull moment, never giving away clues but leaving the reader holding their breath to the very end. I highly recommend this gripping psychological thriller.

📚 Title: Her Family Secrets
✍️ Author: Alison Lyle
⭐ Rating: 2/5
📆Publication Date: June 17th 2025
📖 Format: eARC via Booksprout

Just like Colin got dragged to Spain by his crazy mother in law I was dragged through this book it felt like.

🧠 My Thoughts:
While Her Family Secrets had potential, this one ultimately didn’t work for me.

There are several heavy themes throughout the book that may be triggering for some readers. In particular, there are frequent and graphic references to binge eating and the “release” that follows. Additionally, the book includes disturbing portrayals of pregnancy, miscarriages, and mothers expressing a desire to get rid of their children. These topics may be especially difficult for expecting moms or anyone sensitive to pregnancy loss or maternal mental health struggles.

Pacing wise, the story felt inconsistent and often disjointed. It jumped around a lot, making it hard to stay connected, and some scenes felt incomplete or underdeveloped. It was also longer than it needed to be, with twist after twist that didn’t always feel necessary or earned.

That said, there were a few highlights. Around the 60% mark, the pacing picked up, and by 80%, I was more engaged and curious to see how things would end. The final portion of the book was the strongest, and the short chapters helped move things along.

🗣️ Would I recommend it?

Not broadly. Readers who enjoy dark family dramas or slow-burn thrillers might find something here but I’d urge caution if you’re sensitive to disordered eating or pregnancy-related trauma.

A chaotic psychological creeper that will keep you gasping until the final pages!!

‘Her Family Secrets’ is a parallel story following labor and delivery doctor, Collin, desperate to find his missing wife. It also follows bus driver, Owen, dark and mysterious man, with a questionable past doing questionable things. As Collin unravels a sprawling tree of family secrets to find his wife, he ultimately learns that family is everything. Or is it?

The character development of Colin and Owen was fantastic, unique psyches with a solid touch of humanity to each character. I was able to fully connect with Colin quite early into the read. The emotional calamity of following his internal and external challenges was enjoyably messy and immersive.

The start of the read felt ever so slightly difficult to get through, as the jump cuts between characters seemed harsh. This resolves about 35% of the way through, after better understanding the structure and storyline.

I had mentioned that the start was chaotic but in reflection, it seemed intentionally written for a slight sense of confusion to parallel the main character. Like a rollercoaster, the story has a gradual upward start, and the descent is jolting pivots and corkscrews.

This book reads as if Gone Girl (Gillian Flynn) and The Pitt (TV series 2025) were combined into one. If you enjoy elements of psychology, thrillers, and good hunt for the truth story, this is a book to pick up. It will keep you glued until the very end.

Let me just start by saying I couldn’t put Her Family Secrets down. I picked it up on a Sunday night thinking I’d read a chapter or two before bed — and the next thing I knew, it was 3 in the morning. That’s the kind of book this is.

Allison Lyle has a way of pulling you in from the first page.

The story centers on Colin, the perfect man who has a secret of his own trying to find his wife who has multiple secrets that has trapped her in a web of deceit. Lyle nailed that atmosphere — the tension, the descriptions of the five senses. I could literally smell the rabbit room.

What really hit home for me was the relationship between all of the characters. It was messy, complicated, and so CRAZY.

It’s not just about uncovering a shocking secret (though there is one — and believe me, I did not see it coming); it’s about what those secrets do to a family, especially when they’ve been buried for so long. Lyle did a really good job at building up the story and through out it you question “what does that have to do with anything” BUT by the end everything makes sense and you’ll think. What in the hell did I just read.

If you like stories with heart, grit, and a little touch of suspense, I highly recommend Her Family Secrets. It’ll make you think about the stories your own family tells — and the ones it doesn’t.

Dr. Colin Clarke thought he had it all — a thriving career, a loving wife, and a peaceful home. But everything changes when Liz vanishes... and the cryptic messages start arriving.
Someone knows the truth. And they want Colin to find it.
As he digs deeper into Liz’s past, Colin uncovers secrets he was never meant to know — hidden betrayals, buried lies, and a side of her life she kept from him. And the more he learns, the more dangerous the path becomes.
Meanwhile, in a small Irish town, Owen Ryan quietly watches his wife fade into dementia. But Owen carries dark secrets of his own — and when his mind begins to spiral, his gaze shifts to someone new. Someone who might know more than they should.
Two men. Two stories. One truth that could unravel everything.

I’m glad I stuck with this one, because everything really does come together in the end. It’s a gripping story full of lies, deception, and some genuinely unsettling moments. With several storylines unfolding at once, it keeps you curious and constantly wondering how it’s all going to fit together.
The ending has a solid twist that ties everything up and brings some real clarity, which I appreciated.
That said, I’m giving it 3.5 stars because some parts felt a bit over-the-top, and the way the medical profession is portrayed might not sit well with everyone. A few things definitely stretched believability, which took me out of the story now and then.
Also, be sure to check for trigger warnings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Liz and Colin live a seemingly perfect life. After meeting in the labor and delivery ward of the hospital, the doctor and nurse end up getting married and trying to start a family, leading to multiple miscarriages. When Liz goes missing Colin realizes he doesn’t really know his wife at all. Owen, a bus driver living in Ireland with his wife who has early onset dementia has secrets of his own that make his life messy. It’s a dual POV between the men that throws you for constant loops. 🔁 thank you Booksprout and Alison Lyle for the ARC ✨🫶🏻

I seriously couldn’t put this one down. There are definitely a lot of trigger warnings (as there are in most thrillers) so definitely read those before proceeding. So much happened I feel like I need to re-read it to grasp it all. The whole time I had predictions and they were all wrong. I do honestly feel like there were almost too many plot points and secrets that all seemed far fetched. In general it was great and definitely an interesting ride. Especially the epilogue 🤯.

TW: stillbirth, miscarriage, mental health struggles, eating disorders, drug use, abuse of many forms. Check trigger warnings as you should with all dark thrillers.

Her Family Secrets has the potential to become a really good psychological thriller. The story moves at a pretty fast pace and the plot itself is pretty captivating and sucks you in. However, I spent most of the book being confused. We had Colin, who is a very busy dr. Him and his wife have been trying to conceive but wasn't having any luck. After the most recent miscarry, Liz, disappears. Colin starts receiving weird texts from her phone, but he knows it isn't her just by the way she's talking.
Then we have Craig, a bus driver that has some very twisted tastes and an obsession with rabbits and cages.
This is where I was confused. The characters were kind of thrown at us and I had no idea who they were and how they were connected for most of the book. I felt like I was reading two separate books with 2 different story lines until it started to tie in closer to the end. I also felt like we needed a little more backstory on Craig. The flow of the story was just off for me because there wasn't any connection to the two main male characters until the end. The plot is very intriguing though and I thought it was pretty unique.

This is a really intriguing book to read with lots of different storylines going on at the same time. I didn’t give it 5 see the only negative at bottom of review.

At first I was a little confused how it all fitted together - keep reading, all will become clear!

Exciting, thought provoking, gruesome and sometimes just really scary. Characters are well thought out and storyline/plot is really good. Highlights some real issues like compulsions and fertility problems.

Absolutely brilliant ending and all loose ends tied up with a final sting in the tail!

The only negative I have is that some of it is a little unbelievable and potentially puts the medical profession in a bad light. (I’m a nurse myself & its absolutely not possible for any Doctor to be practicing in this continual, no sleep/break mode for weeks as implied in the book) I feel it needs to be reworded slightly - just a suggestion.

I am a sucker for psychological thrillers. But I am almost always apprehensive about starting a new one, especially from authors who aren’t that well-known. “Her Family Secrets” checked all the boxes of a good-to-great psychological thriller, and I am glad I started it. It’s like finding a diamond in the rough.

It does take some time to get used to the two plot lines, but when you do, the story is rewarding. It had all the elements of an exciting and thrilling experience. The characters were compelling, the structure was sound, and the pacing was fantastic. I liked that the story didn’t shy away from making you uncomfortable and kept you guessing. There are elements in the story that may not be for everyone, especially some characters' decision-making and motivations, but I think it was apt for the story.
I would give it a 4.5 stars, but as it isn’t an option, I am gonna give it 5. It is definitely worth checking out, especially for the fans of this genre.

Thank you Alison Lyle and Booksprout for an ARC edition of this book for my honest review.

I give this book 3.5 stars, rounded to 4. I think this is a great debut novel and I will definitely be following Alison Lyle to see what comes next.

This book is called Her Family Secrets, but is told as dual POV of two men, Colin and Owen. The book takes you on a roller coaster ride and I was buckled in. Check trigger warnings before reading, there are topics that can be overwhelming and because there are moments that can be a little abrupt.

I will be recommending this book to people that are in the mood for a psychological thriller with characters that are still somewhat relatable and I found myself rooting for. I really enjoyed the way the storylines came together in the end and left me satisfied with what I had just read.

Her Family Secrets, the dark but dazzling debut novel from author Alison Lyle is aptly named.
And I should have been paying better attention to that!
This is no cookie-cutter thriller. I found the tale to be equal parts impressive, but sometimes maddening. I was often dumbfounded, yet enthralled. Truthfully, there was a time there when I thought the plot might fall apart, that we had been sold a bill of goods - that there was no way that any author could tie seemingly mismatched pieces together. Trust me, if you find yourself often quick to give up on a book, don't quit on this one. Lyle brings it all together masterfully!
If you like dark fiction, but need a warm and fuzzy climax - this isn't it. However, if you want something altogether different, a story that refuses to be restricted by what's come before, something chock full of twists and turns you think you see coming, but won't, give this author a chance to grab you by the throat and take you on a journey you have to read to believe.
She's got my attention.

I struggled with what rating to give this book. I truly loved it, however, I felt it was rushed through. No one just jumps in their car and makes as many trips back and forth as Colin. You think he was one place, the next paragraph would start, and he was somewhere else, and you had to read a bit to find out what was going on. The story overall was okay. A doctors wife leaves, and you wonder why as they seemed to be a perfect couple. I almost could see where the book was going the whole time, but there were a couple twists I wasn't prepared for. Overall, well written, and I'd be happy to read something else by this author.

* To be transparent, I was given an advanced copy of this book to review, and I'm very glad I did. It gave me a new author to follow.

Rounded up to a 3.5.

I liked the premise of this book but I did find it a bit hard going. I liked the idea of having chapters dedicated to two different characters but at times I felt it interrupted the pacing and made it a bit clunky. I also found it overly descriptive in parts. I was tempted to give up about half way through but I'd say the last 25% of the book really kicked it up a notch and the story came together more, so I'm glad I persevered.

I did enjoy the writing style and the overall storyline, I just would have preferred it to be a bit quicker paced.

Thank you to Hidden Gems for giving me this book as an ARC.

Holy Cow! I was all over the place reading this one! I think my heart is still racing from all of the twists that came about! From the psycho stalker to lying parents and murderous relatives, this book has it all!

I loved seeing the story develop as we are given two separate stories, from the POV of the two male leads. You would never guess how they would come to merge together and give us such a twisted ending. Then when you think it is over - leave it to the epilogue to come full circle and give us another jolt!

Great writing! Great psychological thriller in every sense! So worth your time to read!

A Twisting Web of Secrets

Reading Her Family Secret felt like being pulled into two lives heading toward the same storm. From Colin’s desperate search for answers about his wife to Owen’s haunting decline into obsession, I could feel the weight of every secret pressing down. The tension never let up, and I found myself racing through chapters to uncover the truth. What struck me most was how real the emotions felt, love, loss, betrayal, and the fear of not knowing who you can trust. By the time the final twist came, I was stunned and satisfied. From my point of view, this is one of the most gripping thrillers I’ve read all year five stars.

I will start by saying I loved this author's writing style. She had a way of making every chapter feel like a cliffhanger and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I really wasn't sure where the story was going at first and I honestly couldn't read it fast enough. That being said, I feel like the book lost something at the end and I felt a bit let down by the last 10% of the book. I did really enjoy the majority of the book, and I will definitely check out other works by this author.

First off of you have triggers around pregnancy/miscarriages this is NOT the book for you. I do not have triggers and the begging of the book was rough for me to get through. At times it wa also hard for me to keep track of what was going on until everything was brought together later in the book. There are 2 MMCs. The first is an OB who has a dark past and his wife has some secrets. The second is a man in Ireland taking care of his wife. There is a lot going in in this book and it is dark, so make sure you buckle up for the ride.

'Her Family Secrets' was an excellent choice of title. What I wasn't expecting was all the twists and turns. I'm usually good at working out a plot but not with this book.

Don't expect it to be what you think!

Poor Colin struggling with his own problems..who can he trust when no one is who he thought!

This book is full of deception in the most unexpected ways!

It was such an exciting read that I read the full book in one sitting.

Definately couldn't put it down!

This book was really good!
It had so many twists that had me gripping my sheets! I kept yelling at so many characters for their decisions, and crazy things just kept happening, at some point I had headaches because of the tension that was gripping me throughout the time I was reading. I really enjoyed the story! I had a good time reading it and the plot twists throughout the story are so unexpected that they’ll leave you speechless.

Wow, what a tangled web we weave. This is a really engaging read with no real heroes and a truly horrible villain. I was torn between 4 and 5 stars as the plot does get a bit convoluted at times for my taste, but I figure that kind of comes with the territory, and the clean, no-nonsense prose ultimately won the day. I imagine with a few more books under her belt, this author will become a must read for the genre.

A fast paced and well written book. I must confess I did nearly give up as the parallel storylines almost felt like reading two separate books.
I am glad I stuck with it as it all did come together eventually.
It's an interesting tale of deception, lies and untold horror.
The ending has a final twist and everything is finally explained fully.

Twisty, intense, and full of “wait, what?!” moments. I was hooked from the first confrontation scene where the tension is so thick you could cut it with a butter knife. Loved the layers of betrayal and the quiet strength of the main character as she pieced it all together.
