Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush #1

The Songbird and the Surveyor

Rate this book
A marriage of protection. A past full of pain. In Georgia's wild gold country, love might strike when it's least expected.

Genevieve Gillbard knows she's no longer safe in the rough-and-tumble gold rush town when she overhears her controlling guardian's plot to steal gold from a local mine owner. It takes every ounce of her courage to escape, and now she'll do anything to keep herself safe, even accept a temporary marriage of convenience from a man who clearly wants nothing more than his independence.

After losing his first wife, surveyor Jesse Holden swore never to let anyone close enough to need him again. But when he discovers the woman he knows as the Songbird of Auraria injured and unconscious in the woods, he can't abandon her, not with the memory of his failure to protect his wife hanging over him. He'll keep this woman safe until she's out of harm's way, even if it means doing the one thing he swore he'd never do again.

As Genny recovers under Jesse's care, she discovers he's nothing like the manipulative men of her past. But can she trust him with her heart—knowing he plans to leave as soon as her guardian is brought to justice? And even then, she fears the sham marriage might not be enough to keep her safe from her guardian's long reach.

There’s a meaningful, rich, quiet beauty in this story. The tenderness between the lines … the ache … the courage … the slow building of trust … it all carries a steady heartbeat. I could feel the desire and bravery for healing, for restoration, for the Lord to breathe life and purpose into their lives.

Genny and Jesse are both bruised… both longing for safety… both wanting to believe that love and goodness will find them after everything they’ve endured. Their steps are crafted with honesty and humanity… shaped by tears, shaped by faith, shaped by that deep hope that God Almighty truly redeems.

This truth wrapped itself around me as I read: “This situation seems impossible. But if we believe God is in charge, we can rest assured that He has a plan. A good plan. ‘“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” saith the Lord, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”’ That’s Jeremiah 29:11.” A needed reminder for anyone who has been wounded, overlooked, or misused … the unwavering certainty that Almighty God never forgets you, never wastes your pain, never stops holding you.

Knowing this book was written while the author was coming out of one of the hardest seasons of her life made every page feel even more meaningful. The gentleness, the protection, the slow healing, the courage to trust … all of it feels like someone writing through their own restoration while God’s powerful hand embraces them as they offer their gifts and storytelling to us.

I loved this book. Rich. Tender. Deep. Faith-soaked. A reminder that even in the roughest places, when we draw near to the Rock of Ages, He draws near to us.

For readers who love Christian historical romance that carries truth, healing, and the faithful love of a God who restores … this story is a gift.

I received a digital ARC from the author, publisher, and Celebrate Lit. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

This first book in a new series had plenty to hold and keep my attention with its intriguing storyline, marriage of convenience7, heartfelt faith and a bit of danger. I had not known of the prospecting for gold in north Georgia, which was a key element in this story that piqued my curiosity. The main characters, Genny Gillbrand and Jesse Holden, were each complex and yet endearing, given the hardships and personal troubles they had endured prior to meeting as well as the difficulties they had to overcome after. The author did a great job portraying the emotions of not only Genny and Jesse, but the villains and secondary characters also, making the story come alive and the reader part of the action. I loved the faith element in this book as it was a natural part of the story and so uplifting. The inclusion of specific Bible verses and hymns were very applicable to the main characters’ lives. Enjoyed this riveting and inspirational historical romance!

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. A positive review was not required and these are my own and honest opinions.

A chance encounter may lead to true love.

Jesse Holden is a land surveyor living in his brother-in-law’s cabin panning for gold and recovering from the recent loss of his wife. He feels enormous guilt for her death because it’s his fault she was in the situation that led to her being shot. When he finds Genevieve Gillard in the woods with a broken leg after falling from her horse, Jesse must allow her to stay in order to heal; and when he learns of her relationship to Charles Martin, the man responsible for his wife’s death, he vows to keep Genny safe.

Genny Gillard, the Songbird of Auraria, dreams of a singing career, but didn’t realize the damage singing in a saloon would do to her reputation. Her guardian Charles takes advantage of her situation, and despite being engaged himself, wants Genny for his wife/mistress. Genny doesn’t agree with this idea, and enlists the help of a trusted friend to escape. Instead she ends up injured in Jesse’s cabin after a failed escape attempt. Can she learn to trust him or any man?
Can Jesse and Genny overcome the pain of their pasts and learn to trust God again together?
I loved this book! I can’t wait for the rest of the series!

The author does such an amazing job of describing Genny’s voice that I closed my eyes after I read the first few chapters. Her voice was like a nightingale that lulls you to a sense of peace, I felt chills up and down my arms as her voice came alive. No wonder she was so popular with the customers. Many people realize that Genny needs to be rescued from a desperate situation. I loved how Genny was so sweet to everyone but knew she needed to get away before a certain someone turned her life upside down.

Jesse had my heart right away. I just loved his demeanor and how he rescued Genny from an almost tragedy. Bringing her to his cabin may be risky but he never once thought of his own safety. Maybe it was a little uncomfortable to care for her, but I knew it was no accident that God brought them together.

The story is an easy read but it sure does have spiritual lessons that readers will appreciate. We all have a past, but we are not defined by that. Genny and Jesse both have some issues they need to work through. I liked how the author surprises readers with a wedding I never expected. Will it be a marriage of convenience or will love grow into a lasting relationship?

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

This has been my favorite book by this author as the voice of Genny resonates with you and your heart is invested from the beginning. I loved the originality of the story line and the difficulty of the situation that Genny and Jesse find themselves in. God’s plan is not always our plan and sometimes what we see as a dire situation is actually a blessing in disguise. From the beautiful cover to the final page you will find yourself engrossed and turning pages quickly. Great characters and a flowing story leave you wanting more. This is the first book in the Twenty- Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush series and I look forward to more.

This is a book about learning to trust, not only in what God has planned but also in yourself. When Jesse first met Genny he was taken with her but he had other plans to abide by. Later he finds himself saving her and in the end they save each other.

There are surprises and sadness throughout as well as hope and growth for both Jesse and Genny. I enjoyed their journey to their happily ever after.

“God is our true north, Genny. Long as we keep our bearing on Him, we can’t go astray.”

We’ve all heard of the “fortyniners,” but this new series by Denise Farnsworth ( formerly Weimer) begins to tell the tale of the Georgia “twenty-niners.” The Songbird and the Surveyor starts with a chance rescue of a young, beautiful singer whose opportunistic guardian forces her to sing in a tavern in the booming Georgia mining town of Auraria. Drunk, uncouth miners get out of hand and Jesse, a young, engaged surveyor steps up when Genny’s own guardian doesn't.

Fast forward a few years. Genny is beginning to realize that Charles, her guardian, may not have her best interest at heart as she overhears rumors of him leaving to marry another-while controlling her through emotional manipulations and expectations. Jesse himself has married his fiancée, Emma, sister of his best friend, Wade. Miserable in the marriage, working as an accountant and living in town when his heart belongs to the wide open areas, he escapes to Mississippi and the surveying world he left upon his marriage. Then tragedy strikes, and he returns back to Georgia.

Both prisoners of their pasts, can Ginny and Jesse find their way to safety and freedom in an arranged marriage? Or will they discover that their efforts to protect their hearts act like porcupine quills to the other’s and find God has a plan for them- if they listen?

I appreciated the history of the Geogia 29ers. It was a new subject for me. I also appreciated Farnsworth pointing out several times how the Cherokees were forced from their land, first promised recompense below value, then forcibly removed, though this is not the focus of the story. I do wonder if somewhere in the series we will see a Cherokee descendant as a main character, though.

Themes of trust, betrayal, faith, God’s unconditional love, loyalty, hypocrisy, and greed run throughout the book. When will Jesse stop running from his pain and stay to confront those things or people that cause it?

“She was a commodity, just as her father had said. Her mind, her spirit, her will were of no consequence.” Will Ginny be able to see herself as valuable in God’s eyes, when almost no one in society deems her worthy? Who can she trust?

I enjoyed this historical romance about the Georgia twenty-niners. I recommend this book for those who love history, those looking for lesser known history, and those who wonder about their own purpose and self-worth.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

“She needed more than promises from him in order to trust him.” - ( Ginny)

“‘You almost make me believe it’s possible.’ ‘What’s possible?’ She had to whisper it, her throat had gone so dry at his nearness. ‘Love.’”

“How could he think of the future until he’d dealt with the demons of his past?”

“‘…do you reckon God knows what He’s doing?’ ‘Um, well…yes.’ Genny hid her uncertainty behind a hesitant sip of tea. “‘Seems to me, He’s put you right where you need to be.’” - Mrs. Paschal, Genny

A marriage of convenience or a marriage of protection? That is how Genny's and Jesse's marriage first start out. I found it interesting that two people who were trying so hard to hold onto their individual freedom, and this was a friction between them, would grow to rely on one another and eventually find love.

There was a bit of a dilemma tied up around singer Genny and her guardian. A guardian that had evil ambitions for himself and her. Not only that, but he had many secrets that he kept from her, and as she found them out knew she could only run from him. But as she ran for her freedom, she runs straight into the arms of Jesse Holden. A man that craves freedom more than she does.

This was an adventurous and danger filled romance that was quite good. Marriage of convenience stories are still my favorite, and I very much enjoy watching this couple fall in love in their forced proximity. I also liked how even though both had little faith, the seeds that were planted in their lives did flourish. Jesse needed a second chance and Genny needed a new start.

I also found the mining for gold in Georgia interesting. I had to check back to see where the story was taking place as I thought it was Georgia, but then I thought we skipped to California. Nope, it was gold mining in Georgia, the land being taken away from the Cherokee and men winning lotteries to settle and mine for gold. This was something new to me, a bit of history I learned.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

The Songbird and the Surveyor by author Denise Weimer, is a Christian adventure historical novel that caught my interest immediately. Within the first few pages I was invested in the characters and their stories that beautifully meshed into one tale. This became a glorious page turning delight.

Set in Georgia, this is a tale about gold prospecting, unscrupulous people, marriage of convenience, and trusting God. The characters are masterfully crafted. Each one is unique and lovable, relatable, or despicable. Do you enjoy folk or home remedies? Me, too! There are some in this story. For me, that makes it more interesting.

The author has an inviting style of writing. Her pace is even and doesn’t lag. It glides along and smoothly lets the story progress. There are a few twists and turns to make things a touch more exciting.

I enjoyed the hymns and scripture that were included in the novel. They brought the Christian message to life in the story. It was inspiring to watch the spiritual growth of the characters. Genny Gillbrand and Jesse Holden have each had past issues. They have faced prejudice, unfair treatment, and guilt, but God has been with them throughout it all.

I highly recommend this captivating historical, romance, adventure, marriage of convenience book. It would be a nice book club selection. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. A complimentary copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

The Songbird and the Surveyor oozes with personality and authenticity, with a strong writer’s voice that is so easy to sink into. I love the tender and raw storytelling, and how personal the characters feel.

I’m not a huge fan of marriage of convenience stories. However, this one sucked me in, put me through all the feels, and has changed my mind a bit. Genny and Jesse are complex characters, and their journeys of healing are peppered with both sadness and hope. I especially appreciate how the story offers a foundation of faith and shows that God was there with them through their struggles.

The romance, mystery, and suspense give this relatively quick read a lot of depth, and the element of faith ties everything together with a satisfying sigh.

First Line: Gold Diggers Road that ran through the boom town of Auraria, Georgia, beckoned many toward their dreams, but Jesse Holden was fated to follow it out of town and keep right on going until he ran out of freedom.

The Songbird and the Surveyor is a wonderful marriage of convenience historical fiction novel that you’re going to love reading! Genny and Jesse. Jesse never planned on getting married again. He doesn’t want that responsibility, and he doesn’t want to risk that again. Losing someone you love is hard.

Genny knows she has to leave when danger is coming for her home. Her guardian is planning some nefarious activities, and she overhears. So she runs off. Only it doesn’t go how she planned. Did she even have a plan?

A marriage of convenience is all that will save her. Jesse does what he’s vowed never to do and marries her to keep her safe.

This was such a sweet book with wonderful characters. They really came to me and made me want to keep reading and figure out what was going to happen. Wonderful novel that you must read! This is a great author and all of her works are filled with faith and the word of God.

Christian Historical Romance is a genre that I truly enjoy. The Songbird and the Surveyor by Denise Farnsworth is the latest book that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush series.

WOW, this book captured my attention as soon as I began reading it. The 2 main characters of the book are Genevieve Gillbard and Jesse Holden. Genny is a wonderful singer and she has a Beautiful voice. She is put in a predicament and she her safety is being threatened in the Mining town where she lives. She wants to seek safe ground, but is at a lost to how to find that. Jesse is a surveyor and is still mourning the loss of his wife. Jesse discovers Genny unconscious in the woods and knows he must take care of her. He is helping her recover and Genny is grateful for the care and attention that he gives her. Jesse and Genny decide on a "marriage of convenience might be a solution to keep Genny safe. Genny and Jesse both have some "baggage", yet they are willing to work through those issues. I really LOVE how they grow their relationship and begin to feel a "real love". The book is one Faith, Hope, Trust and God's plan is greater then our own plan. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. GREAT BOOK!

One thing I really admire in a character is resilience and both the main characters had that. Their past lives had not been easy, but they kept persevering and didn't give up although they also didn't really think themselves worthy of love either. They were both broken, especially by people who were supposed to show them love & care. The more I read historical fiction, the more I am glad I didn't live in those days! They were so difficult! This author did extensive research to get her facts correct and it showed in this book. I enjoyed it immensely. Genny and Jesse were flawed people but very relatable and I was rooting for them the entire book. Their marriage of convenience just had to become real! Jesse had not loved his first wife but when she died, he still felt responsible for her death because he wasn't there for her. Genny had been duped by her "ward" so many times, but she was naive and believed his lies. I really liked the backdrop of the Gold Rush in Georgia at this time period because I didn't know anything about it. Gold always seems to bring out the villains! I also enjoyed all the secondary characters that moved this story along and enriched it.

The Songbird and the Surveyor is the first book in the Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush written by Denise Farnsworth (writing as Denise Weimer). This is an inspiration Christian romance that is well written and easy to read and imagine. Genny has been under the care of her guarding since her father's death. When she finds out her life will not be as he led her to believe, she flees and gets injured in the process. Jesse finds her and takes her into his home and cares for her while she heals.

This is a nice book that is filled with nice caring characters. I like how quick Jesse is to accept the situation and does what he needs to for Genny's protection. Not only does he care for her and think of her safety first, but he is also helping his lawman friend. I appreciate the change that comes over Jesse's mother after Genny is abducted. I also appreciate reading the history behind Jesse and his late wife. This story not only contains nice clean romance, but it also contains mystery and suspense.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

This is the first book in a new series, Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush, by Denise Farnsworth, previously published under Denise Weimer. Since I am a Californian, and very familiar with the California Gold Rush in 1949, it was very interesting to read about the Georgia Gold Rush twenty years earlier. The author has done extensive research, so the story is based on what really happened.

There are good characters I came to cheer for, and too many other villains I hissed at. The main couple are both broken people who need healing, and the spiritual insights in the book are very well done. Watching their marriage of convenience change into true love was quite challenging because the plot is complicated. There’s a lot of betrayal, quick decisions that are mistakes, hurt and heartache, but also hope and healing. I look forward to reading more in this series.

This first book in the Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush is sure to keep you wondering why things happen the way they do. Genny, feeling deserted by her father, finds it very hard to trust anyone, especially a man. After all, her so-called guardian, Charles, takes advantage of her and her beautiful singing, using her to build his empire without any care for her dreams. Jesse is a talented surveyor whose expertise is requested by those looking to settle this great land. But what of his dreams for a family and a home - not important to those who want his experience.

A marriage of convenience brings a whole added level to Genny’s inability to trust anyone. Will these two come to learn that sometimes God’s intervention is better than anything they could imagine? An early copy was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

The Songbird and the Surveyor by Denise Farnsworth, writing as Denise Weimer, is a Christian Historical Romance. It is the story of Genevieve Gillbard and surveyor Jesse Holden. The author does an excellent job building characters and storylines that kept my interest. It is the first book in the Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush series.

This story explores themes of caring for someone and learning to trust again. The book takes twists and turns that include sadness and unexpected events, but also demonstrate the road to learning to trust again. As soon as I began reading, I found myself caught up in the story and unwilling to put it down.

So if you want a Christian historical romance, check out The Songbird and the Surveyor by Denise Farnsworth, writing as Denise Weimer.

I enjoyed learning about the Georgia gold rush in this book. As much as I love American history, I actually knew next to nothing about it going into this read. Genny and Jesse’s story is a sweet tale of learning to trust and how it can bring healing. I absolutely love marriage of convenience stories and this is a really good one! It starts out as nothing but a form of protection… but Jesse’s careful and respectful treatment is so foreign to Genny, she can’t help opening her heart. I loved Jesse’s journey in this story. It was also so beautiful to see Genny learn what relationships are supposed to look like.

Definitely recommended for anyone who loves historical romance and marriage of convenience stories! Between the interesting history and the romance, I was hooked!

This story was such a delightful read, and I'm struggling to find the words to describe the beauty of it all. The Songbird and the Surveyor by Denise Farnsworth is a marriage of convenience story with thrilling elements of suspense interwoven throughout this touching tale. Both Genny and Jesse have had their share of heart-ache, but when their paths cross, they must decide if just getting by is enough, or if they are willing to risk forging a new path. I loved reading this one. This is a complex and multi-layered story, but simple to read. It's immersive and wraps around the reader like a warm hug, drawing them in as the story unfold. I love that, and am so glad I got the opportunity to read The Songbird and the Surveyor!

Jesse’s and Genny’s paths collide under dire circumstances and their lives tangle in ways they didn’t imagine. Genny only wants freedom to live her life and be accepted for who she is; can anyone truly love her? Jesse shoulders guilt and feelings of inadequacy; can he ever find true love?

Their journey is fraught up with bad guys, danger, betrayal, fear, and doubts. They are not enemies yet not really friends. When their feelings do warm and begin to grow, will they only be crushed again? As they meet the dangers head-on, they find God is there making a way through the impossible. There is a sweet HEA.

I enjoyed the story. I received a complimentary copy from the author and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

The Songbird and the Surveyor (Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush Book 1) by Denise Weimer is a remarkable story of learning to trust where God leads. Genevieve Gillbard knows trouble is coming so she must separate herself from her unscrupulous guardian. Foun unconscious by surveyor Jesse Holden, she is unsure of her safety now. But God, what wonderful words, knows what each of these individuals need. A marriage of convenience is arranged but will it be over when Genevieve is out of harms way.

An exciting start to this new series with two wary characters who need God’s guidance, grace and mercy. As they trust in the Lord, their trust is built in each other and themselves. A story that focuses on relationships and character growth during difficult times.

The Songbird and the Surveyor is the story of two people who have survived tragedy and don't feel worthy of love. Jesse is a surveyor, a widower and the son of a mother who disapproves of his career and most things he does. Genny has a wonderful voice but poor self-esteem after her parents have both died and she is left in the care of a wicked man. Genny ends up in Jesse's care after she breaks her leg near his cabin. Jesse's father is a minister who raised Jesse to follow God and he is able to minister to Genny. I enjoyed this first book in the Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush. I did not know there was a Georgia Gold Rush! I recommend The Songbird and the Surveyor to others. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Not what I expected but so much more. Lots of depth to Jessie and Genny. She's running for her life; he is determined to help her. Intertwined with his best friend Wade and wanting justice for the killing of his first wife who was Wade's sister, an intricate story unfolds full of raw emotion, faith and a growing romance. Quite an excellent read to get lost in.

I thought this was a good story. I liked how it was about a time that I didn’t know anything about. I didn’t know that there was a gold rush in Georgia so I thought that was interesting to learn and to see how similar things were with this gold rush and the gold rushes that happened farther west. I also liked the romance in this story. I liked how it went from a marriage of convenience to one of true love. I loved how Jesse and Genny grew in their faith and trust in both God and each other. I also thought this story was well written with great characters. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
