“Kindness is always in fashion.”
-A hopeful PROPOSAL, is such a delightful and witty regency romance. It’s the endearing and relatable characters within this story that captivated my attention and had my heart. I was drawn to the sparks of chemistry, and the many ways they help heal each other’s hearts. The love that grows along the journey blossoms with unity and belonging was tender. Watching characters rise above past abandonment, rejection, disappointment, and doubts was so beautiful! I loved seeing how love, true love, without any strings attached, makes such a great difference and impacts characters for the better, which allows hearts to open and peace to be filled into the cracks! This is a tender complicated puzzle of a story, yet watching the intricate pieces to the dear story get put together leads to such a dear perfection complete picture! Oh what beauty is created with getting each piece in just the right place with tender care and trust. This my friends, is a dear story worth reading!🙌🏻📚🩷
“Love sets one free.”
•Content: feelings of past abandonment, gambling/debt, birth defect, rejection, mentions of loss of loved ones but nothing graphic, grief, no language, only kisses.
“We all have scars. Not all of them are on our skin for everyone to see. And your scar is nothing to be ashamed of.”
“If there aren’t enough seats at a table, we can always fetch another chair.” -I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“Even the world faded away. The only things that remained were a man and a woman who loved. And were loved.“
I love a book that has a very straightforward Heroine and Hero. This one was delightful and witty. Lady Sarah Denham was very refreshing. I loved her personality and her ability to see people and their struggles, insecurities and needs. She was charming and loving, and she showed those around her how to be the same.
Christopher Moulton is one lucky man! He makes a bargain that is completely not what he was expecting in his life. And that bargain turns out to be his greatest blessing and joy! And not only that but these two create a beautiful friendship where they learn they can trust each other with their heartaches and sorrows and that they can heal and find peace and love. Their love story is so sweet, tender and perfection! I honestly was grinning the whole time I read this one. It truly made my heart so happy!
The quick wit and openness of these two had me giggling and cheering for them to find healing from their pasts. It was beautiful how that all played out. This is definitely a book that I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! And it is one that I highly recommend for regency fans, happy book fans, and fans of Samantha Hastings's writing! I loved every moment of it!
Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses but nothing further. Talk of loss of loved ones but nothing graphic.
I received a copy from the author and publisher, Covenant Communications. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
A Hopeful Proposal is a love story like no other. It’s rare for a woman to propose, especially during the elegant Regency Era. Lady Sarah Denham has spent years mourning her mother, who vanished seven years ago. Deep inside, she believes she must stay in her family home, waiting for her mother’s return. Then, life throws a curveball and her home is suddenly sold right out from under her, forcing her to move. The new owner, Christopher Moulton, is "nouveau riche" and purchases the house for himself and his two younger sisters, who need help fitting into society. Things take an interesting turn when Lady Sarah offers Chris a "marriage of convenience," a plan designed to benefit them both.
This is where the fun begins, as these two strangers start to get to know each other while living as newlyweds. Both Chris and Sarah are very likable characters with many good qualities. Even though they've both faced tough times, I admired their strength and determination to keep doing their best. They complement each other well, despite coming from different backgrounds. Their witty conversations are delightful and will make you smile and laugh throughout the pages.
Sarah has this amazing gift of bringing out the best in everyone she meets. She does this for Chris, who needs a boost of confidence in his new role, and for his sisters, the shy Margaret and the lively Deborah. I also absolutely adored Lady Sarah's special bond with her Lady's Maid, Nelly, who she grew up with. Sarah never lets her status make her feel superior; she treats everyone with the same kindness and respect. That's why she'll always be one of my favorite female Regency characters.
As Sarah and Chris face their past struggles, they find love and hope. They help each other heal and grow stronger together. It's truly heartwarming to see them both finally find peace. This charming and enjoyable romance swept me away. It’s an inspiring love story that's definitely worth reading!
This is a beautiful story of my favorite trope… marriage of convenience! Oh my goodness, I loved it so much! I loved the characters so thoroughly! I feel like the main characters complimented each other and the side characters only enhanced the story… never taking anything away! That is huge for me! I honestly loved it! Grab it! You will not regret it!
Thank you to the author for a copy of the book, all thoughts and opinions are my own!
I also listened on Bookshelf! Noah Wall hit it out of the park!
If you are looking for a marriage of convenience story, with cozy feels and sweet kisses... this is the one for you!
Sarah’s mother left the estate years ago, and Sarah still holds onto hope that she’ll return. But when the estate is sold, Sarah fears that if she leaves, she’ll miss her mother's return. Her solution? Propose to the new owner, a complete stranger!
Christopher needs a wife to help him gain acceptance in society and to help raise his younger sisters. Sarah wants to stay on the estate, just in case her mother comes back. So begins a marriage of convenience, full of slow-burn romance, a new family finding their way, and a hint of mystery surrounding Sarah’s missing mother.
I really enjoyed the sweet, calm vibe of this story. It captures the quiet moments of love growing and a new family bonding. I did feel like I wanted a little more tension in the story ... since most of the story is just day-to-day life. That said it was perfect for a cozy, quiet read. And was still a wonderful story....the chemistry between Sarah and Christopher was wonderful to watch, and the kisses were amazing!
This was a very unusual book and I loved it. Sarah was fantastic and Chris was so endearing. I struggled a little with liking Christopher’s youngest sister but by the end I was feeling better about her and she did add an interesting twist to the plot. This was a good book and very worth the read.
Lady Sarah Denham is such an invigorating character. Not only is she charming and lovely, she’s very straightforward and resourceful. She deals with life matter-of-factly and exemplifies those traits to those around her.
An impromptu proposal to the new owner of her home, Christopher, delivers a delightful marriage of convenience with so many heartfelt scenes, growth, and beautiful moments. I loved the entire cast of characters and feel this story is one of this author’s best.
I enjoyed the way this story played out and loved the tender messages given within these pages. The romance is believable and inspiring, overcoming all types of obstacles.
Content: mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given*
Lady Sarah was a refreshingly strong character who knew what she wanted and went after it. She and Christopher’s love story though not traditional was highly entertaining. The characters were well developed and made for a fun read.
This novel truly captivated me! The protagonist's cheeky interactions with him are delightful. They are such a perfect match, bursting with chemistry. The characters are incredibly relatable, making them feel like close friends. The side characters add a wonderful touch, too! I found the author’s notes and discussion questions insightful; they would spark great conversations. This book is an excellent choice for any book club! I received a complimentary e-copy of this book and read it with pleasure. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review. Thank you, Covenant Communications.
“A wise man knows when to let himself be caught by a beautiful woman,” Christopher said, winking at her. Swoony, “Her skin was softer than the petals of a rose, and she smelled sweeter too.”🥰
Her aunt said, “Is it a good marriage, Sarah?” Glancing over her shoulder, Sarah looked at Christopher standing with one arm around each of his sister’s shoulders. Her heart felt full. She had a family of her own. “The best marriage.” “Excellent. I always liked his broad shoulders and his wealth.😱😂
1 Peter 4:8 we learn, ‘And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.’ Charity is the purest love of God. If we replace the word charity with love in this verse, it gives us additional insight to the meaning: ‘And above all things have fervent love among yourselves: for love shall cover the multitude of sins.’” Love covers a multitude of sins. 💗
This was such an enjoyable read—quickly captivating, humorous, and full of delightful surprises. Lady Sarah Denham clings to hope still awaiting the return of her long-lost mother, who vanished years ago, refuses to leave their ancestral home, Manderfield Estate, lest her mother come back and find her gone.
But her fragile world is upended once more when her neglectful father sells the estate—along with the cherished portrait of her mother. On the verge of leaving, standing beside the carriage, Lady Sarah impulsively inquires whether the new owner is married. It’s a small question with massive consequences.
The new owner, Christopher Moulton, a self-made man who has built upon the modest business left by his late father, is not titled but carries the weight of responsibility. With two younger sisters in his care and his father’s wishes still shaping his choices, he’s not expecting a proposal—especially not from Lady Sarah herself. She wants to preserve her home and legacy; he sees a chance for social advancement through marriage which he needs to secure matches for his sisters. What begins as a practical arrangement slowly blossoms into a tender, complicated love story.
One of the novel's greatest strengths lies in its supporting characters. Each is memorable, bringing depth and texture to the story. Deborah, one of Christopher's sisters, is spoiled, prone to dramatic fits. Lady Sarah, haunted by her own mother's disappearance, fears history may be repeating itself. This tantrum of Deborahs possibly offers long-awaited insight into the fate of the Countess of Manders.
The reaction of Lady Sarah’s father during the discovery is particularly striking. His cold priorities and self-serving choices truly take one aback.
I especially loved the hero’s depth: a rugged, broad-shouldered man shaped by physical labor and haunted by the pain and rejection by his father due to a birth defect. His vulnerability and disbelief that a beautiful, noblewoman like Lady Sarah could truly love him were touching and added authenticity to the romance.
Together, they help each other heal—Sarah from abandonment and disappointment, and he from years of quiet rejection and self-doubt. Their love isn’t just a solution to their problems—it’s a journey toward becoming family.
I absolutely adored A Hopeful Proposal! It’s one of my new favorites from Samantha Hastings. This delightful marriage of convenience romance pulled me in from the beginning & had me quickly turning the pages. I loved Sarah & Chris & their unconventional start to a heartfelt, lovely marriage. Filled with romance, endearing characters, challenging family members, & a touch of mystery, this story is an absolute must read for cozy Regency romance fans.
Lady Sarah Denham’s life is shattered when her father sells the only home she’s ever known, Manderfield Hall. After her mother’s disappearance, it’s the place she hoped her mother might return to someday, & she’s loathe to leave it. So, she hatches an impulsive plan to propose marriage to the new owner especially when she first meets the handsome, self-made man.
Christopher Moulton worked hard building his fortune as a business man, starting out as a canal worker & working his way up. When Lady Sarah offers him an outrageous proposal, he sees the wisdom in it. His one desire in purchasing the hall is to introduce his sisters into Society & provide advantageous marriages for them. With Lady Sarah’s proposal, they’ll have the benefit of her name, expertise, & connections. But can he ever hope the attractive Lady Sarah will love him?
I absolutely loved Sarah! She’s such a positive, genuinely lovely character. I enjoyed how she frequently makes lemonade out of lemons & teaches Chris’ younger sisters how to truly be ladies. They definitely pose a challenge, especially the headstrong Deb. But, Sarah’s definitely up for it, & I loved her innate kindness & her talent for turning old dresses into masterpieces.
Chris is a swoony, thoughtful hero if a little rough around the edges. I loved how he was so considerate of Sarah & tried to do everything to make her life better. Because of his scars, he can be a little gruff & shy. I loved how Sarah gave him more confidence & helped him make friends & navigate society.
It’s such an endearing story of found family, overcoming the past, & real love. Loved the ending & am hoping for Margaret’s & Deb’s stories in the future. I received an advanced copy from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.
Is this my new favorite of Samantha’s books..?? It just might be!!
“This. This was what love was supposed to be like. The poets spoke of passion, but a grand love was made up of small, precious moments like this one.”
This story had me smiling so much my cheeks hurt! A charming and banter filled story with two main characters that are so relatable!! The way Sarah and Christopher help each other heal the pain of their past and open their hearts to love is endearing! Christopher easily became a favorite MMC. I have many favorite moments of this story- but the swimming scene 🫠🔥😍
The side characters in this story are so fun, and I felt played a large role in the story!! Aunt Venetia and Ralph’s teasing made me laugh so much! Nelly, the sisters, the uncle, I loved them all ♥️
“We all have scars, Christopher. Not all of them are on our skin for everyone to see. And your scar is nothing to be ashamed of.”
The confident and determined Lady Sarah is about to lose the last thing she has to keep close to her mother, her family home. She makes a rash decision, and proposes to the new owner of Manderfield Hall…she doesn’t know what she will do if she has to leave her family estate forever…
Christopher Moulton has made his fortunate as a canal man and purchased an estate to help his sisters gain entrance into upper society. He has no desire to marry well, if at all, when upon his first day at his new estate he is knocked off his feet when a complete stranger, a Lady of all people, proposes a marriage of convenience they both will benefit from.
“I did not mean any disrespect, Lady Sarah,” he said quickly. “A handshake is commonplace after an agreement in business.” “I should have thought a kiss would be more commonplace in this situation,” she said with a saucy wink.
Oh my heart, how I love this book! It's my favorite Regency from Samantha Hastings! Lady Sarah Denham has been waiting seven years for her mother to return to their home, Manderfield Hall, since her mysterious disappearance. When the estate is sold, she's devastated and unexpectedly proposes a marriage of convenience to the new owner, Christopher Moulton, so she can stay. It’s a bold idea (ladies did not propose to men!), and unsurprisingly, it doesn’t quite go as she planned.
Christopher is a businessman, not a titled gentleman. He's a little rough around the edges and has little patience for aristocratic traditions, but he sees that marrying Sarah would help secure good matches for the two younger sisters he’s responsible for. So they tie the knot, even though they hardly know each other.
The interaction between Sarah and Christopher is the heart of the story. I loved how they considered each other. One example is how Sarah so thoughtfully prepared Manderfield Hall for the new owners before she left—making sure everything was perfect and putting fresh flowers from the garden in the rooms. I loved how she treated Christopher's sisters and truly wanted to teach all of them what they needed to know to move in Society's circles. Sarah has the kindest heart and I think that's what made me love her character so much. I loved that the story didn't have them rushing into romance, but let them build a foundation of trust, respect, and understanding.
If you love slow-burn historical romances with heart, strong but relatable characters, and a story about finding healing and love when you least expect it, I highly recommend A Hopeful Proposal. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and bought an ebook for my personal library. All opinions in this review are my own.

MY TAKE What a charming and swoony story! Sarah and Chris are great people who had father issues but were well loved by their mothers. And thank goodness for their moms! It's easy to become brutal yourself when you have a brutal parent. But both of them patterned their attitudes and behaviors after their moms.
It was fun that Sarah took the initiative and proposed to Chris. And I thoroughly enjoyed how they got to know each other (and fall in love), and how first Sarah and then Chris figured out how to best help his two younger sisters. I hope this is the beginning of a series because I would love to read more about these people, including Sarah's cousin.
I adored everything about A Hopeful Proposal by Samantha Hastings. From the marriage of convenience trope to the Regency setting to the fabulous FMC and MMC, I loved it all. It was a sweet romance with so much heart.
When Lady Sarah Denham’s father sells her home, her heart is broken because she fears her missing mother will finally return and she will not be there to greet her. Sarah decides to propose marriage to the new owner of Manderfield Hall, Christopher Moulton. She feels this is the perfect solution to both their problems because she needs to be at her home and Christopher needs help marrying off his sisters. The story that follows is full of friendship, hope, acceptance, family, and love.
Sarah was so elegant and so kind. She was a real lady. I loved all the references to the lessons Sarah’s mom taught her about beauty, friendship, and how to treat others. Sarah’s approach to life, especially her marriage, was so beautiful. I adored Sarah, and I loved how her relationship with Christopher developed.
Christopher was rough and working class and a bit socially awkward. His first interactions with Sarah were so funny as he tried to figure out how to act like a gentleman. I loved how he was drawn to Sarah from the beginning. It was so fun to watch him slowly fall for his wife.
Sarah and Christopher’s relationship was my favorite part of the story. I loved how accepting they were of each other and how well they communicated with each other. Their romance is slow burn but so worth the wait. The small swoony touches were beautifully written and perfect for the story.
I loved this book. I will be reading it again soon. It is so good.
Samantha Hastings never disappoints! A Hopeful Proposal pulled me in immediately and was so engrossing I totally lost track of time!
I loved all the characters. Lady Sarah is just the kindest, classiest sort of person, and I’d love to be friends with her. She’s considerate of others around her and uses her privilege for good. Christopher loves his sisters and is working to give them the very best, and is a hard worker and savvy businessman. I love how their marriage of convenience pulls together these people from very different spheres and shows how they each use their strengths to build each other up. I love seeing a positive, healthy relationship written in the romance novels I read! Deborah and Margaret are written so true to their ages; both read as the teenage girls they are, learning how to live in their sphere and who exactly they are (Deborah gave me Lydia from Pride and Prejudice vibes, but with better family support!). Sarah’s eccentric aunt and uncle were excellent side characters as well!
Overall the tone of the book is light, save for the portions discussing Sarah’s mother’s disappearance and the deaths of Christopher’s mother and younger brothers, which are treated with the appropriate gravity.
A Hopeful Proposal is a standalone, just kisses regency romance.
Thank you to the author for the ARC! All opinions are my own.
I was thoroughly swept away. What a delightful and tender story.
Sarah is one of my favorite FMCs with her welcoming heart and sweet disposition. Though she’s experienced so much heartbreak, she’s still hopeful for the best.
Christopher is such an unassuming hero. He’s scarred, both physically and emotionally, never imagining any woman would want him. He’s just trying to do right by his sisters as their guardian.
Sarah and Christopher each have different reasons for their marriage of convenience. I loved how they treated one another, how they interacted with Margaret and Deborah and how they encouraged and comforted each other through their different heartbreaks. Finding a love that surprised and surpassed all hopes, not just with each other, but as a family as well.
“For the first time in years, she'd felt whole. Since her mother's disappearance, Sarah had felt something was missing inside of her, as if she were a puzzle that was put together but lacked the final two pieces. Or, rather, three pieces: Christopher, Margaret, and Deborah. She'd needed a family of her own to love and to care for.”
Filled with witty banter, sweet connections, tender love, a bit of mystery, and a beautiful message. Truly a dream read!
Thank you to Samantha Hastings and Covenant Communications for the copy. All opinions are my own.
This book is all about healing the past through love and hope. It is about finding the good in people around you. I love how the main character sees people as good and needing a chance. Sarah and Christopher may be from different stations in life, but they make a beautiful match.
Here are some things I loved about this book:
- Sarah's friendship with her maid -She proposes -Swimming in the lake... -Hide and Seek - Sarah's Generosity and kindness -The Aunt's obsession with wedding cake - Healing through love and hope - The lessons from her mom -Her ability and love of repurposing dresses
Here are some quotes I loved:
"Her mother had taught her that although women did not always have control over their lives, they could carve for themselves little 'pockets of power.'"
"'You would sell your soul for a house?' Ralph said. Manderfield Hall held her heart and soul."
"'I seem to have lost you,' Sarah said, watching him closely. 'Have you fallen into a memory? Can you take me with you?'"
“A wise man knows when to let himself be caught by a beautiful woman.”
A Hopeful Proposal was such a cute and unique Regency romance. I loved how fresh everything about this story was and how easy it was to love both the main and secondary characters. After having been left to her own devices by her father, Lady Sarah proposes to Christopher, a total stranger, when he purchases her beloved family estate. Deciding a marriage to a Lady would help Chris’s sisters, he takes her up on the offer. I loved the way the two grew to know one another and help each other and the way that then turned into romance. The story had a little bit of mystery too that kept me turning the pages too. It was so unique, I really enjoyed it. Read this for, *she proposes to him *marriage of convenience *dual POV romance *found family *bit of mystery *Regency era *opposites attract *close proximity *happy ever after I am really glad I read this book and highly recommend it.
What a perfectly lovely book! Despite hitting on difficult topics such as the death of family members, parental rejection and abandonment, and class prejudices, this is the ultimate feel-good story. It’s a book about healing, acceptance, family, and love. I had a smile on my face for most of the book, and throughly enjoyed reading it.
Both MCs are wonderful. Sarah is such a kind, empathetic, and perceptive character. She borderline unrealistic in her perfection, but impossible not to love. The relationship development is also great, between the MCs, of course, but also between Sarah and her sisters-in-law.
Highly recommended to those looking for a feel-good regency romance.
Content: There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. Despite a few mentions, there is no real message of faith or God.
Trigger warnings - death of family members, parental rejection and abandonment
A charming and beautiful read. The storyline is simple and yet compelling at the same time. Lady Sarah has been informed that her beloved family home has been sold to pay for her father’s gambling debts. He has already gambled her dowery away, which lead to her Mothers disappearance. She can’t stand the thought of losing her home. So without further thought, she does the unthinkable. Christopher has overcome many obstacles, he has made a name for himself and a great fortune. But his highest concern now is to protect and provide for his two sisters. This a is a simple marriage of convenience. I loved watching their relationship grow and develop. Their love of others is infectious and their wisdom intriguing. There is a mystery to solve and relationships to mend. Beautiful regency era, clean and wholesome story.
Firstly, this cover is so elegant and beautiful! Romantic, sweet, heartwarming, with beautiful storytelling and world-building, “A Hopeful Proposal” is a marriage of convenience to something much more novel that I did not want to put down! Sarah and Christopher’s love story truly has so much heart throughout. Both have such hearts of gold, and they help one another to grow, to trust, to heal, and the way they respect and care for one another is absolutely beautiful. Exploring themes of loss, fear, found family, hope, and so much more, this amazing novel truly has so much in it. Thank you so much to Covenant Communications and Samanatha Hastings for the e-ARC of this incredible book, and thank you so much to Samantha Hastings for having me on her Launch Team for this novel! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
"A lady is only as beautiful as she believes herself to be." pg 84
Such a delightful book! This is a marriage of convenience trope done right. We first believe that Sarah proposes (yes, she is the one to propose) to Christopher to keep her house. However, we later find that it is more than just the house, but is tied to her missing mother. Both characters are fighting past hurts and are able to come together and build a relationship that moves beyond convenience to a happily ever after.
Hastings is able to create characters that you fall in love with. This story also helps us remember that while some family relationships and blood related and can be strenuous, other family relationships are formed with those around us and can be exactly what we've been looking for and needed.
A sweet regency era story. Sarah and Chris are both wonderful characters. With a friendship they didn't expect. And a sweet love story. They both need each other and as Sarah finds her beloved home being sold. Chris needs to find a safe place for his sisters. Little did they both know that they would need each other more than expected
Sarah comes with a plan to stay in her home for hopeful reasons. That is make a marriage of convinience. And Chris agrees because it secures good standing gentleman for his sisters. A witty loveable story. I enjoyed it.
I received a e-ARC from the author publisher. All stated here are my own. No positive thoughts and comments where requested.
I love all of Samantha's books, but this one especially made me smile to read. I love how her romance books don't follow the same pattern of most every other historical romance. Her books have a different pacing & it keeps me more in suspense about where the story will go next. I totally recommend this book for all to read!
I loved the plot line, the writing style, and the narration. Due to the short length of the book, there wasn't much depth to the characters or plot line. Sarah and Christopher's relationship was too easy, and it felt like they fell in love so quickly. Because this book is better than most LDS romances I've read, I decided to round up.
3.5 stars. A fluffy and fun read, but very much on the cheesy side. I had a hard time loving Sarah, the main character, because she had no flaws. There was a lack of character depth, in general, in this book. It had some interesting historical elements scattered within but also embellished unrealistic scenarios for the time as well.
The best part of this book was the Author’s Note. Genuinely. I enjoyed the brief history notes given there that had played a role in the story. The story itself was fiiiiinne. Lighthearted, cheesy, predictable, cute, and without much depth of plot. Characters were unrealistic and there were a few inconsistencies in backgrounds and behaviors.
I love a good marriage of convenience book, and this one had the bonus of a mystery. Sarah is a plucky heroine who takes her life into her own hands after being treated very badly by her father. I enjoyed the characters and seeing how the heroine handled her problems.
