Peace, war, internal strife; You Miao has lived through it all—but not without his loyal Quanrong slave-turned-husband, Li Zhifeng. Theirs is a story of undying devotion that combats racial boundaries in a time when the ethnic tribes of the north clashed with the Han empire. Together, they ruled the world! (Behind the scenes, of course.)

If Fei Tian's novels were available when I was in HS, I would have loved learning history this way. After finishing this volume, I immediately did a deep dive on the Song Dynasty which is divided into two reigns. This book (loosely) takes place at the end of the Northern Song reign and the beginning of the Southern Song reign after being defeated and driven south by the Tartars. After knowing how the Song Dynasty falls 😬- I’m so curious what direction Fei Tian takes this with You Miao being a Han and Li Zhifeng being from a “barbarian” nomadic tribe.

I hope more people decide to read this series because it really deserves more love.

🫖Loving and committed CP
🫖Palace/court intrigue
🫖History (but not overwheming)
🫖Politics (but not complicated like QJJ)
🫖War (but not a large part of the story)
🫖🌶️🌶️🌶️ (Fei Tian never disappoints here)

One of my favorite things about Fei Tian’s protagonists is they are often young and we get to see their character growth throughout the years. You Miao(this novel), Duan Ling ( Joyful Reunion), Chi Xiaoduo, (Ming Wang), Chen Xing (Dinghai) and Hong Jun (Tianbao) are some of my favorite young protagonists 🥰🥰🥰

4.5 / 5: “I love you. I want to marry you. Just like when we were together, you’d take care of me like I’m your wife… That sounds a little weird, but…”

You Miao thought for a moment, then recited with utmost seriousness, “‘Who knows when we’ll meet once more; this time, this night, my feelings are hard to endure.’”

reading this as my first book in over a month that wasn’t haikyuu fanfiction honestly feels so surreal 😭 but i wouldn’t change it for anything else.

the last volume ended on a cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers and so when i started this new one after a whole year, it immediately caught me on edge knowing how much deep shit you miao was caught in. the first part of this volume is entrenched in misery as you miao is held under capture by the tartars; we witness truly awful circumstances once the imperial capital became overrun and was torn down in the north.

things do settle much faster (sort of…) than i was expecting, and as the capital is moved down to the south, there’s a lot of negotiations, harsh debates, and uncertain proceedings.

i personally loved it bc ive already seen how much you miao has grown since the first volume, so i felt very proud to witness the way he’s become much craftier and passionate in both mind & spirit. as someone whose mentor is a renowned imperial scholar, that’s a given. but seeing the way these turbulent times have truly shaken him to become more powerful in his role in court and with his many connections, it was very fascinating!!

i loved seeing him & li zhifeng again—they’re so warm & comforting when they’re together. they both rise in positions throughout this volume, which once again made me realize how much time has passed for them to develop since the first volume. i even have a lot of appreciation for the way we get to see more of zhao chan and his own brotherly relationship with you miao once the seat to the emperor’s throne is left empty. there’s an intimacy between them that always left me curious since they’ve first met, and seeing now the way they support each other when everyone’s all on a knife’s edge did leave me quite emotional.

i also really enjoyed seeing nie dan again, who’s in a very tough position of his own as he has to fight with his solders to reclaim as much land that was stolen by the tartars. he doesn’t just have to be cautious on how the tatars will move in defense & offense, but he also has to battle with the minds of those in the newly established court—civil officials causing a lot more trouble that makes things very tense.

all in all, this was good!! it seems the norm that i only found out about this new volume through word of a danmei mutual and not the actual publisher 😭

besides that, i had a pretty enjoyable reading experience and it makes me happy to think it was this story that really inspired me to get back into my tbr pile. anime has been taking up my mind these past two months, and i have no regrets! but i do miss reading beyond fanfiction, so…..here we go :’)

5 stars for the novel, but 1 star for the disgraceful ebook edition from VL.

Meow Meow was a very busy person in this volume.
It was only 15 chapters, but those chapters were packed to the brims.

Book three of an ongoing series. With the capital destroyed and You Miao captured by an invading army, it will take all of his wits--and his companion Li Zhifeng's aid--to escape and begin to rebuild his country.

This series has not been structured like a romance, as the main couple has been together since early in volume 1 with minimal narrative tension in their relationship. More than anything, the romance is an excuse to drop in a sex scene now and then rather than a major plot element. However, without the romance structuring the narrative, the author tends to lean more heavily on battle and fight scenes, which were a bit too divorced from reality for my taste. There was a particularly hallucinatory three pages where You Miao's tenants drove millions of snakes out of the forest, distilled down their gall poison, and used them to make darts that instantly and silently killed enemy soldiers, allowing them to single-handedly conquer a city... And that's not even touching on the medical and injuries bit.

I did however enjoy the extended political bits in this volume. Yay extended debates over redistributing empty land and tax policy. Yay digressions about imperial ministerial structure, as You Miao takes a place in government and begins to plot and scheme. I enjoyed this half of the novel much more. I love plotting and scheming.

I still enjoyed this volume, but I think that the novelty of the premise is beginning to pall without much of a throughline except the very abstract restore glory to the empire and rise to greatness. Fifty-fifty on whether I decide to read volume 4 when the translation comes out.
