A collection of seven of the finest ghost stories written by Montague Rhodes (M.R.) James. The collection includes Whistle and I'll Come to You, Number 13, Count Magnus, The Ash Tree, Lost Hearts, Casting the Runes, and Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance.
Montague Rhodes James, who used the publication name M.R. James, was a noted English mediaeval scholar & provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–18) & of Eton College (1918–36). He's best remembered for his ghost stories which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature. One of James' most important achievements was to redefine the ghost story for the new century by dispensing with many of the formal Gothic trappings of his predecessors, replacing them with more realistic contemporary settings.
Librarian note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
For those not frightened by anything less than a Stephen King novel, this compendium of classic ghost stories may not appeal to you. However, for anyone who delights in sitting around a campfire and being frightened silly by dark tales told darkly, this is a gem. M.R. James, known as one of the best storytellers in a long proud line (and an inspiration to H.P. Lovecraft) can spin a tale with the best of them. Best read late at night, by firelight or candlelight and under a full moon. There are many collections of the works of M.R. James (presumably based on the fact his stories are now public domain). Many are more comprehensive than this short collection. If you'd like to get a taste of his style of tale-spinning, this edition comes highly recommended.
