Fox is an asshole —arrogant, rude, and completely insensitive. He treats me like garbage. But here I am, unable to stop thinking about him. It's a disaster.

It's love at first sight for Cameron, as he falls quickly for his hot roommate, Fox. But for homophobic Fox, Cameron is nothing but a tempting distraction that he doesn't want.
But when he finally lets go and really kisses me, it’s soft. Deep. Vulnerable. And it undoes something in me I didn’t know was even tied up.

I do love a good enemies to lovers book but I was torn over my rating for this book. There were some 4 star moments for sure and the writing kept me engaged for almost all 500+ pages of this book. However, there are some things I find it hard to overlook. First, the book desperately needs a developmental edit - about 200 pages could be cut which would hugely improve the plot, fix the meandering pacing/repetitiveness and spare us from the random extraneous plot points that offer nothing to the story. Second, the book veers off into a strange almost reverse harem thing partway through. Apparently Cameron is irresistible to every gay or straight person on campus for whatever reason. It's cute at first but gets tedious rather quickly when random hot men keep popping up out of nowhere to crush on him. But the thing that made me firmly decide on 3 stars was the unhinged ex-hookup revenge side-plot that led to a brief miscommunication trope side-side-plot between our two MCs. Both side-plots were completely unnecessary and the hard left into an overly dramatic telenovela style conclusion was the deciding factor for me. I enjoyed the writing overall and I think this book will do well, but there's some definite room for improvement if the author wishes to make some changes.
One last note: I hope the author will look at how they write female characters in future (for example, we had quite a few female characters yet none of them were portrayed positively. There was the homophobic overbearing mom, the former alcoholic absentee mom, the cardboard personality lesbian, the flighty and selfish/self-absorbed friend, the completely insane ex-hookup and the nosy pushy coworker). It's odd to have so many female side characters who are all meh. Just weird optics in my opinion.

Kiss Me in the Dark by Goddy Francis

If I could give this a million stars, I would.
This book wrecked me—in the best, most devastating way possible. I devoured it in one sitting and was left staring at the ceiling, processing my emotions like I’d just been through a war.

This is a true enemies-to-lovers with all the angst, all the slow-burn tension, and all the emotional gut punches I could ask for.
It’s messy. It’s raw. It hurts.
And it’s so damn good.

⚠️ Content Warnings:
Homophobia (internal and external)

Parental emotional abuse

Bullying (from a main character!)

Grief/loss

Explicit sexual content

🥀 Spoilery Thoughts Below:
Cameron deserved so much better than what he got from literally everyone except Fox. His father? Garbage. His peers? Trash. Elias?? Oh I cussed that man out in my head multiple times. I still haven’t forgiven him.

Fox? Okay, I wanted to punch him for at least 25% of this book—but the growth? The redemption? The moment he stopped running and finally said “I want this. I want you.” — that made me feel things. Once he made up his mind, he never looked back. He really became the partner Cameron needed.

And then there’s the reveal about Kendra. That scene hit like a brick wall and explained so much of Fox’s rage and emotional detachment. Suddenly his trauma made perfect sense, and my heart broke for him all over again.

As for Cameron’s dad—no. Just no. His last-minute apology or “redemption” doesn’t erase the years of rejection and emotional neglect. I don’t think Cameron will ever get true closure, but I’m glad he has Fox now. Fox will love him through it.

Also, the time skips were done so well. They were emotional checkpoints that gave the story room to breathe. It never felt like we missed out—it felt intentional and perfectly timed.

🔥 Spice Level: High
💔 Angst Level: Off the charts
🧊🔥 Hot & Cold Moments: Plentiful
💞 Satisfaction: Immense

💫 Favorite Tropes:
Enemies to lovers

Forced proximity (roommates!)

Hurt/comfort

Queer awakening

Redemption arc

He falls first, he falls harder

“You’re not a burden” energy

Broken boy x angry boy romance

Found family (sprinkled, not fully fleshed yet—hoping for more in future books!)

This book didn’t just tug at my heart—it yanked it out, made me examine all its broken pieces, then gently put it back together. I’m definitely keeping an eye out for more in this series or universe—because there are so many side characters I need more of.

Favorite quote: “When he finally said, ‘I want this. I want you,’ everything inside me stopped burning and started healing.”

Highly, highly recommend if you’re ready for emotional whiplash with a side of heat and heartbreak.

This was my first book by Goddy Francis, and as someone who’s a total sucker for LGBTQ+ romance stories, I was immediately drawn to it.

I really enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers trope, and even though the romance was a slow burn, it kept me engaged the entire time—I genuinely wanted to see how things would unfold between the two main characters, Fox and Cameron.

At first, Fox’s attitude made any kind of relationship between them seem impossible, so I was kind of fascinated by how suddenly his behavior shifted. It didn’t feel super believable, but I still found it satisfying to read.

As the story progressed, it started to feel a bit like a harem situation around Cameron, which left me a little confused. I had expected the plot to stay more focused on the relationship between Cameron and Fox, and the introduction of several other boys as potential love interests felt unnecessary and distracted from their dynamic.

That being said, I really appreciated the last few chapters, especially when the two characters came out to their families. That moment felt very real and emotional. It reflected the difficult truth many LGBTQ+ people face, and I’m glad the author chose to include that perspective—it added weight and honesty to the story.

I’m giving this book 4 stars. I think it had the potential to be a 5-star read if the focus had stayed more on Cameron and Fox’s relationship and left out some of the side plots. Still, I enjoyed the ride, and I’d definitely read more by this author in the future.

I’ll be honest—I hesitated when I saw Kiss Me in the Dark was over 500 pages. It’s easy for long books to lose momentum or get bogged down in unnecessary detail. But not this one. Not at all. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. And now? I wish I had the hardcover sitting on my shelf.

This book hit so close to home. It’s one of those rare reads that knows exactly where to push emotionally—sometimes painfully so—but in a way that felt cathartic, intimate, and honest. As someone who’s no stranger to emotional masochism in fiction, I loved the way Goddy Francis layered in emotional depth and unrelenting romantic tension.

Cameron and Fox’s dynamic is everything. Fox is a total ass—let’s not sugarcoat it—but somehow, the kind of ass you end up loving against your better judgment. A homophobic party boy with walls as thick as his denial. And Cameron? He’s the good, nerdy kid who treats Fox with more grace and quiet strength than he deserves, but never loses his own sense of self. The result is a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance filled with aching vulnerability, respect, and restraint.

The story never dragged. Every chapter had something—be it emotional unraveling, tension so thick it could be cut with a knife, or a tender moment that melted your heart just when you needed it. The unspoken tension (UST) is palpable, and the pacing of their emotional evolution is perfect. The push-and-pull, the simmering build-up, and the heartbreak—it’s all there, and it works.

If you like your romance heartfelt, your characters emotionally messy, and your slow burn deliciously satisfying, this one’s a must-read. Easily one of the best in the trope, and a new favorite for me.

Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the tropes. I loved the story line, I just don’t know that I was a fan of some of the language used. But that is kinda what the story really was about.

The character development was amazing & how it ended was great, I actually cried at one part and if you’ve read it you can probably guess where!

The side characters really brought the story together well as there wasn’t a lot of major focus on them like some other books I’ve read.
I would loved to have found out more about Elias though, his story seems a little unfinished.
I did notice a whole or two in the story, when Cam has a job but his parents weren’t aware & thought he worked elsewhere yet somehow his mother is fully away he doesn’t work where he previously said… so that was a problem in the story for me.

Other than that I loved it and would definitely read another story or more by Goddy!

This book surprised me, in a good way. I started out hating Fox and didn’t think he could be redeemed. The way he treated Cam was awful and truly made this a bully romance. However, I found myself rooting for them! It was definitely a slowwwww burn but it was worth it in the end. Getting to know Fox and the emotional trauma he was dealing with, made my heart break for him. The story was so good, it tore me open and then put me back together. It was emotional, raw, messy, beautiful and healing. I loved it.

Tropes: forced proximity, opposites attract, sunny vs. grumpy, love triangles (galore!), medium burn

This book is not a difficult read. It is repetitive for the entirety of the book and could easily be 250-350 pages long if we took out repetitive thoughts, stream of conscious thinking, and overuse of popular diatribe.

That being said, I actually enjoyed this book. Here’s what I liked: Cameron’s growth throughout the book is normal (ish). He goes through what would typically be a sheltered child going to college away from his parents for the first time development. He has moments where he struggles with independence and indecision on his actions. I enjoyed his attempts to balance home/work/school with the limited capacity he had. Even his overly dramatic outbursts seem to be well-timed with events that would cause him grief. I had the sense of just wanting to tell him things would be “ok.” I also liked Blaze & Fox. Blaze's consistency throughout the book was a balm to my soul. He did not develop in ways that subtracted from the story, but rather offered a good, solid supporting character. And Fox. Fox was a wild, rollercoaster of a ride. I thought the spots where his POV were well placed and offered much needed insight.

Here is what I did not like: Everything else. The writing was sub-par. The reason it was an easy read was due to language and tense usage throughout, also a good & thorough editing would have been appreciated for continuity. The timeline of the novel was not well spaced and seemed to be sluggish in some areas, and speedy in others and it was hard to follow the pacing of the story. Every single one of the characters aside from Cameron was annoying. It was like the author took gross generalized personality types and inflated them to their most obscene and dramatic selves and went with that. It felt like a high school story instead of college. The characters are supposed to be anywhere from 18 to 25 years in age, and they act like they are 14-17 years in age. Also, emotions seemed to be dramatized, as well, and conversations would go from normal to over-the-top emotional without provocation. There was also a lot of unnecessary door slamming and conversations that never got resolved with confusing time jumps. Even the spice seems rushed.

I probably would not recommend this book to someone, unless they admitted to reading those pay-by-chapter apps you can get for your phone, or they like reading about teen dramas.

I got a free digital copy of this book from BookSiren and these are my honest opinions of the book.

Kiss me in the dark

A nice enemies to lovers that you lock in your heart. This was a beautiful story full of self-confidence, self-acceptance and finding out who you are and what you want to be. The story is about Cameron and Fox. Cameron starts his first year of college and moves off campus. Fox becomes his roommate. But what remains is Fox is arrogant, full of himself and a homophobe. Cameron builds a group of friends for himself and becomes more and more open about his sexuality. During the story Cameron and Fox grow closer and get to know each other. When Fox suddenly kisses Cameron, a lot changes or not?

Their chemistry jumps off the page. The story was very nicely constructed which made me keep reading and I had enough time to get to know both of them and really dive into the story. You mainly read from Cameron's point of view, but every now and then a chapter from Fox's. I really liked that, you really get a glimpse into his head and because of this I understood Fox even better. I think this is a wonderful book to read and if you read English I would definitely recommend this book!

I loved this book. It was a slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance. I loved Cameron. He's sweet and a little awkward, a bit nerdy. Raised by religious parents, he's also in the closet, and has been bullied in high school. Fox... well Fox is a jerkhole. Bad first impression, bad first meeting. I get Cam finds him very attractive even if he finds his attitude completely off-putting.

I found it a little confusing the day after they met, Cam was worried what would happen if Fox found out he was both gay and attracted to him... but from the previous interactions, Fox already believes he's gay- complained about it more than once- and pointed out that Cam keeps staring and "checking him out." It wasn't much of a secret if the first two people he met at school figured it out in seconds. lol

I loved that Cam was able to make some good friends in Leanne and Landon. And seemed to have no trouble making more and getting along with people- which I was very happy for. This story was a journey for him coming into his own and having some freedom away from his parents.

Fox really grew on me. Though his and Cam's interactions, we start to realize there's more to him than the tough front. I enjoyed getting to know him. And I loved his attraction to Cam, whom he really thought well of. This story was a journey for him, too. (I was so glad this story was dual POV)

I liked the dynamic between them, and the way their relationship developed. The chemistry between Fox and Cam sizzled, and I was hooked to their story. I also loved the supporting characters.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I would definitely read more. 5 stars.

This book, despite its flaws, managed to captivate me.
The narrative pulled me in, and I genuinely enjoyed reading it. However, there were several aspects that detracted from the overall experience. One of the most significant issues was the excessive repetition throughout the book.
The same thoughts and dialogues were echoed, which didn’t contribute to the plot. It often felt like the characters were stuck in a loop, particularly in their discussions about guys and relationships. Don't they have other topics in college?

The conclusion of the book felt disjointed, resembling four epilogues with time jumps that reiterated the same messages.

I have never encountered so many "I love you" phrases in a single book, along with repetitive questions like "What do you want/mean?" and "You can’t say something like that."

Another point of confusion was the relationships between characters. It was odd that even the straight characters seemed to be drawn to Cam.

More importantly, I struggled to understand why Cam ended up with Fox. Aside from Fox’s attractiveness, the two had little in common, and I felt Elias would have been a much better match. After their relationship started, Fox underwent a sudden personality change that felt unrealistic.

I expected a spicy romance, but the steamy scenes were surprisingly tame. Descriptions like "He touched me down there" lacked details, especially considering the character of Fox, from whom I anticipated more expressive language.
Steam level 1/5.

Despite these criticisms, the story managed to keep me engaged.

There's a reason I don't choose to read too many slow burn romances and this book definitely reminded me why lol. At 500 plus pages I was dyyyinnng but I also see why a slow burn was needed for these two. Cam is a closeted boy with religious parents and is determined to not get pulled in by boys especially not sinfully hot boys who are cocky and blow hot and cold. Then in comes Fox, his new roomate, who is all of those things and more. Cam is immediately drawn to Fox's good looks but the way he treats Cam leaves alot to be desired and makes Fox unlikable in a lot of ways. But what starts as emenies to lovers slowly turns toward friendship and pining that builds into an inferno the more they spend time together and get to know each other. Cam breaks down the sturdy walls Fox puts up and Fox can't help but to fall for Cam even though at first Cam isn't sure he can trust in those feelings. But Fox proves himself and proves himself in small and big ways. They both grow separately and together and the story their love creates is a rollercoaster ride you dont really want to get off from. They'll make you feel all the feels and you wont regret it one bit. This is a new to me author but not for long as I plan on reading whatever they come up with next. So if you like emenies to lovers, forced proximity, pining and all the heat then this is the book for you.

KISS ME IN THE DARK is such a fun title that I felt like I had to read it, even though I don't read a lot of romance unless there's an element of suspense.

Cameron was outed during his senior year of high school. He starting college, encouraged by his parents to study, find a nice girl, and stay away from parties. They think his roommate, Fox, will help be a positive influence on their son. Little do they know that Fox pretty much despises Cameron.

The college setting didn't feel all that real. A lot of the characters come off as stereotypes in some way. Two supporting characters end up having a better story than the main characters. Characters sometimes appear and then disappear, never to be heard from again. It's too long; an editor with a heavy hand could have helped tighten up the book, getting rid of some excessive wordiness that repeats what the reader already knows. And everyone smirks entirely too much.

The preceding paragraph makes it sound like there's nothing to like about the book. There is: The author successfully convinced me to root for Cameron and Fox.

I received an advance reader copy from the author through BookSirens, for which I thank them. All opinions are mine.

This is my 1st book with this author. I love how we go on this journey of a young person, trying to navigate coming out, being out, finding love and holding on to that love. And how holding on to it, what that means and how he grow from there. There's alot of learning to be brave and confident while being vulnerable.

Cameron was paired the most assholery roommate ever. And Fox is the popular kid in college, good look, smart, and excellent jock. This is a classic enemies to lover trope and he fell first, and hard. It was so unbelievable that you do question him for a few chapters, just like Cam did.

But over time, his action is so loud that you feel Fox really meaning what he said. And he's there when Cam needed that support, and he lend it without asking. Meanwhile, Fox himself also got vulnerable and unsure as he navigate thru this new territory as he was detested about it at the beginning. Lots of growth for both.

I will say, even thought the book is over 500+ long, I didn't want to stop. I wanted to know what our boys are doing, how they're going to the next step, and what happens. The author definitely had a great writing pace and the style that keeps reader captivated.

Thank you Book Siren & Goddy Frances for the ARC.

If you kiss in the dark is it still a kiss? If you are a man and you kiss a man, is it still a kiss? The answer to both is yes, of course there are many reasons to be kissing in the dark and it could mean many things. What you will discover as you begin your journey with this book is that kissing in the dark is ostensibly easy, in reality a hige and potentially life changing challenge with repercussions that you might never have seen coming. What matters most though is, aside from that kiss, knowing the other person will stand by your side, stand with you through the hardest moments as well as the happiest and even the saddest.

'Kiss Me In The Dark' is a College romance but it is more than that, it is an awakening, a realisation, a discovery. It is heartfelt, harsh at times but gentle with it. The story guides the reader through realities that many have to face, helping them see how they affect people, how we can all try to be stronger, more understanding. And how we too can find not only ourselves but our people, those who believe in us for who we truly are. This is truly a story showcasing the endurance of true love, Cameron and Fox are outstanding and their love is beautiful.

Best emotional wreckage

This MM Enemies to lovers had me on an emotional roller-coaster. I was laughing, I was crying, and I even groaning in frustration. The characters are in college so there were quite a bit of immature characters. That said I couldn't get enough of the two MMCs. The supporting characters were fun and added to the story. Goddy Francis the author took care in writing the sensitive topics mentioned. There was a lot of homophobia written throughout so please check TW. This one is for you if you enjoy MM new adult romance with angst, forbidden love, forced proximity, dual POV, and enemies to lovers.

Cameron is sweet and awkward. The amount of pining he did. There is A LOT of build-up with the slowest burn that ignites.

Fox is abrasive, mean, and a bully. He has so many conflicting feelings he doesn't know what to do with them till finally does some self-reflecting.

I just love these boys. My heart ached for them so many times. Their pull to each other is magnetic. I was sighing so much throughout this story, my heart was in my throat. I screamed "FINALLY" when they gave in and admitted their feelings.

Kiss me in the Dark’s Blurb

Some loves are forbidden. Others are undeniable. Cameron Brooke is starting college with one goal: stay focused, stay invisible, and definitely stay away from boys like Fox Wilder—the charming, reckless son of the university chancellor. Fox is everything Cameron was warned about: cocky, chaotic, and dangerously attractive. But when they’re forced to share an apartment, Cameron’s carefully built walls begin to crack. For a closeted freshman raised by strict religious parents, falling for his roommate was never part of the plan. Fox isn’t looking for complications either—but there’s something about Cameron he can’t ignore.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a taste of what college life can be like basically living with you rival turned more? Or if you ever felt like you’d rather go noticed in the background—you’re in for a nice treat with this read.

I do love a good enemies to lovers and this one was pretty good on that front! The slow burn was...

G L A C I A L

But even after they got together, the book felt like it went on forever. I wouldn't have minded if it were a little shorter, either through ending earlier or side plots slimmed down. As far as character development, several characters undergo Humongous changes! The one character development I thought felt a little weird though, Fox goes from womanizing, bullying, giant homophobe... to super lovey dovey boyfriend who makes declarations of love in every scene? That part felt off to me. Imo he seems like the type of person who would be more comfortable showing he cares with gestures or thoughtful gifts rather than words.

cameron & fox - 3.5 stars 🤍 this one was fun! I had a bit of trouble initially getting into it, and this definitely veered into bully romance (though i personally didn’t mind as i often like the bully trope) but once it started getting going i got very invested and wanted to keep
reading. though i agree with some other reviews that this probably could’ve been edited and cut down a bit with some unnecessary extra info, i did truly find myself rooting for cam & fox and waiting for their well deserved HEA. with how quickly i finished this and how much i loved the characters by the end, i would definitely read another book by Goddy in the future!

This book hurts—in that delicious, slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers kind of way.

Cameron just wants a quiet college life. What he gets is Fox Wilder: cocky, chaotic, and way too attractive for Cameron’s peace of mind. Forced to room together, they clash instantly—but it’s the kind of tension that simmers until it inevitably explodes.

Goddy Francis nails the emotional push and pull. The longing, the miscommunication, the magnetic pull between two people who shouldn’t work but do. The intimacy builds slowly, layered with vulnerability and hidden pain that makes their eventual connection feel earned and unforgettable.

I absolutely loved this book. Cameron and Fox’s story really hit me in the emotions. From cringing to laughing and crying, the connectionI had with this book made me feel like I’ve been in a roller coaster.
I can honestly say that halfway through the novel I wanted to give it a rave review which I have never previously considered.
There isn’t too much I can say without giving away spoilers which would be a crime for this book. It was an absolute delight to read Kiss Me in the Dark and I will be hunting down more work from Goddy Francis for my reading list.

I highly recommend this book. I read it in a day and is one I'll go back too once I heal lol

I received an arc, and this is my honest opinion and cannot wait to read more from this author!

A little longer than most e-books but needed. Cameron & Fox become roommates in college. Fox is an entitled "p**ck", he's captain of the soccer team, all the girls fall all over him, homophobic etc. Cameron is noticeably gay, not quite closeted but not flamboyant & just trying to get through his college years. Fox is mean as heck to Cameron yet Cameron like everyone else in the school has a crush on him.
Till one day Fox can't get him out of his mind. He's feeling a sudden attraction & doesn't know how to stop it. All his life raised to believe "gays" are "bad". The story is a push & pull on feelings between 2 guys hiding from what they are or possibly could be. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review..
“Kiss Me In The Dark” is a compelling enemies-to-lovers romance that explores themes of identity, vulnerability, and forbidden love. The character development, especially the emotional growth between Cameron and Fox, is well-executed and engaging. However, some dialogue and plot moments felt somewhat unrealistic or forced, which occasionally disrupted the narrative flow. Despite these minor issues, the book offers a meaningful and heartfelt story that fans of slow-burn queer romance will appreciate.

My god this was FANTASTIC.

Cameron is such a lovely, wholesome bean and deserves so much better than what his family give him. I loved the journey to self acceptance that he went through and found it so satisfying when it all came together.

Fox is a total jerk to start but same deal, his journey to self acceptance was just so good and so satisfying.

I loved all their friends and how these two idiots got through everything.

This book made me feel like fanfiction used to make me feel. Run, don't walk.

My Review

I received an ARC of this book from Book Sirens. This book is already out.

Enemies to lovers is my jam so I was stroked for this book and it didn't disappoint. But please be ready for a hell of ride emotionally. You will laugh, you will get angry, you'll be worried, you will be happy at least least I was.

I enjoyed it to the last word. Then I wanted to read it again. I will be reading more from Goddy Francis.

Until next time peace and happy reading

He wants to succeed in college and tha is to keep his head down and get on with his work. He will end up having them as a roommate and the sparks fly between them. Neither of their parents will approve of the relationship. See how they deal with it all

I would have probably rated this book 3 stars based on the first half alone. I wasn't a fan of Fox and his interactions with Cameron were brutal. However, this book is quite long..... long enough to understand Fox better and for their chemistry to build. Overall, it was well written and I became invested in the story.

Cameron and Fox had me on an emotional roller coaster.
Anger, hurt, fear, laughter, then finally love and joy.
Try as they may, these two could not deny what they felt for each other.
Their animosity becomes a simmering tinder of attraction and heat.
