Let me start by saying that Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairytales to see retold. The story can feel repetitive, but I love how each retelling manages to bring its own twist. This one was no exception. The mix of science and magic was definitely unique, but in a gothic fantasy setting, it felt a little out of place, and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it.
What I did enjoy were the relationships. Ash and Nera truly felt like siblings who bickered, but at the end of the day, they had each other's backs. I also really liked Nera and Mia’s bond. Nera was the sister Mia wished she had, fun and lively, but also protective and caring.
Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the romance. I don’t feel they spent enough time with each other to form a true connection. On their own, I actually preferred the MMC to the FMC. She wasn’t a bad character, but her tendency to throw herself into danger without considering the consequences was kinda annoying. She was told why she shouldn’t do something, and then did it anyway. I get that her heart was in the right place, but it still irked me.
As for the curse, I wanted more from it. We were told about it rather than shown, and much of the first half focused on the FMC trying to escape rather than actively seeking a way to break it. The villain wasn't present for most of the book. Yes, she was glamoured, but I wanted to see her true nature. Things only really picked up in the last 20%, which made it more exciting, but by then, it felt a little too late.
Even though this one wasn’t fully for me, I’m still planning to continue the series. Nera’s story, especially her complicated relationship with Silas, has me intrigued enough to see where things go.
