Everyone knows to never look a fae in the eyes, yet no one warned me he would hide behind the mask of a beast.
Death awaits those who get caught in the Wild Hunt, and only a magical veil protects the people of Penumbra from the monsters coming for them. So when a beast threatens to destroy the veil, Mia Clementine must break her vows of sorcery and use her magic to fight him, or risk losing everyone she loves.
But the beast isn’t what he seems, and now the fae king owns her soul. Dragged into his mythical land, she must unravel the curse that turned him into a monster in order to regain her freedom—or die trying.
The longer she stays in his world, the more irresistible her feelings for him become. Hate turns into passion, and newly discovered truths test her loyalties, forcing her to choose to save her people or the fae world she’s grown to love.
If you like Howl's Moving Castle and ACOTAR, then you will love this gothic Beauty and the Beast retelling in a fantasy setting.

5⭐️ 1.5🌶️ 🌹Beauty & The Beast Retelling 🖤Gothic Romance 🌹Enemies to Lovers 🖤Found Family 🌹Feisty FMC 🖤Morally Grey MMC 🌹“You're Mine” 🖤“He Falls First & Hard 🌹Slow Burn 🖤Single First Person POV
I had so much fun reading Unraveled. It takes a lot for me to be invested in a slow burn romance. Abbey Fox kept me enthralled with the perfect amount of world building and well developed characters. The loose retelling of The Beauty & the Beast gave all the feel good nostalgia vibes while still standing on its own as a gothic romantasy. Mia is trying to protect her family when she attacks Ash when he tries to destroy the veil that keep the beasts out. She has never seen a beast like him before and when he kidnaps her to his cursed kingdom, she makes the mistake of looking into his eyes. Now Ash owns her soul. Mia sees beyond Ash’s cursed beast form and realizes he is fae king. She agrees to help break the curse if Ash will let her go after. The longer she spends in his mythical kingdom, hate turns to passion and intense feelings causing her to question everything she’s ever known. I loved seeing how Mia’s mind worked to solve the mystery behind the curse especially since no one was able to answer direct questions. Mia and Ash grow and change as characters. Mia never believed she was powerful but becomes more confident in herself and Ash is perfectly morally grey and becomes soft for her. The last 30% of the book had me frantically clicking my kindle page because I had to know how it ended. This slow burn has so much yearning and steamy moments before we get some delicious spice.

A Few Favorite Quotes:
“What if I use my newly gained skills to escape you?” “Then you’d better run fast, Monster, because I like the chase.”
“When I’m not with you, I’m trying to get back here, to your side. You have stolen my every thought, my every breath. From the moment you took a part of my soul, and every day after, I’ve been defenseless against you. You’ve stolen my heart, and I don’t want it back.”
If you ever watched howls moving castle and swooned over Howl, then you absolutely need to meet Ash. Unraveled is everything I could have wanted in a fairytale retelling - tortured soul, a haunting atmosphere, and a romance that lingers long after the final page.
This gothic Beauty and the Beast retelling has a dark fae twist and at times leans into horror, with its eerie landscapes and haunting beasts. That unsettling edge only heightened the tension and made the story all the more immersive.
The relationship between Mia and Ash was utterly enchanting, it was tender, slow burning, and full of emotional depth. Having said that, the side characters were equally compelling. I especially loved Nera and her nuanced growth, while Naheli, the loyal wolf / beast companion, completely stole my heart (she gave me Derpy from K-Pop Demon Hunters vibes, but make her a wolf)
Adding to the magic, the artwork woven throughout the book was breathtaking. Each piece brought the world to life, helping me visualize the settings and deepening the storytelling. The fact the author did these illustrations herself is a testament to her talent.
At its heart, this book explores love, loyalty, and what it means to do what’s right, even if it goes against everything you’ve been raised to believe.
With magical libraries, gothic atmospheres, and a captivating beast at its center, Unraveled is a must read for anyone who loves dark fairytale retellings. 💫
This was the best Beauty & The Beast re-telling I have EVER read. Growing up, I was always enchanted in the beast & seen his grief, the weight he carried, the inner turmoil; Unraveled by Abbey Fox reminded me why I loved the beast in the original fairytale & where my lore started. My infatuation with the beast was only heightened as I read this book by Abbey Fox. She took the heavily beloved fairytale & transformed it into something so magical. I was enthralled the whole time.
As much as I loved the beast, I equally loved the FMC. She was no ordinary beauty, she had a hidden identity, hidden magic, a hidden prophecy which added such a cool element to this re-telling. She wasn't the type to surrender & sit in the corner; she was ballsy, fierce, quick on her feet, & always had a retort back anyone who challenged her. I adored her nickname "Monster" & how the beast used her nickname first as a mocking tool but then turned into a term of endearment and admiration.
The romance between the two main characters was enchanting. Slow burn, enemies to reluctant allies to lovers, & the spicy scenes were beautifully written. The nickname, the banter, "Monster, you're mine"; it was all exceptionally written. Nothing in this story felt out of place.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review!
i absolutely devoured this!!!! i finished it less than 48 hours after starting it because i was captivated from page one! i loved the world building and found the gothic atmosphere so magical. the premise was incredibly unique, although it is a beauty and the beast retelling i felt like it was still very different in how it handled that and i felt like i hadn’t read a book like this before!
i loved the main characters obviously but the side characters were also really great, especially Nera and Naheli !! i felt super immersed in the world and story and the mystery element of the curse had me flying through this!!
i genuinely had such a great time and i’m so excited for the next book, a loose Hades & Persephone retelling ?? sounds amazing!!
4⭐️ this was a nice, dark gothic romantasy. it helped with my reading slump which is always a plus. it doesn’t rise to a 5 star for me because i felt like the culmination of the plot was a bit convenient and anticlimactic. otherwise, i really enjoyed the world building and characters
2🌶️ the spice was average and acceptable for a wide, adult audience. it’s definitely still 18+. there were only a couple of scenes in about 420 pages, mostly towards the end and they weren’t particularly long. cw: chase
thank you to abbey fox for this advance copy. i’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.
4’3/5⭐️ Thank you so much to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an arc of “Unraveled”. Omg, i had such an amazing time reading this book!! The gothic fantasy atmosphere mixed with the “Beauty and the Beast” retelling aspects made this book a wonderful fantasy romance read ☺️🖤 I absolutely loved Ash and Mia (and Naheli too!!). Highly recommend if you want a fun book that has you intrigued and kicking your feet 🤭✨

Unraveled is book 1 of a new series of standalone novels. I had the absolute pleasure and honor of beta reading this story and immediately fell in love with Mia, our sassy and bookish FMC. Ash is mysterious, dangerous, and haunted by a curse he can’t escape.

This enchanting tale explores the longstanding strife between mortals and the fae. Mia and Ash’s encounters are laced with so much snarky banter and tension! I was waiting with bated breath for their resolve to unravel.
With alluring gothic vibes, captivating characters, and a delicious slow burn enemies to lovers romance, Unraveled is a must-read for romantasy lovers of BATB retellings!
Huge thanks to the author for the review copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.

-sigh- I really, REALLY wanted to love this book! I had such high hopes and maybe that was my flaw in this reading journey. For starters, the Edgar Allan Poe quote at the very beginning was everything! It really shot my excitement up for this book. I thought the world was intriguing and I loved seeing folklore being used in this book. There's some really great quotes and the atmosphere is great! Sadly, a lot in this book didn't work for me. I really, really didn't like the female main character. In the beginning it was understandable how she was acting , but then it got to the point of annoying and it felt like a grown adult throwing tantrums. The same thing goes for the male love interest, Ash, he just came off as incredibly immature even though it's very clear he hundreds of years old. While I get this was a Beauty and the Beast retelling, I just felt like there wasn't any real growth between our two characters. They just lacked a lot of depth for me and by the end of the book, I just didn't care about either of them. My other issue, which I feel is more of a me thing than the book, was seeing a lot of the plot twists coming. This is something that's very 50/50 for my reading experience and myself and sure enough, I saw every plot twist coming and it left me feeling unsurprised by any of them. Overall, I don't know if I will give this author another try. I've heard whispers this might be getting a second book that's like a Hades and Persephone retelling which has me a bit hesitant. I think if you're a lover of gothic settings, fae, and Beauty and the Beast retellings then you may end up loving this book a lot more.
All thoughts, feelings, experiences, and opinions are honest and my own.
I will always love a Beauty and the Beast retelling and instantly fell in love with the premise of Unraveled and it's gothic fantasy twist on a beloved story.
There were so many things I enjoyed but what I really loved was how it kept to the original story but put its own twist on it as well. The writing was engaging and so descriptive and the way the curse was written left me with actual chills and how it spreads as well as the connection to the roses. Mia being a librarian and how her magic was used, I found it so interesting and I especially loved the banter and the tension between the two main characters it was palpable at times and you were just waiting for them to give in. The epilogue eludes to whom the next book will be about and it certainly has me intrigued as I really loved her character in Unraveled.
It was a really good gothic fantasy and one that is perfect for spooky season, the art especially throughout was so beautiful.
Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity to read and review before publication. All opinions are my own.
Thank you NetGalley and Abbey Fox for sharing an arc with me in exchange for my honest review.
Beauty and the Beast was always my favourite Disney movie, not just for the magical castle full of singing furniture or the happily-ever-after with a prince, but for the escape it offered. Belle’s yearning for more in a world that frowned upon her curiosity and demanded conformity resonated deeply with me.
Abbey Fox captures that spirit in her fairy tale retelling and layers it with so much more. From Mia secretly studying forbidden grimoires to uncovering the truth about what really powers the veil protecting Penumbra, every page hooked me. I was constantly wondering what she was truly seeing in Ash’s eyes, watching her friendship with Nera bloom, and feeling her connection to Naheli deepen.
I devoured this book and am absolutely feral to know what comes next after that epilogue. Thank you @abbeyfoxauthor for sharing this arc with me, I loved every minute of it!
Hooked right from the start! It’s a perfect romantasy with high stakes plot, mysteries and gothic, gaslamp vibe ❤️🔥
Thank you to Abbey Fox, The Wild Rabbit LLC and NetGalley for the eARC 🫶🏼 I have read her Wicked Kingdom series and loved it so was very curious about this as I love a Beautiful and the Beast retellings, even more so when it’s gothic. It did not disappointed! I’m so excited for the next book in this new interconnected gothic romantasy series. It sounds so good already 👀
«It’s a beast—except not like any I’ve seen before. I’ve caught the eye of a predator, and my mind and body know it.»

“What if I use my newly gained skills to escape you?” “Then you’d better run fast, Monster, because I like the chase.”
I was so immersed in this right from the start. The world building takes you right into this gothic, gaslamp fantasy vibe right from the start and I absolutely loved it! At the same time it felt like the plot had so much mysteries and high stakes. It was so enjoyable all the way through and even made me laugh several times. I could not put it down and at the same time I didn’t want it to end. Good writing, plot, chapters and world that I can’t wait to explore more of. I thought I had the twists figured out early, but I got surprised by most of it… I love when that happens! 🙌🏼
“He is a light, and I’m a moth drawn to it.“
The characters was also really fun to explore. I loved the diversity in them and they all had a lot of mystery that I wasn’t sure how to place my trust for several characters. It has some found family that I love! They seem well developed and mature in their own way. Some was explored more than others, and my only complain is that I would love getting to know more of them a bit deeper. Very excited to get to know a bit more of someone else in book 2 🖤👀 The MCs are so good together, tension for days 🔥 LOVE his nickname for her too 😍🫠🤭
“Now, easy there, Monster. Your feelings for me are showing”
Thank you for the ARC but this one just didn’t hit for me. The start was slow, and the writing style felt very YA which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it didn’t suit what I was hoping for here.
I also found the whole “monster” nickname pretty cringe and Mia’s decision-making… questionable at best. Running around the castle grounds after being repeatedly warned that it’s not safe??? I’m tired of FMCs being made to act stupid for the sake of the plot.
I went in expecting more of a Beauty and the Beast retelling, but honestly, I didn’t really get that vibe. Ash didn’t give me “beast” energy at all, and outside of Mia having to admit she loves him to break his curse, the connection to the fairytale felt paper-thin.
By the time I got closer to the end I realised I didn’t really care what happened. I wasn’t connected to any of the characters and finishing the book felt more like a box-tick than something I was excited about.
Overall, the concept had potential but the execution wasn’t for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book was phenomenal and the writing had me fully immersed in the story. I read this in one sitting because I could not put it down. Mia, who is human, is a librarian who lives in a world where she has to hide her magic abilities. She ends up being kidnapped by the fae. Her character is complicated. She honestly makes a lot of decisions purely based on her being stubborn. Ash, who is the sassiest of faes, makes a bargain with her to help him break the curse on the unseelie. I loved loved loved how it played out. I loved how both characters fight each other but with so much tension, deep yearning and wanting. Loved also the side characters. They were fun. Some of the twists came out of nowhere to me and I am here for it. I am excited to read more in this world.
I feel like this could have been executed better. Chapters 1-4 could have been summarized and compiled. This book just didn't capture my attention, monotone, and I was extremely bored.
A gothic Beauty and the Beast retelling set in a darkly magical fantasy world, Unraveled brings a fresh twist to a beloved tale. Mia Clementine’s life shatters when she discovers the truth about her world, her magic, and the beast who captures her soul. As she’s pulled into the fae king’s cursed realm, she must uncover the secrets behind his curse while facing the choice between saving her people or the fae land she grows to love.
The world is beautifully crafted with a haunting, atmospheric feel that pulls you straight into its shadows and secrets. I loved the way the magic system was woven into the story, creating a vivid backdrop that felt both enchanting and dangerous.
Mia’s fierceness really stood out for me. Her growth as she stepped into her powers was one of my favourite parts. I also enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers tension that slowly softened into reluctant allies and then something deeper. The romance had just the right touch of intensity without overtaking the story. The side characters were another highlight, especially Nera and Naheli, who added richness to the world.
This book is perfect if you love gothic retellings, fae realms, and stories that blend dark fantasy with romance. Fans of Beauty and the Beast retellings, enemies-to-lovers dynamics, and richly built fantasy worlds will definitely want to pick this one up.
I absolutely loved this story! It had me hooked from the very beginning. Mia is a Librarian with access to magic, who is supposed to be guarding the grimmoires in the library. However, she has been reading them and learning the spells within. When the Wild Hunt comes around, she attempts to help the Scientists take down the Beast who is trying to destroy the Veil protecting the human world from the Fae. This only puts a target on her back and she is then taken by the Beast into the Fae realm.
This is a slow burn, enemies to lovers story. There is also a little spice, however, it does not overpower the story in any way. It's actually kind of refreshing after reading so many Romantasies that focus on the opposite. The romance feels natural and there's definitely chemistry there. Also, Naheli and Nera were my fan favorite characters. Naheli gives off vibes similar to the Tiger from Kpop Demon Hunters, however, Naheli is also a fearsome God who will strike you down if needed. And Nera is the cool sister in law who will accept you and make fun of her brother with you. I can't wait for the next installment with Nera's story.
“When I’m not with you, I’m trying to get back here, to your side. You have stolen my every thought, my every breath. I love a good beauty and a beast retelling and this was a good example of it . I liked how it was portrayed and the plot twists were great some of them I expected and others not . It was slow at first and it didn’t get interesting to me until some time . I liked the FMC and her being reckless surprisingly didn’t bother me like it always do in books ; She was smart not naive . The MMC was great but he didn’t leave a mark like I liked him fine and he was sweet but nothing special. Their romance was sweet and not rushed . Their banter was good and funny . I loved nera the MMC’s sister she was rebellious and funny . I think the next book will be about her and I’m definitely interested.
Overall I’d recommend it if you like the tropes above and a fan like me of the beauty and the best retellings .

If you need a book to fill the ACOTAR shaped hole in your heart, look no further! Unraveled is a gothic retelling of beauty and the beast that follows Mia, a librarian that can cast spells. Mia gets kidnapped by the beast aka the fae king when she tried to use her magic to stop him from breaking the barrier that keeps the humans safe from the monsters known as lunagyres. Mia tries to figure out ways to escape the beast AKA Ash. Then she strikes a deal with Ash that if she was able to get rid of the curse that has fallen on all of the far, then she can leave. However the longer she stays, the more at home she feels in this strange world, especially as she and Ash get closer to one another. I love a good retelling of a classic story and this author did a wonderful job with it! I enjoyed her writing style and the pacing of the story. I especially love the relationship forming between Ash and Mia and learning about the magic system. Thank you to R & R Book Tour for the arc 🌹
No matter what everyone says, I want to look at that fae in the eyes! Exceptionally executed Beauty and the Beast retelling, it grasps you from the start. The story is gothic, dark and has a eerie tint to it, there some aspects or concepts that in my own personal POV could count as a little bit of horror but due to the darkness of the story, and the images pictured.
I can honestly say this book kept me reading until late at night, it's addictive! An amazing book to read this fall.
Thank you NetGalley and Abbey Fox for granting me the opportunity to read this ARC!
I stumbled upon this book on Netgalley and saw that it was a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Although I have some issues with the original tale, I do love all those retellings. I was therefore really curious and requested a copy. Luckily the author granted me a copy.
After finishing this book I'm left behind with mixed feelings and I honestly don't entirely know why. Did I read the book at the wrong moment? Was it not the right book compared to the other books I'm currently reading? Was there an issue with the book? I just know that although I kept reading, it was quite an easy and fast read, I never really cared about what I was reading. I never really felt a connection with the characters and their story.
Maybe it's also the motivation of the enchantress for doing what she does. Don't get me wrong. The author really thought this curse out. All the details work, all the consequences work, all the loopholes were created with care. But the one thing the original Beauty and the Beast tale DOES right is not making this about a woman declined by a man. And that's what happens in this book. She did all this, because he turned her down. It doesn't matter if it's partly because of what she is.
However, for a big part of the story I didn't know that was gonna be the whole motivation for this mess and yet I never really felt it. There were good moments, there were some emotional moments, the epilogue did make me curious about the next book. But on the whole this book didn't really stand out to me. I know. There are a lot of beauty and the beast retellings. Maybe it is hard to stand out. And like I said, maybe it's a me issue and not a book issue.
Let me start by saying that Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairytales to see retold. The story can feel repetitive, but I love how each retelling manages to bring its own twist. This one was no exception. The mix of science and magic was definitely unique, but in a gothic fantasy setting, it felt a little out of place, and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it.
What I did enjoy were the relationships. Ash and Nera truly felt like siblings who bickered, but at the end of the day, they had each other's backs. I also really liked Nera and Mia’s bond. Nera was the sister Mia wished she had, fun and lively, but also protective and caring.
Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the romance. I don’t feel they spent enough time with each other to form a true connection. On their own, I actually preferred the MMC to the FMC. She wasn’t a bad character, but her tendency to throw herself into danger without considering the consequences was kinda annoying. She was told why she shouldn’t do something, and then did it anyway. I get that her heart was in the right place, but it still irked me.
As for the curse, I wanted more from it. We were told about it rather than shown, and much of the first half focused on the FMC trying to escape rather than actively seeking a way to break it. The villain wasn't present for most of the book. Yes, she was glamoured, but I wanted to see her true nature. Things only really picked up in the last 20%, which made it more exciting, but by then, it felt a little too late.
Even though this one wasn’t fully for me, I’m still planning to continue the series. Nera’s story, especially her complicated relationship with Silas, has me intrigued enough to see where things go.
Thank you NetGalley and The Wild Rabbit LLC for the ARC.
Thank you so much to Wild Rabbit LLC and NetGalley for sending me this eARC to review!!
What captured me initially about this book was the description of it being a beauty and beast retelling bc they’re one of my faves!
The artwork throughout this book is beautiful!! I love the way Abbey writes, the dark fantasy, description of the creatures and world building was easy to follow and different from fantasies I’ve read. I loved seeing the relationship build between Mia and Ash 🥹
I love a strong and handsome mmc who would do anything for the fmc and Ash did not disappoint! I genuinely wish I had a Naheli too 😍
I loved how empathetic Mia is and her courage, awareness and determination to fight for what she believes is right regardless of her upbringing stood out to me! Also, her realisation at the end of chapter 34 Eeeeek!! Love when this happens!! One of my fav tropes!
I’m so excited for the next book with Nera and her story 😍 overall I really enjoyed this and I know that Abbey Fox will be an author I look forward to reading in future.

Mia’s soul becomes owned by Ash, the beast Fae King after looking into his eyes- in order to get her freedom, she must undo a curse on him.
Such an amazing beauty and the beast retelling, the best one I’ve read so far!
This story was SO GOOD! Start to finish, it was gripping, mysterious, atmospheric and dark- filled with tension, spice, curses, spells, magic - ALL THE THINGS!
THE perfect fall fantasy to read, I am so in love and so sad that it is over 😭 Book 2 is set up to be about another character- which I’m excited for, but I’ll never get over Mia and Ash ❤️🔥
Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairytales and anything gothic makes my little black heart sing so I absolutely loved this gothic take on this story.
The worldbuilding and the depiction of the curse were amazing! The enemies to lovers aspect created this delicious tension and banter between Ash and Mia! And his nickname for her had me melting and folding like a lawn chair!
I love found family and Nera definitely earned her spot as one of my favorite side characters. Her character and the relationship she has with both Ash and Mia was so much fun! I can't wait for the next standalone book in this series where we'll dive deeper into her story!
I LOVE Beauty and the Beast retellings and I’ve read quite a few, and this one was for sure one of my favorites!!! 😍 the eerie gothic atmosphere is so captivating and vivid! Also he calls her “monster” which I adore hihihi 🥹
Mia is a librarian who secretly practices magic, searching through forbidden grimoires to protect herself and her sister after a beast killed their father. But when a winged beast breaks through the veil that protects the city from the outside beasts in the forest, and Mia fights back, she ends up captured and taken beyond the veil… only to discover he’s more than just a beast.😈🖤
What you can expect: 🖤enemies to lovers 🖤fae & beasts 🖤slow burn romance 🖤forced proximity 🖤found family 🖤fated mates 🖤touch her and 💀
3.5⭐️ Lots of action and mystery although a few of the twists were predictable and the plot did feel scattered at times. I really enjoyed the four illustrations of Ash and Mia included throughout the book! They were beautiful and I wish more authors did this 💕
Thank you NetGalley and Abbey Fox for the opportunity to read this ARC. When I heard this was a Beauty and the Beast re-telling I was intrigued. With a gothic fantasy setting, an intense slow burn enemies to lovers plot - I honestly couldn’t put this down.
I adored the world building, the development of magic, how the lore was explained - everything for me was flawless. I loved the character development, and the twists that came with it - it really kept me on my toes.
I feel the writing was paced well, and kept me interested throughout - the weaving of the prophecies into the writing, discovery of magic and learning magic - the riddle of unraveling a curse kept me gripped, and the banter and relationships that develop between the characters added a lightness to the story that I really enjoyed.
I know these are a series of standalone stories, and I’m excited for the next installment, however I would love to read more about Ash and his little Monster… for me this was a 5 star read, I really hope to read more of Abbey’s work in future!
Words to describe this book and how I imagined the world⬇️
( Moody, spooky, magical, heartfelt and thrilling)
First off I want to say this book hooked me at 20% and I couldn’t stop reading !! Not that I wasn’t interested in the beginning but I was still trying to wrap my head around the world and characters which sometimes is hard for me but as soon as it clicked and the story started to unfold it was easy to understand and exciting all the way till the end! I can’t stop smiling and thinking about these characters, I first thought the story would feel predictable since it’s a retelling but that’s not the case. ALSO WE GET CHARACTER ART THROUGHOUT THE BOOK!! I think more books should do this because it’s exciting to see the characters from the authors point of view all throughout the story! I have placed an ordered on Amazon to get a physical copy of this book because I have to have it on my shelves! I can’t wait to read more form this author and see what worlds and stories come from it 🥀🖤
