Ethiopia and the Bible

Rate this book
Traditionally, Ethiopia has formed a bridge between civilizations, with Jerusalem as vital as Askum in the national consciousness of the Ethiopians. In this volume, Ullendorff investigates the relationship of Ethiopia to the Bible. He considers the historical background, translations of the Bible into Ethiopian languages, and the impact of the Old Testament, which goes beyond anything experienced in the other Oriental Christian Churches.

It is a highly specialized book that is informative for people interested in threads of Biblical tradition that are not typically considered in the West. It is the formation of non-European Christianity.

The biggest difficulty is the author feels no need to give English translations of quotes from French, German, or Italian. He translates the quotes from the ancient Ethiopian dialects, but not the different European languages. That prevented me from getting as much out of the book as I otherwise would have.
