“Deadly Clues” is a sharp, fast-paced, and thoroughly gripping crime thriller that introduces readers to one of the most refreshing new detectives in contemporary Indian fiction — Victor Chatterjee. A chemistry instructor by profession but an investigator by instinct, Victor is intelligent, observant, and calm under pressure, making him a standout protagonist in a genre filled with larger-than-life detectives.

This collection of five compelling and cleverly constructed mysteries immediately pulls readers into a world where every detail matters and every case is a puzzle waiting to be decoded.

Victor’s investigative style is one of the book’s greatest strengths. He sees patterns where others see chaos, and his keen, almost scientific attention to detail gives these stories a distinctive flair. His partnership with his younger brother Rik, witty and energetic, adds warmth and humour to the tension, making their dynamic both endearing and effective.

Mukherjee’s storytelling is crisp, immersive, and meticulously plotted. The pacing is quick without feeling rushed, ensuring that every chapter draws you deeper into the web of clues, motives, and unexpected revelations. The mysteries are neither predictable nor outlandishly complex — just wonderfully crafted puzzles that keep you turning pages late into the night.

Fans of offbeat detectives, classic whodunits, and modern Indian crime fiction will find plenty to love here. The blend of sharp intellect, emotional depth, and gripping suspense makes “Deadly Clues” a standout addition to the genre.

It was such a gripping thriller. Lucid writing and perfect pacing, thrilling atmosphere and the theme of the book and twists and turns made this a really great reading experience for me.
I really loved Detective Victor, he was so articulate with his thoughts and sincere in his work. Loved his thought process, his ability to read between the lines and determination to solve the cases. His brother Rik was so witty, I loved him in every scene. They were unfazed by the danger and were ready to go to the heights to solve the cases. It's a short book and I finished it in one day, at points I didn't even see the twists coming in most of the cases and I really liked how Victor solved them with precision even in the scenes when someone might start the obvious. Every page was making me more and more anticipated and I was so excited to know what would happen next.
It has five different stories and I loved reading them all. If you're looking for a fast-paced and quick thriller with a sharp-minded detective, I highly recommend this one to you.

• Most crime novels rely on fast-paced action, but Deadly Clues gives us something quieter and more thoughtful. Detective Victor isn’t a superhero he’s a sharp, wounded man who solves cases with observation, instinct, and quiet persistence.

• The case begins with the murder of a well-known journalist. Victor, drawn out of the shadows, takes it on. What appears to be a straightforward homicide soon leads into something darker a web of power, corruption, and betrayal.

• What really sets this book apart is its realism. Victor doesn’t use gadgets or force. He reads people. He notices what’s missing, listens to what isn’t said, and slowly pulls the truth into the light.

• The setting modern Kolkata is vivid and atmospheric. You can almost hear the rain and feel the tension in every cramped alley and interrogation room. The writing is simple and cinematic, making it easy to follow without oversimplifying the plot.

• The twists don’t feel forced. When the final reveal comes, it’s surprising but completely believable because all the clues were there if you were paying attention.

Pacing & Flow – 4/5
Mystery & Logic – 4/5
Writing Style – 4/5
Character Depth – 4/5
Overall Value – 4/5

Final Thoughts:
Deadly Clues is not trying to be flashy. It’s trying to be clever, human, and honest and it succeeds. If you enjoy detective stories where the investigator is as interesting as the case itself, this book delivers.

Victor’s world feels like a real place, full of flawed people and half-truths, where justice isn’t always easy or clean. It reminded me a little of P.D. James or Michael Connelly writers who let their characters do the heavy lifting.

And the best part? You walk away hoping there will be more books with Victor. Because he’s not just solving crimes he’s healing, piece by piece, along the way.

From the very first chapter the story gripped me like a tightening fist and I could not look away. Deadly Clues is the kind of thriller that sinks its hooks in early and drags you breathless through a maze of danger, deception, and revelations.

Detective Victor Chatterjee is unforgettable. He carries the cool precision of Hercule Poirot yet the relentless drive of Jack Reacher. He is not loud, not flashy, but razor sharp in thought and unshakable in focus. His younger brother Rik is a perfect counterpoint, witty and impulsive, injecting moments of warmth and humor into the tension. Together, they light up the page, their bond making the chase feel all the more human.

The cases are brutal and brilliant. An archer who pierces truth itself by aiming at the eye. A casual game of drinking that spirals into a sinister act. An old man who wakes blind without reason. Each case had me leaning forward, convinced I had solved it, only to be stunned when Victor unveiled a truth I had never seen coming. My pulse quickened with every turn, and I found myself reading long past midnight, unable to let go.

The writing is taut, the pacing relentless, and the atmosphere electric with menace. Kolkata feels alive in these pages, its alleys, rains, and silences turning into characters of their own.

Fans of James Patterson and Lee Child will find everything they crave here ~ speed, suspense, and a detective whose mind cuts sharper than any weapon. Deadly Clues does not just tell a story, it leaves you staring into the shadows, wondering what truth might be hiding in plain sight.

“𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙣𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙡.”

•A Gripping Crime Thriller, Protagonist Victor Chatterjee is a sharp minded detective with a love for logic and forensic science. With his brother Rik by his side, they take on strange cases no one else can solve, where every clue counts and every second matters.

•Victor is a cool and composed main character, he's calm, intelligent, focused and trained in both martial arts and forensic science. His younger brother Rik is more playful, sharp-witted and full of curiousness. Together, they make a great team.

•The writing is simple and easy to follow. There’s no unnecessary fluff or confusion jumps, a light and clean storytelling, it’s a sharp, engaging and refreshingly simple detective read that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys solving mysteries without getting lost in overly complex plots. Each case starts with suspense and ends with a satisfying twist. The clues are presented fairly, so readers can try guessing too. This is the kind of book that you can finish in one sitting. It’s like solving puzzles with two brothers who are complete opposites but make a great team. It's also perfect for readers who enjoy mysteries but don’t want a very heavy or dark storyline. The cases are short, snappy and satisfying, with logical solutions. Victor is a detective you’d want to follow in a series!

This book surprised me with how emotionally engaging it was. Even though it’s a crime thriller, it has depth.

Victor isn’t just a brilliant detective—he’s also a caring brother and a thoughtful person. His relationship with Rik adds warmth to the story.

Some of the cases really touched me, especially the one involving the innocent man who dies during a friendly game. It shows how small mistakes or lies can lead to big tragedies.

The writing is so descriptive, I could picture the characters and scenes like a movie.

The emotional impact of the mysteries stayed with me even after I finished the book. It’s more than just a thrilling read—it’s a story that makes you feel.

I’d recommend this to anyone who likes books with both suspense and heart.

Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee is a compelling and multilayered entry into the world of Indian detective fiction, introducing us to Victor Chatterjee, a detective who carries the weight of reason, morality, and psychological insight with remarkable subtlety. Victor is not a caricatured genius nor a jaded cynic; he is a young, brilliant mind grounded in Indian socio-cultural realities, drawing comparisons not only to the methodical Hercule Poirot and the insightful Byomkesh Bakshi but also to the moral grey zones of detectives like Mare Sheehan or Saga Norén. The novel is structured around three interconnected cases that unfold with cinematic elegance and literary grace: a killer who targets victims with arrows to the eye, a drinking game that spirals into the death of an innocent, and an old man who mysteriously loses his eyesight overnight. These cases are not standalone; they reflect deeper themes—of voyeurism, collective guilt, trauma, and the modern erosion of conscience. The arrow to the eye is particularly symbolic—targeting not the heart but the organ of sight, suggesting a symbolic attack on truth, perception, and conscience. Mukherjee’s choice of such a weapon immediately transports readers into a world where mythology, history, and crime converge. The allusions are rich—reminding one of Arjuna’s pinpoint vision in the Mahabharata, or William Tell’s bow, or even the cold precision of the Zodiac Killer. But this isn’t myth-making—it’s myth-deconstructing. Victor and his younger brother Rik, who provides both comic relief and digital savviness, form an investigative duo that is both relatable and effective. Rik, with his Reddit-level theories and tech tools, represents the Gen Z lens of truth-seeking—data-driven, skeptical, and fast-paced—while Victor remains grounded in psychology, interviews, and gut instincts, reminding readers of an analogue past unwilling to be erased.
Mukherjee plays masterfully with red herrings, constructing narrative labyrinths that tease the reader into false conclusions. In the case of the drinking game gone wrong, what begins as a boys-will-be-boys moment of frivolity evolves into a chilling examination of privilege, masculinity, and guilt. It is here that Mukherjee’s social commentary becomes piercing. The victim is not a victim by accident; the death is not an anomaly, but the result of a social structure that protects the privileged and silences the weak. There are echoes of real-life Indian cases—of hostel ragging, toxic hierarchies, and the impunity with which some navigate the justice system. The motif of silence—people who saw but chose not to speak—is haunting. The third case, involving an old man who inexplicably goes blind, is perhaps the most philosophical. It is not about medical science, but about metaphysical weight. What did he see that caused his soul to shut down? The blindness here is not illness but guilt manifested physically—like Oedipus blinding himself after discovering the horrors he unknowingly committed. The parallels to Sophocles and even Saramago’s Blindness are subtle but unmistakable. Victor, in decoding this man's truth, becomes a therapist as much as a detective. He listens more than he questions; he reads between the pauses.

The narrative is rich with literary and cinematic resonance. From Hitchcock’s voyeuristic thrillers to the postmodern moral ambiguity of Memories of Murder or Zodiac, Mukherjee’s inspirations are clear, but they never overwhelm the originality of his voice. His writing is taut, evocative, and quietly lyrical. In several places, the prose pauses not for action, but for insight—a widow remembering a half-sent letter, a child describing his father's shame, or Victor contemplating whether justice is an endpoint or merely a process. There’s a sequence where Victor remarks, “Truth does not bring closure. It only removes illusion.” In that one line, Mukherjee encapsulates the entire modern detective ethic—one that does not offer catharsis, but clarity. The settings, too, are deeply rooted in contemporary India—residences with high walls and CCTV cameras, slums where stories are currency, universities buzzing with suppressed scandals, and cafes where confessions occur beneath pop music. Mukherjee isn’t afraid to reflect the country’s contradictions—its rapid digitisation coexisting with age-old caste and class inequalities, its obsession with Western crime thrillers juxtaposed against its blind spots to everyday injustices. Rik’s references to Reddit, Netflix shows, and social media-driven morality serve as commentary on how crime and guilt are now consumed in the age of virality and opinion polls.

What sets Deadly Clues apart from the majority of Indian thrillers is its refusal to offer simplistic resolutions. The killer with arrows is eventually found—but their motives stretch back decades, rooted in humiliation, betrayal, and a society that chooses not to see. The drinking game death may see one person behind bars, but the rot lies in the system that allowed it to happen. And the blind man’s story does not end with diagnosis or cure—it ends with acknowledgment, with the heavy stillness of an old man who can finally sleep, if not forgive himself. Victor is left not with victory but with understanding. And that, perhaps, is the most powerful legacy a detective can offer. Mukherjee also dares to raise questions about justice itself. Is legal punishment the only form of justice? Does the law suffice when morality has collapsed? What of psychological retribution—sleeplessness, isolation, the gnawing of guilt? These are questions that place Deadly Clues in the realm of ethical literature, more than just crime fiction. Like Dostoevsky’s Raskolnikov, some of Mukherjee’s characters are punished not by the law, but by their own conscience. In this sense, the book becomes not only a search for culprits but a meditation on accountability in the age of deflection.

Victor Chatterjee emerges as a character with immense franchise potential, but more importantly, with emotional and intellectual depth. He isn’t quirky for the sake of being different, nor emotionally vacant like so many damaged detectives. He is thoughtful, principled, and empathetic. His chemistry with Rik is organic; their arguments and laughter ground the story in something deeply human. Rik’s tech-wit and Victor’s emotional intelligence represent two sides of the modern mind—logic and intuition, analysis and empathy. Amritendu Mukherjee’s achievement lies in crafting not only a gripping story but also a world that feels authentic, populated by characters who could exist in our cities, our memories, and our headlines. He uses crime not just as plot, but as metaphor—cracking open the fissures of society, class, gender, and guilt. The book subtly critiques everything from masculinity to justice, voyeurism to privilege, without ever turning preachy. It is as enjoyable for a lover of fast-paced thrillers as it is for a student of literature, ethics, or law.

For readers familiar with the Western crime canon, Deadly Clues is a delightful and meaningful addition—bringing Indian reality into a genre that often remains too white and too male. For those unfamiliar with detective fiction, this book is a potent gateway: you’ll not only stay up late turning the pages, but you’ll also wake up thinking about the choices we make, the truths we hide, and the eyes we choose to close. In a literary climate crowded with formulaic thrillers and mindless twists, Amritendu Mukherjee delivers a rare gem—intelligent, emotional, grounded, and haunting. Deadly Clues is not merely a book to be read, but one to be remembered, re-read, and reckoned with.

Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee is such a gripping detective novel with five different stories packed with suspense and twists.

Victor Chatterjee, a young detective, never gives up until he uncovers the truth, even when everything seems like a dead end. His younger brother Rik joins him through all the risks as they work together to solve mysterious deaths.

Vic's brilliant knack for uncovering the truth behind every mystery, and the way the author has portrayed his character, truly deserves appreciation.

If you enjoy reading Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie books then definitely you'll enjoy this one. It’s a quick read but keeps you hooked till the very end. The writing is engaging and keeps the suspense alive throughout.

It’s been a while since I picked up a detective novel, and this one didn’t disappoint. A must read !

The story revolves around two brothers—Victor (Vic) and Ritwik (Rik)—a dynamic sibling duo with a compelling bond. Vic, the elder brother, is portrayed as a gifted chemistry student with a sharp intellect and extraordinary detective skills. Rik, his younger brother, plays the role of a loyal companion, eager to support and learn from his elder sibling. Together, they form an intriguing detective team, solving mysteries that come their way.

Deadly Clues presents five standalone cases, each centred on a unique modus operandi:

The first story introduces Rik’s friend Kiran and his troubled family, who find themselves in a frightening situation with bloodstains appearing mysteriously. Rather than involving the police, they seek help from Vic. His ability to piece together subtle clues and unravel the mystery is impressive.

The second case deals with the brutal murder of Harinath. A new inspector, Avay, requests Vic's assistance. The twist at the end is unexpected, and Vic’s analytical approach shines through here.

In the third story, what starts as a celebratory housewarming party with games among friends ends in tragedy when one of them, Bhaskar, is found dead. The investigation led by Vic is cleverly executed, showcasing his brilliance once again.

The fourth tale involves Atul Mitra, who is suddenly attacked and left blind. There are many clues in this story, such as the sound of a whistle and buried gold coins in a garden. Vic’s solution to the mystery will surprise the readers.

The final case introduces a series of murders mimicking an unsolved string of killings from 15 years ago. While the police are left baffled, Vic gradually connects the dots, leading to a satisfying resolution.

The writing style is engaging, and the narration flows effortlessly, making it a fast-paced and enjoyable read. The simple language is especially suitable for beginners, and the storytelling is compelling. The author’s debut effort shows promise—his storytelling is engaging and likely to hold readers' attention throughout.

Now, coming to the rating, I would give this book three stars. Why?

While the writing is easy to follow and the pace is brisk, making it ideal for new readers or those just beginning to explore thrillers, as an avid reader of the genre, I found the suspense too predictable. In most stories, I could identify the culprit quite early on. It is not necessarily a flaw for all readers, but for someone familiar with complex thrillers, it does take away some of the intrigue.

Another point I’d like to share—while Vic is undeniably a gifted character, at times his capabilities felt a bit exaggerated, especially in the earlier stories. For instance, portraying a 23-year-old college student solving complex cases with his 14-year-old brother without any parental involvement felt a bit implausible. In contrast, in the final story where Vic is portrayed as a professor, his actions felt more age-appropriate and believable. It might have added to the realism had Vic been portrayed as older from the start, with a brief background on his younger years.

Additionally, to highlight Vic’s brilliance, other characters—particularly the police and older adults—were sometimes portrayed as lacking basic reasoning, which made parts of the narrative feel less balanced.

That said, I still found the stories engaging and enjoyed the book overall. It held my interest, and even though I anticipated some twists, the journey remained entertaining.

I would gladly recommend Deadly Clues to new readers or anyone beginning their journey into mystery and detective fiction—it’s accessible, entertaining, and doesn’t overwhelm with complexity. More seasoned readers may notice a few loopholes, but there’s still plenty to appreciate. A commendable debut effort that shows promise for the author’s future works.

When I first picked up Deadly Clues, I was immediately drawn into the world of Detective Victor Chatterjee and his younger brother Rik. From the razor‑sharp prose to the atmospheric Kolkata backdrop, the opening pages promised a cerebral and emotionally resonant ride. I could feel the author’s enthusiasm for classic detective work seeping through every line, reminding me of why I fell in love with mysteries in the first place.

Plot and Premise: Ingenious Mysteries Unfold
Deadly Clues presents five standalone cases, each built around an unusual modus operandi—a killer who shoots arrows into victims’ eyes, a twisted drinking‑game assassination, and a man inexplicably going blind overnight, to name a few. I found the setups both macabre and intellectually stimulating. Each mystery unfolded with methodical precision, allowing me to follow Victor’s deductive leaps while still being surprised by the twists. The pacing was expertly calibrated: just when I thought I’d spotted the culprit, Mukherjee would pull the rug out from under me.

Character Dynamics: Brothers in Arms
What truly elevates this collection for me is the relationship between Victor and Rik. Victor’s calm, almost clinical dissection of clues contrasts beautifully with Rik’s passionate eagerness. I loved how Mukherjee injected warmth into their partnership—Rik’s admiration sometimes tips into frustration, and Victor’s patience sometimes wears thin. I found myself smiling at their banter and invested in Rik’s personal growth as he learns to carve out his own identity beside a celebrated detective.

Writing Style: Elegant and Accessible
Mukherjee’s writing struck the perfect balance between sophistication and readability. I appreciated his lean descriptions—nothing felt overwritten, yet every setting glowed with enough detail to transport me to gleaming train stations and dimly lit alleyways of Kolkata. His dialogue felt natural, occasionally tinged with dry humor that lightened the darker moments. As a reader who sometimes struggles through overly verbose thrillers, I was grateful for prose that moved me along the narrative without sacrificing depth.

Pacing and Suspense: A Relentless Thrust Forward
From the first arrow striking its mark to the climactic unmasking of each villain, the book maintains a brisk momentum. I rarely found myself checking my watch or skimming sections—Mukherjee’s plotting kept me turning pages late into the night. Even the quieter investigative moments brimmed with tension, as small revelations led to larger, unexpected consequences. In my experience, sustaining that level of suspense across five distinct tales is no small feat.

Themes and Emotional Resonance: More Than Just Puzzles
Beneath the surface puzzles, Deadly Clues explores themes of justice, loyalty, and the cost of obsession. I was particularly moved by episodes that touched on personal loss or societal pressures, which reminded me that detective work isn’t merely an intellectual exercise but a profoundly human endeavor. The emotional stakes—whether for the victims’ families or for Rik’s sense of self—gave each story an added layer of poignancy.

Conclusion: A Must‑Read for Mystery Lovers
Overall, I found Deadly Clues to be a thoroughly enjoyable and intellectually satisfying read. Mukherjee’s crisp prose, ingenious plotting, and the endearing bond between Victor and Rik make this book a standout for fans of smart thrillers. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who relishes a well‑crafted mystery and appreciates characters who feel as real as the crimes they solve.

Fancy seeing Sherlock in Kolkata? Applying his elegant art of deduction to the cases of distressed citizens? A desi Sherlock helping Bhadralok in Bengal. A terrific idea executed really well by Amritendu Mukherjee. Or course the art of deduction doesn't solely belong to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but his creation has become so staggeringly huge that every detective, however unique, is compared to a few who have set the benchmark.

Vicotr Mukherjee a 23 year old man (23 and undeniably handsome, as described by the author) is a masters student in chemistry. Mukherjee writes about him: "But what makes Vik truly remarkable are his sharp eyes, which seem to look straight into a person’s soul. He doesn’t study much, yet he’s always the topper in his class, thanks to his excellent memory and intelligence. While most people his age party, drink and hang out with their girlfriends, Vik stays away from all that. Instead, he spends his time practising martial arts, reading his favourite books on forensic science and criminology, or developing new skills. His friends call him unsocial and dull, but I know better. Vik’s analytical skills and keen observation make him fascinating."

Vic doesn't like reading newspapers so Rik reads for him and brings him stories that may be worth his attention. Playing a detective is his side hustle. But this might as well become his main thing since after a crime, he is called upon by his little brother's friend's family. Someone has been dousing blood on them. A thug has threatened the family with the theft of a gem. Soon a murder occurs. Or is it a murder because the body has gone missing. Amidst all this hulllabaloo, Asiatic lions of Gir also feature somehow. How? Well I am not going to tell you everything. Read the story to find out more.

A mystery is really not a mystery if there is no crime in it. And here we have crimes galore. Grievous injury (dousing of blood: it could be infected), coercion and threat, attempt to murder, abduction and many more. Mukherjee hasn't left a stone unturned in bringing a regular barrage of twists to his story. And what delicious and delightful twists they are.

The storytelling is engaging and the writing style skilful. The characters feel real and full bodied, not lifeless and cardboardish. The reader feels helpless as there is only one goal in the present and now: to finish the book. Everything else comes later. Read it now.

📖Book : DEADLY CLUES
✒️Author : AMRITENDU MUKHERJEE
🌟 Rating: 5/5
✒️ Review by : Sourashmi (@sourashmi_s_lens)
📚 Theme : Detective /Thriller Book

REVIEW :

Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee is a well-curated, addicting thriller with 5 stories/cases that have a gripping storyline . Victor Chatterjee (Vik) , a young calm, composed , sharp and smart 23yr old detective who unravels chilling deadly cases with his younger brother Ritwick Chatterjee (Rik) who narrated the stories or cases with humour , innocence and a lot of playfulness which is expected from a 8yr old who is extremely curious.
The book contains a strong aroma of Kolkata and Bengali culture making it feel rooted yet modern . This book acts as a Gen-Z version of Sherlock Holmes , Feluda, Satyaneshi Byomkesh Bakshi where the main protagonist of the story outsmarts the police with his intellect and instincts . The concept of the book was refreshing. The psychological depth of the cases which gives us insights about who did it and their mental state reflecting on why they did it . The aspects were really interesting but if you're into deep psychological thrillers then you might get a little bit disappointed as they are well executed surface level ones.

DETAILS OF THE STORIES / CASES :--

1)The Missing Sapphire & Animal Poaching – mysterious disappearance of a rare blue sapphire.
2) The Death of an Elderly Man – a seemingly ordinary death with hidden layers.
3) A Friend’s Tragic End – Vik’s friend dies at a get-together, entangled in a love triangle.
4) Blindness Overnight – an old man mysteriously loses his sight, tied to a historical jewel.
5) The Arrow Killer – a chilling case of a murderer targeting women with arrows.

WRITING STYLE:--
The author has an easy , engaging and suspenful style of writing which does justice to the plotline of the bookand keeps the readers invested from the start till the end. The gripping storyline keeps the readers entertained and there was honestly not a single dull moment throught the whole book . The balance of narrative , dialogue and plot was even throughout the book . The pace of the book is evenly distributed and each of the stories doesn't drag and suspense is well-maintained.

MY THOUGHTS:---
As someone who have only read classic thrillers like that of Sherlick Holmes and Watson , Agatha Christy , Feluda and Topshe , Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit Bandopadhyay . As I have always relied on classics I didn't expect much but this book was amazing and I wasn't disappointed a bit throughout the whole storyline .

COLLAB NOTE :
Thank you so much Amritendu for trusting me with your beautiful work. It was an honour to read and review it 🍀✨️

📘Deadly Clues: Detective Victor Rises | A Gripping Crime Thriller by Amritendu Mukherjee

What if your sharpest weapon was your mind—and your biggest enemy, the truth itself?

From the very first page, Deadly Clues had me hooked. A killer who shoots arrows into victims’ eyes, a drinking game that ends in a mysterious death, and an old man who loses his vision overnight… each case more chilling than the last. And at the center of it all is Detective Victor Chatterjee—cool-headed, observant, and relentless in his pursuit of justice.

Victor isn’t the brooding, broken detective we’ve come to expect. He’s sharp, focused, and grounded, with just the right amount of complexity. Paired with his younger brother Rik—quick-witted and full of life—they make a dynamic duo that keeps the story moving with energy and intrigue.

What I loved most is how Amritendu Mukherjee crafts each case with precision. Nothing feels far-fetched; the clues are planted subtly, the reveals are satisfying, and the danger always feels real. There’s a quiet tension running through the narrative, the kind that keeps you turning pages long past midnight.

The writing is crisp and cinematic, with scenes that play out like a crime drama in your mind. It’s grounded in a modern Indian setting, which makes it even more relatable and immersive for desi readers. Mukherjee’s background in screenwriting shines through, giving the book a very visual, almost episodic feel—perfect for fans of detective fiction and crime series.

This book isn’t just about solving murders. It’s about reading between the lines, questioning the obvious, and understanding the psychology of crime. If you’re someone who loves stories where brains win over brawn, this one’s for you.
🎯 Final Verdict:
A fast-paced, intelligently written thriller with a memorable detective, intriguing cases, and twists that don’t try too hard—they just work. I’ll definitely be watching out for the next Victor Chatterjee mystery!

A Brilliant New Voice in Indian Detective Fiction — Meet Vik Chatterjee

I devoured this book overnight and came away grinning like a lifelong mystery fan who’s just found a new favourite sleuth. After Byomkesh, Vik feels like our detective — smart, charismatic, and distinctively Indian, yet never a copy of Sherlock Holmes or Poirot. Amritendu’s writing gives Vik a personality so strong that you stop comparing and simply see Vik.

I especially loved Rik, the slightly bewildered companion who often feels like a stand-in for the reader. I missed him in the stories where he wasn’t present! The narrative choice to present cases from different stages of Vik’s life — instead of a simple, chronological case-by-case structure — keeps things fresh and inventive.

Another strength is characterisation. Even with a large supporting cast, no two people sound alike; you can often tell who’s speaking just by their dialogue. The action scenes are also surprisingly easy to follow — I usually skim fictional fights, but here they’re vivid and cinematic without being confusing.

The mysteries themselves are clever and layered. As a longtime murder-mystery reader, I cracked the “whodunit” in only two of the cases — but the why and how still surprised me every time. That balance between fair-play clues and unexpected solutions is the mark of a skilled mystery writer. My favourite case was “One Eye, One Shot” (even though it’s technically not a murder!). And the final story’s locked-room twist felt refreshingly original.

If I had one tiny nitpick, it’s that the “aha” reveal in the last case was a bit dense — I had to reread to fully grasp the solution, so the impact softened a little. But the emotional final note (“thank you”) was beautiful and more than made up for it.

Overall, Deadly Clues is a five-star read for me — smart yet highly readable, with simple, clear prose that lets you focus on the puzzle instead of wading through ornate language. I’d love to see Vik star in a full-length novel someday, and I sincerely hope this series gets the wider recognition it deserves.

If you enjoy clever mysteries, complex yet fair puzzles, and a fresh Indian detective you can truly root for, this book is a must-read.

Amritendu Mukherjee's Deadly Clues brings together five exciting detective stories led by the Chatterjee brothers-Victor Chatterjee, the calm, observant mind with an instinct for truth, and Ritwik Chatterjee, his spirited younger brother whose narration brings warmth and energy to their adventures. Vic is analytical sleuth, trained in martial arts and a background in chemistry; Rik doubles as narrator and confidant. The setup feels relatable yet fresh, with a distinctly Indian sensibility running through each mystery set in Kolkata.
Among the cases, One Eye, One Shot and A Deadly Quest for Justice stood out for me. Both move beyond the mechanics of crime-solving to to explore the human motives behind crime. There’s an unexpected tenderness in how he handles guilt, loss, and redemption, which makes these two stories leave you with a quiet smile. The writing is simple and polished, never trying too hard to sound clever. The stories are well-structured and neatly proofread, which helps the pace flow easily. The bond between Vic and Rik feels genuine — their camaraderie, teasing, and quiet understanding add warmth amid the logic and deduction. It’s easy to imagine them growing into familiar literary companions over time. The opening story, Where It All Began, introduces Victor and Ritwik Chatterjee through an eerie case of mysterious bloodstains haunting a friend’s home — a perfect start that blends logic with unease. The Deadly Gambit shifts tone to a housewarming party gone wrong, where a harmless drinking game turns fatal, exposing envy and hidden grudges. In What Lies Beyond, a man’s sudden blindness sparks a taut, emotionally charged investigation that questions trust and guilt. Together, these stories reveal Mukherjee’s skill in turning ordinary settings into spaces of quiet menace and unexpected humanity.A few conclusions might feel too neat, and some motives could have been explored further, yet the sincerity of the storytelling holds steady throughout.

Deadly Clues is clever without being showy, emotional without being sentimental-a promising, homegrown detective collection that values compassion as much as intellect.

Book Review – Deadly Clues: Detective Victor Rises by Amritendu Mukherjee

Amritendu Mukherjee’s Deadly Clues is a razor-sharp, fast-paced compilation of a quintet of enjoyable mysteries that introduces you to one Victor ‘Vik’ Chatterjee – chemist by day, martial artist by night, and detective for hire when circumstances present. Narrated in part by his goofy younger brother Rik, these stories provide an enjoyable menu of cerebral deduction, dry humour, and suspense.

From the home with blood-spattered walls threatening a friend's family, to an ominous ‘game night’ gone wrong, to a man who awoke blind overnight, each case feels fresh and well thought. Mukherjee distributes clues effectively, allowing the reader to follow along with Victor's clues and think they solved it before reversing it with clever and surprising plot twists. The most impressive part of the book, however, isn’t the ingenious plotting, but the relationship between the brothers – Victor's cool calculated manner working in perfect juxtaposition with Rik’s enthusiasm and impatience.

What adds an extra bonus to this collection, is the added incentive of the vivid Kolkata location. The streets rich with chaos and movement, the back alleyways, and the charged atmosphere are woven together adding richness to the experience without slowing down the pace. Mukherjee has a sharp and filmic writing style, and I appreciated the investigative sequences that felt seamless and believable. No relying on gimmicks, the tension arrived through circumstance, effective clue placement, and the psychology of the crime.

Deadly Clues is more than just a whodunit story; it is about loyalty, moral issues and cost of justice. Lovely for readers of smart, character driven detective stories, it will have you staying up late, promising yourself “one more case”.

A compelling launch to what will be a fantastic detective series.

Book Review | Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee

Deadly Clues pulls you in slowly, the way a quiet mystery should. Nothing feels rushed, nothing feels forced , it’s like the story allows you to settle in first before it starts revealing its layers. And that's what I really liked about it. The book has this steady pace where every chapter gives you something to think about, without overwhelming you.

Detective Victor is the heart of the story. He’s not written like a superhero or someone who knows everything. He feels human , with doubts, with emotions, with moments where he stops and thinks before moving forward. You start to feel connected to him because he isn’t perfect, he’s just someone trying to do his job while dealing with his own inner weight. That makes his journey more meaningful than the mystery itself.

What surprised me is how the book balances darkness with calmness. The case is serious, the clues are scattered, the atmosphere is heavy at times , but the writing stays clear and gentle. Even the intense moments feel readable and real. You don’t get lost in complicated things; instead, the book guides you naturally through every turn.

Another thing I enjoyed is how every clue feels like a small step into Victor’s mind. You’re not just following a case; you’re watching how he handles pressure, how he notices small details, how he carries the responsibility of finding the truth. It made me appreciate the character even more.

By the time I reached the ending, it wasn’t just the mystery that stayed with me. It was Victor himself , his patience, his quiet strength, and the way he rises through situations that could easily break someone. The book shows that even in a world full of danger and confusion, a person can still hold on to clarity.

Overall, Deadly Clues felt like a clean, absorbing mystery with a surprisingly emotional core. It reminds you that detectives aren’t just solving crimes , they’re solving parts of themselves too.

My interest in murder mystery thrillers is no surprise. But this book, is by far my favourite read!

The story is about 2 brothers Victor and Ritwik called Vic and Rik. A normal brother duo, where Vic is an elder brother and Rik is a younger brother who admires and looks starry eyed to his brother.
Vic is an intelligent chemistry student who has got an outstanding detective skills and Rik is an ever supporting partner, which makes them a perfect detective duo.
As for cases? Then these brothers don't find cases rather than cases find them!

This book compiled the 5 different stories, narrating the 5 cases that these Vic-Rik duo solves with their sharp brains, mental strength, patience and perfect pairing.

The author blew my mind with his imaginative plays, compelling storytelling, detailed description of crimes and scenes followed by piece by piece revelations of truth. Also, the author has kept it engaging and interesting not only with brilliant plotting but also with wit and humour sprinkled to add a flavour.

Once I started, I was hardly able to put it down and my eyes refused to miss even a single word.

One thing that I would like to highlight is the author's choice of including young minds as detectives which according to me is inspiring and have the potential of feeding more curious minds giving their brains a positive push and edge.

Areas of Strength:
• New storyline
• Great plots
• Engaging narrative
• Descriptive yet fast paced
• Mindfully picked, thought and executed.

'Deadly Clues' is a collection of compelling stories that take readers on to an adventure with Vic-Rik detective brothers duo where they solve mind boggling cases showing their grasping skills in different situations, keen eyes for unusual hidden from the sight clues and determination to find the truth behind farce plots. A truly inspiring and captivating thriller.

Wow, what a book! This is my first word when I complete the book. The book comprises five different stories and mysteries solved by our Detective Vik along with his younger brother, Rik.

The first story is about Rik’s friend Kiran and his family. Clue is about a family that is threatened by scattered blood all around. The family decided to find a detective who can help them sort out this issue before taking it to the police. How Vik connects the dots and finds the person behind it.

The second story is about Harinath's brutal death with a suspect. Here the newly arrived inspector Avay seeks Vik’s support to solve the case. Here, Vik’s mastermind plays a vital role in solving the case, and also the ending of it is unexpected.

The third story is about how a fun game turned into a tragedy and left one dead. Here, a group of friends are gathered together to attend a housewarming and decide to play a game. When everybody was busy playing games, having fun, and partying, a sudden scream made everybody shocked, and Bhaskar was found dead in the bathroom. Vik's way of solving this case is mind-blowing.

The fourth story is about Atul Mitra's sudden attack, and he lost his eyesight completely. Vik was left with clues like the whistle sound and that gold coins are buried in the garden. What happened and how Vik solved the case is beyond your expectations.

Fifth and the final one is about continuous murder by following the copycat method of 15 years ago. Here the police department went clueless and was left with no lead. Once Vik was in the scene, he slowly found the clue and how it led to the murderer.

On the whole, I really loved and enjoyed reading the book. Each story is amazingly written and makes us feel we are together investigating the case with Vik. Just go for it. Expecting the next part of Vik’s investigation. Happy reading.

Move over Sherlock, India has a new mystery king. And he’s not even a cop.

🔍 INSIGHT: Narrated through the eyes of Rik Chatterjee, the younger brother of the protagonist, the book Deadly Clues offers a glimpse into his brother, Vik, or Victor Chatterjee, who has a passion for detective work. While not a professional investigator, Vik approaches each mystery with precision while keeping a nonchalant attitude.
The book is divided into four thrilling standalone cases.

🔍 REVIEW: Deadly Clues is more than just a mystery collection, it’s a psychological dive into curiosity, obsession, and the human mind’s darkest corners. The Rik-Vik brothers dynamic adds warmth and humor to the story. Vik’s quirks, deductions, and unpredictable methods will remind readers of the tales of Sherlock but with a modern, Indian twist. Each story is crisp, layered, and paced to perfection, with climaxes that feel shocking. The book is moderately paced and in a easy to understand language which makes it suitable for younger readers also. If you enjoy detective fiction with a personal edge and cleverly crafted twists, this one deserves a read.

🔍 STRENGTHS:
1) The narrative being that of Rik-Vik’s brother is unique as it provides an interesting perspective.
2) Every story is different which gives diversity to the cases and highlights the authors creativity as well.
3) Writing style and pace of the book makes it a suitable read for readers of all ages.

🔍 DRAWBACKS:
1) While Vik’s persona is described strikingly, the narrators’ character could also have been depicted a bit more.
2) More explanation on how Victor decoded the mysteries could have been given, as it felt like at some points only the character of Victor knows the details of mystery but to the reader it is not quite obvious/understandable.

🔍 TARGET READERS: 10+

🔍 GENRE: Thriller/Mystery

🔍 RATING: 4/5

This book is sharp, smart, and mysterious enough to keep you awake all night!
I am a voracious thriller reader. And the book “Deadly Clues” has been my perfect company in the last two weeks.

Victor Chatterjee, the detective, has his own unique ways of solving cases. He is not the show-off detective. He comes off as quite down to earth, with hawk’s eyes. He can read people. He can infiltrate through the missing pieces of the puzzle and decode the truth layered between words deftly. I felt as if I am unravelling the mysteries with Victor Chatterjee. The narrative flow is very realistic. The surprising part was his transition from a chemistry instructor to an investigator with exceptional intelligence.

One of the pivotal characters is also his brother Rik, who is the perfect intellectual counterpart of the calm-headed Victor.
Let me come to the stories now. I will stay away from spoilers.

A drinking games goes terribly wrong. The presentation of the story and the way the author has woven a taut plot, is truly commendable. Then there’s this killer who hits into the eyes with a bull’s eye precision. I kept turning the pages and I sublimed into a world filled with suspense, satisfactory plot twists, and a cinematic vibe.

Don’t be overconfident as a reader, if you feel you have solved the mystery already. The ending is going to steal your heart each time and prove your guesses wrong.

The atmospheric setting across the lanes of Kolkata deserves a special mention. The author has refrained from using too much fluff. If you are exploring detective thrillers for the first time, you are going to enjoy the stories with equal enthusiasm as voracious thriller consumers like me.
I am in love with “Deadly Gambit”. The pace is superb without feeling like a car race.

An offbeat collection that tests your guessing abilities! Read it ASAP!

A calm, razor-sharp investigator with an eye for detail and a talent for solving complex mysteries, Victor Chatterjee is introduced to readers in Amritendu Mukherjee's captivating, deftly plotted detective thriller "Deadly Clues: Detective Victor Rises." Victor and his humorous younger brother, Rik, deal with a series of strange cases, including a poarcher gang leader who hasn't been apprehended in years, an elderly man who mysteriously died from a slit throat, a murderer who targets the eye with arrows, a friendly drinking game that ends in death, and an elderly man who becomes blind overnight.

Reminiscent of vintage whodunits set in contemporary India, the writing is lively and captivating. By using clever twists and red herrings, Mukherjee masterfully creates tension. Those who enjoy deduction-driven crime fiction will find Victor's analytical style to be both entertaining and fulfilling. The Chatterjee brothers' chemistry adds humor and strikes a balance between charm and tension.

What I enjoyed:
• Interesting, distinctive cases that steer clear of cliches
• The dynamic between Victor and Rik adds humor and warmth.
• Clear, quick-paced narrative with powerful revelations
• Victor's final explanations of how he resolved the case
• The narrative is told from Rik's point of view, praising his brother's abilities.
• Five distinct tales, each with its own twists

To be honest, there is nothing that could be improved. It was the ideal balance of crime, mystery, and numerous internal plot twists.

Fans of clever mysteries, eccentric detectives, and suspenseful plotlines will find Deadly Clues to be an enjoyable read overall. You will adore this one if you are a fan of Holmes.
For all of the previously mentioned reasons, I give this book a solid five stars.

I am not much into thrillers and suspense. If you might have known me for sometime, its very clear via my feed but omce in a while o come across books like these which makes me jump out of my comofort zone. I picked this book as one of my sister loves reading books of yhis genre so I bought it woth a view of hifting her. But can I be a reader if I just give it to her without reading. When this book came I was intrigued and started reading it. I thought soon I will lose its grip but I was dead wrong.

Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee is just a fabulous read. A not-so fan of suspense too was continuously flipping its pages just to know what's next. Its a book of 190 pages and I finished it in 2 days...quite a win for me for reading a suspense book (or maybe author)

Yeah so coming back to the point. This is a wonderful read which left a mark on my mind. The series of events happening in the story line were so fast and thrilling. The Brother duo was top notch. The author has a commendable hands on writing. The characters portrayal, narration and the language used all was so simple and easy to understand that it was a very perfect combination for the readers who love suspense and thrill.

I loved the character of 'Vik'. He was depicted as the smartest man on the planet. His clue finding abilities, the quickness and Everything was so tempting to read. Bit this wasn't it...the other brother 'Rik' was also smart. His observations and thoughts were coming at Unexpected times yet seemed very to the point. Both brothers were a delight to read.

Overall, I would suggest just go for this book even if it's not your genre because what if this book makes you fall in love with the genre!!

“Deadly Clues” is an assemblage of five intelligently plotted mysteries that indulge the readers into the analytical universe of Victor Chatterjee — a composed, attentive chemistry professor who, against the odds, becomes a great detective.
Victor's genius, modesty, and subtle charm are the qualities that make him a one-of-a-kind character in the fiction detectives' realm.

Every story within the anthology has its own unique storyline — with fiendish murders, puzzling riddles, and more — and they all together form a gripping collection of suspense that cannot be put down. The pace is lively, the plot twists are not expected, and the endings are very intellectually satisfying. Out of all the stories, “Deadly Gambit” is the one that stands out most, as it has the right mixture of tension, surprise elements, and emotional aspects.

The book's enjoyment factor comes from its very basicness and sharpness. The prose is sharp, the visuals are like in a movie, and the crimes are brief but also full of curiosity. The relationship between Victor and his smart young brother Rik adds a very heartwarming and funny vibe to the story, which is absolutely perfect as a contrast to the crime-solving and death dealing aspects of the plot.

Amritendu Mukherjee's tale has a slight touch of the old school detective fictions — imagine Sherlock Holmes, but this time with Indian taste and contemporary twist. The collection of Deadly Clues is rapid, sharp, and very engaging— a source of cozy mystery tales that the followers of the mind-bending-thrillers should not overlook.

It does not matter if you are a novice or a aficionado reader of detective fiction, this book guarantees a delightful trip with boundaries of logic, humor, and suspense.

Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee introduces Victor Chatterjee, a young Bemgali detective with a brilliant mind, sauve demeanor, and an inclination to discover the truth at any cost.

This book has a collection of 5 stories.
I was hooked from the first story itself "Where it all Began" which shows Victor nabbing the head of a ruthless gang of poachers. In "A Deadly Quest for Justice", he unravels a locked-room mystery, while in "The Deadly Gambit", he unmasks a killer hidden in plain sight.

In "What Lies Beyond ", an old man becomes blind when someone throws a liquid at his eyes but he hadn't seen anyone and his servant isn’t seen after this incident. So, was the servant the culprit? I watched with awe as Victor unmasked the killer here, too, with a cool mind and intuitive deduction.

The last story "One Eye, One Shot", where the victims are murdered with an arrow struck through their left eye, was my favorite.

In all of these stories, the author cements Victor's personality as a level-headed, rational person who thinks through every possibility that the situation presents and then eliminating the improbable based on evidence. He doesn't hold any grudges or prejudices against any person, rather has a laser-sharp focus on unearthing clues.

Further, the author vividly captures all the action and adventure. It was as if I was watching the scenes unfold on TV. My only gripe with this book is that in some places, the Indian English would stand out.

To conclude, Deadly Clues is a brilliant detective fiction introducing a brilliant young Indian detective to the audience. Definitely worth reading.

✨ Book Review ✨
Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee is a mystery book that pulls you in right from the first page 📖. It has five different detective cases and each one is full of suspense, twists, and surprises. I kept telling myself "just one more page" but ended up finishing the whole book in one go.

Victor Chatterjee, the main character, is a chemistry professor who also solves crimes. He is calm, smart, and very observant. He doesn’t try to act like a hero but still feels so powerful with his sharp thinking. His character feels real and relatable. What I truly loved is the bond between Victor and his brother Rik ❤️. Their friendship, support, and light-hearted moments make the story feel warm and personal.

The cases are all very unique and interesting. A deadly drinking game, a man who suddenly goes blind, a murder with an arrow , each one feels fresh and exciting. The writing is simple and clear. You don’t get confused at all and the story moves quickly. The author gives small clues here and there which makes you feel like you are solving the case along with the characters.

There are moments that will shock you, some that will make you smile, and others that will stay in your heart 💭. I liked how every chapter builds tension and excitement, and just when you think you know what’s going to happen, the story takes a new turn.

If you enjoy crime stories with clever detectives, emotional bonds, and surprising endings, then Deadly Clues is a must-read ✅. It has everything – thrill, heart, mystery, and great storytelling. I totally enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good detective story.💙

Every once in a while, you stumble upon a book that doesn’t just entertain, it consumes you. This book is exactly that kind of read. It grabs your attention from the first few lines and refuses to let go until you’ve devoured the final page. It’s not just one mystery, but a carefully crafted collection of five brilliantly unique cases, each with its own eerie signature and unexpected conclusion.

The brilliance of the book lies in its structure - five standalone cases that feel like chapters in a larger emotional journey. Whether it’s a bizarre arrow killing or a chilling case of sudden blindness, the author builds each story with methodical intensity and finishes with a jolt that leaves you stunned. There’s never a dull moment; just when you think you’ve figured it out, the plot takes a sharp turn and surprises you all over again.

What makes this book shine even brighter is the relationship between its protagonists - Detective Victor Chatterjee and his younger brother Rik. Victor’s calm, logical mind is a sharp contrast to Rik’s eager and emotional energy, and together they bring a beautiful depth to the narrative. Their bond isn’t just endearing, it anchors the book with warmth amid all the darkness.

For anyone who enjoys cleverly plotted thrillers, deeply human characters, and mysteries that actually make you think, this book is an absolute must-read.

Deadly Clues by Amritendu Mukherjee is an electrifying and cerebral whodunit that introduces readers to Victor Chatterjee, a sharp and martial arts trained Holmesian figure navigating the shadows of a terrifying mystery. The story, narrated by his younger brother Rik, draws you in from the first page with an ominous blood spattered bathroom and a desperate plea from a friend whose family is being stalked by an unknown force.

The novel weaves two threads, a chilling case of illegal wildlife poaching that spirals into international intrigue and a deeply personal mystery involving a stolen family heirloom and a gruesome murder. Mukherjee crafts a tightly knit narrative where every character, clue and footprint carries weight. What sets this story apart is its realism. The protagonist is no superhero, but a brilliant and determined young man piecing together dangerous truths while avoiding both bullets and bureaucracy.

The scenes are vivid, the deductions compelling and the suspense masterfully sustained. Vik’s confrontation with professional criminals, his duel of wits with a corrupt journalist and the unraveling of secrets inside a seemingly peaceful household make this book impossible to put down.

The mix of family loyalty, sharp observation and high stakes detective work reminds one of early Sherlock Holmes stories but is grounded in a rich Indian setting that feels fresh and immediate.

This book is highly recommended for teenagers, young adults and mystery lovers who enjoy fast paced thrillers with smart protagonists and a strong emotional core. An absolute page turner.
