Moon Over Midnight

Rate this book
Moon Over Midnight is the story of an RCAF bomber pilot and takes place over a period of five or six months during 1943/44.

We follow the pilot as he flies from his base in the north east of England and experiences the air war in the skies over Germany, during Bomber Command's most intensive period. Mission after mission, operating on shredded nerves and fuelled by a diet of cigarettes; alcohol, toast and jam sandwiches. These last being one of the very few things that didn't freeze at high altitude.We also meet the members of the crew that he takes on these deadly missions; hounded by flak, fighters and searchlights and we experience through the pilot's eyes the terror of being in a metal tube, 18,000 feet above a burning city.

Mixed in with all this there is humour too; coarse, sarcastic and petty but there is also trust and friendship, not to mention love and painful, unresolving loss.

Moon Over Midnight is not pretty or as the pilot says when he paraphrases Churchill;

"I have nothing to offer expect perhaps vomit, stress and fear."
