"Please hurry, devochka. He’s coming." When her parents died, Tally Petrenko was shipped off to her uncle. He was supposed to do one thing: take her to Pottersfield. Two years later, he still hasn’t done it. Now it’s too late. Grigori has found her. Tally is on the run from Grigori, an ancient evil that has been hunting her family for generations. He wants to kill her and steal her power—a power she doesn’t even realize she has. Tally must learn how to use her power, stay one step ahead of Grigori, and get to Pottersfield!

Pottersfield is a shared-world setting created by Jason Asala and Tim Bohn. The Pottersfield Institute is the home base of a wide array of characters found in two multi-book series. Jason Asala writes about Pottersfield in his Civil War Leviathan series, and Tim Bohn writes about them in his Legacy of Magic series.

Tim leads off first with The Old Blood, the first book of the Legacy of Magic series. In mid-2015 Jason follows up with the first book of his Civil War Leviathan series, The Last of the Virginia Regulars.

Tim Bohn is a novelist, playwright, teacher, husband, and proud papa. He was born and raised in Wisconsin (Go Packers!), but has since moved progressively deeper into the South. He now lives in Jonesboro, Arkansas with his family and their fat dog. He refuses to move any farther south, as he is afraid of alligators.

I'm not just saying this because I know the author, but this is one AMAZING book! A young teenage girl has lost everyone dear to her. Her parents are dead and she lives with an uncle that doesn't seem to care much for her. All of a sudden, her world is once again ripped apart at the seams. She finds out that she has magic that she never imagined existed and that there are lots of secrets about her family's past that she has no idea about. The female main character is I think 14 if I remember correctly. Although this is a YA book and the beginning of a series that I think I am now hooked on, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under the 7th grade. There are some graphic scenes in the book and some settings that might not be appropriate for students under 7th grade. This book is a perfect addition to my book collection and I look forward to more books from Tim and more of the Legacy of Magic series in the future.

I was thoroughly engaged in this novel from beginning to end. The characters are incredibly well-written, the action tense and exciting, and the storyline teems with originality. Tally, a young orphaned girl of 14, discovers that she has magical powers. While one may assume a kinship with the "Harry Potter" series, the similarities end there. Whereas the two franchises share a dark foreboding atmosphere, as well as an orphaned teenage protaganist, this novel is firmly rooted in the realistic world of the Russian mafia, as well as the deep southern Louisiana bayou. There is something very American and also very frightening in this novel, that goes beyond the dark magic embodied by the evil antagonist Grigori.

Tally, a 14-year old child of Russian immigrant parents, is forced to live with her Uncle Viktor - a cold-blooded Russian mobster - after her parents are murdered. Frightened, depressed, and alone - and very unaware of her soon-to-be-discovered magical powers - Tally finds herself to be little more than a reluctant errand-runner for her uncle, and his other Russian mafioso friends. That is, until the evil Grigori shows up. We assume he is just a rival gangster, here to start a war with Viktor's gang. But when he survives a hailstorm of mafioso bullets, we discover that there is more to Grigori than meets the eye. Luckily, there is more to Tally than meets the eye, as well.

It is simultaneously a coming-of-age story, an action-adventure fantasy, a terrifying horror story, and a powerful examination of the power of friends, family and faith. I unequivocally give it 5-gold stars, and cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love fantasy and young adult fiction, and this book does everything a first book in a series in this genre should do. The protagonist is captivating: a believable, non-stereotypical example of a modern pre-teen. The fantastical elements are interesting, imaginative, and original. The world the author creates (in what I believe is his first published novel) is a compelling blend of folklore and real life. All in all, The Old Blood was a pleasurable read and I look forward to more in the series.

Really great read! This book is awesome - it moves quickly, the characters are well developed and you fall in love with them quickly. This story is so well weaved - it is hard to put down. It creates a world that is tragically magical, and wonderfully vivid. If you have not read this book, you should. I can't wait for the next book!

Legacy of Magic: Book 1. The Old Blood. By Tim Bohn.
A young girl named Tally has a secret even she doesn’t know. Flowing through her veins is the power of the Old Blood, a gift that’s been passed down in her family for generations. But when her secret comes to light, there’s no stopping the darkness that would consume it. Grigori, an ancient evil, has found her, and nothing will halt his ever-trudging advance towards making this power his own. Her only hope of survival is reaching Pottersfield, an institute few have ever heard of. Will she reach them in time, and if she does, will they even be able to help?

The Old Blood, by author Tim Bohn, is the blistering fast story of innocent lives fleeing the unstoppable evil that wishes to consume them. The epitome of an epic chase, the Old Blood will keep you on your toes for the duration of the journey. At such a break-neck pace, you won’t have time to catch your breath before the action overtakes you. Author Tim Bohn, in conjunction with Jason Asala, has done a spectacular job of creating the world of the series, making its fantasy elements grounded and believable to exist alongside our own. The story is fleshed-out with use of the Russian mafia and the Louisiana Bayou’s rich subcultures. This dark, sometimes horrifying, coming-of-age tale will make you long to experience the serene powers of the Old Blood one moment, and get them as far away from you as possible the next. But it will always draw you ever nearer to its pages, just as Grigori draws ever nearer to his prize.

My only complaint is that it isn’t long enough. Coming in at just over 200 pages, it goes by in a flash with the speed that it reels you in. I wanted to know more about the characters, the institute, and the Old Blood, not to mention the intriguing topics that are touched upon in the Bayou. I want to know more, but I’ll have to wait for Book Two. Let’s all hope it’s longer. In the meantime, I plan on reading some of Tim Bohn’s theatrical work.

As a precautionary, I would not recommend this book for readers under the age of 12 due to the graphic nature of the novel. It is best suited for young adults.
