A dark fantasy romance with forbidden powers and forbidden loves.
She's the runaway princess with a forbidden power that no one knows about except her parents, who were killed. But while on the run, she's kidnapped by the man responsible for her parents death and he declares her his eldest son's new bride. But when that's announced, the second eldest, who hates her, claims her as his own.
Will his alliance to his family win out over his attraction for her? Will she be able to trust him after being on the run for 300 years? Or will their hatred for each other be the end of them both?
While I really enjoyed the storyline and potential behind this book, ESPECIALLY the characters (we love a badass FMC and Farah was IT), there was a lot missing for me.
The plot did have quite a few quick turnarounds in it, as well as repetitive words and/or wording. This happened A LOT throughout the book and it started to get a little aggressive at times. I think one paragraph had the word “door” approximately 9 times in the span of 4 sentences.
Some things were a little rushed, and then others seem to be more dragged out and complicated.
It didn’t quite hit the mark, but was still an easy, 2-day, enjoyable ride for me! Total of 2.5 stars rounded up.
Thank you so much to Trinity for this advanced copy!
A dark romantasy that will grip you from the very beginning. There is minimal spice, but what’s there is written beautifully. The world building is not a large aspect of this story, making it pretty easy to read quickly. The FMC is a tough woman who goes through some really difficult things. So please check triggers before reading. Overall, I found this book intriguing and it has a great cliff hanger leaving you wanting more. I will definitely be reading the next one!
Farah and Ardonis are enemies to lovers in this book. Farah has been taken and is to be married to Ardonis’s brother but after seeing the way his brother and father treat her Ardonis has other plans. My heart broke for what Farah went through! I need book 3 asap that cliffhanger had my mouth hanging open in disbelief for 5 minutes before I started screaming WHAT?!! I need this paperback for my book trophy!
If you enjoy morally gray characters, high-stakes intrigue, and enemies-to-lovers romances set in a brutal world, this one’s for you. Just brace yourself.....
“Serpents & Shadows” is an intense, emotional rollercoaster that doesn’t let up from the first page. Matthews spins a tale of betrayal, survival, forbidden magic, and unexpected love that left me both breathless and heartbroken.
The story opens with Princess Farah fleeing for her life as her family’s castle burns. What follows is a brutal journey spanning decades, where Farah transforms from a sheltered princess into a hardened assassin with a secret past and forbidden powers.
Two princes, Arkon and Ardonis, serve as chilling foils. Arkon’s cruelty and manipulation contrast sharply with Ardonis, whose own dark past and tender moments with Farah blur the lines between captor and ally. Their dynamic is one of the strongest parts of the book.
There are dark themes (torture, abuse, sexual violence), but they’re handled with gravity and contribute to Farah’s growth. Her forbidden magic and her complicated relationship with Ardonis provide glimmers of hope amid the darkness.
The ending? Absolutely gut-wrenching. Matthews leaves us on a cliffhanger and I don't want to spoil anything so you'll just have to read it yourself to find out what happens. All I will say is I NEED book two immediately!!!!
Everything you could ever want from a fantasy novel! Serpents and Shadows is the perfect blend of action, tension, and romance.
My rating (eARC): 9/10 Tropes: Forced proximity, forced mates, enemies to lovers ____________________________________ Plot: Farah is the princess of the white-witches, but is forced into becoming a mercernary when her parents are killed by the dark-witch king and she flees her kingdom. She is sent by the leader of the white witch refuge on a mission, but is captured by the dark witch king and his two sons. Ardonis, the younger dark warlock prince, is the one who captures Farah, but feels the inexplicable pull to protect her during her imprisonment. The king prepares for the forced marriage of Farah to the older, cruel prince, Arkon, in order to use her powers to strengthen their bloodline. Ardonis is torn between his loyality to his family and his feelings toward Farah, but ultimately helps her in ways that would have him punished for treason. Farah and Ardonis undergo a journey of hidden abilities, unassuming villians, and finding strength in emotion. But will their union be able to withstand the harm done by their enemies?
Characters: Farah is icy, protective, and stubborn. Before she is forced to go into hiding, she is naive and powerless. She has incredible growth throughout the story, going from meek to powerful and unfeeling to confident and embracing of her emotions. She is an FMC that can hold her own, which I loved. Her journey with how she perceives feelings and emotions was so gut-wrenching in the best way! Ardonis is compassionate and dedicated. While he still does some morally questionable things, he stands apart from his family in how he cares for Farah and fights for her freedom. Both characters complemented each other well and were able to help each other through battle and conflicts. Also, the hidden abilities were SO FUN, but I won't say more on that to keep this review spoiler free.
Plot and writing style: The book was fast-paced and well written. The first few chapters were a little slow and the sequence of setting the scene was a little clunky, but everything smoothed out a few chapters in. These are also LONG chapters (which I don't mind), but is something to keep in mind. We also get dual POV, which helps keeps us updated on the storyline while one of the characters is indisposed.

Conclusion: this is one of my favorite fantasies I have read in a while! The storyline and magic system was easy to follow and consistent, while still having enough nuance to keep things interesting. I also really appreciated the inclusion of multiple antagonists, including unexpected villians. My heart literally broke during the ending scene and cliffhanger, so I hope the next book comes out soon! Definitely recommend!
Three words, what the f*ck?! Trinity, you diabolical writer. What kind of cliffhanger/ plot twist ending was that?! Please, please, please read Serpents and Shadow, book friends. This ripped me to shreds but I loved every minute of it. 🥹
S&S is a dark romantasy that follows Farah, a white witch princess on the run from black witches trying to kidnap her to use her. She ends up being found and taken by Ardonis, the youngest son from the black witch royal family behind the attack on her kingdom and her parent’s death 300 years ago. After Ardonis delivers her to his father, the king declares her as the bride of his older brother but that doesn’t agree with Ardonis one bit. He felt drawn to her when he found her and will do anything to make her his. As prisoner, Farah does everything she can to escape her horrible fate to a torturous marriage. Does she end up making it out and escaping or does she end up stuck there forever? Read to find out!
This was so so good. The book captures you right from the beginning with action and I couldn’t stop until I finished. This was true enemies to lovers so the slow burn/ pull was oh so good. But damn, Farah has gone through some rough shit that has made her into a fierce, take no prisoner badass she is. After learning what she went through, I admired her for all the times she held her head high through her capture and didn’t back down from anything. Before reading, check TWs! This deals with some content not for everyone.
Thank you Trinity for giving me the opportunity to read this and ARC. I’ll just be over here dying for book 2 asap!
Serpents and Shadows is a beautiful mix of enemies to lovers and forbidden love. Two rivals, two kingdoms and two families. Farah has character growth throughout the entire story, and sometimes I was just screaming at them both to kiss and just be happy and run off into the woods. Then you read about their dynamics, how they got to where they are and what his family had done to hers.
There’s a balance of magic and powers with a little bit of world building. I would love to see more of the villages or towns and the kingdom itself as a whole. It was very heavy on the captor/captive, dark romance plot and was done very well. He uses his shadows, I mean, come on, chef’s kiss.
The banter was good, the connections were organically built, and I’m hoping to get more tension and keep the stakes high. There was a little background of the hatred between the white and dark witches, but again, would love to read more about why, what happened between hundreds of years, why can there be no peace?
Overall, it was very enjoyable and I am super anxious to get my hands on the second book! The ending leaves you on a cliffhanger where I can’t be fulfilled until I read the second one.

⭐️4.5⭐️ She had her parents ripped away from her a long time ago, but the hatred for the men that did it, didn't diminish after 300 years. Set on revenge, she accidentally ends up at the mercy of one of those men she despises. Or is he the one who should watch his steps?
I started reading at 8 p.m. and couldn't stop till it was finished at 00.35 . The story started nice and cosy to evolve in immediate chaos and murder what made you dive in the story and had you questioning everything from the start. The action kept on going through the whole storyline and there were no parts that felled slowly what is a very hard thing to accomplish. The only thing I did miss was a bit of character building and world building to make the scenes more alive in my head. I really got completely lost in this book and that is always a good sign!
A big thanks to @Trinity Matthews for providing me with this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
The storyline was good, the characters are so good I absolutely love Farah and Ardonis the enemies to lovers is just so good in this! I absolutely HATED how badly Farah was treated by her so called saviour and it was heartbreaking to read what she had been through. But seeing what she made of herself and how strong she was gave me huge respect for her.
Ardonis being the one who was originally out to get her becoming the one who loves her was so sweet and so nice to see develop throughout the book , but his family can go rot in one of their dungeons.
Now the ending. I don’t think I will survive it. It was heartbreaking shattering and soul crushing. I was shocked, didn’t see it coming and be prepared for it to devastate you if you want a happy ending.
Were there parts that were rushed yeah, was it not as descriptive as I would have like also yeah. But overall it was a good read and I will be reading the next book.

I received this as an ARC for free and leaving this review voluntarily.
I have big feelings about cliffhangers, man. I understand WHY they're used and exist and all but oh my gawd, the angst and concern and frustration when I get to the end of the book before I want the end of the book - uuuggghhhh. Does it make it a good ending or bad ending when you are yelling at your book?
But really though. I very much enjoyed these characters and the enemy to lovers romance. The characters were fairly consistent throughout, though there was a sudden shift that felt just slightly unbelievable. A big argument could be made for fear causing that big shift though so it can and does work.
Definitely wanted more torture and suffering and pain for the antagonist that was solved in this book. Just a little.
So, once again, I find myself dancing on the edge of my seat neeeeeeddding the next book now. No ETA yet...
I received this ARC and let me tell you…Trinity didn’t just leave us on a cliffhanger… she yeeted us off it with no parachute and whispered, “Good luck.” I was holding my breath like I was underwater, and honestly? I might still be.
Our FMC? Certified bad mamajamma. She’s the kind of heroine who could break your heart and your kneecaps, and you’d thank her for both. And Ardonis? Whew. That man has me questioning my life choices and my emotional stability. Every time he showed up, my Kindle got hotter and my standards got higher.
This book had my emotions doing cartwheels. One minute I’m swooning, the next I’m scowling at the page like it personally betrayed me. I even caught myself muttering “what the actual—” more times than I care to admit.
Bottom line: I NEED answers. I need closure. I need therapy. Trinity, if you’re reading this, please release the next book before I start sending carrier pigeons with desperate pleas.
So, first things first I would like to say thank you to Trinity Matthews for selecting me to read an ARC of this book. It was definitely a fun read. So, the main reason for my three star review is that the writing style was not for me. There was a lot of repetition, and it read kind of young. However, The story itself was fascinating. For the first half it felt a little confusing, but that may have just been for me. I also found some of the development between the FMC and MMC to be a little rushed. But it definitely followed the enemies to lovers trope. The last half was definitely my favorite! The story started getting so intense and flowed really smoothly. It does end on a cliffhanger (which absolutely shattered me) so I can’t wait for the next book!
What would you do if you were captured by the very people responsible for killing your parents? To add insult to injury you then end up falling for one of them! That is where our FMC finds herself. The author does an amazing job of crafting this story in such a way that we are able to see exactly how the love story between these characters bloom. This is a very well written story that uses great imagery so that the reader can fully visualize what happens. The author also does a great job of keeping up with the timeline so the reader can see how the story progresses over time. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this story!
Thank you Trinity for the copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.💜💜
Thank you to Trinity Matthews for the opportunity to ARC read this book.
I zipped right through this story in less than 24 hours. Although her writing still needs some maturing, it’s compelling and enjoyable to read.
Farah and Ardonis’ story itself is engrossing and though they are both definitely morally gray, you find yourself rooting for them the whole time. The enemies to lovers trope never fails!
If you’re looking for dark romance intertwined with magic filled fantasy - this is a great book to curl up with.
Don’t sleep on Trinity Matthews because as she gains experience in her writing, I trust she’s going to be propelled into a prominent position in the Romantasy world.
DNF~ did not finish.
OMFG, the hold this book had on me from page 1 to the end! I literally freaking devoured this book and oh my Ardonis whew that man can do whatever he wants!
Feminine rage, absolutely cutthroat badass FMC, pissed off, brooding, shadow wielding, second son, and major touch them and die vibes, this book is absolutely a must read!!!
I need book 2 like now!!! I can’t thank the author enough for this arc and absolutely recommend this to everyone who wants to yell, cuss, and cheer on a woman who takes what she wants!
Loss strengthens you—but positively or negatively, that’s dependent on you.
We see the story of a woman who goes through great loss to even harder trials on her path to vengeance. We see the story of a man who goes through a massive change when powers known to be forbidden show. And when they're put together, who knows what they're capable of?
A fast-paced romantasy with a lot of tension between an FMC who removed her emotions and an MMC who helps her contain them but also wants to know all her emotions. And a dang ending that leaves you wanting more.
This book had a lot of potential, and I was really hoping to connect with the story. Unfortunately, the writing felt a bit stiff to me, which made it hard to find a natural flow or form any real emotional connection with the characters. There was a noticeable disconnect that pulled me out of the experience. By the time Ardonis and Farah’s spice finally arrived, it just didn’t land the way I’d hoped—it fell flat. With a little more fluidity and emotional depth, I think this story could really shine.
This is actually a true enemies to lovers situation so it is pretty dark. Farah used to be a princess and is now in hiding. She has been through a lot of trauma and it shows. Ardonis is a fully morally black prince from a neighboring country who helped his super evil father and equally heinous brother kill her family. His father, who is a king, wants Farah to marry Ardonis' brother. The world outside the castle was interesting with white witches being hunted down. I didn't really feel the connection though between Farah and Ardonis. The ending to this book was wild. I am interested to see what happens next.
I wish I could say more than 'How fucking dare you end it there!' but I can't. I read it in a oner till 2am because I couldn't put it down and then I didn't sleep until 3am questioning where I was meant to go from here. Book 2 soon please. The right amount of story. The right amount of spice. But my one issue...I couldn't picture the characters very well. I think I need more description as they seemed a little fuzzy looking in my mind.
This book has me LOCKED IN! I completed it in one day and all I can say is where is the next book?! The story line keeps you engaged from the first page. It’s the perfect balance of love and hate. Decent spice. You get a FMC who kicks ass and is snarky. A morally grey MMC who would do anything for his lady😍
This was my first ARC read and what can I say it did not disappoint. My heart broken at the ending for Farah. I have so many questions 😂 please hurry with the second book.
In all honesty love it would recommend reading this, it keeps you interested from page 1
“she didn’t have to use her powers on me to bring me to my knees.” Trinity wove a beautiful story of enemies to lovers that kept me constantly turning the pages.
My first fantasy as well as enimies to lovers. Can admit i was a bit bored in the beginning but HOW the tables turned ❤️🔥 how am i gonna survive waiting for their story to continue!?
