Moving On

Rate this book
A moving saga of conflicted family loyalties and late-flowering passion set in 1970s' Liverpool.

Liverpool, 1973. Reluctantly, widow Jenny Langton decides to downsize, swapping the spacious family home she shared with her late husband for a one-bedroomed retirement flat at Merseyside Mansions.

It’s difficult enough attempting to start anew at her age, but the antics of her wayward granddaughter Karen, and her disastrous choice of men, threaten to drive Jenny to distraction. Finally conceding that Karen must make her own mistakes in life, Jenny determines to move on and no longer interfere.

Just as she’s settling into Merseyside Mansions and making new friends, Karen’s reappearance threatens to de-rail Jenny’s carefully-constructed new life and cause problems with her fellow residents. Her relationship with her granddaughter tested to the limit, Jenny must decide whether she should allow family loyalty to stand in the way of her future happiness – particularly now she’s about to embark on a late-flowering love affair …

Rosie Harris was born in Cardiff and for several years worked in the City Hall. Her husband, Ken, was from Wallasey and after they married they lived on Merseyside for many years.
She has been writing since the 1950’s. In the 1960’s she ran her own agency, Regional Feature Service, writing articles for most of the provincial newspapers.
During the 70’s she became Editorial Controller for a non-fiction house.
In the 1980’s, after publishing a number of non-fiction titles she turned to fiction and during the 1980/90’s had a number of short stories published as well as five books by Sphere under the name Marion Harris.
Since 2002 she has had some 20 books published by Heinemann/Arrow. She sets her books in the 20’s because she has a great admiration for the women who were wives and mothers in those days. They had none of the current time-saving equipment – no washing machines or vacuum cleaners, no instant electric fires or cookers, and certainly no Internet. Their days were long and arduous and often they had to manage on very little money.
In 2005 she was one of the judges when Arrow and Asda collaborated in a major national competition to find the next big saga writer.
Her most recent titles are Love Changes Everything and The Quality of Love. The next, Whispers of Love, will be published in March 2010.

What a terrible ending!! Jenny's male friend supports her through years of difficulties. They finally decide to marry and again through the span of a couple of years, they have to keep postponing the wedding due to ridiculous circumstances. A few pages before the book ends, Jenny finds out he isn't the man she thought he was. Really?!?! She puts him off continually and he patiently waits through all of this for her and then all of a sudden he becomes a controlling, abusive man?! I'm feeling like the time I have spent reading this book was a waste of my time.

Jenny Langton is a widow whose only son has recently died. She lives with her eighteen year old granddaughter, Karen. Eddie always wanted his daughter to go to University but she has no desire to do that. She agrees to take a secretarial course and starts working at the same company her father worked at for years. Meanwhile, the bills are piling up at the beautiful sea side home Jenny has lived in for years and her income does not meet the demands. Then Karen decides she wants to move out and Jenny knows she has to try to make ends meet.
After Karen seems to make one more disastrous decision after another with the men she chooses, Jenny is left with no choice but to sell her home and move into a senior's facility. There she meets new friends but still Karen's choices keep her worried about her future.
I enjoyed this book for the different plot she has chosen. As for the ending, I don't have a problem with how she chose to end the book.

Karen is a very determined person and not nice at all.
Jenny puts up with so much.
An excellent read.

Quite an enjoyable book about extended family relationships and how they can affect your life. Jenny decides to move to a smaller place and start to forge her own life again and comes across new problems to work through.
