"A thought-provoking thriller filled with jaw-dropping twists that kept me racing through the pages." —Gigi Pandian, USA Today bestselling author of the Secret Staircase Mysteries

A twisty thriller about a woman who vanishes from a luxury hotel, and the detective who believes the case is tied to the unsolved disappearances of other Black women in the city.

Giovanni Mason worked hard to become the first Black head concierge at Chicago’s exclusive and glamorous Ivory Hotel. It’s a job that requires patience, perfection, and, above all, self-control. But when Giovanni reunites with her former best friend, makeup influencer Natalie Moore, things get heated as a mending of fences morphs into a public argument in the hotel restaurant, and Giovanni loses her cool. Hours later, Natalie is missing. Evidence piles against Giovanni—a ransacked, blood-spattered hotel room, fresh bruises on her body, and a troubling gap in her memory from the last twelve hours.

Detective Redding Stark is the only one unconvinced of Giovanni’s guilt. She sees disturbing parallels to a series of disappearances targeting Black women and believes Natalie’s case is part of something bigger. Together, she and Giovanni are pulled into a dangerous web of privilege, power, and betrayal inside—and far beyond—the walls of the Ivory Hotel.

Will Giovanni and Detective Stark find Natalie or join the missing?

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the advanced copy!
This was my first time reading anything by this author and honestly? I loved it. The short chapters made this such an easy page-turner, and the dual POV between Gio and Redding kept me hooked the whole way through. This book reads like a straight-up thriller — I was invested from the very beginning and could not put it down until the very end.
What really got me though was how the author managed to weave in bigger, more important topics without it feeling forced. The story touches on Black women going missing and not receiving media coverage — or only getting attention when it’s already too late. It’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough, and it felt really intentional and thoughtful the way it was handled here.
If this is my introduction to this author, I am absolutely looking forward to more. A thriller with real substance — highly recommend!

A domestic cop thriller with sensational suspense and tension built up to make you look forward to whatever is happening next. The author Catherine Adel West vividly paints the picture of suspense and scenery as the city of Chicago is the backdrop to the story but gives an edge to the story. One major supporting character, Natalie would be voted most likely to get run over by an airplane intentionally as she was unbearable but necessary for the plot.

I love the cast of narrators , Deanna Anthony; Emana Rachelle; and Machelle Williams. You knocked it out of the park with your voices. There is confusion with flashbacks and slows the story down. Overall a fun ride.

This thriller set in Chicago connects a hotel worker, her missing influencer friend, and a detective. I really appreciated how the story shines a light on missing Black women and the frustrating lack of resources their cases receive compared to others. The character development was also well done and listening to the audiobook definitely enhanced the experience. While the social commentary and character work are great, the overall pacing felt a bit off at times, and things got a little muddled in the middle.

Thank you to HTP and Harlequin Audio for the ARC and ALC!

3.5⭐️ rounded up…Thank you to HarperCollins and The Hive for the ARC. I read this in about two days and flew through it, especially the audiobook version. The narration was fantastic and really carried the story for me. I did struggle with confusion around timelines and perspectives throughout, and I wasn’t always sure what was happening or if that was intentional. Some of the twists caught me off guard, but I wasn’t fully emotionally invested in the story or characters, so they didn’t completely land. I’m intrigued enough by the ending to consider continuing the series.

2.5 rounded up. This book is ambitious, perhaps overly so, as it takes a lot on and got a bit muddled for me. I was invested early on but about halfway through I found myself caring less what was happening. The selective amnesia bit really lost me and given how long this was, not sure if the ending twist to set up a sequel is really necessary. This was a case where wrapping things up a bit more succinctly would’ve been useful. Not sure I’d tune in for a second.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley.

I enjoyed Strangers Behind Closed Doors. It was one of those mysteries that pulled me in pretty quickly, and before I knew it, I was halfway through and realized I had completely skipped my usual check-ins. So that’s always a good sign.

The story follows Giovanni, the chief concierge at a luxury hotel, and a detective who is investigating the disappearances of missing Black women. I really liked the dual POVs here because we’re following two Black women trying to solve the same crime from different angles. Giovanni is trying to make sure she doesn’t become the scapegoat for another woman’s disappearance, while the detective is trying to prove that she can still trust her own judgment after a past case went wrong.

For me, the plot worked. On the surface, this could easily sound like another “missing Black women” mystery, but as I kept reading, it became more layered. I did guess some things before they were revealed, but not so early that it ruined the experience. It still kept me reading, and there were definitely moments where I said “one more chapter” and then absolutely did not stop at one more chapter.

I liked Giovanni a lot. She has this determined, “I’m not about to be blamed for this mess” energy that I appreciated. I also liked watching both main characters grow as the story went on, even if I wouldn’t say the character development was unforgettable.

The writing was solid. Nothing about it blew me away, but I also didn’t have any real complaints. It was easy to read, moved quickly, and kept the mystery going. Emotionally, I don’t think this book was really trying to wreck me, and it didn’t. I was more invested in the mystery than emotionally attached, which was fine for this type of read.

My main issue is the cliffhanger. I liked the ending overall, but I don’t love being left with a cliffhanger when I don’t know for sure if there’s going to be a book two. Like please do not leave me standing here with questions and no confirmed answers. That’s rude.

Overall, this was a solid, quick mystery that kept me engaged. I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy missing person mysteries, dual POVs, fast pacing, and stories about secrets, judgment, community, and who gets protected.

I received an advanced copy of Strangers Behind Closed Doors from NetGalley, and this was my first read by Catherine Adel West but definitely not my last. I was hooked from page one staying up into the wee hours of the night. The mix of luxury hotel glamour, messy friendship history, and the very real dangers facing Black women in Chicago made this impossible to put down. In the story we follow Giovanni Mason, the first Black head concierge at the elite Ivory Hotel. She’s polished and composed until a run‑in with her former best friend, Natalie Moore, explodes into a public argument. When Natalie vanishes hours later, the evidence piles up in all the wrong ways: a blood‑spattered hotel room, bruises Giovanni can’t explain, and a frightening blackout in her memory. It’s the kind of setup that makes you question every character, every motive, every timeline. Detective Redding Stark is the only one who refuses to accept the easy answer. She sees disturbing similarities between Natalie’s disappearance and a string of other missing Black women whose cases were quietly brushed aside. The partnership between Stark and Giovanni, two women navigating systems built to overlook them adds emotional depth to the tension. And yes, there’s a twist. A good one. The kind that shifts your understanding of who’s really pulling the strings inside (and far beyond) the Ivory Hotel. It’s not over‑the‑top, but it lands with the right kind of “ohhh” that makes earlier clues snap into place! Also, for me the Ivory Hotel itself feels like a character, glittering on the surface but rotten underneath. The story moves fast, weaving privilege, power, and buried betrayals into a thriller that’s both entertaining and socially aware. I can't wait to read the next novel from this author. #netgalley #strangersbehind closed doors

4.5 ⭐️ 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗖𝗞 𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧 𝗣𝗘𝗘𝗞
After a public fight with her former bff Natalie, hotel concierge Giovanni becomes the prime suspect when Natalie vanishes. Detective Redding Stark links the case to other missing Black women and vows to find every single one of them.

𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜𝗢 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘
Amazing narrators. Gio was high energy and completely felt like the character. Same with Red, who sounded like she was carrying the weight of the world.

The flashbacks were a little tricky in audio because they sometimes dropped into scenes without warning, but they added so many layers to the mystery that I let it go.

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘
This is a story about Black women being ignored, underestimated, and forced to protect themselves when systems fail them. But it never felt preachy because it’s entertaining, fast paced, and completely bingeable.

The short chapters, dual POVs, and layered clues keep this fast. Such a good mix of high drama, procedural elements, and action. Giovanni is the light while Detective Red brings the grittier reality.

I usually have a clear favorite character, but Giovanni and Detective Redding were equally kickass. Gio is emotional, witty, and brave. Red is determined and puts her career ahead of everything else, including family, which I loved seeing in a role usually given to men.

The whodunit itself wasn’t a total shock, but the twist still got me. And that final scene? Kinda juicy. Sequel anyone?!!

𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗?
This was such an entertaining thriller, but it also felt important. Under all the twists and drama is a very real message about Black women being ignored and overlooked, and I thought the book handled that powerfully.

Definitely one for readers who love whodunits and kickass women.

Thank you Harlequin Audio and NetGalley for this gifted ARC.

What a delightful mystery, full of suspense, secrets, and obsession that borders on unhealthy fixation!

This is a story where paying attention to the details pays off. There are secrets on secrets that naturally get peeled back, often leaving you with just as many questions as answers. It has a decent amount of psychological thriller, between the missing women, the stalking, and of course, the deaths & near death-situations.

Two main things stood out to me in this book. First, the character depth. I loved how we got to know both Gio and Red, how their characters developed as the story went on (both in backstory coming to light as well as growth in their character arc). And how their growth told a tale of female friendship and trust.

Secondly, I loved all the commentary interwoven into the writing. The resiliency of Black women, that which they are forced to have because so much of the world is stacked against them. The love for the important people in your life, and how far people will go to protect them. The good and the bad of loyalty, and what people will overlook to protect secrets.

I will say, there were times I got a bit confused with the flashbacks from both Gio and Red. It did eventually come together and make sense, but you really do need to be paying attention to keep all the different plot lines straight in the half of the book.

All in all - 4.5 stars, rounded up.

I listened to this one on audio and honestly flew through it.

The story follows Giovanni, a concierge at a luxury Chicago hotel, who finds herself at the center of a missing persons case when her former best friend disappears after a very public argument. At the same time, Detective Redding Stark is investigating several missing Black women cases and begins to suspect there may be a connection.

The audiobook narrators did a fantastic job and definitely helped keep me engaged. I found myself wanting to know what happened and kept listening because every time I thought I had something figured out, the story would take another turn.

What stood out most to me was the attention the author brings to missing Black women and how often those cases don't receive the same attention as others. It added an important layer to the story without feeling preachy.

My biggest struggle was that I got confused more than once. Between the flashbacks, timelines, and different storylines, there were moments where I wasn't completely sure what was happening. I also never felt as connected to the characters as I wanted to, which kept this from being a higher rating for me.

Overall, this was a solid thriller with strong narration, plenty of twists, and a story that kept me listening. While it wasn't a favorite, I'd definitely be willing to pick up another book by this author.

3.5 rounded to 4

Captivating debut thriller introducing two black protagonists who fight for the voiceless and the lost (Kirkus).

Redding Stark, a Black policewoman, follows a creed of duty that requires giving one’s all. When Natalie Moore goes missing from her room at The Ivory, a surveillance camera picks up Giovanni “Gio” Mason, the first Black concierge of The Ivory, slapping Natalie. Gio and Natalie have had a complicated history and right now her desire to please is not working so well. As things progress Gio is accused of murdering her influencer friend. Redding is not convinced she did as Redding believes the disappearance is part of a bigger plot that goes up to powerful men. Gio joins Redding in investigating the disappearance.

The book alternates between Redding and Gio as the book explores the case and the lives of Black women trying to make ends meet. It also has a delicious noir feel - the city, uncovering evil at high places, a vulnerable detective. This work to heighten the message of the need for social justice. This is best summarized in Redding’s words that when Black women go missing only apathy appears, so Blacks must “save themselves.” It’s a story with twists and turns that keep the pages turning.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Park Row Books for giving me access to this ARC.

Thank you to the author/publishing team for the ARC copy.

I wish I could give this 6 stars!! I was locked in from the prologue and the book never let me go.

This is Murders in the Building but make it Black in Chicago.
Secret after secret. Plot twist after plot twist. And just when you think you’ve figured it out? Absolutely not.

The story follows Gio who works at a hotel. She is the last person seen with Natalie, a Black influencer before she disappears right after their fight goes viral.

Simple, right? Just say what happened.

Except Gio can’t remember a thing. That missing time becomes the emotional and narrative engine of the story.

You know how documentaries always say, “She wouldn’t hurt a fly”? Gio gives that energy at first but we soon learn she’s lowkey ready to tussle at any moment.

And Natalie is layered. She’s mischievous and magnetic in the most compelling way.

Detective Redding brings a powerful secondary perspective. Redding cannot shake the pattern: multiple missing Black girls on Chicago’s South Side. Now Natalie is gone. Redding is wondering if someone is specifically targeting girls who look like them?
Redding is relentless. Paranoid. Obsessed in the way you have to be when no one else seems to care enough.

This is not a quiet psychological mystery. The novel blends layered investigation with high-stakes action—shootouts, escalating danger, and shocking reveals—creating a story that balances suspense with momentum. The twists build organically, rewarding readers who pay close attention to detail.

But what really did it for me was the writing style; descriptive without dragging, immersive without confusion. I felt like I was inside each POV, watching everything unfold in real time. With short, propulsive chapters, the pacing feels intentional and urgent.

Beyond the mystery itself, the book explores memory, loyalty, obsession, and the vulnerability of Black women in urban spaces. It centers voices and communities that are often sidelined in mainstream thrillers while still delivering an undeniably entertaining read.

If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers with layered friendships, strong female leads, and plot twists that keep shifting the story, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Strangers Behind Closed Doors, completely hooked me from the start. The short chapters and dual POV between Gio and Detective Redding Stark made this such a fast, addictive read that I honestly couldn’t put down. It has all the elements of a gripping thriller — twists, tension, suspicious characters, and a dark luxury hotel setting — but what really made it stand out was the deeper message woven into the story.
I appreciated how thoughtfully the book handled the issue of missing Black women and the lack of media attention these cases often receive. It added real emotional weight and substance without ever slowing down the suspense. Gio and Redding were both compelling characters, and their determination to uncover the truth kept me fully invested the entire time.

Atmospheric, twisty, and socially aware, this was an impressive thriller debut for me from this author, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more. Perfect for readers who love mysteries with both suspense and something meaningful to say

The social commentary and character development were the standout elements of this book for me. The exploration of how missing Black women are often overlooked was powerful and gave the story a lot of depth beyond the mystery itself.

The narration was well done, and the full cast brought the characters to life. My only issue was that some of the flashbacks did not always come through as clearly as I would have liked in audio format.

As for the mystery, there were quite a few characters and plot points, and not all of them flowed together cohesively for me. I found myself wanting a tighter, more focused story. The ending also clearly sets up future books, and I tend to prefer my whodunits to have a more wrapped up conclusion.

While this one was not a perfect fit for me, the social commentary alone makes it worth picking up. That was easily the strongest and most memorable part of the book.

many thanks and gratitude to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for providing me with an early audiobook copy of Strangers Behind Closed Doors by Catherine Adel West in exchange for my thoughts and honest review.

this was the first book i’ve read by this author and what an introduction! this novel had me on the edge of my seat. it’s suspenseful, engaging,
and features characters that are intriguing and multifaceted. the story is a thrilling mystery but also does well to highlight the issues related to how Black women are treated in the media when they go missing (spoiler, it’s lacking).

this story is told from multiple POVs and the narrators, Deanna Anthony, Emana Rachelle, and Machelle Williams did a phenomenal job reading the parts, giving distinct voices to the characters, bringing the overall story to life. i highly recommend that if you can listen, do so—it’s a fabulous listening experience!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Giovanni has a lot going on between her job as a chief concierge at an elite hotel in Chicago and her mother's illness. When her ex best friend, Natalie, shows up as a guest at her hotel with a booking on a top floor, Gio agrees to meet her for dinner. That night after a fight Natalie disappears. Redding is a police detective in Chicago who is stuck on the cases of five missing women. Could Natalie be the next in the group?

I don't want to give anything away so I'll try to give the headlines. I've been in a slump where books have not been good/lived up to my expectations. This book was so good that it's a rare five star read for me. I enjoyed both the mystery and the twists, as well as the character development; especially Gio's relationship to friendship. I highly recommend and I really hope this turns into a series.

This mystery centers on the disappearance of Black women, following the FMCs as they search for a missing influencer. Beyond the central investigation, the novel highlights an important and often overlooked reality, the lack of attention given to missing Black women.

The audiobook narration was well done. However, I found the story slow at times, particularly in the first three-quarters. The large cast of characters and shifting timelines occasionally made the plot feel confusing and harder to follow. While the pacing improved toward the final quarter, some elements of the plot felt a bit far-fetched.

The ending clearly sets up future installments in the series. While readers who enjoy ongoing storylines may appreciate this, I don’t feel compelled to continue with the next book.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for the advanced listener copy in return for my review.

📖 Strangers Behind Closed Doors is a Mystery/ Suspense novel that touches on topics of race, gender, privilege, systemic injustice, and power

I feel like audio is the best way to read this book. It will make it more fast paced. I like my thrillers fast paced and twisty. I did enjoy this read but the first 70% of the book kind of drags out. There are some decent twist both nothing mind blowing. My favorite part about this story is the FMCs. Catherine Adel West wrote strong, intelligent, and resilient characters. Most books write the females as damsels in distress or flighty. Not these women. She structured these characters perfectly. I definitely recommend you try it out.

Strangers Behind Closed Doors by Catherine Adel West had me tuned in from the start because y’all already know I’m always here for a good missing person thriller.

One thing this book did well, delivering a strong FMC. I love a main character that refuses to fold under pressure, and this one definitely brought that energy. The multiple POVs kept the story layered, and the narrators really added to the overall experience.

That said, the pacing leaned a little slower than what I typically prefer for a thriller, and some of the flashbacks didn’t flow as cohesively for me, which occasionally pulled me out of the story.

Overall, if you enjoy character-driven thrillers, multiple perspectives, and unraveling secrets behind closed doors, this one may be worth adding to your TBR

A twisty thriller that connects a detective, a hotel worker, and her influencer friend in a story full of surprises. One thing I really appreciated was how the book shines a light on missing Black women and the lack of attention and resources their cases often receive. There were several twists I didn’t see coming, and I enjoyed getting multiple points of view along with the timeline format. It kept me invested in uncovering what was really going on.The pacing felt a little uneven at times and occasionally lost my attention, but it picked back up toward the end and finished strong.I’m curious to see if there will be a second book because it definitely feels like this story could continue.

Thank you Harlequin Audio for my gifted copy!

Strangers Behind Closed Doors was such a layered, dark thriller. There are multiple storylines, but at the heart of it is how society turns a blind eye when Black women go missing. How the news won’t report on it, on these women who are someone. Who are someone to somebody. They’re important and they deserve the spotlight when they are harmed.

I loved this book as an audio, but I also read it as a physical book. The narrators did such a wonderful job of bringing this painful story to life.

It was also interesting to hear of Chicago landmarks I’m familiar with.

Fantastic story, highly recommend.

3 Stars! Thank you to Park Row for the ARC in exchange for a review. All opinions in this review are my own.

What I Liked
- Holy cliff hanger!!
- Good set up for more books in the series
- Chicago setting
- Premise
- Funny one-liners throughout

What Needed Some Work (In My Opinion)
- Editing: There were several times I wanted the book to move forward faster. There's a ton of backstory and not all of it necessarily contributes to the overall story
- Too many characters: I had a really hard time following everyone in this story, who did what, etc.

Overall though, a really solid story! I would read more in this series!

This book was really entertaining & I found myself very invested. I loved the glamorous atmosphere set against the messaging regarding privilege & systemic oppression. This book does a great job of sprinkling in humor, I really enjoyed Gio’s character. I always appreciate short characters, it makes the books so welcoming to readers who have short bursts of time to read. The ending definitely left me thinking. Overall this book had a lot going for it. I did struggle a bit with the pacing being a bit slow & the structure being confusing at times.

Big thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for allowing me to enjoy this.

Living in Chicago and having worked in hotel management this was the perfect novel for me! A murder mystery yes, but also a story of strong female characters and a dogged female detective who understands the nuances of and the complexities of African American ambition and family. I hope the detective shows up again in her next book. Highly recommended for the character development and the windy complex case.

Strangers Behind Closed Doors is dual POV, and honestly Giovanni’s chapters were my favorite! I don’t typically pick up detective/investigation stories, but this one peaked my interest. Redding (the detective) had some heavy stuff going on and I felt for her family, as well as her.
