A story where romance meets crime. Amanda Lipton leads a fairly uneventful life as a teacher. The most she has to worry about is staff room politics and petty quarrels among pupils and colleagues. But everything changes as she wins a million in a TV show!
To escape the stuffy atmosphere at school, Amanda decides to change her life and take a luxury cruise, no expense spared. Expecting a life of luxury aboard the Belgravia, she is dismayed to find events rapidly spiraling out of control. Her fellow passengers are not as they seem and eventually she's drawn to two men - but can she trust them? And... whom to choose?
When she witnesses what looks like a cold blooded murder, Amanda realises that her own life could be in danger.
A delightful romantic comedy with a twist of suspense and murder to it.
This was a quick fun read; not too taxing on the grey matter. Sometimes it's nice to relax and read a book without tying your brain in knots trying to work things out too much. That being said, I didn't work out the identity of the murderer on board until almost the big reveal so Martha Fischer succeeded in keeping me in suspense.
Amanda Lipton is a bit of a strange character; I didn't particularly like or dislike her but she just felt a bit flat so she had no overriding qualities to which I could relate. I did like her being careful with money, at least at first, as she has just scooped the jackpot on a TV show. I thought it was very amusing that even though she is now a millionaire, she only got a place at the VIP table as somebody mistakenly thought she had something to do with Lipton tea. This place at the table could be very costly though, with a murderer on board targeting the first class passengers.
It felt a bit like I was reading Amanda's diary whist reading Death on the Ocean. She is certainly attracting some male attention and it surprised me that she's the type of person who wants to sample the produce before she buys it. Thankfully, she doesn't kiss and tell so we are spared the details and allowed to concentrate on the thriller aspect of the story. I did enjoy the mystery/thriller story rather than the romance one; I'm not saying I don't enjoy a bit of romance now and again but it just felt a bit too diluted for me.
The cast of characters are set out like a game of Cluedo so it's great fun trying to work out who killed Mrs Peacock in the cabin with a snake bite. If you're looking for a quick easy read, then Death on the Ocean fits the bill. It's lighthearted enough to read on holiday by the pool or on the beach but I maybe wouldn't read it if you're going on a cruise, as the thought of being stuck in the middle of the ocean with a murderer on the ship gives me the heebie jeebies.
I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
This was a fun read for me - real escapism and a nice cosy mystery added to the mix along with the romance side of things, so there was always that element of what was going to happen next, and wondering just who to trust! Just like the main character, Amanda, who found herself getting paranoid about people while she was supposed to be having the time of her life!
Amanda has a normal life as a teacher, dealing with the politics of school life, but when she finds herself winning a million on a TV quiz show, she soon finds life changing around her but not for the best! People she thought were her friends are soon after her money, so she decides to throw caution to the wind and get away from it all by going on a luxury cruise! Surely life will be happier and simpler on holiday?! Wrong!!!
On the cruise she finds a variety of people from different walks of life, even a Nobel Prize Winner, but things start to get very wrong quite soon when she appears to witness someone being thrown overboard - or did she?! Maybe the victim had been drinking and fallen - the whispers amongst the other passengers and the theories start to stack up as to what did happen that night.
She seems the type of person not to let things lie so sets out to find out more about people - but someone doesn't like her interfering as she gets a threatening message under her door. And then there's another victim....
This had lots to keep you guessing and loved how she also managed to attract romantic attention while getting to know more of the passengers! You really don't know who to trust amongst the characters involved as there's definitely more to some than meets the eye and I had great fun trying to work out who was most likely to be the killer!!
Quiet, steady Amanda leads a quiet and stress-free life. Her life as a teacher is fulfilling, but not very luxurious or exciting. When she wins the lottery, she is suddenly swimming in cash. Deciding that she earned a little spoiling, she books an all expense paid cruise, but things do not turn out the way she envisioned. She is attracted to two different men, but do they like her for her? Or just for her money? Drawn into the mystery of a missing passenger at sea, a possible murder, Amanda traipses about the ship from one dramatic situation to another, when all she really wanted was to enjoy her relaxing holiday. Interesting book, it was slow to start but once you get on board, the pacing starts to pick up. Humor, mystery as well as romance are in here so it can easily draw in different readers. Amanda is no Sherlock or Watson, so don’t expect any flashes of brilliance here. Still, I found it entertaining which is all that matters.
I chose to read this book because I love Agatha Christie and after reading the blurb I thought it had that kind of feel about it. I was wrong, but I still enjoyed the book. It was a bit kitsch in that I felt it was kind of naff, predictable but something kept me reading. There is no detective work discussed - which was what I was hoping for. It is more of a chick lit than a mystery. Not my cup of tea at all, but something kept me reading. I think I liked the characters - Amanda is endearing, Marge is scatty, John reminds me of several older relatives. It was a light hearted, easy to read, shallow but sweet story and I think I would read more by the same author.
My preferred genre to read is romance. I was excited to get started reading this novel because it had an extra mystery element. The story itself was good - the inner dialogue was the best part. The reason I gave it four stars was two part. 1.) I found the main character, Amanda, to be a little much at points. Instead of losing myself in her character, I found myself feeling that she and her actions were a little much. 2.) The mystery itself was kind of easy to solve. I wished it would have been a little more complex. But overall, I enjoyed it.
I found this book to be only so-so. The main character, Amanda was somewhat annoying. The story itself was just okay. Amanda wins money on a tv show and splurges on a luxury cruise. While on the cruise murders take place and she sets out to investigate. I thought the story was very predictable. There were very few surprises in store. It was a fairly quick read. I would not recommend this book to others.
I love a good mystery, and this book was just up my alley! It had all of the great parts of a mystery and was written superbly. I cannot stress enough how much suspense this held me in. I loved the different details it had to help you solve the case and some to throw you off the scent. It is an intriguing story set with a main character who isn’t the usual grumpy detective which is really refreshing. Plus some love in there too.
Entertaining, though I didn't like all the people I think I'm supposed to like, and it was all vanishingly unlikely. And I didn't enjoy all the self criticism, it got really old, really quickly. Still, I enjoyed it, and am left with the feeling I'd like to read another, which is a good sign.
I really wanted to like this story but the main character was such an obnoxious bore, I nearly quit reading it. The mystery was so-so, in fact I skipped to the end to avoid the cringiness.
What a fun and quirky read this book was. I whizzed though it! A great mix of characters written with wonderful expression and humour. Our main character Amanda finds herself on a luxury cruise ship The Belgravia. Something in her wildest dreams she never thought possible. However whilst exploring the ship and her new found luxury surroundings she manages to find herself the witness to a murder! Add to that rich, eccentric and mysterious passengers and a sprinkling of a romance (or two!) this is a fun summer read. I really liked the details the book goes into to describe the luxury of the trip particularly the food, that Amanda clearly enjoys, the characters and the customs that take place on a luxury cruise such as this. All those breakfasts in bed and champagne seemingly on tap 24/7!! It really gave the reader a feel for decadence. The romance elements are heartfelt if a little fun and the cosy crime murder mystery is nicely paced with clues to keep you guessing. It reminded me a little of an Agatha Raisin mystery.

Unfortunately, DEATH ON THE OCEAN was a complete miss for me. I did not connect with the characters nor did I enjoy the style of writing. It had a premise with potential, but, in my own personal opinion, missed the mark.
Not to my taste. I found the main character, Amanda, so annoying that I wanted to throw something at her. The mystery and love triangle were predictable, bland and boring. All in all, I think I will skip any other books in this series.
This was a quick read that held me in suspense until almost the end. If you like a story that reads really fast and ends quickly this is for you! Fun book!
