The Inheritance by J.D. Overstreet is a contemporary family drama with mystery, romance, and small-town intrigue. It was published in 2024 by 8th Avenue Press.
Tessa Bellwood, 31, appears to have everything: a successful reporting career at a New York newspaper, a wealthy fiancé, and a carefully planned future. But everything collapses after a career-ending scandal. Her engagement also falls apart, leaving her financially and emotionally adrift.
Then comes another blow: her estranged mother dies.
Tessa discovers that her mother has left her the Blue Heron Inn, a bed-and-breakfast on the Northern California coast—almost 3,000 miles from her former life in New York. Tessa initially sees the property simply as something she can sell so that she can rebuild her life.
But once she arrives, things become considerably more complicated.
The inn is struggling financially, there are hidden debts attached to the estate, and Tessa begins uncovering a side of her mother’s life that she never knew existed. At the same time, the small coastal community is facing pressure from powerful commercial interests, while Tessa becomes acquainted with a man who is both attractive and connected to those interests.
Gradually, Tessa realizes that the inheritance is not merely a piece of property. It is a door into her mother’s past and an opportunity to understand their complicated relationship.

Great Read
Following Tess as she went about finding her true self and finding her home was a Rollercoaster ride.
Tess was a truly resilient young woman. I was exhausted on her behalf , it was one thing after another. But, she kept going. Digging deep and realizing she needed to make peace with her past before she could truly move forward.

Loved every sentence in this book. The angst that the daughter carried. The eccentric mother’s legacy. The twists and the happily ever after, were beautifully woven.
