On the magic imbued continent of Irridessen, twin Princesses must forego their delicate sensibilities and reveal the bloodthirsty beasts hidden under their perfect, immortal skin. Only one can win the coveted title of Queen on High - but securing the crown will come at a steep cost.
When a rare flicker of magic flares within the confines of the Slate Kingdom, two disgraced King's Guards hunt for the source - desperate to uncover the identity of a murderer while a formidable enemy stalks closer, determined to stop them by any means necessary.
Unaware of the tension brewing in Irridessen, Lenna wallows in the doldrums of life, struggling to accept her role in a society that demands her subservience and meekness. At fifty-one years old, she reminisces fondly on her youth and the freedom she had prior to marrying a powerful Lord. But when migraines begin morphing Lenna's dreams into nightmares of leathery wings and giant stone beasts, she is forced to confront a reality she never knew existed – before she is devoured by the very same monsters that haunt her.

WOW JUST WOW!!! This was absolutely an incredible adventure in to a world I never want to leave… I have not felt this way about a book since iron flame/acotar! This truly kept me wanting more and more of this outstanding story. The characters were just brilliant and I loved every single one of them. They all had such an amazingly strong bond that will not be broken easily, their difference and personality just made it even better. Was filled with action that made you want to join in the fight, twist I definitely didn’t expect at all, sadness and happiness all wrapped in to one amazing piece.🖤 I can’t wait for you all to dive in to this world and experience it all too. And I can’t wait to see what else is to come from this brilliant author… ✨
This story will keep you engaged from beginning to end. Think ACOTAR/TOG vibes. To start, the first MFC you meet is an older woman, and I loved that so much. I’m not in my 20s anymore and Lenna was very relatable. But not only do you have one MFC, you have three and they are fierce in their own ways. There was also magical creatures that I hadn’t been introduced to yet in a story and it really gave this a fresh feel on fantasy.
The world building and unbreakable bonds between the characters makes you wish you could visit the kingdoms and hang out with them all. The amount of detail given to the story made this play out like a movie in my head.
Katerina did a wonderful job explaining the back story and answering all the questions you might have. The twists were unexpected and I look forward to following the characters on their next journey.
Queens of Spells and Stone swept me right out of my reading slump. I devoured it in just two days, which feels like magic in itself. This book was such an adventure. The pacing kept me hooked, the writing was fun, and every chapter pulled me deeper into a world of political intrigue, dangerous magic, and found family. Lenna stole my heart. She's a middle-aged FMC in a loveless marriage, only to discover the dreams haunting her may not be just dreams. Her courage, resilience, and journey of self-discovery were powerful and so refreshing to see in a fantasy world where normally I feel like so many FMC's are teenagers/early 20s. Esmeray was another standout. She was sharp, witty, and delightfully snarky with a soft heart beneath her hard exterior. And then we have Laurent and Merrick, who were my favorite longtime besties. Together, this group created the kind of found family dynamic that makes my heart so happy. What I loved most was the balance: court politics and monsters in disguise on one hand, banter and warmth on the other. It was the kind of story that felt both darkly enchanting and wildly fun. Ugh I want to reread it again already. The ending left me desperate for more. I need more of these characters, more of this world, more sass from Merrick, and more of Esmeray's bite. Luckily, the sequel is waiting for me and I can't wait to dive back in. If you love fantasy that's fast-paced, adventurous, and brimming with heart, Queens of Spells and Stone needs to be on your TBR.
Thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader 🖤 I knew from the very first sentence that this book was going to be beautifully written with incredible world-building - and I was not disappointed. I was captivated by the character’s bonds and fierce loyalty to each other plus Katerina gave us not one, not two, but THREE BADASS FMCs. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a middle-aged protagonist, but I felt Lenna was easy to connect with and I was rooting for her to find herself again and come into her power. I do feel like I wish I had a little more back story to some of the characters, but I imagine we will continue learning in the books to come. An amazing debut! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
first i want to say thank you to katerina for the arc!! okay now let’s get into it! this book gave us multiple strong female leads! dragons!! fae & gargoyles!! there’s fated mates & multiple pov’s. 3 strong female leads!! i literally did not want to put this book down and read it in one sitting. based off of the ending, i genuinely have no idea where the next book will go & that’s super exciting! i can’t wait to see what happens next!!
Loved this book. I loved author’s writing style and the storyline. The characters were instantly likable and I wanted to know every detail about them as soon as I started reading. Reading book two now!!
Queens of Spells and Stone completely took me by surprise—in the best way. I went into it curious, but I didn’t expect to be so instantly pulled into the story. One of the first things that made me fall in love with this book was the main character. She’s a middle-aged, plus-sized woman—finally! A fantasy heroine who isn’t a teenage chosen one or a twenty-something assassin. Instead, she’s wise, flawed, real, and still on a journey of self-discovery. It was so refreshing to see an actual adult take center stage in a world of dragons, fae, and gargoyles.
The story itself is fast-paced and packed with adventure, magic, and plenty of emotional depth. I loved how the author wove multiple POVs throughout the book—it gave me a chance to connect with different characters and see this incredible world from various angles. The world-building is immersive without being overwhelming, and the pacing kept me turning pages long after I should’ve gone to bed. There are themes of identity, found family, empowerment, and the power of choosing your own path, even later in life.
This book doesn’t just deliver on fantasy; it also brings heart, nuance, and representation that the genre sorely needs more of. If you're craving a magical world that doesn't feel like a copy-and-paste of every other fantasy book—and a heroine who breaks the mold—Queens of Spells and Stone should be on your radar. I can’t wait to see what Katerina Stevens writes next.
Queens of Spells and Stone opens The Vessels of the Gods Series with ambition. There’s threads of political intrigue and forbidden magic. It’s a dark fantasy that feels epic, but also intimate. The multi-POV is definitely a strong feature. With a third person narration but also first person narration, depending on the POV that we are on. It took me some time to get used to the change, but it didn’t actively bother me.
PLOT: There’s 3 main stories that obviously come together. The twin princesses - their rivalry drives the political intrigue part of the book, both women are shaped by prophecy which builds tension between them. The disgraced guards - two soldiers that carry the weight of failure and regret, leading them to investigate further. The middle aged noblewoman - the most unexpected and refreshing POV to me, Lenna finds her life unraveling as visions awaken inside her, bringing her arc into an amazing transformation. The pacing serves the plot well: slow at the first half, exploring the different POV’s; accelerated second half, with layered revelations, betrayals and violence.
CHARACTERS: Lenna is definitely the standout. Her journey from subdued housewife to a woman forced to face terrifying truths about her own capabilities is empowering. She is flawed, compassionate and so deeply human. The depiction of her age, of her grief and of her craving for purpose makes her one of the most powerful fantasy protagonists for me. The princesses are opposing interpretations of power (I won’t say which one is which because of spoilers), one is ruthless and manipulative, while the other is desperate for autonomy yet bound to politics. Their rivalry reminded me of a classic Cain vs Abel archetypes. The former guards, Merrick and Laurent, bring a sense of camaraderie and found family early on. Their arcs are not fully mapped out, but I’m enjoying both of them so far. Sparrow is a refreshing character in the story, while also bringing some mystery with her.
WORLD BUILDING: I really enjoyed the world building aspect of this book. Irridessen, The Slate Kingdom and all of the world just feels layered and lived in already. The fae and the gargoyles is such a nice duality, bringing the questions of identity and inheritance to the book. How much of what we are is chosen versus destined?
Overall, Queens of Spells and Stone is not a light fantasy, it’s dark and layered. Morally complex characters, slow burn relationships and a richly building world.
Queens Of Spells And Stone is a great debut fantasy. It took me a bit to get right into it, but once it got to the bones it really picked up. Quite a clever and alluring world, with an intriguing back story. The world building is well done, clear, and easy to visualize. The politics, mystery, and battles of the plot really carried the story along. A middle-aged protagonist is quite refreshing. Her human journey in the foreign realm is so engaging and descriptive, I could really relate to her emotions surrounding her story line. With more than one FMC the story really gave girl-power vibes in the best way. The male MC’s were pretty bad-ass too and their friendship was heart-warming. I enjoyed the fae/gargoyle mix of beings and how their unique magic played a part in their characters development.
Some of the twists I did see coming and I was a bit thrown off by the switching of 3rd and 1st person POV. Overall I really enjoyed the read and would recommend it. I definitely need to see what comes next for these fantastic characters!
i kind of knew going into this that i was going to love this book, and boy was i right! not only does the debut fantasy have fae and dragons, but it has GARGOYLES. in my opinion, a hugely underrated and under appreciated character type that more people should be exploring!
i loved the world building of this story. i loved the different kingdoms (and am so hoping that some of the ones we didn’t get to explore show up later in the series). i loved the way the author told this story. the different povs and the characters were easy to follow and made the story that much more enjoyable.
and let me just talk about the characters - specifically the women/females. i. loved. them. adored them. our fmcs are strong, independent, caring, and badass. they’re well-rounded, fully fleshed characters. so often in media women are depicted as just one thing. i loved getting to see the bonds form between the women of this story.
“Her power was truth, her sword an oddly shaped rock, and her spoils the potential for a life in these lands.”
This was a fantastic fantasy story! I absolutely loved that the fate of the kingdom rests in the hands of our newly ‘awakened’ oracle FMC who is whisked away to the land of fae and gargoyles. But did I mention that she’s 51 years old?! It’s so great to have a character going on adventures with beings who have such long lifespans that actually has some wisdom and life experience of her own rather than being some young and naïve girl. This story has a bit of everything: dragons, magic, a murder mystery, fae, gargoyles, and royal fated mates. This is a great story for fantasy lovers!
What a wonderful book. transporting the reader to a whole other world. the world building was amazing. the characters are are out of this world. and the story itself is so beautifully written. I loved every aspect of this book. this book grabbed me and held me until I was finished. this takes fantasy to a whole other level.
This was a fantastic debut novel. I loved the characters, I thought the world building was well written and explained in depth enough without feeling like there was constant overwhelming info dumps, the plot was so intriguing I didn’t want to put it down once I started!
I did see this marketed as a fantasy romance so I feel like I have to mention if you are going into this *specifically* for the romance aspect you may be a bit disappointed (there IS romance, but that’s not necessarily the primary focus), but if you are looking for a story where some badass individuals team up to uncover the truth behind the murder of the late king and queen, then download this one ASAP.
I never knew I needed gargoyles added to my fantasy reading but, they are an integral part of fantasy and developed so well in this book. From the FMCs to the MMCs each character brought to life a story I was intrigued by and didn’t want to put down…ugh Mom life sometimes.
I cannot wait for more, praying it’s not long til we get it! 🐉🧚♀️🗡️Way to go Katerina Stevens!
Queens of Spells and Stone by Katerina Stevens is an absolute gem! The story pulls you into the magic-filled continent of Irridessen, where two princesses must embrace their inner strength to vie for the title of Queen on High. The plot is rich with intrigue, and the characters are so well-crafted that you can't help but get invested in their journeys. With fae, dragons, and a richly built world, this story completely pulled me in. The themes of loyalty and power struggles kept me hooked, and the characters felt so real. The world-building is stunning, making every scene come to life. I couldn't put it down and can't wait for more from this author.
Queens of Spells and Stone is a smart, quick moving fantasy that grabs you and doesn’t let go!
There are good books and then there are GREAT books that suck you in and take you along for the ride. Queens of Spells and Stone is one of those GREAT books that gets its claws in you from the beginning with smart, relatable characters, and pulls you along with wit, a slick, fiery story full of twists and surprises, and a whiplash ending that sent my head spinning…it was a ride that I didn’t want to get off! I can’t wait for the next book!
For this being this authors first book, I am in awe. I fell in love with each character, who they were, who they wanted to be. Their battles. Their relationships. Their power. I was able to paint a clear picture of these characters and play out this book like I myself was living in their world. I loved the pace of the book. It never got ‘boring’. I always wanted to then to the next page.
Once I got to the last page, I kept clicking for MORE!! I cannot wait for book #2. Until then, I will think of this book and the amazing story told until I can find out what happens next.
The Lesser (Traitor) Queen was banished by the Queen on High for their parents death after taking her soul tie away from her to claim as her own. The Lesser Queen sought out her soul ties friends to help her free him, and learn who reallu killed their parents.

✩ ⋆˙⟡ ✩ ⋆˙⟡ I received this as an ARC while I was reading a different book and I was really excited and looking forward to starting it. It sounded right up my alley and seemed to have a fresh take on Fantasy romance with its 52 year old curvy FMC.
Now, I don’t know if it’s because I had built up expectations for this book, considering I had it for a week before I could start it and had made it up in my mind to be the new big thing, but I was unfortunately underwhelmed once I got to reading.
This is in no way to say that the book was not good or not worth reading. All in all, it was a fun read and did entertain me – I just found there to be no big “woaah” moments in the book. I found it a bit long to start, with it only fully captivating me around halfway through. I felt that not much happened in the first half, and it had me wondering where it was going. The second half of the book was a different story; it felt as if everything happened between the middle and the end of the book, which did make it a lot more fun to read.
Another point that I found a bit lacking was the characters, with there only being 1 character I found myself caring for towards the end. The others, in my opinion, were slightly dull – however, considering this is only the first book in a series, I’m sure we’ll have a lot more time to start getting attached to the characters. My last note is that the plot turned out to be predictable, which left little space for unexpected twists. The story itself was quite interesting and really made up 90% of my rating. The cliffhanger was also a big factor, with it being completely unexpected and I was genuinely shocked and left wondering once that last page hit.
Though there might have been a little bit of dragging or some underwhelming characters, I still think this book is absolutely worth reading and a series to keep your eye on. I’m interested to see what its future holds and will definitely be waiting for the next book to arrive!
Where do I start? This book took hold of me in so many ways!
You'll find fated mates, found family, fun banter, and a cast of main characters rather than just one or two.
The story starts off with Lenna, who is stuck in an abusive and unloving marriage to a Lord. I immediately started rooting for her with the emotional response I had due to her situation. Her personality was clearly dulled by her marriage, and she was isolated from outsiders with few friends or options for getting out of the situation.
Merrick enters the picture to collect Lenna, because she is the new Oracle for Terramere. Lenna is human, and had no idea magic existed. Merrick frustrated me at first, with his non-answers to Lenna's many questions. He softens up with some help of Laurent, who is more up front with helping Lenna understand this new-to-her world.
Aside from a little bit of background on Merrick and Laurent, their characters take a bit of a back seat in the story- we don't really get to see what makes them tick. I'm hoping this is developed out in the next book(s), because I want to see them get a HEA!
The story then turns to Esmeray and Keerian, who are fated mates parted just a week after finding each other. The rest of the book is focused on rescuing Keerian from Esmeray's twin sister Adara. Esmeray's character is complex and strong. She's cunning in a good way, and plays to her strengths to reach her goals. I found myself rooting for her after again having a deep emotional reaction to her circumstances. Despite having the cards stacked against her, she doesn't give up, and she leans on her close friend Sparrow along with Lenna, Merrick and Laurent to save Keerian and the kingdom.
I enjoyed a glimpse into this world, along with a unique magic system. The building of the emotional toll of both Lenna and Esmeray was done so well. There were plot twists, battle scenes, and fun group banter. This was not a spicy book, which is just fine with me. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fantastic debut fantasy novel. I am a big fan of fantasy and this one had me intrigued from the beginning, I have not read an older FMC in a fantasy before and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I adored her. I was hooked from the very beginning and I couldn't put this book down!
This book has multiple POV which I appreciate. I really enjoy having the opportunity to read the POV of different characters. I feel like I can get a better connection with them that way.
This story is set in an enchanting world called Irridessen. It's action-packed, adventurous, epic battles and filled with different magical creatures think Fae, Gargoyle, Dragons, Fire Chickens were my favourite! It feels fresh and unique from your typical fae fantasy and its highly entertaining!
There are a variety of characters and I absolutely adored them all! I can't get enough of the banter and sass. I am excited to see where the next book takes them all.
I will mention that the pacing was quite fast-paced and if the book were a little bit longer I think there would have been a better flow as it felt like there wasn't enough time for the characters to have formed the types of deep quality connections they had in the time frames presented.
But in saying that, I think it was a great set-up for book 2 where these relationships/friendships will have more opportunities to bond and develop even further which I am excited for. I would also love to see even more detailed battle scenes and romantic scenes.
I started Queens of Woven Fate immediately after finishing this book because I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book!
Thank you to author Katerina Stevens and Rattle the Stars PR for providing me with this ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book has absolutely enamoured me into this fantasy world, from fae to gargoyles and humans alike this universe leaves nothing but magic waiting for you when you open the first page. The plot follows Lenna, a charming Lady of the Dortan Estate learning to manage her life as she handles a complicated relationship, and finds that she isn't getting any younger at 52 years old. When headaches and nightmares come to life and give her the chance to follow her heart and fate- she finds that her life is upended and her second chance at a life of adventure awaits her.
Characters: Lenna may be 52, but her mind is sharp, her strong headed and caring energy really carries this story. As a fantasy reader this is the first time I have ever read about a middle aged FMC and her feeling strong and confident is an amazing change from what is normally presented. With a witty and slick fae, and an enchanting and strong hearted gargoyle- Lenna begins a journey unlike what I read in the past and offers a new perspective on fantasy.
Pacing: This book is fast paced, easy to read and changes perspective every chapter. This is really interesting because having multiple points of view throughout the whole book is really refreshing when normally we only get one or two!
Themes:
Found family Found self confidence / happiness Middle Aged FMC Touch him & d*e Slooooow burn Forbidden Romance Oracles / Seers, Dragons, Gargoyles & Fae - and humans ( can't forget about us!!!)
Fave quote:
"Her power was truth, her sword and oddly shaped rock, and her spoils the potential for a life in these lands."
Conclusion & Thoughts:
Queens of Spells and Stone offers a new perspective on fantasy, a middle aged badass FMC making a new life for herself with found family- and potential to see other characters grow beyond what you'd usually encounter in a typical fantasy book. Katerina Stevens gives everyone, no matter their size, shape, age or identity a voice to shine. An easy five star read for me- and I at the time of writing this- am already 30% into the next book!!!
I was looking for a great fantasy romance and Queens of Spells and Stone did not disappoint! You all need to add this to your TBR list, ASAP! Katerina’s world building stands with the likes of Sarah Mass and Rebecca Yarros. Her characters are easy to relate to and I can guarantee you’ll fall in love with them! Action, adventure, Fae and Gargoyles, badass middle-aged protagonist (something I now realize there should be more of), and just the right amount of spice makes this a must read. Katerina pulls you in from the start and makes you feel so immersed in the world and characters she created that you feel you have truly stepped into these lands and become such a part of their friendships and their family that you’ll hurt when they hurt, you’ll celebrate the victories and you’ll fight with them, because you’re there.
I can’t wait to hear what everyone else thinks of this new breakout author and all the fantastic books she will be bringing. Thank you @authorkaterinastevens and @RomaReadsPublishing for allowing me to read, review, and share this magnificent book!
I had the privilege of reading this book as an ARC. (Thank you!)
I enjoyed reading, and found myself wanting to know how it was going to end, hence finishing the book in only 2 days.
The book (and its squeal) are both available on Kindle unlimited (in Canada at least)
There is solid world building. Multiple character first person POV. Found Family Fated Mated Dragons Fae Gargoyles Prophecies
The FMC is 51 (for a change) and in a loveless marriage. She is the Lady of the house and her "wifely duty" is to run the house and turn a blind eye to her husbands affairs.
Our story starts with her having headaches for the last month, and "weird nightmares". After helping two of the house staff get out of the household (and town) Lenna's life changes when she learns that there is Magic in this world and is brought another realm. In this realm, humans live amongst Fae and Gargoyles, and all live for hundreds of years.
A year ago, the King and Queen of the realm are murdered, and their twin daughters are at war with one another. Our FMC is brought in to help shed light on who killed the King and Queen and help end the feud once and for all.
This is more of a Romantic Fantasy (a fantasy book with some romance in it) then a romance with fantasy.
Overall this is a solid read, and I'm excited to see where book 2 takes us.
The beginning of this novel stands out right away: it’s a story within a story, told by a queen to her two daughters — and that inner tale also revolves around two sisters. This layered narrative structure gives the book a symbolic depth that threads through the entire plot.
The main character is equally unconventional for the genre: a mortal woman around fifty years old who finds herself drawn into a magical world of fae. It’s a refreshing change from the usual younger heroines in fantasy. It took me a little while to adjust to this perspective, but I appreciated the different approach.
There are romantic elements, but they remain subtle and never overpower the fantasy-driven storyline. The world-building and characters take center stage. The three main protagonists are strong, distinct, and memorable.
One minor issue was the frequent shifts in perspective, which at times made it harder to fully connect with the characters. Some plotlines remain unresolved — but instead of feeling incomplete, it leaves you curious to see what might come next.
Overall, this is a well-crafted and atmospheric fantasy novel that dares to break with genre norms — all the more impressive considering it’s the author’s debut. Definitely worth reading!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Queens of spells and Stone is an interesting and unique portal fantasy.
Lenna is a a 50 something year old woman trapped in a horrific marriage and has accepted her life is over. However she doesn’t know that she is a potential oracle and when the previous oracle dies, she is activated. (Sort of like how the slayer works in buffy). She is taken into the magic realm with gargoyles and fae and she might finally find freedom from her awful husband and found family to enjoy her now massively extended lifespan.
What I liked in particular:
- Lennas oracle magic. - Dragons 🐉. Bonus points for the fact that they only talk to gargoyles mind to mind. - Laurent and Merrick were a fun double act. - I thought the use of multiple POVs to world build was done really well, it was interesting to learn about the world through their thoughts and perspectives rather than just having characters info dump on the human.
I did think that the book took a little too long to get going but after having read the epilogue I now understand why that was necessary. I will definitely read the next book to find out what happens in Orlas story.

Queens of Spells and Stone took me completely by surprise in the best possible way. From the very first page, I knew Katerina Stevens was about to deliver something special.
Lenna, a woman rediscovering her power and purpose, was everything I didn’t know I needed in a fantasy heroine. She’s strong, flawed, wise, and still learning to embrace herself in a world full of magic, danger, and destiny. I loved seeing her story unfold alongside two other fierce women, each with their own strength and struggles. Together, they embody what it means to rise, reclaim, and rewrite your story.
The world-building was cinematic, with dragons, fae, and creatures I haven’t come across in any other fantasy. The kingdoms felt alive, and the relationships between the characters, rooted in loyalty and love, were the heartbeat of the story. It’s fast-paced, emotional, and filled with twists that kept me reading way past midnight.
This isn’t just a fantasy about magic; it’s a story about identity, sisterhood, and finding your light even when the world tries to dim it.
As I began reading this book I had high hopes. It started off well and seemed so different from other fae books. Unfortunately as I went on I started to become detached and almost didn’t finish it. In the beginning you step into a 51 year old humans life and then you’re thrown into the fae world 1/4 of the way in where the older woman doesn’t seem to fit. Even though they say she might now live to be 800 years old I couldn’t stop imagining my mother or grandmother trying to do some of the things she did in the book. I also felt the book was all over the place jumping between characters who I didn’t feel I had the chance to connect with or feel anything for.
Honestly I’m not sure a second book is needed here. They could have wrapped up a couple things and called it a day. It didn’t seem significant to me to find out where the girl she rescued ended up or where the missing people had gone. The author didn’t give me the chance to care enough to read the second book. I received this book free as a arc reader
I just need a minute to compose myself after finishing Queens of Spells and Stones... what a ride I was sent on!! I knew this was going to be amazing within the first few pages and I was not disappointed. I was really drawn to Katerina's writing style, just beautiful!
The world building was incredible but not overwhelming, I felt this was very subtle and we learnt everything alongside Lenna which was very easy to follow.
I loved Esmeray! She was sarcastic, strong and sassy and reminded me of myself so I have a soft spot for her ❤️ but all the main characters were amazing, especially Lenna... it's refreshing to see a curvy more mature women taking a main part.
Let's not forget the very hot gargoyle men! I mean, this is a first for me but I'm here for it!
Honestly, this book had it all, fae, gargoyle, dragons, magic and more! and I can't wait to dive into book 2, easy 5 stars for me! If this is not on your neverending TBR, then it needs to be! (And bumped to the top)
