ACOTAR... but with magic.
I am seated!
I loved this. The magic system was perfect for me. Totally accessible but really interesting!
The characters were an excellent adjustment too, there are way too many romantasy characters in their 20s!
This was so addictive and I can't wait to read more from Stevens!

WOW JUST WOW!!!
This was absolutely an incredible adventure in to a world I never want to leave…
I have not felt this way about a book since iron flame/acotar!
This truly kept me wanting more and more of this outstanding story. The characters were just brilliant and I loved every single one of them. They all had such an amazingly strong bond that will not be broken easily, their difference and personality just made it even better. Was filled with action that made you want to join in the fight, twist I definitely didn’t expect at all, sadness and happiness all wrapped in to one amazing piece.🖤
I can’t wait for you all to dive in to this world and experience it all too. And I can’t wait to see what else is to come from this brilliant author… ✨

This story will keep you engaged from beginning to end. Think ACOTAR/TOG vibes. To start, the first MFC you meet is an older woman, and I loved that so much. I’m not in my 20s anymore and Lenna was very relatable. But not only do you have one MFC, you have three and they are fierce in their own ways. There was also magical creatures that I hadn’t been introduced to yet in a story and it really gave this a fresh feel on fantasy.

The world building and unbreakable bonds between the characters makes you wish you could visit the kingdoms and hang out with them all. The amount of detail given to the story made this play out like a movie in my head.

Katerina did a wonderful job explaining the back story and answering all the questions you might have. The twists were unexpected and I look forward to following the characters on their next journey.

The best part of this story is how its told from different perspectives. My favorite character was Leena. Its not often that fantasy stories have the main character not be or become the royal in the kingdom and I really liked that about this story. The characters were so fun to read and the world is intriguing. I'm excited to see where this story goes especially after the ending.

Queens of Spells and Stone swept me right out of my reading slump.
I devoured it in just two days, which feels like magic in itself.
This book was such an adventure. The pacing kept me hooked, the writing was fun, and every chapter pulled me deeper into a world of political intrigue, dangerous magic, and found family.
Lenna stole my heart. She's a middle-aged FMC in a loveless marriage, only to discover the dreams haunting her may not be just dreams. Her courage, resilience, and journey of self-discovery were powerful and so refreshing to see in a fantasy world where normally I feel like so many FMC's are teenagers/early 20s.
Esmeray was another standout. She was sharp, witty, and delightfully snarky with a soft heart beneath her hard exterior. And then we have Laurent and Merrick, who were my favorite longtime besties. Together, this group created the kind of found family dynamic that makes my heart so happy.
What I loved most was the balance: court politics and monsters in disguise on one hand, banter and warmth on the other. It was the kind of story that felt both darkly enchanting and wildly fun. Ugh I want to reread it again already.
The ending left me desperate for more. I need more of these characters, more of this world, more sass from Merrick, and more of Esmeray's bite. Luckily, the sequel is waiting for me and I can't wait to dive back in.
If you love fantasy that's fast-paced, adventurous, and brimming with heart,
Queens of Spells and Stone needs to be on your TBR.

Queens of Spells and Stone opens The Vessels of the Gods Series with ambition. There’s threads of political intrigue and forbidden magic. It’s a dark fantasy that feels epic, but also intimate.
The multi-POV is definitely a strong feature. With a third person narration but also first person narration, depending on the POV that we are on. It took me some time to get used to the change, but it didn’t actively bother me.

PLOT:
There’s 3 main stories that obviously come together.
The twin princesses - their rivalry drives the political intrigue part of the book, both women are shaped by prophecy which builds tension between them.
The disgraced guards - two soldiers that carry the weight of failure and regret, leading them to investigate further.
The middle aged noblewoman - the most unexpected and refreshing POV to me, Lenna finds her life unraveling as visions awaken inside her, bringing her arc into an amazing transformation.
The pacing serves the plot well: slow at the first half, exploring the different POV’s; accelerated second half, with layered revelations, betrayals and violence.

CHARACTERS:
Lenna is definitely the standout. Her journey from subdued housewife to a woman forced to face terrifying truths about her own capabilities is empowering. She is flawed, compassionate and so deeply human. The depiction of her age, of her grief and of her craving for purpose makes her one of the most powerful fantasy protagonists for me.
The princesses are opposing interpretations of power (I won’t say which one is which because of spoilers), one is ruthless and manipulative, while the other is desperate for autonomy yet bound to politics. Their rivalry reminded me of a classic Cain vs Abel archetypes.
The former guards, Merrick and Laurent, bring a sense of camaraderie and found family early on. Their arcs are not fully mapped out, but I’m enjoying both of them so far.
Sparrow is a refreshing character in the story, while also bringing some mystery with her.

WORLD BUILDING:
I really enjoyed the world building aspect of this book. Irridessen, The Slate Kingdom and all of the world just feels layered and lived in already. The fae and the gargoyles is such a nice duality, bringing the questions of identity and inheritance to the book. How much of what we are is chosen versus destined?

Overall, Queens of Spells and Stone is not a light fantasy, it’s dark and layered. Morally complex characters, slow burn relationships and a richly building world.

Thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader 🖤 I knew from the very first sentence that this book was going to be beautifully written with incredible world-building - and I was not disappointed. I was captivated by the character’s bonds and fierce loyalty to each other plus Katerina gave us not one, not two, but THREE BADASS FMCs. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a middle-aged protagonist, but I felt Lenna was easy to connect with and I was rooting for her to find herself again and come into her power. I do feel like I wish I had a little more back story to some of the characters, but I imagine we will continue learning in the books to come. An amazing debut! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Thank you to author Katerina Stevens and Rattle the Stars PR for providing an advanced reader copy of Queen of Spells and Stone in exchange for an honest review

Queen of Spells and Stone was such a fun read! As the first installment in the Vessels of Gods series, this book is like the Princess Bride meets Stardust with a satisfyingly spicy ending.

The story follows Lenna, a lonely housewife trapped in an abusive marriage at Doortan Estate. Her life changes completely when a gargoyle appears and tells her she is the new Oracle, destined to travel to the magical realm of Irridessen. Suddenly, she’s thrown into a world filled with fae, gargoyles, powerful magic, and a murder mystery that could change the kingdom forever.

Twin sisters Adara and Esmeray.. half fae, half gargoyle.. are both heirs to the Opal Kingdom throne. While Adara craves power, Esmeray has little desire to rule. To settle the question of succession, the King and Queen decree that whichever princess soul bonds with a mate first will inherit the crown.

But when Esmeray soul bonds with Commander Keerian of the King’s Guard, the kingdom spirals into chaos. Her parents are murdered, she is framed for their deaths, Keerian is imprisoned, and Esmeray is forced into exile while narrowly escaping capture.

Now Esmeray must clear her name, free her imprisoned mate, and reclaim her stolen throne from her sister before Adara succumbs completely to forbidden ancient magic. With the kingdom turning against her, Lenna, the Oracle, may be Esmeray’s only hope of proving the truth. But time is running out. Esmeray must return to court before her sister steals her mate and destroys anyone who dares oppose her.

This book had everything I love in a fantasy.. high-stakes, fae politics, handsome sexy gargoyles, magic, soul bonds, betrayal, and nonstop action. The pacing kept me hooked from beginning to end, and I’m excited to dive into book two!

Queens of Spells and Stone completely took me by surprise—in the best way. I went into it curious, but I didn’t expect to be so instantly pulled into the story. One of the first things that made me fall in love with this book was the main character. She’s a middle-aged, plus-sized woman—finally! A fantasy heroine who isn’t a teenage chosen one or a twenty-something assassin. Instead, she’s wise, flawed, real, and still on a journey of self-discovery. It was so refreshing to see an actual adult take center stage in a world of dragons, fae, and gargoyles.

The story itself is fast-paced and packed with adventure, magic, and plenty of emotional depth. I loved how the author wove multiple POVs throughout the book—it gave me a chance to connect with different characters and see this incredible world from various angles. The world-building is immersive without being overwhelming, and the pacing kept me turning pages long after I should’ve gone to bed. There are themes of identity, found family, empowerment, and the power of choosing your own path, even later in life.

This book doesn’t just deliver on fantasy; it also brings heart, nuance, and representation that the genre sorely needs more of. If you're craving a magical world that doesn't feel like a copy-and-paste of every other fantasy book—and a heroine who breaks the mold—Queens of Spells and Stone should be on your radar. I can’t wait to see what Katerina Stevens writes next.

Queens Of Spells And Stone is a great debut fantasy.
It took me a bit to get right into it, but once it got to the bones it really picked up.
Quite a clever and alluring world, with an intriguing back story. The world building is well done, clear, and easy to visualize. The politics, mystery, and battles of the plot really carried the story along.
A middle-aged protagonist is quite refreshing. Her human journey in the foreign realm is so engaging and descriptive, I could really relate to her emotions surrounding her story line.
With more than one FMC the story really gave girl-power vibes in the best way. The male MC’s were pretty bad-ass too and their friendship was heart-warming.
I enjoyed the fae/gargoyle mix of beings and how their unique magic played a part in their characters development.

Some of the twists I did see coming and I was a bit thrown off by the switching of 3rd and 1st person POV.
Overall I really enjoyed the read and would recommend it. I definitely need to see what comes next for these fantastic characters!

I really enjoyed this one! There were a lot of things to love in this one - multiple POVs, morally grey characters, a middle aged FMC, found family, political intrigue, fated mates, fae, gargoyles, strong FMCs, an oracle & a seer, prophecies, angst romance, sibling rivalry, and more!

I love when we get multiple POVs. Honestly, the more people I can be in the heads of while I’m reading, the better. For me, I feel like it really helps me fully immerse myself in the story when it’s done well, and Katerina Stevens definitely did that well in this book.

The story and plot felt unique, and the world building was rich. This dark fantasy had layers, as did all our main characters.

I loved that the found families blended together into one, and this group felt unstoppable once they were all together. I’m excited to see the different arcs of all our favorite characters as the series progresses.

We got plenty of action in this one as well, and the final big battle between sisters towards the end kept me on the edge of my seat.

This was a great start to the Vessels of the Gods series, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next! ✨

i kind of knew going into this that i was going to love this book, and boy was i right! not only does the debut fantasy have fae and dragons, but it has GARGOYLES. in my opinion, a hugely underrated and under appreciated character type that more people should be exploring!

i loved the world building of this story. i loved the different kingdoms (and am so hoping that some of the ones we didn’t get to explore show up later in the series). i loved the way the author told this story. the different povs and the characters were easy to follow and made the story that much more enjoyable.

and let me just talk about the characters - specifically the women/females. i. loved. them. adored them. our fmcs are strong, independent, caring, and badass. they’re well-rounded, fully fleshed characters. so often in media women are depicted as just one thing. i loved getting to see the bonds form between the women of this story.

i absolutely cannot wait to read the next one.

“Her power was truth, her sword an oddly shaped rock, and her spoils the potential for a life in these lands.”

This was a fantastic fantasy story! I absolutely loved that the fate of the kingdom rests in the hands of our newly ‘awakened’ oracle FMC who is whisked away to the land of fae and gargoyles. But did I mention that she’s 51 years old?! It’s so great to have a character going on adventures with beings who have such long lifespans that actually has some wisdom and life experience of her own rather than being some young and naïve girl. This story has a bit of everything: dragons, magic, a murder mystery, fae, gargoyles, and royal fated mates. This is a great story for fantasy lovers!

Queens of Spells and Stone was one of my most anticipated books on my TBR and I enjoyed it so much. I will definitely be reading the other three books in the Vessels of the Gods series.

When we are introduced to Lenna, I was confused as to how she could fit into a world filled with magic when her own had none. I was so surprised by how she was pulled into a realm of magic, and ultimately thrived in it. It was also refreshing to have a middle-aged FMC rather than one that is young and spry.

I loved the family that built up seamlessly around Lenna. It seemed so natural and authentic, and perfect after she had been surrounded by so much indifference throughout her marriage.

The world building was brilliant and I enjoyed the contrast between the Slate Kingdom and Irridessen. Slate Kingdom is so drab in comparison to the vivid world of Irridessen. The explanation that the lack of magic has caused Slate Kingdom to decline is brilliant and unique. I cannot wait to see more of Stevens’ world!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced story filled with sass and intrigue. The characters were fantastic and easy to love and the world was wonderfully immersive.

The book took me by surprise and left me wanting book 2.

It took me a bit to really get hooked in the story, but once that happened, I didn't want to put it down. The story is heavily character driven, and falls more on the fantasy side than romance. There are so many things to love with this story: good world building, multiple PoVs, layered magic systems, found family, political intrigue, fated mates, a middle-aged plus sized FMC, and much more.

All in all, this was a great read!

This was a fantastic debut novel. I loved the characters, I thought the world building was well written and explained in depth enough without feeling like there was constant overwhelming info dumps, the plot was so intriguing I didn’t want to put it down once I started!

I did see this marketed as a fantasy romance so I feel like I have to mention if you are going into this *specifically* for the romance aspect you may be a bit disappointed (there IS romance, but that’s not necessarily the primary focus), but if you are looking for a story where some badass individuals team up to uncover the truth behind the murder of the late king and queen, then download this one ASAP.

Her debut word art blew me away!

I never knew I needed gargoyles added to my fantasy reading but, they are an integral part of fantasy and developed so well in this book. From the FMCs to the MMCs each character brought to life a story I was intrigued by and didn’t want to put down…ugh Mom life sometimes.

I cannot wait for more, praying it’s not long til we get it! 🐉🧚‍♀️🗡️Way to go Katerina Stevens!

Queens of Spells and Stone by Katerina Stevens is an absolute gem! The story pulls you into the magic-filled continent of Irridessen, where two princesses must embrace their inner strength to vie for the title of Queen on High. The plot is rich with intrigue, and the characters are so well-crafted that you can't help but get invested in their journeys. With fae, dragons, and a richly built world, this story completely pulled me in. The themes of loyalty and power struggles kept me hooked, and the characters felt so real. The world-building is stunning, making every scene come to life. I couldn't put it down and can't wait for more from this author.

For this being this authors first book, I am in awe. I fell in love with each character, who they were, who they wanted to be. Their battles. Their relationships. Their power. I was able to paint a clear picture of these characters and play out this book like I myself was living in their world. I loved the pace of the book. It never got ‘boring’. I always wanted to then to the next page.

Once I got to the last page, I kept clicking for MORE!! I cannot wait for book #2. Until then, I will think of this book and the amazing story told until I can find out what happens next.

I received this as an ARC while I was reading a different book and I was really excited and looking forward to starting it. It sounded right up my alley and seemed to have a fresh take on Fantasy romance with its 52 year old curvy FMC.

Now, I don’t know if it’s because I had built up expectations for this book, considering I had it for a week before I could start it and had made it up in my mind to be the new big thing, but I was unfortunately underwhelmed once I got to reading.

This is in no way to say that the book was not good or not worth reading. All in all, it was a fun read and did entertain me – I just found there to be no big “woaah” moments in the book. I found it a bit long to start, with it only fully captivating me around halfway through. I felt that not much happened in the first half, and it had me wondering where it was going. The second half of the book was a different story; it felt as if everything happened between the middle and the end of the book, which did make it a lot more fun to read.

Another point that I found a bit lacking was the characters, with there only being 1 character I found myself caring for towards the end. The others, in my opinion, were slightly dull – however, considering this is only the first book in a series, I’m sure we’ll have a lot more time to start getting attached to the characters.
My last note is that the plot turned out to be predictable, which left little space for unexpected twists. The story itself was quite interesting and really made up 90% of my rating. The cliffhanger was also a big factor, with it being completely unexpected and I was genuinely shocked and left wondering once that last page hit.

Though there might have been a little bit of dragging or some underwhelming characters, I still think this book is absolutely worth reading and a series to keep your eye on. I’m interested to see what its future holds and will definitely be waiting for the next book to arrive!

✨ Slow burn
✨ Morally grey
✨ Middle aged FMC
✨ Found family
✨ Fated mates
✨ Strong AF FMCs
✨ Angsty romance
✨ Oracle & Seer Prophecies
✨ Sibling rivalry

This book was soo good. I really enjoyed this one.
I absolutely loved every character in this book except for Leon IYKYK!

We have 3 FMCS in this book. Leena, Esmeray and Adara.

This book draws you in at the very beginning with a middle aged FMC Lenna who is troubled by horrific dreams.. but are they really dreams.
I loved Leena unfortunately hasn’t had the best life trapped in a loveless marriage and wants to get out so bad.
By the end of this book Leena is a real badass FMC.

Adara and Esmeray are twin princess with a terrible case of sibling rivalry. One wants to be crowned Queen and the other doesn’t.
Gotta love some sibling rivalry!!
Both of these FMC’s had big personalities. Couldn’t be any more opposite.

Then we have our MMC’s Keerian, Merrick and Laurent they are soldiers that have fought together for the longest time.

Laurent is the spy master, I really enjoyed his character. He is our portal master.

Merrick is a gargoyle with a draw weapon first and ask questions later attitude. I think Merrick was probably my fav MMC he lets everyone know what he thinks. And will protect his friends at all costs.

Keerian is a golden gargoyle, who only has eyes for one lady!

“Horns and all, my love.”

And then you have Sparrow, Esmeray’s oldest friend, she is fierce and loyal and she will tell you what to do and you won’t question her. I really enjoyed her character.

The world building in this book was fantastic! Really descriptive and beautifully written.I loved the magic system. Very unique.

The found family element of this book was outstanding! It shows just what people will do to protect their family.

The plot was fantastic fast paced and action packed in the second half of the book.

We get gargoyles, fae and even dragons what more could you ask for.

The end of this book leaves us on a cliffhanger.
Cannot wait to read the rest of this series.

Highly recommend!

Thank you to the author for this fantastic book!

Where do I start? This book took hold of me in so many ways!

You'll find fated mates, found family, fun banter, and a cast of main characters rather than just one or two.

The story starts off with Lenna, who is stuck in an abusive and unloving marriage to a Lord. I immediately started rooting for her with the emotional response I had due to her situation. Her personality was clearly dulled by her marriage, and she was isolated from outsiders with few friends or options for getting out of the situation.

Merrick enters the picture to collect Lenna, because she is the new Oracle for Terramere. Lenna is human, and had no idea magic existed. Merrick frustrated me at first, with his non-answers to Lenna's many questions. He softens up with some help of Laurent, who is more up front with helping Lenna understand this new-to-her world.

Aside from a little bit of background on Merrick and Laurent, their characters take a bit of a back seat in the story- we don't really get to see what makes them tick. I'm hoping this is developed out in the next book(s), because I want to see them get a HEA!

The story then turns to Esmeray and Keerian, who are fated mates parted just a week after finding each other. The rest of the book is focused on rescuing Keerian from Esmeray's twin sister Adara. Esmeray's character is complex and strong. She's cunning in a good way, and plays to her strengths to reach her goals. I found myself rooting for her after again having a deep emotional reaction to her circumstances. Despite having the cards stacked against her, she doesn't give up, and she leans on her close friend Sparrow along with Lenna, Merrick and Laurent to save Keerian and the kingdom.

I enjoyed a glimpse into this world, along with a unique magic system. The building of the emotional toll of both Lenna and Esmeray was done so well. There were plot twists, battle scenes, and fun group banter. This was not a spicy book, which is just fine with me. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next!
