Book One of the Nightingale Trilogy Anne Slade was born from tragedy—and reborn in the dark. Years after a brutal night stole everything from her, Anne returns to the world not as a victim, but as a weapon. Trained in silence, molded by vengeance, and driven by a list of names written in blood, she is prepared to burn down the world if it brings her closer to the truth. But nothing is ever that simple. When two brothers with secrets of their own cross her path, Anne is pulled into a far deadlier game. One touches something soft and long-buried in her heart. The other sees the monster she’s become—and doesn’t flinch. But as the lines between desire, loyalty, and vengeance blur, Anne must ask will she choose one of them... or will she choose herself? As alliances shift and truths unravel, Anne must confront not just the enemies in front of her, but the ghosts that refuse to stay buried. Because the real threat is closer than she thinks, and the deeper she digs, the more she
Revenge is never clean. And survival always comes at a cost.
Looking for a strong FMC which has a dark past and determined to take revenge on those who hurt her, throw in 2 strong MMC’s which happens to be brothers and set on the same revege, then this is for you.
Learning about Anne and her tortured past and how she used that to grow is inspiring even though she still has a lot of pain to work through.
Normally I like the morally grey MMC but I am team Ryder.
I didn’t like that she wanted revenge on Storm and Layla but she ended up doing the exact same thing to Ryder. That disappointed me tbh!
It is a good read and enjoyed the plot. The development of the book could’ve been faster but was still enjoyable.
If you're a fan of dark romances, Revenge If The Nightingale by T.A Van. dyk is a thrilling ride you won’t want to miss
Tropes Enemies to lovers Revenge Dark romance Unhinged Morally grey Stalker Love triangle Obsessive possesive love Slow burn 🔥
I couldn't put this book down! It had me hooked from the very beginning until the end! I love a good enemies to lovers romance, brownie points if the guy falls first and the woman is in danger!!! The book was well written. Characters were well developed and believable. Twists and turns kept you guessing. So many emotions were felt while reading this
This story follows Anne who lost her parent’s they have bern murdered right in front of her at a young age. And it was just she and her older brother left. She spiralled after the deaths of her father and mother. Her older brother decided to sent her away. But boy she came back for blood and revenge!!
Then there is Ryder and Lykon who also lost they’re mother, father and baby sis. They went through some things that also came with trauma that also resulted in to revenge
But… they are after the same person?… Wel you have to read this book 5 stars from me!!
Revenge of the Nightingale by TA van Dyk was honestly everything! From the very first page, it took me on such an emotional ride that I didn’t want to get off. Dark, intense, and completely addictive, it’s one of those books that just stays with you.
What I loved most is that it’s not only emotional and dark, but it also had me laughing out loud a few times (the giant inflatable banana peel scene still makes me giggle 🤭).
The characters were incredible. They felt so real, and I found myself completely wrapped up in their journeys. And let’s just say it now… I am definitely Team Lykon all the way.
If you’re a dark romance reader, this is an absolute must-read. It’s emotional, funny in the best unexpected ways, and will leave you desperate for more. I honestly can’t wait for book 2!
If you like •Dark romance •Strong FMC (with a traumatic past) •one golden retriever MMC and one Dark morally grey but also funny MMC that loves Taylor Swift 🤭 •Revenge •slow burn •one bed forced proximity •crazy love proclamation Then you will love this.
Alot of action in the start and at the end. Ends on a major cliffhanger. The middle is a lot about getting to know the characters and their past and how they end up on the same path for revenge.
For a first time author TA Van Dyk, this was an awesome book. Looking forward to book 2.
Revenge of the Nightingale by T.A. van Dyk is a dark, emotionally charged debut that blends revenge, romance, and raw humanity. The story follows Anne Slade, who, after a brutal night that stole everything from her, returns not as a victim but as a weapon. Trained in silence and driven by vengeance, Anne is prepared to burn down the world to uncover the truth. Her path intertwines with two brothers, Ryder and Lykon, each harboring their own secrets and traumas. As alliances shift and truths unravel, Anne must confront not just her enemies but the ghosts that refuse to stay buried. The novel explores themes of resilience, the complexities of human emotion, and the blurred lines between desire, loyalty, and vengeance.
Such a great book to read. It's filled with comedy, action, romance and the sort of revenge that digs so deep you need to continue reading to discover where it all began. I can not wait for the second book to release. It is a must read for all Dark Romance lovers. Well done T.A van Dyk
Uhm why is this not BookTok's newest obsession?? This had me in an absolute chokehold from page one.
Anne, our FMC is exquisitely unhinged, vengeful and absolutely iconic. Her journey is dark, intense, and utterly addictive. The slow burn?? PAINFUL in the best way. And don’t even get me started on the love triangle. Ryder and Lykon? Major Stefan vs. Damon energy, for which I was seated, locked in, and overly emotionally invested. The writing was so beautifully executed it felt like I actually entered their universe. The characters? Morally grey and MESSY. Just how I like them.
If you love dark romance that keeps you on edge and just a tiny bit unwell, you need this in your life. I need book two immediately!! 😭
Thank you so much to T.A. van Dyk for letting me read an early copy. I’m genuinely honoured. 🖤
this was one of the best books I have ever read The author blew me out of my boots. from the characters to the plot. Great book can't wait to read more of her books.
From the first page to the final devastating cliffhanger, this book is a searing character-driven story that blends trauma, vengeance, and forbidden love into a high-stakes narrative full of grit, emotional turmoil, and sharp-edged intimacy.
Anne Slade is the beating heart of this story, a haunted, emotionally fractured protagonist who commands attention from the moment she enters the page. After surviving the traumatic, unexplained murder of her parents at the hands of the elusive villain Kaius, Anne is raised by her protective older brother Rowan. Her life from then on is defined by pain, discipline, and control, or the illusion of it. She’s not a typical heroine. She’s a weapon honed by trauma, not hope.
What makes Anne compelling isn’t just her black-hair-grey-eyes aesthetic or her lethal combat skill with a katana called Solovey (which means Nightingale in Russian); it’s how the T.A van Dyk never flinches away from her rawness. She wrote it with such passion. Anne is sarcastic to a fault, self-sabotaging, and emotionally barricaded. She attends therapy reluctantly (thanks to a court mandate), battles panic attacks with blood, punching, and violence, and pushes everyone away, including the reader at times. And yet, she’s magnetic. She's what Katniss Everdeen would be like if she'd grown up in a psychiatric facility and joined the army.
Enter Ryder, the golden-retriever energy love interest who brings warmth and light to Anne’s otherwise grim world. Their relationship is a slow build, and though predictable in its early sweetness, it serves as a sharp contrast to Anne’s darker impulses. Ryder is the kind of man who doesn’t try to fix Anne, he just stays. That presence means everything… until the rug gets pulled out.
Because then, there’s Lykon.
Dark-haired, green eyed and haunted, simmering with emotional repression, Lykon is the classic “black cat energy” bad boy, but with surprising depth. He’s not just a foil to Ryder; he’s an echo of Anne herself. Also scarred by Kaius’s brutality (having lost his entire family), Lykon’s obsession with revenge is eerily parallel to Anne’s. Their chemistry is electric, the kind of slow-burn enemies-to-lovers tension that smolders under every shared glance and barbed comment.
The emotional climax between them, where Lykon confesses he’s been in love with Anne since they met on a Ferris wheel when she was 18, hits hard. It reframes every interaction they’ve ever had. Suddenly, this isn’t just a love triangle. It’s a collision course between fate and choice, trauma and healing.
The multiple POV's and past to present back to past really hit, giving just enough to have you question everything.
Plot-wise, the book builds momentum gradually but keeps a taut tension throughout. The hunt for Kaius is both the literal and emotional backbone of the story. And while Kaius remains an elusive figure, more a shadow than a character at times, his presence is felt on every page. He’s the puppet master pulling strings, ultimately leading to a brutal final act where Ryder is kidnapped, Lykon is shot, and Anne is taken.
That cliffhanger? Ruthless. But brilliant.
Thematically, the story dives deep into the psychology of trauma, survival, and identity. Therapy scenes (even if brief) add authenticity to Anne’s internal struggle. The romance(s) are messy and complicated, but intentionally so, they don’t offer easy resolutions, only emotional truth. Anne’s growth is subtle but significant, and even as she remains volatile and violent, there’s a sense she’s starting to want more than just vengeance.
What Worked:
Strong, layered female lead with a believable trauma arc
Tense love triangle with authentic emotional stakes
Action sequences and combat training that feel earned
Excellent pacing toward a high-impact ending
Smart use of symbolism (e.g., the katana as identity and control)
Final Thoughts:
This story is not for the faint of heart. It’s for readers who love broken characters learning to live with their scars, morally grey decisions, and emotionally fraught relationships that feel a little too real. If you’re into that, this book will hit every nerve in the best way.
And that ending? I’m already clawing for the sequel.

This book. This book gripped me and refused to let go.
This book has all the tropes I love to read about and I was hooked.
Strong but fragile female character - Anne Slade - who is badass with a past trauma that is hauntingly deep and devastating. She is out for revenge and has worked for years to accomplish her goal. Having only her brother Rowan to support her through her darkness. That was before we meet the loveable golden retriever male character - Ryder - he is a sweetheart, the logical and diplomatic one of the bunch. A tech wizard and so good. Then we have Lykon - Dangerous, burn the world, touch her and you die energy but has a playful humor about him with those he trusts. Also on a mission for revenge, he appears in her life and is on a mission to push all of Anne's buttons until she punches him.
The characters are well thought out, the story is good and keeps you gripped to know what happens. There are twists and turns everywhere. T.A. Van Dyk does not spell it out for you, and if you look close enough the realization hits you hard. The interlinking characters and how they all play a part in the story is inspiring.
This book, will make you laugh. It will make you cry. You will want to throw it across the room a few times (don't worry I would never do that). It makes you warm and fuzzy. It gives you so many feels.
T.A van Dyk - You have a reader for as many years and for as many books as you can write.
Thank you, T.A Van Dyk for giving me the exclusive opportunity to read this novel.
The story starts with Anne Slade a young woman who has been molded by the tragedy of her parents death, driven by guilt and the need to avenge their death. Anne is sure that the death of her parents happened at the will of her uncle Kaius. Years after their death Anne returns older, wiser, no longer a victim of that tragic night but as a weapon of mass destruction seeking truth. The slow burn possibility of a love triangle romance between Anne and two brother Ryder and Lykon, as their paths cross with the same enemy in mind... Kaius. Ryder and Lykon each with their own secrets. The three of them suck each other into a dangerous mission where the thin line between loyalty, revenge and desire blur. Anne's haunting past twisting itself into her future, a future she doesn't think she's entitled to. Anne's determination is a wonderful masterpiece forged from everything that was set out to destroy her. This is a gripping page-turner that I devoured in one sitting. I couldn't get enough of it. I feel as if I should keep re-reding it in hopes to find answers that only part two could give me. An absolute 10/10 read with a wattpad like nostalgia where love isn't something you can control. The heart wants what it wants. My page is called Midnight Chapter With Danni for a reason, because I will seek the ending as long as the pages have gripped me.
l rollercoaster I wasn’t ready for — and I loved every second of it!"
From the very first few chapters, I was hooked. The mystery, the emotion, the intensity — it had me asking questions from page one. What on earth were their parents up to with all the secrecy and late-night disappearances? And Rowan… I’m still not sure I trust him 👀
Anne frustrated me at times, but once her truth came out, my heart absolutely broke for her. The way the author peeled back those layers — wow. I just wanted to hug her through the pages. 😢
And then there’s Lykon. I will never be able to listen to a Taylor Swift song again without thinking of him 🥺😍. The chemistry, the tension, the heartbreak — it all felt real. I was convinced one of them wouldn’t make it to the end, and that ending?? I’m still not okay. NO. They cannot be gone.
This story consumed me so much that I was literally talking about it with my husband trying to figure out all the unanswered questions — like who betrayed them, how Layla and Storm got tangled with Kiaus, and what on earth Kiaus is really mixed up in. I need answers. I need book two.
It’s emotional, chaotic, mysterious, and completely addictive. I’m still reeling — and I’m so ready for more.
wow—what a gripping book! 🌙✨ The story pulls you in immediately with its dark, atmospheric setting and mysterious characters. T.A. van Dyk masterfully mixes suspense with hints of hidden pasts, keeping you on edge and hungry to know more. If you love twisted secrets, tension that builds page by page, and a story that lingers long after you close the book, this one’s for you.
Let's rank up the tension! ⚡ Secrets unravel, alliances shift, and the suspense is practically electric. T.A. van Dyk keeps the twists coming, making it impossible to put the book down. Dark, thrilling, and utterly addictive—these chapters prove the story is only getting more intense.
I loved this book and loved that this book was not smutty. Yes the suspense and the yearning is freaking amazing and when the finale "fuck it" moment happens. Holy cow this is def what we are here for and THEN......... The book ends on a cliff hanger. I hate a cliffhanger cause I can just not wait for the next one hahahahaha. That is the only reason I gave it a 4.5 and not a 5 star hahahahah. But thank goodness book 2 comes out end of October (go check it out!!) as I can not wait to read more about our amazing kick ass FMC and our 2 MMC characters
.A. Van Dyk’s Revenge of the Nightingale is a hauntingly beautiful descent into vengeance, survival, and the fragility of the human psyche. With prose that sings like poetry and cuts like a blade, Van Dyk delivers a tale that is as emotionally devastating as it is empowering.
The characters are richly layered, particularly the Nightingale herself— her trauma becomes a weapon. The narrative flows with a cinematic intensity, blending gothic atmosphere, psychological depth, and dark romance into something truly unforgettable. Lykon is the new book boyfriend! Totally obsessed.
What sets this novel apart is the way Van Dyk explores the cost of pain and the price of reclaiming power. It’s not just a story of revenge—it’s a story of resurrection. Every chapter pulses with tension. The ending of the book ends on such a cliffhanger, my heart broke.

Revenge of the Nightingale is the debut book and the first book in the nightingale trilogy by local South African author T.A Van Dyk
We follow Anne Slade, ruthless, sarcastic and dealing with her own demons after one night when everything was ripped from her.
Enter two brothers, Ryder our Golden Retriever who brings out the softer side in her and Lykon, quick witted, sharp, ruthless. He sees the darkness in her and embraces it.
The 3 work together hunting for the one person who stole something from them all… but at what cost
OMW how do I do this review without leaving any spoilers....
This was sooooo good it deserves more than 5 stars 🌟
Dark Romance, with a Fierce as he'll FMC and the 2 MMC 1 is a Golden Retriever the other Morally Grey but deep down he feels all the feels
Oooo the tension between Lykon and Anne 🤤 u can cut it with a blunt butter knife 🔪 but he can't do anything about it because its his baby brothers gf...
Don't even get me started on the steamy scene on the hood of a car in the middle of the highway while they got stuck in a rain storm 😍
And the cliffhanger... I need book 2 like in yesterday 😩
This was a good book, alot of questions like who is the bad guy why can't she get him (also how easily she gets sidetracked by pretty boys)questions that just aren't answered but I hear the second book gives clarity, so I will give it a 4 star and change it if the second book can get the hype back and I get my answers. I enjoyed annes story, the pacing was just allitle all over the place, fast then slow then fast, I needed more spice in book one, the behind the closet bull is not it for me, such a great story needs to be expressed. I can't wait for the 2nd book the hype and rave about how dark and delicious it is makes me neeeeed it now!
Omg biggest cliffhanger, had me on the edge of my bed reading this! The squeals, the giggles and the tears I gave for this book was sooo worth it! Lykon is now on my top 10 book boyfriends! Aaaaah I need the second book like I need air! 5 stars for the fierce badass female this author created, the emotional trauma I could feel breath through the words on the pages! Thank you for another unforgettable reading journey
