Six compelling mysteries. One haunted detective. Gripping, atmospheric Welsh crime fiction at its finest.
In the shadow of the Black Mountains, the quiet village of Bryn Melyn harbours secrets that refuse to stay buried. Detective Inspector Winter Meadows, a thoughtful and unorthodox investigator, returns to his roots in rural Wales seeking calm — but finds himself confronting the dark corners of a community still healing from old wounds.
A woman’s traumatic memory resurfaces after a near-fatal fall. A care home becomes the scene of an icy conspiracy. Children vanish, sins of the past echo forward, and each case brings Meadows closer to truths some would kill to keep hidden.
Driven by justice and marked by empathy, Meadows must unravel webs of lies, long-held grudges, and twisted motives. With each case more chilling than the last, he walks the fine line between past and present, personal and professional — and learns that sometimes, the deepest scars are the ones you can't see.
This six-book box set includes the following titles: 1. THE SILENT QUARRY 2. FROZEN MINDS 3. SUFFER THE CHILDREN 4. A KNOT OF SPARROWS 5. LIES OF MINE 6. RISE TO THE FLY
Meet DI Winter Meadows Not your typical policeman. Winter Meadows is intuitive, reflective, and quietly brilliant. A former London detective who left the Met in search of peace, he now finds solace in the rhythms of the Welsh countryside — and the occasional joint to unwind. But beneath his calm exterior lies a sharp mind, a dry wit, and a fierce determination to protect the innocent. He connects with victims others overlook and spots details others miss. Meadows doesn’t chase the spotlight — but when it comes to justice, he won’t rest until the truth is uncovered.
Cheryl Rees-Price was born in Cardiff and moved as a Young child to a small ex-mining village on the edge of the Black Mountains, South Wales, where she still lives with her husband, daughters and two cats. After leaving school she worked as a legal clerk for several years before leaving to raise her two daughters.
Cheryl returned to education, studying philosophy, sociology and accountancy whilst working as a part time book keeper. She now works as a finance director for a company that delivers project management and accounting services.
In her spare time Cheryl indulges in her passion for writing, the success of writing plays for local performances gave her the confidence to write her first novel. Her other hobbies include walking and gardening which free her mind to develop plots and create colourful characters.
Winter Meadows, brought up with his brother Rain, In a commune. How did he go from that to policeman? Certainly a different take on crime storylines.
Characters are well thought out, with decent back stories, but not overdone. Sometimes the writer gets too involved with back stories but these are well fitted in and don't detract from the criminal story.
Enjoyed reading this set and would be happy to read more by this author. Stories were varied, Winter leads from the front and manages to hold a divergent squad together. Enough so that when given a promotion his squad went with him.
Great characters. Great team of investigators who not only work together but actually care for one another. Keeps you guessing till the end. You will enjoy reading them and look forward to reading more.
Interesting characters and storylines. I like reading British mysteries; this is the first set I’ve read that take place in Wales. Thoroughly enjoyed reading these books.
