I am definitely a book nerd where my favorite pastime is getting lost in a good book and my biggest bookish problem is convincing my husband that I need to buy more book shelves. The other part of my bookish life is that I am also a research nerd. I will find a subject that fascinates me or applies practically to my life and I will read everything that I can find until I know the subject inside and out. As I enter my late 40's and I started to experience depleting hormones and muscle strength, a lack of sleep, unexpected weight gain and debilitating migraines, I began to enter into the world of researching perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. I wanted to learn how I could attain my health again and diminish my symptoms. This is one of the book's that I have read on this journey.
Trim Healthy Wisdom is an excellent source and book to give you many practical ways to guide women through the different phases of hormonal changes. My research nerdy heart was delighted with the almost 1,000 pages of information and well researched studies that had pragmatic answers to many of my questions. The authors share many different personal examples that convey the strategies that women can put into place to alleviate symptoms and gain back a healthier stance. I appreciated how the authors emphasized that every woman is different and so the approach for health in this stage of life might look different for each woman depending on what she is struggling with as she walks through this season of her life.
This book is must read in my opinion for any woman who is 40 years old or older and wants to read a comprehensive guide about their journey with hormones. Even if you don't agree with everything the book presents, it still is quite helpful to have a more in-depth picture of why we experience the various symptoms during this time and the numerous strategies that women have applied successfully.
After reading this book, I have started to implement a couple of practical things that have made a significant difference with my symptoms. I have gone off sugar which has helped any inflammation in my body to be reduced, I have increased my in-take of protein and I have regularly started to lift heavy weights to help gain back my muscle loss. Women in their mid-thirties start losing muscle mass which is connected to many problems we can have in those menopause years. My goal is to slowly create better habits that enhance my health. As I continue to research, I am realizing there isn't any quick fix for my symptoms, but that I am actually on a journey where I can make choices that can improve my health steadily over time. I am learning the importance of giving myself grace during this time and to enjoy this season of my life.
Pearl and Serene, thank you for writing this Wisdom book and for sharing your brilliant research and insights!
Yes, it's a quirky style, but the authors' stories and personality help me remember more health science facts than I would otherwise. They teach in a way that's visual.
This book is written primarily for older women, further on in their hormone journey, but I am thankful these ladies are blazing a trail and providing help for women of all ages.
I love learning most about the healing power of food and the context for things like "MTHFR" and "estrogen" and "insulin" -- all those words thrown around on social media. This book gives really helpful input on some of the pitfalls of intermittent fasting and the trends of cutting out entire food groups.
This book is certainly for serious health nerds, but very grounding, full of hope, positivity, and mind blowing facts about the design of our bodies.
It is a MASSIVE resource (1000 pages), and I haven't finished it yet, but I jump around as different topics feel relevant.
I also appreciate how Pearl and Serene are humble and honest, and I fully trust them to share if they realize they were wrong about something in the past.
This is a good resource book. It was not intended to be read straight through (even though that is what I did.). It's huge.
I do not agree with everything in this book, (the authors' life philosophy/theology is off which makes them go to some extremes in their health and beauty practices) but the book is very well researched and is a helpful resource on aging especially if you are considering Bhrt.
I absolutely loved this book. It is full of solid information with science studies to back up their findings. There is so much wisdom in this book. I am already applying many aspects of it in my personal life.
There is some good information in here, but definitely not 1,000 pages worth. They needed an editor to pair this down to a readable size. I have enjoyed all their other books, but this one rambles all over the place…. I think it’s going to be hard to sell as no one coming into THM as a prospect is going to read this once they see the thick, encyclopedia look of it… theology is also a bit wonky and scriptures taken out of context.
