Novascapes: A Speculative Fiction Anthology from the Hunter Region Australia

Rate this book
Each story in this collection is a brief glimpse into a world both like and unlike anything we could ever imagine. The light and dark aspects of human nature are played out on the canvases of these worlds, though the players are not always human. Minotaurs, mermaids, vampires and dinosaurs compete for space alongside devils, angels, aliens and completely indescribable entities. Novascapes transports you from one side of the multi-verse to the other and leaves you breathless and wide eyed at the possibilities of simple existence.

Novascapes is a collection of short speculative fiction stories by authors either from or originally born (or connected in some major way) to the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast regions of NSW, Australia. The stories are as varied and wonderful as the authors who penned them.

C. E. Page writes emotionally rich, character driven tales of magic and adventure, primarily in the adult epic fantasy genre. Her stories feature demigods and other divinely assisted misfits who would prefer it if megalomaniac fools would stop trying to destroy the known realms in their search for power.

She lives on the east coast of Australia with her partner Evan, their two children, and one of the world’s quirkiest dogs. An avid reader and gamer, she loves devouring a good story in whatever form it takes.

I originally supported this book on Pozible because it contained my friend and crit buddy Aidan's first published story. It also contain a number of stories from authors I am familiar with.

Novascapes is a solid, well composed collection, a great first effort and well worth reading.

I had read a few of the reprints before but they are very strong stories that I enjoyed reading again. I thought the original fiction was very good too. There were only a few stories that didn't quite do it for me, or that I thought needed a bit more tweaking (sometimes working as a writer and editor makes it hard not to view stories in light of how I would have approached them) but a lot of it will come down to personal taste.

As an unthemed anthology, the book is quite diverse in voice and tone so there should be something in here to suit any spec fic lover.

Overall, I thought it was a great showcase of the talent to be found in the Hunter Region!

Disclaimer: this book includes my story "The Eternal Twilight of his Maze" - but don't let that put you off! Newcastle is the current or one-time home of some prodigiously- talented writers, including Margo Lanagan, Kirstyn McDermott and Janeen Webb. Do yourself a favour!

There’s nothing quite as good as a great collection of short stories to give you little mini adventures and insights into strange and mystical worlds. What makes these short stories wonderful are the speculative nature and the fact that each of these authors have created stories that covers so many different narratives no two are alike.

The stories vary in length and there is a mixture of light hearted and darker stories. The speculative fiction aspect makes them wild and fanciful but not too outrageous or unbelievable. There is suspense, magic, and adventure and the range of different characters means you aren’t always reading about humans, even if it speculative humans.

There are dark tales about dark creatures and humorous exhilarating tales about magic and creatures from other world. Each author tells an intriguing story and the collection offers an array of different approaches to the speculative genre. If you are interested in short stories this is a wonderful collection, and a great chance to read some stories of authors that you may have never read before.

A really solid collection of light and dark, short and long. A favourite was Arms Dealer by Ms Page, the editor of the anthology, it had a real Blade Runner feel to it, like a Rob Zombie reimagining of Blade Runner. The collection has lots of historical references to please any nerd.
