I hesitate to rate this book, as I didn't actually read it -- I saw an exhibit of Akiko Hayashi's picture books at the Hiroshima Museum of Art, and it was just her illustrations, no text -- but the pictures are so profound and glorious, and they tell the tale so well, that I feel justified in doing so.

It's an absolutely fabulous book that I think anyone with half a heart would love. It's so full of charm and joy and tiny adventures. I had never heard of this author/illustrator, but I was simply overcome by her beautiful, powerful work. This is my instant favorite of her books.

Love at first sight.

This book was so cute and original! It is originally Japanese, but the English translation is good.

The story is very Japanese and the illustrations are cute but for us the fox looks a lot like a bear.
