Love in Store #1

The Wedding List

Rate this book
You never forget your first love...

With her eye for design and her cut-glass accent, no-one would guess Beth Forrest’s impoverished background. It’s all throw pillows, china patterns, and upper class brides as she manages the Wedding Registry at Pettett & Mayfield, the stately maiden aunt of London department stores. It’s not quite her dream job, but each bride she helps to select beautiful and oh-so-expensive items for their gift list brings her one step closer to buying a little home of her own, and financing the education she longs for.

When physics professor James Tetherton-Hart, brilliant in his research lab but awkward and disorganised in everyday life, comes to the store in desperate need of both a gift and a partner for a wedding that evening and recognises her, all her careful plans and meticulous checklists are turned upside down.

Now her first love is back, determined to make her his partner for life, not just the evening. But unless Beth can let go of the mistaken beliefs that separated them in the past, and appreciate the depth and breadth of God’s love for us all, her only gift from the wedding will be another heartbreak.

Book 1 in the Love In Store series of sweet inspirational romances.

The Wedding List is a novella length prequel to Believe In Me, a semi-finaling entry in Harlequin's So You Think You Can Write contest 2013.

I sometimes find it hard to rate books using this system because so many books are rated 5 - meaning they are AMAZING - I often want to consider the genre of the book. If it is amazing for the type or style of book, like a clean, sweet romance, or a fast moving mystery, or a suspense? I generally think of amazing as a book where the author has done a great deal of research and I have learned a great deal by reading it, and I have also been moved to tears by the characters or even enraged by them. I liked this book - it's a sweet love story with a few twists here and there. I related to the character, Beth, in many ways, but she also frustrated me by her 'poor little me' attitude based on her early life. She was working as a professional in an elite store, she was respectable, she had good friends, and she is approached by the love of her 'past' life and she runs away once again. I liked the story and it was well-done.

The Wedding List by Autumn McArrthur 4 stars

“Nothing had changed. They still couldn’t be together. The gap between them was wider than ever.”

I enjoyed Beth and James' story. It’s just a fun and short read. Beth finds James’ awkwardness endearing. I find it cute and comical at times. It takes Beth a while to overcome her insecurities though. I’m happy with James’ faith and determination to do his best with this opportunity of a second chance.

The Wedding List by Autumn Macarthur is a delightful contemporary Christian tale and part of the Love In Store series but can be read as a stand-alone. It is also in a three-book set entitled Three Weddings.
We witness the power of past hurts to continue to impact present lives. Cruel words spoken cannot be ‘unheard’ or forgotten. We need to learn to give our hurts up to God and move forwards into the future.
There is the theme of trust. We need to be able to trust others and ourselves. We recognize that “sometimes trusting God was the hardest thing to do.” This is where faith and trust sit side by side. If we have faith, we know we can trust God no matter what our circumstances tell us. Just because we cannot see God working does not mean He isn’t. “God wanted her to trust Him.”
We witness pure love within the novel. It is a love that says I love you for who you are and not for what you can do for me.
In contrast we witness lives ruled by power, status and wealth where networking is the order of the day. This builds very shaky foundations for lives. Riches beyond measure are always to be found in love. Judgements are made on class rather than the capacity to love by some characters.
The Wedding List was a positively charming read.
I received a free copy from the author. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Not subtle. The story seemed like a great concept, but the 3rd person omniscient kept going back and forth from Beth to James, telling us everything they were thinking and not offering nearly enough "show" for that much "tell". It also seemed to end rather abruptly with everyone suddenly being nice and sweet with one another, realizing they'd made terrible choices in their lives and wishing, above all, to make amends.

Lovely story about a handsome scientist who is in love with a poor Cinderella type heroine. I adored this sweet tomance that had elements of forgiveness and faith. Wonderful HEA. Also some awesome kissing scenes ;) Highly recommended.

This was a sweet little story that was nice to read on a sick day. However, the characters were a bit shallow. I did like that they were unashamed about their faith, but at times the wording felt a bit forced.

If you are looking for a light Christian romance, this book is a good choice.

The Wedding List is the first book in the Love in Store Series, centering around the workers of the Pettett & Mayfield department store. Book 1 features Beth Forrest who works in the Bridal Registry department. Mrs. Pettett has come up with a scheme to pull people into the store during Halloween and for Beth that means she’ll be wearing a blood-spattered wedding gown. While in her ghoulish outfit and make-up, in walks in her old 10-year crush from her teen years, walks into the store and into the Bridal Registry department to purchase a wedding gift for a wedding he will attend.

Beth is flummoxed, she recognizes James Tetherton-Hart right away, but it takes James a little longer. James is a science nerd with a professorship at Cambridge. As soon as James actually recognizes Beth, he not only wants to purchase the needed wedding gift, but ask Beth to be his date for the wedding. The irony is, the wedding is to a former “rival” who was the cause of Beth leaving her job 10 years ago, giving up a scholarship, and sending her life into a negative, “I’m worthless” spiral that ends with her settling for her job at Pettett & Mayfield. We learn that James also has never felt he fit in around people, except when in the science/academic world. From this point, the story is rather predictable in its directionality and the repetitive messages of “he/she likes me, but I’m unworthy” and/or “he/she is too lofty for me, I’m an unworthy geek or too insignificant to be loved” or some incessant variation…

What I Liked:
Once again, I am in awe of Autumn Macarthur’s nimble hand at honing in on key biblical themes in her stories and fleshing them out through her characters. She shines in her ability to write the last one-four of all her books. This book was no different. She takes the characters flaws, brings them to biblical insight concerning their struggles, focuses on God’s will and way, and then creates a beautiful HEA.
I liked the idea of picking various employees from the department story and featuring them in a story. The store environment becomes a metaphor for family and how the family rallies around those “family members” in need to encourage and help them. I’ve noticed that with many of Macarthur’s fictional couples (also in The Wedding List), one person has more strength and usually is less risk-averse than the other person, which balances out the couple. Good, the Bible talks about “two being better than one” (Eccl. 4:9-12).
James was made interesting by his peculiar way of inserting his passion for science, physics, and theories into all his problem solving situation he found himself in (not just in the classroom). He was truly an integrated individual with his engagement of science and his life!

What I Found Tedious:
Macarthur’s characters always have a very human side, they have common human struggles. In this story, her character’s struggle with feelings of being insignificant, unworthy, fearful, and trapped by things they believe they cannot change. This is a struggle most people can identify with, but this positive engagement hook, when used chronically becomes maudlin, it makes the characters and the book a struggle to read.
This continues to be my struggle with almost every Macarthur book I have read. I LOVE the last quarter of her books, but I almost want to quit during the first third of her books. I am sincere in my appreciation of her ability to draw the threads and themes together to make a great HEA with a biblical punch, but IMO, the beginnings and middles of her books (including this one) need help. Plot devices that use “I love you, I love you not,” “I’m worthy, I’m not worthy,” etc., dragging out angst and delaying petty misunderstandings are tedious and not worthy of the powerful endings Macarthur brings to contemporary Christian fiction.

Have you ever felt everyone looked down on you and life was never going to give you a break?
The first line of this book shows you just how bad Beth’s life is and how it feels like there is just no end in sight:

“Most days, Beth Forrest loved her job. After wearing a scratchy polyester wedding dress splattered with fake blood for eight hours, today was most definitely not one of those days.”

From a very young age, Beth has felt lower in class than others around her. Then she falls in love with a sweet young guy who doesn’t see her like that. The only problem is she’s told by his family and others that she isn’t good enough for him, so she leaves. Then ten years later who should walk into her business, while she’s wearing this wonderful outfit, but her first and only love, James. Oh, how will she ever get through this night?

It was a joy to read this book because there were so many fun parts. I loved all the funny bumbles these two characters had. I also enjoyed all the interesting British phrases and words. This book flowed so smoothly and had many wonderful characters.
Autumn Macarthur is a gifted storyteller. She can weave a story with just the right amount of flair that I started believing these were real people. I think I’d love to go to London and take a look around. However, I might not want to go up in the Tower and do all those stairs. I’m sort of like Beth in this, stairs and heights are not my friends!
This story written by Autumn Macarthur is a sweet story of love and acceptance for who we are. It also covers issues of jealousy, and fear of rejection. She shares how through God’s love and grace we can overcome these obstacles. Autumn Macarthur does a wonderful job of weaving God’s truth in such a way it isn’t fake, it’s real.
I highly recommend getting this book for your reading pleasure!
I was given this book by the author for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

James had been the love of Beth's life until their family and friends separated them, but as bad as that was, it became worse when James didn't care enough to track her down. Ten years later and being the crazy scientist he is, James winds up in the wrong shop on the wrong day facing the only woman he's ever loved, and now confused that she didn't care enough to say goodbye, yet she still wears the necklace her gave her for her sixteenth birthday. With the help of Beth's friend, matchmaker extraordinaire, Anita, James and Beth keep running into each other. Now it's up to the, to finally listen to each other and to what God is telling them and see if they are truly meant to be together.

I think this is a great book for any single Christian, i must admit I hope my daughters will read this and get as much from it as I did too. I loved the story, it reminded me of those times in my life thinking I would forever be alone, those moments of trying to to push my opinion onto Gods timing and not trust in him fully. A great story full of hope and love.

Beth Forrest and James Tetherton-Hart meet ten years ago. She was working as maid in a grand house and had to leave her job in a hurry as someone how had eyes on James told a lie to get Beth sacked. Beth comes from a poor family and James from a privileged family but never really knew his mother and father really loved him. James’s mother told him Beth isn’t good enough for him.
Ten years later Beth is working in a nice shop that sells all sorts of top end things. James goes into this shop to buy a wedding present and notices Beth there. It seems neither of them have got over their broken hearts.
The book is mostly about these two people - can they with God’s help sort out things for them. It is great to see a man who really loves his girlfriend but is not willing to get into a compromising position. I really like seeing characters in a book showing they believe in God and that they need Him to guide their paths.

Love this book!!! James and Beth first met ten years ago, when he was nineteen and she was sixteen. They were falling for each other, but when "mean girl" Imogene lies about Beth stealing a necklace, and others telling her they were "classes" apart, Beth ran. James was used to people he loved leaving him; after all, neither parent spent time with him. Now, he finds Beth behind the counter of a bridal registry, and knows this is his second chance with her. Beth isn't so sure, though she hopes this is their time! When Beth takes something James says the wrong way, will these two ever get their wires uncrossed, and will Beth be able to see herself as God sees her? When she finally does, is it too late for her chance at happiness with James?

This is the 2nd time I've read this book, but the first time I've reviewed it. The first time I read it, I didn't realize how important reviews are!!

I found this to be a frustrating reading experience. The characters meet for the first time after 10 years, and Beth is shocked and upset after seeing James. Then an hour later she sees him again and her heart lights up and she's thanking God for one more chance to see him and talk to him about what happened back then (which does not come up in the conversation at that time). From then on (this story takes place over 4 days) these two seem to just fall exactly where they were 10 years ago, and Beth keeps thanking God for the gift of one more evening together (she thanks him for this exact phrase 6 times) and James is ready to propose without actually finding out why she left without a word back then. Eventually they get things figured out in the most excruciatingly frustrating way, and happily-ever-after. Most of the book was stuck in the characters' heads, thinking the same things over and over. I just wanted it to be over. Good thing I got this for free.

The Wedding List is an average romance, with a dusting of British flavor that seemed to blend well with current royal wedding buzz. While the protagonist isn't a royal, his upper-crust family certainly gels. In many ways, this is a story we've heard before. He's well-to-do with a family who wants him to associate only "within his set." She's a shopkeeper from the wrong side of the tracks. They had puppy love in their younger years until his parents kept them apart. Life and love intervene to give them a second chance.

The story, while sweet, is very predictable. The religious content, also feels a bit forced at times and tacked on. While I appreciated that he was a scientist who harmonized faith and his analytical mind, the story itself just didn't come together tightly enough for me.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A Christian romance book. This story is set in a London department store and Beth works as the wedding registry manager. She looks forward to buying a home of her own by herself. A wrench is thrown into her plans when an ex comes into the store, he is a believer and he is interested in having her back. How can she explain why she left all those years ago? And can she let God take control of the situation? This is my kind of book, a London department store, weddings and God I could not ask for more. Looking forward to the rest of the books in this series.

Everything I wanted

This story was sweet, romantic, sad, joyful, real, and filled with God's love. There were moments that made me tear up and moments that were so sweet that it made my teeth hurt. I love that the author didn't feel the need to drag the story out forever and while there were a couple of abrupt changes, for the most part I felt the characters were well fleshed out and it was easy to bond with them. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.

The Wedding List: Amazing writing with interesting characters and great dialog. I thought was an interesting story throughout. I liked the route that the author took for the characters. It was sad how Beth really cared about him but didn't want to sound desperate since asked at the last minute for her to go to the wedding with him. I didn't like how he treated her differently in front of his mother. Beth maybe has had a different up bring but that is not what makes a relationship and love. She felt betrayed by him. I really enjoyed the twist and turns throughout the story.

Overcoming fear and having a second chance at love

The first book in this series is a delightful clean romance about overcoming fears and not letting what others think determine what you do or how you live your life. Giving yourself a chance at love regardless of what may appear to stand in your way. Having faith in yourself and the one you love. I am so looking forward to reading more in this series as well as other books from this very talented author.

British + Christian + Romance 🥰

At first, I was angry that the biggest conflict was the conflicting thoughts of the characters. About halfway through, the story picked up. A little confusing, as everything about the book is British, and I caught some of what looked to me like typos, so it could have used another going over. But I love me a good Christian Romance, and the ending was cute.

Warm and Delightful Story

What a warm and delightful story about the “haves and have-nots”, about the upper class and lower class, and never should the twain meet. Until one day an upper class gentleman, who never felt he fit in, falls in love with a beautiful young woman from the lower class. Miscommunication, misunderstanding, and lack of belief in herself causes mayhem until God intervenes. Lessons learned, beliefs change, and a delightful ending. I adored this book!

Sweet trip to London

This hooked me and kept me reading. The plot was pretty good, the characters were well-developed, and I'm excited to read more in this series and by this author. It was fun to "visit" London, a place I've never been - and this book was a lot cheaper than a plane ticket!

A lovely novella

Even though I kept wishing that they would have their long overdue talk and get all of their misunderstandings cleared up, it was actually better that they released their fears to God than if each assured the other that every thing would be all right, that parents, friends, coworkers, etc., would accept them.

The wedding list

Great read, one for the record books on love and how Jesus let us know if. It was great to read how we could do things if only we believe in Him. He is there for us at any time day or night through laughter and throw fear, he will always be there for us. Thankyou for writing such a great book. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill

Fear Not

This is a story of a young woman who works in a department store and a man who is a brilliant scientist. They have history together and this seems insurmountable. It was a sweet story and also a reminder that God knows us completely and wants our whole heart. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
