Those who have read Ponniyin selvan all parts have to read this book. Its a untold story of aaditha karikalan's death. Though it is also one of the prediction about his death, but the author gives convincing facts and witness from the history. After reading ponniyin selvan, even i was not convinced about aadithan's death story. this gives more clear idea. Though the book includes imagination of author, it reveals the other side of a coin.

சரித்திர நாவல்கள் , அதிலும் குறிப்பாக சோழ சாம்ராஜ்யம் குறித்து வந்த நாவல்களில் அனைவரையும் ஈர்த்தது கல்கியின் பொன்னியின் செல்வன் , அதில் பெர்முடா முக்கோணம் போல் அதிக மர்மங்கள் நிறைந்த பகுதி ஆதித்ய கரிகலனின் கொலை தான் ! அதை அவர் வெறும் மேலோட்டமாக பார்த்து , ஒரு யூகமாக ராவிதசனும் பாண்டிய நாட்டு ஆபத்துதவிகள் தான் அவன் கொலைக்கு காரணம் என முடித்திருப்பார் !
சங்கதாராவில் ஒரு புதிய கோணத்தில் கொண்டுசெல்வார் இதன் ஆசிரியர் நரசிம்மா ! கதையின் துவக்கத்தில் "நான் ஆதித்ய கரிகாலன் பேசுகிறேன்" என்று ஆடிய கரிகாலன் வாயிலாக அவனின் ஏக்கததையும் , ஆதங்கத்தையும் வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார் ! வாசகர்களின் ஆர்வத்தை தூண்டுவதற்கு அந்த ஒரு காரணம் போதுமானது ! இதுவரை ஆதித்ய கரிகாலன் என்றால் , மூர்க்கண் , முன்கோபி , சபலக்காரன் என்று எண்ணம் கொண்டுஇருந்தார்வார்கள் , அவனின் மறுபக்கத்தை இப்புத்தகத்தில் படிக்கலாம் ! தொடக்கத்தில் இருந்தே விறுவிறுப்பு குறையாமல் நேர்த்தியாக கதயை எடுத்து செல்கிறார் ஆசிரியர்! ஒரு crime , thriller நாவல்களுக்குள்ள அனைத்து அத்தியாவசிய சமாசாரங்களும் இதில் உள்ளன !
வந்தியதேவன் நல்லவனா? கெட்டவனா? ராஜராஜ சோழன் உண்மாயில் யார்? குந்தவையின் அரசியல் ! ராவிதாசன் யார்? நந்தா விளக்கு தான் நந்தினியா ?? என பல கேள்விகளுக்கு விடை குடுக்கிறார் ! அதற்கான சரித்திர ஆதாரங்களையும் எடுத்து வைக்கிறார் ! சம்பாவி , நந்தாவிலக்கு , தில்லை அழகி , விஜயரேக்கா , சுகோடய்ன், தொட்டக்கனி என பல புதிய கதாபாத்திரங்களை அறிமுக படுத்துகிறார் !
கதையின் இறுதியில் கொலையாளி யார் என்று அறியும் போது ஒரு கணம் அப்டியே திகைத்து விட்டேன் ! !! பொன்னியின் செல்வன் பிரியர்கள் கண்டிப்பாக படிக்க வேண்டிய நோவல் ! இதை படித்த பிறகு பொன்னியின் செல்வன் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் மீது இருந்த அபிப்பிராயங்கள் நிச்சயமாக மாறும் என்பது உறுதி !!

I had communicated the following thoughts and observations to the author after I completed the book. While I did get a reply mostly under the impression that I believed only PS as a history (for which I replied back), there are more questions unanswered and not a robust reasoning. This is my inference!
• Kalki’s inspiration?
o Kundavai pushing her step-sister to death in the pond stemming from jealousy seems to be taken from Kalki’s picturization of Kundavai being jealous of Nandhini’s beauty?
o Parthibendran as a separate character
o A mad aunt at the Thanjavur palace
o A second Maduranthaka (Kandaradhitya’s actual son or one who was grown as a son going away on worship and the actual third child of Sundara Chola)
o The congregation of Pazhuvettarayar, Parthibendran, Vandiyathevan along with danseuse Nanda at the Kadmabur palace at the time of Aditya Karikalan’s assassination
o Kandhamaran asserts that only his sister’s husband should ascend the throne
• Defying historical analysis
o Parthibendran is the other name for Aditya Karikalan (Ref K A N Sastry)
o Thalai konda’ does not get a literal meaning as severing the head (Ref K A N Sastry); Here the trend seems to go with the literary and poetic fervor
• Looking for Evidences
o Evidence for murder of the cousin? (p414) (murukkala illai murungala)
o Kandaradhitya aka ‘Merkezhuntharuliya Devar’, if he did come back, evidences?
o “Big temple, small mind” (p408) – Is it because it is a Shiva temple? Not sure then where is the small mind? Any evidences if the Thalikulathar temple was demolished by Raja Raja? While forums on the topic
(http://ponniyinselvan.in/forum/discus... as well as http://blog.satheeshkumar.in/2009/05/... ) point an existence undisturbed either closer or farther, where is the destruction? This seems to be the lowest point in the narrative
o If Rajendra Chola finds the mother feeding an infant at Purasanga (current Malaysia) (p445) and is emotionally moved as it resembles Kundavai (grandmother as per book, aunt as per tradition), does not seem to be an evidence, but only an inference. Could it not be simply that Kundavai fondled and took care of Raja Raja and Rajendra as much as if not more than a mother (while retaining her position as a sister and aunt)?
• Defying logic
o Raja Raja’s Birth place is Thirukoviloor; If Kundavai’s chandi vow was a ploy to deliver the child, it happens in Pazhayarai? And most people never came to know of it??
o The child swap that seems to have happened in the river Cauvery, no one except Aditya ever noticed that ‘Ponnyin Selvan’ had birth marks of conch etc.?
o Not sure how Sambavi tells Nandhipura Devi that she as the daughter of Rajadithya had more claims to the throne (p152) than Kandarathitha or Arinjaya? For one, the Cholas seems to have had only patriarchal inheritance. Other being, since it was a gandharva marriage, not known to anyone how does her mother Nandhipuravalli gain the status of a queen?
o The author feels that Pazhuvettarayar would not have dared to plot against Aditya Karikala (p30) because he was his great grandson. If that be the case, Kundavai’s plot to murder Aditya Karikala also would not stand to reason?
o Kundavai aged 78 in 1018 (p412). However in Aditya Karikala’s letter to audience, he refers her age as 26 in 969 AD (p xv). So, was Kundavai born in 1940 or 1943? Also, the nadi reading predicts danger to Aditya in his twenty ninth year (irupathum navamum yandu) (p56). His assassination happens in 969 AD. So, he should have been born in 940 AD and Kundavai probably in 942 AD
o After marrying Raja Raja, Nandha vilakku commits suicide. That means Sambavi’s prediction to Nandhipura Devi that her child would ascend as a queen (p153) fell flat?
o The espionage and counter-espionage that is fascinatingly portrayed in Ponnyin Selvan brings out the political currents and postures typical of the period with a weakening kingdom and multiple claimants to the throne. On the contrary, here it is reduced to a trivial function with Anirudhar marginalized to a few passages and no intelligence inputs reaching him or other senior functionaries. Kundavai drowns a step sister, gets a child, swaps babies midway in Cauvery, sends Aditya’s corpse from Thanjavur to Kadamboor etc. and all this remains untraced by royal espionage?
o Once again considering that the Chola kingdom was not at its best and Sundara Chola was laid down by sickness, the various provincial rulers (Pazhuvettarayar, Kodumbalur, Malayaman, Sambuvarayar, Kunrathur kizhar etc.) who all had different levels of relations with the ruling family and other claimants to power, would have been trying to throw their weight behind a heir which suits them. While this has been exquisitely woven in Ponnyin Selvan, here we find a drastic simplification of the undercurrents and painting only Kundavai as an antagonistic
o Granting that Aditya’s death was accidental when Kundavai was safe guarding herself, the dead body was carried in a musical box from Thanjavur to Kadambur without anyone sensing it at any point of time?
o While granting that her aides were bumped off and it is typical of royal functioning, but still If Kundavai was involved in various murders – step sister (forgiven because of the age??), Aditya Karikala (self-defense???), Pazhuvettarayar does not want her to be prosecuted??
o The conclusion focuses on the virus of sin (brahma hathya) that spread and finally ruined the Cholas. Granting that Raja Raja was indeed Kundavai’s son, since his ascent in 985 AD did the dynasty not reach greater heights only from this point onwards such that there were six direct kings till 1070 AD followed by Telugu Cholas (again a maternal descent from Raja Raja) which had another 8 kings till 1279 AD, a total period of 300 years?
o While Kunthi’s non-disclosure did a irrecoverable damage to Karna, implying the same on Kundavai and Raja Raja (p445) (for a moment granting the theory) seems to be far-fetched, for the simple reason that the author himself proclaims their rule as that of a moolavar and utsavar (p408)
• Other observations
o Mythological invocation of Surya mantra to beget a child in Mahabharatha, (as well as other such mantras for the other Pandavas), is being questioned in various texts of Mahabharatha (Bhima – a lone warrior by M T Vasudevan Nair, Jaya by Devdutt Patnaik to name a few). Now, imposing this on a historical novel that too one with a claim that it is based on investigation and evidences, seems to be out of place
o The character of Aditya Karikala is built in Ponnyin Selvan gradually culminating in a rage filled young prince. Here he seems to be depicted tempestuous (episodes of horse-riding and subsequent revealing of Nadi, the battle at Chevvor and the way he treats Pandya’s head etc.) and magnanimous (locating and shielding the various off-shoots of the Cholas)
o The character of Kandaraditya seems to get dual projection. On one hand, he was oblivious to the burdens of ruling a kingdom and was immersed in devotion, yet he complies to a plan and plot by Pazhuvettarayar to grow some child from his clan as his own (p423)
o If indeed, the younger brother of Kundavai ascended the throne as Uttama Chola, what happens to him in 985 AD? Being the same age as Arulmozhi, does he die of natural reasons? Illness? Gets killed?
o Kundavai’s address to the citizens seems to be an embrace of Shakespearean Augustus (p382 – p383)
o If the coronation symbols thalaichanga and leaf of the flame of the forest forever remained in the distant lands of Sri Vijaya and what Kundavai gained was only a duplicate, it does not seem to have affected the ascent of the Cholas. In fact the peaks have been scaled only after this and Sri Vijaya was repeatedly conquered by Raja Raja and Rajendra?
o Also, the lands were such precious symbols remained have completely given way to other religions and forms of worship, the land where it originated reverberates with Shaivism and Vaishnavism?
o If we let the fertile imagination run amok father, deeper and wider, we can even conclude that it was the ailing Sundara Chola, troubled by Aditya’s tantrums, asked Kundavai to ‘fix him’! That can also conveniently explain why there was no serious investigation later on, is it not?
• Conclusion
o But for the claim, that it is not a novel but an investigative report on the assassination of Aditya Karikala, it might have been possible to accommodate one more theory or speculation about the Aditya Karikala’s assassination, but the author has self-denied such a possibility
o While we could join the wishes and prayers towards the eternal peace of Aditya’s soul, it does remain as unresolved political assassination.

In fact the peaks have been scaled only after this and Sri Vijaya was repeatedly conquered by Raja Raja and Rajendra?
o Also, the lands were such precious symbols remained have completely given way to other religions and forms of worship, the land where it originated reverberates with Shaivism and Vaishnavism?
o If we let the fertile imagination run amok father, deeper and wider, we can even conclude that it was the ailing Sundara Chola, troubled by Aditya’s tantrums, asked Kundavai to ‘fix him’! That can also conveniently explain why there was no serious investigation later on, is it not?

o But for the claim, that it is not a novel but an investigative report on the assassination of Aditya Karikala, it might have been possible to accommodate one more theory or speculation about the Aditya Karikala’s assassination, but the author has self-denied such a possibility
o While we could join the wishes and prayers towards the eternal peace of Aditya’s soul, it does remain as unresolved political assassination.

இந்நூலுக்கு நான் 3 | 5 தருவது ஆசிரியரின் உழைப்புக்கும் முயற்சிக்காகவும் மட்டுமே.பொன்னியின் செல்வன், உடையார் நூல்களை படித்து சோழர்களின் வரலாற்றை நம்பியிருந்த என் மனதிற்குள் பெரிய சஞ்சலத்தை உண்டாக்கி விட்டது. குந்தவையின் மேல் ஆசிரியருக்கு என்ன கோபம் என்று தெரியவில்லை. அவளின் மதிப்பை மிகவும் குறைத்து விட்டார். ஒரு வேளை எதிர்மறை விமர்சனங்களால் பிரபலமடையலாம் என நினைத்தாரோ என்னவோ?.... சோழர்கள் புதிர்தான்.... இது என் சொந்த கருத்து ..மிகவும் பாதிப்படைய வைத்து விட்டது இறுதியில் வரும் திருப்பங்கள் ....

. Satya's reviews (Aug 09 2015) on this are outstanding. I normally do not like to comment negatively on literary efforts. But this one set itself up!
First of all I would like to congratulate Satya for boldly calling the author out on this. I write little more in support of the review by Satya.
Firstly,
If the author did not claim it is an investigative report it would have made a better read.
To malign a historical character that actually lived without supporting evidence is inappropriate- people who do not know better would infer that is is fact that Raja raja killed Aditya to ascend the throne! Or that his sister was his mother actually and so on.

Whereas that is just an opinion of the author or his predilection or he wishes fondly to be so! We too wish Aditya did not die. But then to cast aspersions without basis on other historical characters often going against available inscriptions is not acceptable and becomes unpardonable when clothed under phrases that the book is investigative in nature.
Opinions cost nothing to hold and has no accountability. One must not indulge in that especially where it concerns history of a magnificent two century period in India , especially southern India which has largely been ignored in the general annals of Indian history so far.
It is sad to see several reviews stating this is a CB CID report!
Writer Kalki of PS did not gloss over Aditya Karikalan's death, as the author seemed to suggest- Merely he spun the story with the historical facts he could get at that time. Kalki's style was non offensive but grand in terms of humor, plot, fiction plus faithfulness to historical facts. He never once portrayed his own theories as facts. He always ended his theories as questions to be unraveled. Including Aditya's death circumstances.
The novel has a brooding quality throughout. One can palpably feel the sinister plotting so aptly called as spider web by the author. On that one count one must congratulate the author for having created that feeling of sin and doom.
Title sangathara holds shades of buddhism- Why?
The plot is psychological- only a mentally sick person can kill at such a young age (early teens at best) - attempt drowning own half sister and brother. But this person was the able administrator of chola empire for many decades? Unbelievable?
Also in the early teens, it is a miracle to beget a son unknown to anyone except the person herself and one or two friends.
The age factor hits pazhuvettrayar too. His daughter is the great grand mother of raja raja (Whoa! So what is his age? 90 plus? According to the author himself, Arinjaya was his grandson ; parantaka-II his great grand son!- When did Pazhuvettrayar beget his daughter? A stretch of imagination given life expectancies in those days.
I agree with Satya, if you can rule out pazhuvettrayar plotting against Aditya, one can also conclude that a girl in early teens would not kill siblings unless she is mentally not sound. If she were mentally unsound she could not have ruled chola empire with through proxy so ably as the author suggests. Or the fact that she was an advisor to Raja Raja (as is borne out by later history. The mental fabric would fall through very naturally.
I feel the author relies on the fact that she spent her last days with Rajendra -1 to state that she is his grandmother and not aunt. This is surmise and his opinion only. It cannot be taken as a fact given those days people lived in extended families.
Further, the contributions of karuvur devar as guru to raja raja has been conveniently overlooked. This does not fit well with the model of kundavai ruling chola empire through raja raja chola.
And same can be said to countless others who contributed to later years during raja raja reign and early periods of Rajendra's reign.

The intense battles that took place in time earlier days of Raja raja -
if kundavai was the sole puppeteer and Raja Raja the sole puppet, how could those have been successful? One needs many attributes to succeed in wars. Being an astute and able administrator is not enough.
Even the author fails to mention that Kundavai was trained in martial arts . She was also not present in the war scenarios. So how does his theory now stack up?

I felt the author flipped the case of stolen Pandya crown (in Ponniyin Selvan and other sequels such as Kaveriyin Maintahn and Nandipura nayaki) as hidden chola symbols of monarchy. So these usurpers finally were the ones who gave India a chola era!

The rich tapestry of life and social events of the era remain untouched.
One is constantly aware of brooding but psychologically disturbed nature of thoughts of characters in the book. One is truly shaken by that feeling. One is shaken by the hidden but subtle malevolence of Kundavai and Vandiya Devan

I do not know how to start and how to finish!
First of all...hats off to the writer who has always stuck to the point instead of talking about nature and women!
Being an ardent lover of Aadhitha Karikalar, this book drives me to a lunatic state.
His bravery and his good nature is very well explained in this book which will make anyone fall in love with him.
There are so many plots on his death mentioned in every book. But each and every story raises many questions and has many loop holes making it incomplete.
But the story in this book is very convincing yet unbelievable.
Was it real? Was he murdered like that? Oh my God!
After reading this book, one question keeps pestering my inner peace!
How did this man undergo all such difficulties all alone?
After being so good at heart, why did this injustice happen to him?
Right from the time of Mahabharata, there is no such thing as good or bad!
It is always the 'Survival of the fittest'!
There is no value for virtue and justice...The one who wins has pulled down the legs of the other to achieve his glory!
To this world I would like to say! I'm not gonna stand with you and admire the survivours!
I will stand by the side of my love and keep praising the unsung glory of my hero - Aaditha Karikalan! :)

ஆதித்ய கரிகாலன் கொலைப் பற்றிய விறுவிறுப்பான நாவல் இது . ஆரம்பம் முதல் இறுதிவரை வேகம் குறையாமல் போகும் நாவலின் தாக்கத்தை குறைப்பது சரியான சானிறல்லாத வரலாற்று குறிப்புகளே. சரித்திரத்தை புரட்டிப் போடும் முடிவை நாவலுக்கு வைத்திருக்கும் ஆசிரியர் அதற்கு சரியான வரலாற்று சான்றோ , விளக்கமோ அளிக்காதது ஏன் என்று தெரியவில்லை. போகும் போக்கில் சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போகலாம் அல்லது ஏதாவது சர்ச்சையை உருவாக்கலாம் என்பதற்காகவே உருவாக்கப்பட்ட முடிவுப் போலவு அமைந்திருக்கிருது இந்த நாவலின் முடிவு .தஞ்சை நகரை சார்ந்தவர்களும் பெருவுடையார் கோயிலின் வரலாறு மேல் சிறுது ஆர்வுமுள்ளவர்களைக் கூட இந்த நாவல் convince செய்யவில்வை என்பதை உண்மை.

Mind-blowing & mysterious narrative that takes an antithesis aspect of Ponniyin Selvan. Author has put a tremendous effort to backup everything with evidence - however it gives a great awe to be considered a reality.
Characters like Sambavi, Deviammanar, Sugothayan, Nandipura devi, Thavamani adigal bring chills when thought about their backstory.
Definitely a commendable work by Author in fantasizing most of the historical facts in these super racy 50+ chapters.
Note: Not comparing Sangathara with PS. Avoid fact-checks. Just go with the flow and enjoy this counterclockwise experience with hysterical twists n turns.

Definitely a commendable work by Author in fantasizing most of the historical facts in these super racy 50+ chapters.
Note: Not comparing Sangathara with PS. Avoid fact-checks. Just go with the flow and enjoy this counterclockwise experience with hysterical twists n turns.

Must read book after reading Ponniyin selvan (5 parts). As well said by author, History was always been partial. It can take some people to sky level or it can crush you down. Here, history has shown kindness to kundhavai and raja raja cholan. Lets see the other side of the coin and judge the possibility of Aadhitha karikalan's death with facts and evidences.

உலகப்புகழ் பெற்ற அமரர் கல்கியின் பொன்னியின் செல்வன் நாவலுக்குப் பின், அதன் மாயமும் மெருகும் தாண்டி வேறு யாரும் அந்தக் காலத்தை அப்படியே மீண்டும் உருவாக்க முடியாது என்பதே பலரின் நம்பிக்கை. எனினும், இந்நூலாசிரியர் அந்த முயற்சியில் தன்னை ஈடுபடுத்தி, மூலக்கதையின் கருவையும் கதாபாத்திரங்களையும் தழுவி, வரலாற்று ஆதாரங்களையும் தன் ஆன்மீக–புராண அறிவையும் பின்னி ஒரு புதிய கோணத்தில் கதை சொல்ல முயன்றுள்ளார்.
கதை தொடங்குவது ராஜேந்திர சோழனின் மகள் அருண்மொழி நங்கை தன் அத்தைப்பாட்டி பௌத்தத் துறவியான தவமணி அடிகள் (எ) பங்கயதேவி(குந்தவை, ராஜராஜ சோழனின் மாற்றாந்தாயின் மகள்), எழுதிய ஓலைச்சுவடிகளை வாசித்தபடி தன் வம்சத்தின் மறைந்த வரலாற்றைத் தேடும் ஒரு பயணத்தில் ஈடுபடுகிறாள்.
ஆனால், இங்குதான் ஆசிரியர் கற்பனைக்குதிரையை கட்டுப்படுத்தாமல் ஓடவிட்டுவிட்டார். பொன்னியின் செல்வனில் அறிவும் அரசதந்திரமும் நிறைந்த குந்தவை, இங்கே சூழ்ச்சியிலும் கொலைகளிலும் திளைக்கும் அரசியல் சூதாட்டம் செய்யும் குறுமதி படைத்த ஆசாமியாக சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது வாசகரான எனக்கு மிகுந்த ஏமாற்றத்தை உண்டாக்கியது. ஆதித்த கரிகாலன் எப்படி இறந்தான் என்பது இன்று வரை விளக்கப்படாத ஒரு மர்ம முடிச்சு. அதை தன்னுடைய கோணத்தில் சொல்லமுயன்ற ஆசிரியர் முற்றிலும் தோற்று விடுகிறார். அவனைக்கொன்று தன்னுடைய மகனை பட்டத்தில் ஏற்ற பாடுபட்டிருப்பதாக குந்தவையை கூறியிருப்பது நகைப்புக்குறியது.

ஆதித்ய கரிகாலனை கொன்றது யார்?
இந்த கேள்வி பொன்னியின் செல்வன் படித்ததிலிருந்து என் மனதில் அவ்வப்போது தோன்றக் கூடிய ஒன்று. பாண்டிய நாட்டு ஆபத்துதவியான ரவிதாசன் தான் அதற்கு காரணம் என்று பலரும் கூறுகின்றனர். இன்னும் பலர், வரலாற்று புதினங்களை படிக்கும் போது அவர்களை அறியாமல் கதையில் அவர்கள் மூழ்குவதனால் சில கற்பனை கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு உயிர் கொடுத்து உலாவவிடுகின்றனர். அப்படி, கற்பனை கதாபாத்திரமான நந்தினியே கரிகாலரை கொன்றது என்றும் சிலர் கூறுகின்றனர். சிலர், மதுராந்தகன் என்றும், சிலர் பழுவேட்டரையர்கள் என்றும் கூறுகின்றனர்.
இந்த தெரிந்த கேள்விக்கு தெரியாத பதில் ஏராளம். பாண்டிய நாட்டு ஆபத்துதவியான ரவிதாசனும் அவன் கூட்டாளிகளும் தான் கரிகாலரை கொன்றார்கள் என்றால் அவர்களுக்கு ஏன் கொலை தண்டனை விதிக்க படவில்லை ?

பாண்டிய நாட்டு ஆபத்துகள் சோழர் குலத்தில் பழி தீர்க்க காத்திருக்கிறது என்றால், பட்டத்து இளவரசரான ஆதித்தற்கு எதற்கு அரச பாதுகாப்பு அளிக்கப்படவில்லை ?
போரில், மத யானைகளுக்கு சமமானவர் ஆதித்தர். அவரை நேருக்கு நேர் போரிட்டு வெல்வதென்பது இயலாத ஒன்று. நிச்சயம் யாரோ புறமுதுகில் தான் குத்தியிருப்பர். அப்படியென்றால், குத்திய அந்த துரோகி யார்?
வந்தியத்தேவனுக்கும் குந்தவைக்கும் இருந்த காதல் பலரும் அறிந்த ஒன்று. அப்படி காதலில் திளைத்தவர்களின் வாரிசுகளை வரலாறு எங்கே காண்பிக்கிறது ?
இன்னும் பல முடிச்சுகள் சோழர் குலத்தில் அவிழ்க்கப்படாமல் இருக்கின்றன. அவிழ்க்க நினைத்தால் மேலும் பல முடிச்சுகள் விழும் என்பது திண்ணம். இதை நாவலாசிரியர் எடுத்துரைத்த விதம், பிரமாண்டம். பல சான்றுகளையும் ஆதாரங்களையும் கதையின் போக்கில் அவையின் முன் வைக்கிறார். இருந்தாலும், பலவற்றை இதயம் ஏற்க மறுக்கிறது. சிலவற்றிக்கு இதயம் வலிக்கிறது.
மேலும், நாவலின் முகவுரை, ஆதித்ய கரிகாலரே சொல்வது போல உள்ளதும், அதை படித்ததும் மனதி��் ஏதோ ஓர் பாரம் ஏறுவதும், ஆசிரியரின் எழுத்தின் வலிமை. சோழ வாளின் கூர்மையை விட ஆசிரியரின் எழுத்தின் கூர்மை, கண்டிப்பாக சில இடங்களில் உங்களை கொன்றுவிடும்.
ஆசிரியர் கூறுவது போல அத்தனையும் உண்மையாக இருப்பின்,
கண்ணில் தென்படும் அத்தனை நபர்களிடமும் இந்த இரகசியத்தை உரக்க கூறவேண்டும் என்கிறது மனம்.
ஆதலால் கூறுகிறேன் :
நிச்சயம் இந்த புத்தகத்தை படியுங்கள்
சோழர் காலத்���ில்,
இன்னும் கொஞ்ச நாள் வாழ்ந்துவிட்டு வாருங்கள்.

A controversial read indeed!
பொன்னியின் செல்வன், உடையார் (நந்திபுரத்து நாயகி, காவிரி மைந்தன் and more) போன்ற சரித்திர நாவல்கள் படிச்சிட்டு, சங்கதாரா படிக்கும் போது ஆசிரியருக்கு சோழர்கள் மேல குறிப்பா குந்தவை, ராஜா ராஜா சோழன் மேல அப்படி என்ன கோவம்னு நினைக்கிற அளவுக்கு இருக்கு!
To start with, the novel's name is 'Sangathara'. But the whole explanation about it comes in just one chapter, just a few pages! What happens to Sangathara, nobody knows?! It sounds more like a Buddhist name.
Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar's age doesn't fit the timeline at all. How long can a person live?
Kundavai's friend knows deep dive swimming, acceptable. How come the baby also knows, like nobody saw the swapping of babies and the friend returning with another baby?!
The story was indeed gripping with plot twists at consistent levels. The author's narration style - like how he handles and pauses twist, i personally liked it. But the revelation part was not satisfactory. Especially the last three pages, it was an attack on Kundhavai and Raja Rajan's bond.
The Chola Empire - their espionage system, diplomacy, political tensions, warfare and many other factors have been brilliantly handled in other books, especially in Udaiyar and PS (Vengaiyin Mainthan which is about Rajendra Cholan, which was also brilliant) that was missing here!
Many other mismatches have been already mentioned in other comments!
I can see the author wants to answer and present a theory/point for Aditya Karikalan's death, but at what cost? One cannot just twist historical figures in an immoral way!

I do not know how to start and how to finish!
First of all...hats off to the writer who has always stuck to the point instead of talking about nature and women!
Being an ardent lover of Aadhitha Karikalar, this book drives me to a lunatic state.
His bravery and his good nature is very well explained in this book which will make anyone fall in love with him.
There are so many plots on his death mentioned in every book. But each and every story raises many questions and has many loop holes making it incomplete.
But the story in this book is very convincing yet unbelievable.
Was it real? Was he murdered like that? Oh my God!
After reading this book, one question keeps pestering my inner peace!
How did this man undergo all such difficulties all alone?
After being so good at heart, why did this injustice happen to him?
Right from the time of Mahabharata, there is no such thing as good or bad!
It is always the 'Survival of the fittest'!
There is no value for virtue and justice...The one who wins has pulled down the legs of the other to achieve his glory!
To this world I would like to say! I'm not gonna stand with you and admire the survivours!
I will stand by the side of my love and keep praising the unsung glory of my hero - Aaditha Karikalan! :)

If we remove the chola background, this book would be the best murder mistery book without a doubt.
Once you start won't keep this book without finishing it.
Giving 3 stars for the historical inaccuracies mentioned in other comments.
Though a compelling case on the murder of Aditha karikalan, not a convincing one.
Additional thought I had was that
1. how come all the elders allowed kundavai to do whatever she wanted in that such young age whereas I did not even had the right to change channel at the same age.
2. Though kundhavai exactly knew what pannaga nathar suvadi said on who is going to murder Aditha karikalan, why she convinced Aditha karikalan that gandaradhitya is the one. Which means she had the motive all along which contradicts the affection shown earlier. No 10 year old could be that psychotic.
3. Not sure why the Author was hell bent on cleaning Ravidasan's image. Author says Ravidasan is a Brahmin in the Aditha karikalan's monologue, but when he introduces him, Author says he belongs to one of the branches of the cholas.
And many more. Otherwise a fast paced read. Enjoyed all along.

April 29, 2023The ponniyin selvan novel by Kalki does not give any indication Of who killed Aditya Karikala. It leaves the readers to speculate. The book Sarangadhra gives a firm indication. But I am not convinced. The conclusion is very far fetched. In the absence of any clear evidence, speculations rule. But somehow, The author seems to be terribly biased against Cholas, maybe because of the cruelty meted out to His holiness Ramanuja. He has introduced the term “Krimi” Which word was used to describe the chola who exiled The pontiff.

"துரோகிகளான இரவிதாசனாகிய..." கல்வெட்டிலிருந்தால் இந்தக் கதையில் அப்படிப்பட்ட துரோகம் எதுவும் இல்லை என்றால் கல்வெட்டு தவறா? இம்சை அரசன் 23ம் புலிகேசியில் ஒரு வசனம் தான் ஞாபகம் வருகிறது. அதிகாரம், பதவிக்காக எதையும் செய்யக் கூடியவர்கள் பலர். சோழ வரலாற்றில் இப்படியும் நடந்திருக்கலாம். இது வரை நல்லவர்களாக நினைத்த கதாபாத்திரங்கள் இதில் கெட்டவர்களாக உருவாகப்படுத்தபட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

I had a curiosity to read this novel because I heard author written story from neutral side what the others didn't write (kalki,chandilyen,etc) but I read o felt it was like a fiction. But some points are acceptable. My opinion regarding this book is it readable one time. And we will know some deep blood relationship in chola dynasty what we didn't know after complete ponniyin selvan.

One gripping excellent read ...!!! It gave a different perspective of all the positive characters of Ponniyin selvan and other novels... Donno whether to believe it... But still none can predict wat happened before 1100 yrs ... Shows the result of Aditya Karikalan's murder mystery !!!

The first word that came in my mind after I was done with the book was "WOW!!!"🌷
Could the History be really with so many twists and turns?? And some one has well said---- " History is what someone writes in their perception.... & my dear friend told always HISTORY IS A MYSTERY!!" 📖
So I don wanna get in to the truth...!!
But all I would say is the book has 56 chapters... & if you wanna experience a spine-chilling feel in every chapter 'DO' have this book in your bucket list.....
💐Every Chapter reveals a mystery....
💐All the lose ends are covered....
💐Loaded with facts & proofs.... ( which are really arduous to digest!!!! )

The book caught hold of me from the first page...... The introduction about Aditya Karikalan (Munnurai) was the best of all... The entire perception about the various characters I experienced in the journey with Ponniyin Selvan changed after reading this book....which was really unexpected...

நமக்கு பல திரைப்படங்களை பிடிக்கும். ஆனா ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட திரைப்படம் ரொம்பவும் பிடிக்கும். வசனம் பாடல்கள்ன்னு எல்லாமே ரொம்ப பிடிச்சுருக்கும். அப்படி பட்ட படத்தோட ஹீரோ & ஹீரோயின்னை அதே கதை களத்துல வில்லன் & வில்லியா காட்டின ஏத்துக்க முடியுமா?
நான் பொன்னியின் செல்வன் fan, லைட்டா வெறியன்ன்னு கூட சொல்லலாம். வருஷா வருஷம் பொன்னியின் செல்லவன் படிப்பேன். எனக்கு வந்தியத்தேவன் தான் ஹீரோ, குந்தவை தான் ஹீரோயின்.

This book is not as catchy and narrative as PS. The author is no match to kalki, in describing people, things n situations. Also, he is not good in breaking surprises and fetching the plot after that point.
But all he has good, is, data points. He really worked hard and collected some rare quotes and historical data. He has so much of data that, he just added a slight imagination over them, and then boom... this book is so damn interesting... :)
Am slightly worried, this book showed the greatest political mind of Chola history as a cunning and selfish profile here. Nevertheless how fraudulent the person was, tat soul will be best the political gimmick of Tamil history.

'Ponniyin Selvan' by Kalki continues to hold its place as one of most popular Tamil period novels even after 70 years of its serialization. Kalachakram Narasimhan has taken almost the same hisorical persons of this novel as characters in his novel but with a different version of events with many twists in his narration. He has quoted many sources to buttress his historic version of the events. He has successfully fitted himself against the popularity of Kalki and dared to demolish the pedastel of one of the main historic characters of 'Ponniyin Selvan'. The novel is fast paced but his style of writing could have been better.
