All Mr. Brown wants is a nice cup of tea and a peaceful evening with his cat on his knee. He’s too old for love and adventure. Or so he thinks.
This morning when Harold Brown woke up, it seemed like a normal day. Why would a 50-year old man feel anything about a circus coming to the quiet town of Limberlost? But BonBon Circus has brought a Bengal tiger, and Harold’s never seen a tiger before. When he decides to disrupt his routine to visit the circus, it sets in motion a few other changes, all leading up to one thrilling day. Will Mr. Brown’s life ever be the same again?
Mishana Khot was raised on a steady diet of Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton, first in England and then in India. She grew up with her siblings and family amidst a menagerie of cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, turtles, guinea pigs, and the occasional peacock.
Mishana often feels guilty because she should be writing, but is spending time on new baking experiments, planning her next world trip, or reading Brit Lit in a corner instead, but she's working on her issues. You can expect to see a lot more of her around here in the coming months.
A brave day for Harold Brown is a charming story of an eccentric 50 year old man and his fascination for one particular Bengal tiger. This book can be read by children and adults. It is a short quick read. It would take hardly an hour's time. You can also read it out loud to your kids, I'm sure they will love it. It imparts good values and makes the readers think.
The writing style was elegant. The tone of the book reminded me of "A man calle Ove" without the sarcasm. It's a novella, so the story is quite simple yet it pulls on the heratstrings. Who doesn't like to read about a sweet old man who keeps to himself and loves cats?
The story is able Harold Brown. He works as an editor. He has an assistant, Mrs.Springer. the only part of the book that didn't work for me was their subtle romance, it felt a bit forced. One fine day, Mr. Brown hears about a circus with a real tiger. He is immediately intrigued by it. He decides to visit it and builds an affinity to it. What happens when the tiger breaks free? Read to find out!
I'll recommend this book to both children and adults for a light, feel good read.
This is a charming novella that hints at so much more. A little like the Old Man and The Sea, there is much more going on here than first appears and it takes a little while to get it. I read this a few times, each time getting more and more - and as it is so short, this is easy to do.
This reminds of Hemmingway more than anything else, so anyone looking for a short read, look no further
This charming little novella pleasantly surprised me, by turning out to be the kind of old-fashioned story-telling that drew me to books in the first place. The book has you rooting for Mr. Brown, while sharing a walk with him, in no time. Here's hoping that the author will be serving out a lot more of these delicious story crumpets.
Such a cute story and a quick read! The author did such a good job of describing everything in the story and I felt that I was right there along with Harold! I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen and was left wanting more when the book ended. I am hoping for a sequel!!
what a nice little story, even more so if read aloud. i so enjoyed reading something short that didn't feel forced, or cut off, or just the beginning to sequels 1, 2, 3, etc. somehow, my mind made connections to the shape of water and julius corentin acquefacques from m-a mathieu, sharing this old-fashioned, yet weird kind of mood.
So well written. A story that reminds us how much there is in the simplicity of routine. Harold is a character you are happy to meet and root for from the beginning. The unique situation he finds himself in highlights the fact that there is so much inside everyone, and its amazing what one can accomplish when they find a connection.
This was a great little book. Loved every minute of it! It had me hooked from the very beginning. This takes you into the mind of OCD and social anxiety very well for such a short book. A great read. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Oh what a perfect short story. I needed a book to soothe my soul at that moment. Started 2 other books and put them aside; not what I needed. I've had this book in my Kindle for awhile, opened in and was immediately captured. Wonderful story, wonderful writer.
I enjoyed reading A Brave Day for Harold Brown. The story was perfect in that the characters were well developed as they could be considering the story line. It was a refreshing read.
Mishana was promoting this book and I read the first few paragraphs online... when I got to this: “Little did Harold know, a strange new wind was blowing that morning.” - I knew there was something really enjoyable to follow. Mishana kindly sent me a copy to review, but be assured my review is completely unbiased.
I really enjoyed “Harold Brown” – I like the way the author described his very neat and ordered life, one he seemed quite satisfied with, and yet when I read the part about his childhood I could immediately get a sense of the stifled boy inside. A great description of how an event in your childhood can be shut away, but never really leaves you. Each character is beautifully described, and although there is little description about the gypsy fortune teller, the way her voice is written, gives a clear understanding of how very different she is to Harold. The Tiger himself is beautifully described and matching Harold’s new knowledge from his books, offers the reader (or listener) a vivid picture of this majestic creature. The interactions at the circus are well described, and Harold’s inner turmoil is adorable! And by the way, a good book cover will often give you a sense of whether you'll like the story inside - this is no exception - Bravo the artist of the wonderful cover design.
I think this story would be lovely for a younger (primary school age) if read by their parents, or older youth to YA reading themselves. It is a simple story but told in a clean simple way that leads the reader’s imagination. It’s a very enjoyable story, I am more than happy to recommend Harry Brown to other readers.
The author was kind enough to send me her book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this short story or novella, I found myself wanting more when I reached the end.
This is a 42 page short novella about Harold a 50 year old man that has lived his entire life stuck in routine wake up, eat breakfast, go to work, leave work, eat dinner, and sleep, it has been like this for years. Harold is a man that keeps to himself he has no friends besides his cat and has no desire to make friends or break away from his routine; until the day the circus comes to his hometown. The circus has brought a tiger and Harold has never seen a tiger and is really intrigued by it, so he decided to break his routine and go to the circus to see the tiger after work.
I really love this story it was a quick read and the author's writing was superb, I love the way she described scenes she made me feel like I was right there next to Harold. I also loved the message the story is trying to send, that no matter your age it's never too late to break out of routine and do as your heart desires. I really do hope the author writes more about Harold and his life. If you're looking for a heartwarming story with a beautiful message look no further, also is super short so you have no excuse to not read it lol. -SandraTheBookWorm
This was a very cute story about an old man who never takes chances, has the same routine every day without fail and suddenly is taken aback by the urge to go out and do something. In this tale Harold Brown notices a circus in town and wants to visit to see the tiger this and all the strange turns of events lead him to an amazing adventure.
I really enjoyed the novella and honestly I wanted more when I got the the end. It felt a little incomplete to me, but that is often how novellas are. Harold was a very myterious main character, I wanted to know more about him and his life but couldn't in the context of this story. I also wanted to know more about the circus - seems so interesting.
Overall the adventure was a wonderful one about taking risks and just going for it and not being afraid to get outside your comfort zone. Very fun, quick read.
Very (VERY) uncharacteristically of me, I actually looked at one of the books advertised on my kindle. It looked cute and I could borrow it as an Amazon Prime member for free. That's a gamble. I gambled once before and was burned, but tried this anyway. Glad I did!
Pleasantly surprised and charmed. Lovely little story. Fresh and very clean. Decent writing, actually, and some nice little turns of phrase.
Really, really appreciate that there are authors who can write something interesting without trash in it. The ending (not really the ending ending, but really just the very last line, was sort of silly, but it fit so I didn't mind. It felt old-fashioned and cute.
The reviews made me expect so much more. It's short and in it's few pages it packed a lot of punch. Jarod was an extremely ordinary man. What he did I wouldn't have found so extraordinary were he anything else. Fun little read.
Mishana Khot has become one of my favorite authors. Her characters are decent, kind, and quietly heroic. Her pacing is perfect. The humor is gentle, and genuine.
I've read both Khot's books now. I eagerly await her next one.
