Grace from Outer Space’ is a fictional, but scientifically factual, picture book story about a young girl who lives in the distant future on an interstellar space ship with her family.
There are few books aimed at preschoolers or kindergarteners that feature girls in space. The illustrations are engaging and capture a child's attention.
Books that both entertain and educate are a tall order. When I participated in the Kickstarter campaign, I'd gotten the idea that this was going to be the first in a series of books. With that context in mind, this book introduces Grace and is primarily about character development and how she discovers Earth. There's not much story yet. And the rhyming structure felt a little forced at times--the factually correct phrases don't always roll off the tongue.
We're looking forward to where this character goes and future books in the series.
Out of this World! What a great way to help kids learn about science! Audiences travel alongside Grace as she travels through the universe, learning all about it every step of the way. The beautiful illustrations make the story pop off the page while the science terms and their explanations at the end create an exciting experience where audiences are learning without realizing their learning. Jenna Bryson did an amazing job of creating a feel good story that is the epitome of making learning fun.
I love the idea for this book - a scientific space girl! - and the illustrations are fun and cute. But this book feels like the opening credits for a TV show, simply introducing characters and what the book is about. There's not enough plot to be a story book, or enough meaty facts to be a non-fiction book. The rhymes aren't good enough for it to be a really fun read-aloud book (ala Dr. Seuss). My daughter likes the pictures, anyway, but we were both hoping for something a little more.
