Was he a hero, a warrior, a savior, a defender of the helpless? A knight without fear or reproach? No, nothing like that. Even among the gifted, he was known as a sorcerer, a warlock, a shapeshifter — one with a reputation firmly rooted in the darker side. But even such a man wouldn’t turn his back on an old friend in need, especially not when the world seemed on the brink of collapse.
If only he had known the consequences his meddling would bring!
His genius didn’t help him, and his unique ritual sent him farther into the past than intended. Worse still, it cast him into an alternate history — the year 1909 in the Russian Empire. This strange new world is ruled by aristocrats with powerful magical talents, and all manner of evil spirits, ghouls, and monsters crawl out of Breaches in reality, spilling into the streets of St. Petersburg. Now, with no friends, no allies, no money, and no title, he’s stuck in the body of a skinny teenage boy. To survive, he must regain his former abilities, learn new ones, and find a way back home. But for him, this is just a minor setback.
His mission is far from over. He still has a job to save his world.
The overall story is fine, the hero doesn’t have all the power at the beginning so there is development. In general, the editing and word choices are good , however, the author clearly doesn’t know much about firearms. He makes a point about one of the characters having a “browning” they hold seven shots. This is a fairly famous “pistol”, as in semi automatic firearm, not a revolver. Yet the author has this character shoot all seven shots in the cylinder. Generally revolver cylinders have six shots, especially with larger rounds, where they may only have five. In case you’re wondering they’re called revolvers , because the cylinder goes round and round. Pistols have generally magazines where the ammunition is stacked vertically. Generally, I let small goods with firearms go, but this happened right after the character was setting himself up to be a firearms connoisseur, making notes about which ones were better and how they were used. This is the kind of thing where the author only has to find the right bulletin board and post a question to the his historical channel and he will get lots of people giving him feedback, so my real gripe is like a research.
Other than that, it’s a decent story , if you like stories centered around Russian culture. Which presumably you would if you’re reading this. I plan on reading the next one in the series .
The premise and story have the potential to be great but the author just rambles on and on, dropping words that provide zero substance to the actual plot.
A a regression book, this is boring. You never learn anything about the main character, so his actions have no impact. This is mostly just school bullying. The setup is lacking, the action is sporadic, and the overall storyline is nonexistent.
Not really progession lit but it's not bad. There's no scaling power as of yet and the writing is pretty poor but the story is enough that I made it to the end .
I like this genre, I like the setup of this book. I kept reading expecting it to capture my attention and be a page turner.... I never got there. It's overexplained with the exposition at the worst times which kills the pacing. He's called a sorcerer, but it wasn't clearly defined the magic in this world he's in, it's confusing powers he has, is he a werewolf hybrid or a ruinic master?? Books just never defines it. It touches on several plot points you think would go somewhere and they don't. The main character puts himself into situations that really don't feel dangerous but they should be. The end of the story he's a high schooler running a cabal of fellow high schoolers in a gang war.... And that happened in one chapter of setup. I wanted to like this but I find myself thinking what the hell did I just read. It's a bit convoluted, that can't seem to find it's pacing. Feels like it was written by language / history the student... The best I can say is it's a weak attempt for a first book in a series. Unfortunately it's a bit forgettable.
I enjoyed this time-travelling, alternate world book. Though they were just a hook, the rest of the book was good. In a book, I look for the characters first, the magic second and the story later. Anything that makes me care for the character is good for me. If the magic is good, it's a bonus. The Sorcerer has both. Hero, along with his two friends form friendship in peril early. Their later encounters.ade me care about them. Also the hero's relationship with the elderly policeman and his family, his fling with the niece all felt real enough. And the girl we saw at first, who ran away like scared little girl has two scenes, but she is interesting as well. The small mystery of the 'Cursed Artifact' sprinkled here and there was also good. Looking forward to more from the series.
A regression story that leads to an alternate Russia in the year 1908 that has magic and rifts. The important Russian historical events mentioned in the book are really exotic and give the story an interesting and nostalgic flair.
I quite liked the plot even though i am critical about parallel universe stories. The MC is likeable and not to op. So far, the reader hardly learns anything about his past and powers. He seems to be some kind of enchanter werwolf hybrid it seems, which is an intriguing idea. I didn't quite understand why he bothers going to school. He would be able to learn faster about the world at the public library.
Shallow with a questionable plot, it felt all over the place, lacking internal consistency —power wise between old and new life.) … also has odd twists. Then there is the odd weapon descriptions even though some could be acceptable with how it’s set in two alternate earth realities from ‘Real life’. But the one where the author can’t make up his mind about if his Browning is either a semi automatic pistol, a revolver or a weird nonsensical hybrid with variously a barrel, cylinder and magazine for ammo.
This is portal fantasy with some alternate history out of Russia. Now I'm not all that knowledgeable about Russian history so I can't comment about that. What I can comment on is that you will get a couple of monster fights, A couple of fights against the school bully and his henchmen, and lastly some fights against criminals. Overall it's a decent read. I only found one mistake.
Very good main character and the plot was interesting. I also enjoyed the supporting characters. It was not a book I felt I couldn't put down and it was a little vague on how the MC was getting his powers back and there was not much of a back story about the MC. This was almost like the start of a series that was written after a previous series describing how the MC started his life. I still would recommend this book.
Not sure where this is going. Almost no mc progression from the beginning of the book. Some minor translation issues making it a little confusing. (When they say 8th grade they mean 12th if you’re in America or year 13 in a lot of other countries.)
Still will give the next book a try. Definitely a slow burn at this rate.
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a fast paced adventure that kept my attention. At times the story just seems to loose it’s thread and wander to a new shiny story bit. I am a history nerd so I the alternative historical Russia was a wonderful setting. Overall, I plan to read next book in the series.
I’ve been seeing a lot of work out of Russia and I’m excited. They have such a viewpoint and their stories are great. I expect a different reaction and boom something completely Russian! I love this story it brings old folklore with a modern twist. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
Wow, what an interesting book. From the very beginning, you were given a wonderful view of Russia and Saint Petersburg. The story contained well, defined characters, detailed situations, and some really scary moments you wouldn’t want to read when it’s dark! Really enjoyable story.
Way too much Russian propaganda for me to keep reading, I don't know if the writer and the Russian people actually think that they defeated the Japanese Army but in any case the story was just barely good but not good enough to keep reading
Fun read that combines alternate time lines and going back in time, and a bit of urban fantasy. What interesting world building. Lots of action. Read in a day, it just flowed.
Love this book, I am so glad that books from other countries are being translated into English. So many awesome authors. And this book keeps you reading. Hard to put it down.
"I am the most epic sorcerer of all time! I have lived for millennia and changed the very face of the continents! Now for a bunch of minor scraps with schoolchildren and petty criminals. Also zombies but they go down even quicker than a child in a bun fight, apparently!"
You can tell this book is written by a true Russian. It’s tough and filled with people struggling against corruption and criminals in the midst of terrible creature outbreaks.
The story is fresh, not like the usual tropes and it's pretty fast paced. The mc is interesting and his back story and lore is still to be fully explored. All in all a fun and actioned packed book.
I really like the main character and how clever and capable he is. His friends are surprisingly loyal and entertaining. The only reason I gave it 4 I stead of 5 stars is because I didn't like the female characters. I get why the author wrote them that way but I didn't like it. Otherwise, great story!
