This is so sad - can’t believe they did a Merlin.

I have decided that the author likes horses but hates one particular horse.

I was really looking forward to this book and while I’d liked some parts of it, but it was a bit too long for my liking even though I usually like books of this length. It just didn’t work as well for this particular book. And look I’ll admit that I’d still preferred the first instalment over this sequel which I’d enjoyed immensely — more so because the first book had felt like it had more of an interesting and concise (and perhaps tighter) plot compared to this one which was much more complicated in parts with a lot of things happening at once and I also just didn’t feel emotionally connected to ✨ the romance ✨ this time round compared to that first book.

But overall, while I DO get what the author was trying to do here with her plot, her characters and heck even her ending, but it wasn’t what I wanted nor even expected. Like I’m sorry, but the ending just pissed me off. 😒 Again, I get it and it’s her story and no one else’s and she can end it in the way she wants, BUT I just didn’t feel good after reading this book and it wasn’t satisfactory to me as it seemed like there wasn’t much emotional payoff in the end and it also felt like the ending was cut off suddenly. I just needed more romance and more payoff from it I guess. At least that’s how I personally felt about that ending. 🥲 Though I’m sure other readers might have a different opinion to me and that’s great! I hope they enjoy it more than I did. As for me, I’ll just appreciate the romance that we did get in this sequel. Somewhat . . .

Note: The rating of this book was going to be a bit higher and I’m sad over my final rating, but the ending did affect it quite a bit. Sorry! 😞

A Wet Mess.

The Writing
I do not recall the writing of book 1 being this clumsy. The Yoda-like sentence structure was hard to parse and this was especially bad during the battle scenes, it was chaotic and confusing for all the wrong reasons.

The Plot
The author simply tried to do too much, it’s like she had all these ideas and needed to use them all up in this book and each idea ended up undercooked, which was most dissatisfying to read.
This story would have been better served with just half the plot but each with depth. Or, if we must include all the ideas then split it into a third book so each idea could have been better developed, this way, we wouldn’t have had the following frustrations. Spoiler Alert!

The Proofreading
The proofreaders need to be sacked - the number of typos were disgraceful, e.g. bread instead of beard, now instead of not!!! And what’s with all the extra prepositions? How could so many be missed?? This plus the flowery writing made it a very jarring reading experience.

I really enjoyed the first book so this was a massive disappointment. What was most disappointing for me was the author forgetting what made book 1 magical— the weaving of anatomy and song, that was unique, that’s the soul of the story but it was merely an afterthought in book 2. Yes, it was still there but it took a different turn and it just wasn’t the magic that it was. I see other new authors make the same mistake, e.g. Judy I Lin tragically forgot all about her tea magic in book 2 and it ended up being just a dull fiction.

I contemplated DNF’ing this book multiple times during the first 200 pages before it finally got going and again when it dragged with still a third to go. The only reason I persevered was because I have love for a fellow Australian physiotherapist, I like the author and wanted to support her.

One last thing. If ever there was a book that desperately needed a Dramatis Personae, it was this one.

Dark, gripping, and emotionally charged, this audiobook delivers a powerful blend of epic fantasy and tragedy. Kasira and Veridian are complex, deeply scarred characters bound by betrayal, love, and fate, and their intertwined stories are impossible to look away from. The twisted prophecy, vengeful gods, and political tension keep the stakes relentlessly high, while the mature themes are handled with brutal honesty. Rich world-building and intense emotional depth make this a compelling listen that lingers long after it ends.

😲 omg !!!!! 💔💔💔
Megan certainly knows how to lead an emotional roller-coaster of a story.
book 2 picks up straight after Kas's choice from book 1 and then it doesn't stop....
Veridian, Lhy, Eli, Sab, Kas and all the daughters just have to keep swimming in the rivers from 1 form of torture to another.... happy moments hit hard, revenge moments are so sweet but the heartbreaks along the way will cause rivers of their own.

A great follow up to the authors debut novel. The Anatomy of Gods has great character development and we learn to love and hate them through the authors writing. The story itself is detailed, moving and maybe slightly confusing with the storyline of the two gods and the prophecy and the songs. At times, the story is sad, funny, dark, gritty, and moving. There is alot to enjoy about this duology.

Not gonna lie, I'm pissed about the ending but the journey there pretty was fantastic. Read the last 200 pages in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.
