Quite a step up from the first entry in the series. Even more so for the rest of the Johnstone Clan series. Very good writing, plotting, characters all equals a great book.
The over lapping plots are a bit complicated, yet nicely stacked and shuffled including a number of twists and turns. Most of the Johnstone series would take any one of the plots and the end would be clear.
My standard Johnstone complaint is the lack of more realistic, for the time, dialogue. The lot sound as college graduates.
Bottom line: i recommend this book. 9 out of ten points.

I really enjoy reading this Texas John Slaughter series. Johnstone takes a real historical character and creates an interesting story about him. Since I have Slaughter relatives, I checked on the genealogy of Texas John Slaughter. He is not related to me, but is related to my cousins.

Sheriff John Slaughter had two things in Tombstone to worry him. Morris Upton had a big poker tournament going with players from all over and lots of money on hand. He also had a cowboy in jail for rape and assault. Accused by the daughter of a hot tempered rancher, she's two months pregnant and daddy is ready to lynch him.
Others have plans for the tournament winnings and players are being killed off. And the cowboy, despite his reputation for bedding any woman he could, swears he's innocent.
Another interesting s ting western loosely based on a real old west person.

Move over Smoke , there's a new Sheriff in town!
I love Bills Mountain Man series but Texas John is an actual person that lived near Tombstone . When I lived near Pierce AZ I heard and read about the Rancher John Slaughter.

I'm not a big fan of either fiction or westerns, so three stars is actually pretty good. The book was more captivating than I expected and the writing was quite good. If you are keen on westerns you'll probably enjoy the series.
