Vincent Black is the Prophet of the Dragon—a Seer given magical powers and the gift of prophecy by an ancient, red dragon. Determined to recover enchanted artifacts stolen from him, he kidnaps a Duke’s four-year-old son so he has a hostage to barter with.
Gabriel Lost is a windstriker—a stealth soldier of the shadows. Tasked with protecting the kingdom’s subjects from thieves, assassins, and religious fanatics, he is hired to save the boy.
But if he is to succeed, Gabriel must pursue Vincent to the Fortress of the Moon, a floating city where goliaths, witches, and the undead prowl the ruined streets. To defeat Vincent, Gabriel must overcome strange magicks and the horrors of his bloody past—and unravel the mystery that is the Prophet of the Dragon.
Mark Douglas, Jr. is an author living in South Florida, where he teaches, surfs, and creates imaginary worlds. He has a wife, three children, and a tame pet dragon named Shnookums. Well, that is not entirely true. He lives in Northwest Florida.
I picked up this book for the Popsugar reading challenge for a book by a local author. I find it rather unfortunate that this book doesn’t have a little more interest. I thought it was a rather enjoyable scifi/fantasy read. It did lack a bit in the world building and character development. But the characters do get more elaboration towards the end. I would have liked to have experienced more of the relationship between dragon and rider but I can understand where that would be difficult since we are mainly seeing the story play out from Gabriel’s perspective, and he was not a rider (at the time anyway!) The writing may not be top notch, but I thought the story was pretty good and nicely told.
Trouble is brewing in the Kingdom of the Four Winds and a collision of faith and loyalty awaits. The tribulations grow in severity and eventually all paths will lead to the floating city known as The Fortress of the Moon. Part myth, part magic, the Fortress is the key to every kingdom and its power to preserve or to destroy puts the whole world at stake. This story combines elements from familiar sources (what we creatives call influences) with fresh ideas and perspectives to create a single, exciting narrative. Adventure, thrills, magic, even a touch of romance... The Prophet of the Dragon is a full-spectrum story for readers of all ages and, if you're new to fantasy, a great place to start your own heroic journey. -Jim X Dodge, author of The Bite and Erogenous Jones: Private Dicktective
