Sinners of Blackthorne U #2

Bitter When He Begs

Rate this book
Luca
I’ve built my life on control. On the field, in my reputation, and in keeping my demons buried where no one can see.

Sage Blackwell was never supposed to be a part of that. The nerdy prodigy overheard something that could ruin my entire career, so I do the only logical thing. I don’t threaten him. I don’t scare him off.

I claim him.

I tell myself it’s about survival, about keeping my secret safe. But the longer I keep him close, the more I realize I might be addicted again.

Only this time, my drug of choice is him.

Sage
I wasn’t supposed to hear it.

I definitely wasn’t supposed to get caught.

One wrong step. One overheard conversation. That’s all it takes to make me the unwilling keeper of Luca Devereaux’s darkest secret.

Now, Blackthorne U’s arrogant, untouchable quarterback, has decided I belong to him.

He’s relentless, possessive and cruel in the way only someone with too much power and too little consequences can be.

Being owned by Luca might just destroy me… especially when I realize I don’t want him to let go.

***
Bitter When He Begs is the second book in the interconnected Sinners of Blackthorne U series, but it is a complete standalone. Readers are advised to approach with caution and ensure they are comfortable with the listed triggers and content warnings before proceeding.

Totally not what I was expecting, and I didn't consider this to be dark at all, but I ended up really loving these two! I do think the title was misleading again because the begging isn't like a frequent occurence, and I wouldn't describe Sage as being bitter either... So I'm not sold on the titling of the books in the series, but I do enjoy the dramatics, the OTT everything, and the possessive, feral and unhinged characters.

I could not figure out the timeline for this book at all though? They're at college and their relationship spans over ten months, the weather always seems hot when I swear it was winter in the previous book, and there's no mention of any school breaks or aging... I can't really figure out how this fits with book 1, or where the timeline is starting for the next book, which is quite frustrating but I'm trying to ignore how much it's bugging me to be so clueless!

Luca is a mess. No other way to say it, but I really liked seeing him come to terms with the fact he needed help and he needed to sort his life out before he didn't have a life left. Was it realistic addiction and recovery? I have absolutely no idea, but it was emotional and I really liked Luca's character.

Sage was a bit all over the place to begin with, but once his character became more consistent he was super sassy, sharp, and so entertaining! I loved the way he hated that he'd fallen in love with Luca! His dramatics were funny and he was really well suited to Luca.

Luca becoming a 'golden retriever with a porn star body' was probably my favourite part of the book though. I love how he was absolutely enamoured with Sage and how he had to learn to think about what his partner needed and what would make them happy, rather than just thinking about his own wants and needs.

I feel like these two put a lot of effort in to get to their HEA and I'm feeling more settled in this story world and can't wait to see what comes next.

Reread September 8,2025.
Addendum: As a reader, I'd be doing this book a disservice if I wasn't honest. First of all the addiction and ultimate rehab was handled well and was a story on its own. The cruelty Luca showed was pretty much explained (even though it felt unforgivable.) The thing is, the dynamic never went away, he was still cocky to Sage's total submission (which didn't feel all that great 🙃)

As much as I loved the story, the execution (for the first half of the book) was in fact, a little weak. The actual dialogue was pretty bad. I would ignore it (I'm not reading rocket science) but when Sage is described as 'having a sharp tongue ' and being a brat you kind of expect a lot more than retorts like "I hate you" and a shi*tload more than awkward moments with no comeback at all.

That said, I loved this story, again. Because the second half came back strong and fulfilling and told the story we wanted to read.
The character growth for both Sage and Luca is very visible and by the end we get a good glimpse of what these men would be in the future.
Things are dealt with and feelings are put out on full display never shying away, making them stronger.
A journey and a beautiful book.

First read thoughts:
Sorry, this isn't a review, it's me gushing and blabbering away at how much I freaking loved this book. It will be an incoherent mess. please, just read this book.🥰🌈🔥💥😎
Delicious cruelty at the start making my hackles rise, but Sage takes it even though confused.☺️ The journey and turn around are both somber and joyful and witty and beautiful. This book ticked all my boxes, every single one. Avery Collins did it again. Gorgeous writing, there are so many 'moments' that had me a puddle on the floor🥲
Me? I'm a fool for this and can't wait to get the physical copy.📖📚✨🪄
Such hope, such a strong brotherhood, such a great love❣️
And damn, I think I was in tears for the last 20% of the book. The closure, the impact , the satisfaction, chef's kiss.
🎉And yeah baby!!🥳 Liam and Nate are next!!!

ALL THE STARS

*To re re read again
*To buy paperback list
*Friendly warning, there is off page with other people (one time early on) but this is before they are together. It still stings a tiny bit though cause we are already focused on them.

This is so fucking repetitive! “I hate you”, “No, you love me”. I’m pretty sure I’ve read that same exact conversation like 25 times in the first 23%.

Then the same things are repeated several times in a row, but worded differently! Like we are too stupid to notice the same thing was just said but different wording! 🙄

Now for the 2 main characters! Both are annoying AF. I think both are bipolar and have no idea what they want. Their “hate” for each other is unjustifiable. They keep having the same hate fueled conversations over and over. The repetition is so bad in the first 25% it’s just ridiculous. It feels like I’m reading the same page 30 times! I can’t take this for another 400 pages!

And why the hell does Damon get his own POV in here? Keep that shit in his own book!

I’m out! I can’t anymore! DNF at 30%. Their back and forth is just too much. And with the book being 475 pages long, you just know that shit is just going to keep getting drawn out.

Don’t care enough to finish this series either.

Luca:
If you’re going to write a character who is absolutely cruel to their love interest, I need to see the good in them to root for their love story. This author had a case of telling rather than showing. The guys say that Luca is a great friend who has supported them… but I don’t believe that when all we’ve seen is him being absolutely terrible to Sage and genuinely being neutral at best to people around him. It’s classified as bullying but it comes across as verbal and emotional abuse. If you want an example of an author who brings a character back from being the WORST human being to someone you love and root for, read “Never Let You Go” by Lyla Dane.

Sage:
Sage did not feel like he fit into the frat. Not sure that was a necessary part of his character.

General:

History
It feels like there’s a lack of history or explanation/exposition at the beginning. It felt like we were dropped into a story at the 15% mark or further. We don’t see how this dynamic/relationship has resulted. It’s just one scene… BAM! Three months later and they’ve been physical but we didn’t see that.

Continuity
In book one, Roman plays hockey and Damon isn’t an athlete. This book is about a football player and there’s no clear distinction between the sports. They’re all in the locker room after practice and it implies they’re on a team together… but they supposedly play different sports. Sage specifically refers to it as “the football locker room” in chapter 1 so why is Damon there if he plays hockey? And why is Roman there at all when he’s not an athlete? This felt like continuity error. At the very least, it needed clarity.

Damon’s Chapter
No thank you. This isn’t his story. I understand the author wanted an outside view of the situation but Damon had his story. Adding one chapter from someone who isn’t a MC is super random. Also, if Damon struggled with addiction, I don’t remember hearing about that in his book. I remember he’s on prescriptions meds and that he experienced paranoia and voices when he was unmedicated after his brother’s death, but I don’t recall addition and detox being brought up. I could have missed it, but I don’t think I did. I don’t like when authors add details on later book because they support that plot but not in the original work when it probably would have been discussed if it existed then.

It’s generally very repetitive, especially early on. I think you could easily edit 100 pages out and use some of that space to delve into the historic but I was also invested. I definitely wanted to keep reading even if parts of it ticked me off. I think the author has a lot of room for improvement but I love these kinds of stories, so I hope this gets better and better as it goes along.

Lastly, I hate when authors try and drop a nugget about the next book but leave you hanging. It’s just a means to try and hook you. Just let me enjoy this story as it is and then decide if I want to read the next one. If anything, add a bonus chapter about it at the end or something. That random conversation about Nate and Liam was unnecessary to this have in this book.

Sage was shy and quiet for all of two chapters and then Luca got what he wanted and suddenly he was this bratty bitchy bottom……honestly everyone was doing jumps and hops character wise and they all contradicted their characters, besides damon and luca……

And since when were Roman and Damon on the football team???? I literally read the first book and they mention football all of three times unless i just wasn’t paying attention………For this book to be so long i feel like it was still surface level…little details matter in a long book because why did we just learn that Sage has a tattoo or that Luca was texting his father all this time????

Also Lee…..should’ve seen that coming and it was never that serious. I feel like this could’ve been better for how long the book was but extremely proud of luca AND his friends, they’re really a family!

✨ARC READER REVIEW✨

It’s taken me a few days to sit with this book. I’ve been trying to find the right words to express how I feel about Luca and Sage’s story. But the words still won’t come.
So, I’ll simply say that again, Avery Collin’s has blown me away!
This is my 6th book that I have had the pleasure of reading by this author and as I’ve said in almost all of my reviews, it just keeps getting better and better!! Honestly though, better doesn’t even express how Avery Collin’s pierces my soul with every book she writes. She touches on tough subjects and always writes these scenes so beautifully and with so much care.
Luca and Sage’s story was perfect. They were truly so good for one another.
I know Luca seemed so unfeeling and cold in the beginning, but honestly, I never truly hated him. When he sent Sage away, my heart actually broke for both of them.

I really felt that Luca had such a beautiful yet broken soul due to his childhood and ongoing trauma afflicted by his father. He also put so much pressure on himself by always feeling like he had to be on top, to always be the strong one, the popular one, the one who was always the life of the party. It doesn’t surprise me with the way he dealt with everything. At times he probably felt so hopeless!

And then along came Sage. Strong and sassy Sage.
Wow, his and Luca’s dynamic together was so freaking good!!!
It took Sage a while to realize that Luca really did care for him and that he wanted him in his life.
The chemistry between the two was pure fire.
Once they gave into their feelings, I loved how their relationship blossomed, and really made them both better people. Especially with Luca, he worked so hard to be the man that would be worthy of Sage’s love. I was so damn proud of him!
And holy moly, when Sage stood up and defended Luca, sigh…. 🥹 That was the best moment ever!!!

Also, I need to give a shout out to Sage’s dad!! He loved and accepted his son with no questions asked. I adored how much he liked Luca and saw how happy he made Sage!!

I could go on and on, about this incredible book, but I’ll stop here and say this series is everything!!! This book deserves so much more than a 5 star review!!

Thank you again Avery Collin’s for allowing me to be apart of your world and honoring me by allowing me to be on your team!

ARC REVIEW ✨️

This was my first book from Avery Collins & I'm mind blown! There was something extra special about this book. The nerd & the Jock! This book had some really tough subjects & was so well written, that I felt like i was on an emotional rollercoaster rooting for these two men.I wish we all had friends like Luca, they were amazing, supportive characters.Luca & Sage were perfection together. At first,Luca was the kind of character you love to hate, the cocky guy who gets what he wants.Sage was the attractive nerdy guy who was likable straight away, but boy when these two collided Sage was feisty & didn't back down, he gave Luca a run for his money & i was cheering him on.Luca ended up being such a strong, lovable character & i just wanted everything for him. This book had me hooked from the first page & by the time i was finished i didn't want it to end.

"This is what we do, right? When one of us is falling apart, the other drags him back."

I was counting down the days until Bitter When He Begs came out, and it surpassed all of my expectations. This series has just been a gift that keeps on giving, and I continue to fall in love with the characters the more I read about them. I don't think a couple can beat Roman and Damon as my favorite, but Luca and Sage came very close. And I already feel it in my bones that Nate and Liam will consume every thought in my brain when their story comes out. I’ve cried endless tears and laughed more than I thought possible.

I can't thank Avery Collins enough for bringing the wonderful Luca and Sage to life and depicting their stories with such raw and vulnerable topics that most people shy away from. It was beautiful and devastating to watch Luca’s journey unfold because that boy is a fighter and deserves to believe it. And this romance was EARNED with no shortcuts, as if Sage would give Luca any leeway until he fully made it up to him. Nothing was more rewarding than watching that trust and love build between them, which was developed phenomenally!

Wow! This was a rollercoaster of emotions! It was messy, toxic, emotional, and then there was so much growth, struggle and tenderness! Luca was manipulative and mean at the start, but he turned into the most tender golden retriever-y boyfriend I've seen in a while. He was possessive from the get go, but the way he just always wanted to show Sage off was very endearing. He had to work through his issues, but the strength and determination he showed, while also putting in all the work was great to see. Sage was sarcastic, bratty and sassy and I was here for it! I especially loved how he could dress people down with words. And when he did that to Luca's dad(who is not a loving father, btw) I was clapping and cheering! I loved that Sage stood up for Luca. I loved Luca and Sage together, they were exactly what the other person needed in a partner. Luca needed someone to see him for himself and Sage was the person to do that.
Definitely a very enjoyable read and I loved the range of emotions it put me through. Tender and sappy Luca will always be my favorite!

This is book 2 in the Sinners of Blackthorns U series by Avery Collins! It can be read as a standalone BUT I feel like you would definitely get a better reading experience if you read book one first just because there are a lot of interconnected characters!

Did I put all other books on hold and devour this book?.., yes yes I did! The writing in my opinion was chefs kiss 💋! I was very much hooked from line one and the book didn’t let me go till I was finished and even then it’s still living rent free in my heart!

I fell in love with Luca and his imperfections because it made him beautifully perfect in my eyes. He gave so much of himself to his sport, his school and most of all to his ugh of a father which lead him into not so great coping mechanism, but it was sooo good to see him shine not only for the one person that gave him the sun in human form… Sage 🥰 but also for HIMSELF! Once he decided to live for himself and not let the background noise AKA his POS dad and those pįłls rule his life he came to life in a phenomenal way! I very much appreciated and loved the way he LOVED Sage fully no stops!!
Then there’s Sage our bratty sarcastic funny nerdy boy! He is everything that Luca never knew he needed! What I loved most is that even thougb Sage may have his own insecurities he still shows up and fights not just for himself but for Luca too. They made such an amazing couple I loved every single moment!!

And good lawdd… The spice in this book was everything and a bag of chips definitely top notch!! I for sure ATE those scenes up!! They had just the right amount of spicy jalapeños with plenty of sauce and descriptions 🤭!! Seriously those scenes were hot as hëłł!!

Avery Collins delivered another phenomenal book and I cannot wait to see what comes next for these series!!

Happy Reading 📚

“I’d rather be scared with you than safe with anyone else.”

I absolutely loved Luca and Sage. Istg these two are just so perfect for each other. Even when they hated each other their chemistry was off the charts. But in true Avery fashion, there's so much more to this story than the fun, banter, and spice.

Luca is the star quarterback with a father who only knows how to point out the negative. A fact that doesn't help his addiction problems. I'm ngl, in the beginning of the story Luca was a complete ass and he only saw Sage as something to use, break, and discard. That being said, I loved his redemption arc. Luca Devereaux can do no wrong, and I will die on that hill.

Honestly, though, I absolutely loved Luca's journey. The author did an amazing job at portraying addiction struggles, how hard it is to recover, the importance of having a support system, and how easy it can be to relapse. I loved how the guys from the Sin Bin all came together and were there for Luca when he needed them the most, and even when he tried to push them away, they showed him what a true family is.

Now, Luca wasn't the only one who did some growing in this story. The difference between the Sage from the first chapter and the Sage from the epilogue was amazing. I loved every time Sage's brat side came out to play, and don't even get me started on the Sage nuke. I also loved how close Sage was with his father, and his friendship with Nate who I can't wait to see more of in the next book.

Quote: “I don’t even think I had a heart before you came along. You make me want to be better. To be someone better. And I don’t know what to do with that. All I know is that I don’t want to fucking lose it.”

Bitter When He Begs by @author.avery / @author_j.tarr

“I want to hear you beg. You sound so bitter when you beg-but f*ck, I live for it.”
.

Deliciously Depraved. Sinfully Sweet. Orgasmically Ostentatious. These are just a few of the ways that I would describe “Bitter When He Begs. Because quite frankly calling it hot, obsessive, over the top, and even toxic to tender wouldn’t be enough. It’s all that and then some.

The classic right place, wrong time puts Sage Blackwell on Luca Devereaux’s radar. Determined to ensure his secret never sees the light of day, Luca decides to claim Sage as his own.

It quickly becomes apparent that Sage isn’t going to shake Luca. He’s relentless, possessive, arrogant, and above all he’s cruel. However, what happens when ownership morphs into devotion/obsession. Moreover, what happens when Sage realizes he wants to be owned. The answer is a tumultuous, insanely hot, and addictive story.

While “BWHB” is spicy do not be fooled into thinking that’s all it has to offer. There are numerous times where Avery gives us gut wrenching dialogue and moments of complete anguish. It’s almost as if you yourself are first hand experiencing the turmoil that is Luca conquering his demons. Which just goes to show the sheer prowess that is Avery’s writing capability.

If anything let this be your sign that you NEED to read this book when it releases on July 5th.

I love this series! Sage and Luca are cute together. Were they perfect!? No. There were definitely moments when both of them could have handled situations better but once they got on the same page they were cute. Their first date was adorable! So thoughtful of Luca to do that for Sage.

Sage was so feisty when he wanted to be and I loved it! I love Sage nukes so much!! They were so good!!!

Seeing Luca struggling the way he did was hard. I appreciated seeing Damon step up and help him through this and it was good to see Luca had someone who had an idea of what he was going through. I loved the support system of the friend group and how it was clear they didn’t know what Luca was going through but that they were going to be there for him anyway. I am excited for book three and really getting to see Nate and his story and I’m still holding on to hope that we get Killian’s book soon!!!

Main character was a "richard"

I'm gonna be honest about 40% into the book, and my feelings for Sage started to nose dive. I wanted to like his character, but I just couldn't. Even with his few redeeming moments of showing love and support. There is a difference between being a smart arse and just being an arse. I get him being offensive in the beginning when Luca was a horrible person. But once Luca got sober and turned into a golden retriever, Sage just stayed a rude arse. Sage was literally. thinking how sweet Luca was being for taken him on a date. But the words coming out of his mouth were bitching how the date was an inconvenience. He literally was mad and yelling at Luca after Luca said "I love you". Sorry Sage ruined the story.

Bitter When He Begs Review

♾️/⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I already know that insta won’t let me post my full review (bc I have so much to say and such a short caption limit lol) so PLEASE go read the full review on my Goodreads account!!!!!

I wish for love of everything that I could remember who recommend this book to me, so I could give them a big fat kiss on the mouth. Seriously, thank you to whoever it was. May ur pillow always stay cold.

Anyway, let’s get into the actual review.

This book was the definition of a perfect book. Everything from the angst to the spice, then the characters, to the relationship. This is exactly how I wish every book was written.
The angst and tension were so high between Luca and Sage in the beginning. What better way to make sure someone keeps their mouth shut, than to claim them and make sure they know who owns them. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Sage obviously heard something he wasn’t supposed to, so what better way to make sure he doesn’t say anything than keeping an eye on him at all times and chasing away anyone who comes near him.
The possessiveness that Luca developed for Sage will forever be engraved into my mind. There was something about Sage that enamored Luca. He couldn’t quite figure out what it was at first, but the one thing he did know was that Sage dulled his darkness. Sage helped to keep his mind off the pills and away from anxious feelings.
This bratty, mouthy, little ray of sunshine was just what Luca needed to be able to breathe again.
Luca was dealing with so much under the surface that hardly anyone was able to see. Sage saw an arrogant, egotistical asshole who wouldn’t leave him alone. What was Sage supposed to think? All Luca had ever been was a dick to him and mess with his mind. What Sage didn’t see was the war Luca was having with himself.
Thankfully, Damon saw it. Damon saw the struggle, the internal battle, and the fake persona Luca would put on. I am so grateful for Damon. I honestly loved his pov in this story. (While I have not read the first book in this series involving Damon, I made sure to add to my tbr after I finished this book) Damon is such a good friend.
Like most addicts- Luca lied and tried to convince Damon that everything was okay and under control. Like most recovered addicts- Damon could see right through Lucas bullshit. Damon wouldn’t take no for an answer. Luca wanted to quit and he needed Damon to help. Damon endured all the yelling, crying, begging, and torture that Luca was going through as he was getting clean. Luca pleaded and tried to break down Damon, but thankfully Damon stayed strong for Luca and eventually things started to look up.
I enjoyed how Luca’s withdraw wasn’t brushed over or romanticized. This happens to real people and their ability to go through this process (however many times) deserves to be recognized. It’s not easy. It’s not fun. And it’s certainly not always obtainable. I also commend Avery for mentioning a potential relapse. (Let’s all say a big F U to Luca’s dad) This is something that happens. This is the raw, cold hard truth. I continue to be so gracious to Luca’s support system. I know it’s hard for him to say it, but from me, thank you.
I’m very happy with the way Damon handled the rest of the guys in the house. Making sure they knew the real truth: Luca is an addict and is in recovery. Nothing to sugarcoat, nothing to beat around. He was going to be in pain, both mentally and physically, and all they needed to do was support him and be there for him. Thankfully every guy rose to the challenge.
Recovery is different for everybody and I really appreciated how Luca’s experience was personal to him. I also really liked how he was able to set boundaries for himself. I was so proud of him. I couldn’t imagine how hard it must’ve been to make Sage walk away. He admitted that he had a problem and needed space. That’s the first step. Sage (bless his heart) could tell something was off with Luca, but trusted him enough to wait and give him his space.
This is just another reason why I absolutely loved this book. We got these big emotional moments where the MCs wanted each other so bad, but knew how to have self control and but trust in each other.
Thankfully again, we didn’t have to wait too long for their barriers to be brought down. While realistically they maybe, probably should’ve taken things a tiny bit slower, I still loved when the tension snapped.
Once Luca finally claimed Sage, all self control went out the window. This author has written some of the most spiciest spice that has ever spiced. When I tell u I was rereading the dialogue, and taking everything in so slowly (so I could get the best mental picture😉) I was going feral for these two. I love when both MCs are possessive over each other. You’re mine and I’m yours. You belong to me and I belong to you. Yes. Yes. Yes. Lucas mouthhhhhhhhh. Can we just talk about that. I have never highlighted more dialogue in sex scenes than I did in this book. It seriously deserved its own moment. Luca and Sage were made for each other. They were crafted to be together.
Sage started to have reservations (as any sane man would after starting a relationship with their tormentor) and wanted to take things slow. Luca completely understood and apologized for what he did. This was also not graced over and I thank the author, yet again for that. Luca acknowledged what he did was so wrong and terrible, then he apologized for what he said and did to Sage. Luca knew there was no way sage would forgive him so fast, but he was willing to remind him every second that he’s changed and is in this for the long haul.
Call me a sap but I absolutely love when characters display their affection in public. And when they claim them on social media?!?!?? UMM HELLOOOO. YESSS PLEASEEE.
God this book had me smiling, kicking my feet, giggling, and blushing. AND ACTUALLY MAKING MY HEART HURT FOR THE MCs
Like most readers- I was preparing for the shoe to drop around the 60-70% ish mark BUT THANKFULLY IT NEVER DID. Guys this is what I’m saying when I think every book should be written like this. Get all of the angst out of the way in the beginning!!! Let the groveling happen around half way then BOOM the characters have grown and the rest of the book is sunshine and rainbows. Gosh u don’t understand how happy I was when I realized these boys weren’t going to let any external or internal struggle affect their relationship.
Ofc many things still happened and obstacles needed to be jumped over but Luca and Sage did it as a team. That is the most important part in any relationship. You have a partner for a reason. They are meant to be with you through thick and thin. Include them. Don’t shut them out. Reassure them and make sure they know how much they mean to you. Luca and Sage weren’t always perfect but they tried. They put effort in. That all most people ask for in their partner.
(Please let me just continue to glaze tf out of Avery for a little bit longer lol)
I have so much to say but the second I think of something to add, my brain remembers something I should’ve added 5 sentences ago.
This is that feeling when everything is right. When ur coffee comes out the perfect shade. When u hit shuffle on ur music and the song u wanted to play originally, ends up being first. The joy on ur face when u ask for a 6 count nugget meal, but u end up with 7. It’s that feeling you get when no words can describe what’s going on in ur brain so ur forced to stay silent. This book was everything to me. I know I am probably forgetting SOOOO much to add (so I’ll probably be back later) Please bear with me because some of my thoughts may be jumbled up. I could say something right now that was meant to belong in the third paragraph but I’m too lazy to go back up and add it there.
Luca and Sage were the perfect blend of possessiveness and obsessiveness. They are the kind of couple that mark each other so everyone knows they belong to them. They are the kind of couple that go crazy when someone else puts their hands on each other.
Luca is the type to absolutely adore when Sage steals his clothes. Sage is the type to start drooling the second Luca walks into the room.
If I could pick the type of relationship I was in, it would be Sage and Lucas’s.
There hasn’t been a book that has captured me from beginning to end in a long time. There was never a point where I thought ‘I’m bored lemme scroll on social media’. I never once felt like the author was repeating herself.
When I say I hope to write as good as her one day, I mean it. Every word was used so well. Every sentence was structured so perfectly. Some of the most simple phrases had me taken aback because this author has a way. A way with words. A way with writing characters. A way with taking two boys and making them go on a journey of hate, withdraw, redemption, and love.
I hope it’s not too selfish of me to ask this but Avery, if ur reading this (and u got this far bc holy shit I need to shut up) I hope every book is like this. Obviously I know it won’t be down to a T but the outline and story following some similar patterns would fit so well with the other characters dynamics. I saw in someone else’s review that this is going to be a 10 book series and let me just say that I will be reading them all. Regardless of tropes. Regardless of couples. Who. Cares. Everyone needs to read at least one of Avery’s books. Everyone needs to experience this feelings of perfection. Take all my money. Take it all. I need all these boys in my life- on my shelf. Please.
I’m going to end this long ass review (someone needs to teach me how to write a normal length review) by saying I am so glad that Luca and Sage found each other. I’m so thankful for dumb frat hazing. I’m so happy that the world of MM romance exists, and lastly, I’m so beyond grateful that I live in the same time period as Avery Collins.
Once again, I am missing a lot from this book but honestly just read it. Experience it. And like me- fall in love with it.
Now to pick out the key points and shorten it for insta lol.

2,5⭐️ I went straight into this after reading and loving ’Pretty when he bleeds’ but unfortunately I didn’t enjoy this nearly as much. I found the story to be a bit all over the place and I didn’t love the main characters same way I liked Damon for example.

The book started out very strong and I liked their dynamics, it was intriguing and hot.

“Which means no one’s got your back yet. No safety net, no one to run to. Which makes you mine.”
“I don’t belong to you.”
“Not yet.”

(⚠️Minor spoilers)
However, then it took a turn. They got together very fast but soon after they just stopped, then they hooked up with other people. Then there was Luca’s addiction but that was like minor part of the book and Sage wasn’t even there for this. After that the dynamics just shifted completely. The story and also many of the interactions were all over the place and there wasn’t any clear plot. I felt like the characters and the conversations they were having were a bit immature (well they are younger but in the first book this wasn’t an issue). Also the banter was a bit repetitive, Sage saying ”I hate you” like million times. Also personally I don’t like all the Instagram/Tiktok mentions in a book. Toward the end I just kind of skimmed the Pages, it didn’t give us anything new. The 🌶️ scenes were also a bit disappointing after the dynamics shift. It wasn’t anything like in the first book.

I am a bit sad I did not like this but will probably give the third book still a chance.

Dnf 15% (7/15/25)

This needs more development. It makes no sense. And then the continuity issues from book one (which I also DNFd but noticed the continuity errors) were lazy

Sage is a new student at the prestigious Blackthorne University. Whether by a twist of fate or better said, his family’s legacy, he’s trying to complete a challenge set by his potential Sigma Rho Alpha brothers. And of all the places they could’ve sent him, they just had to choose the football locker room.
He only plans to grab something and leave quickly, but luck clearly isn’t on his side because he hears voices. That’s a bad sign. He tries to back away, but it’s too late. One moment he’s alone, and the next he’s cornered by none other than the university’s golden boy, the king of campus, the best quarterback: Luca Devereaux. Luca is looking at Sage with an intensity that makes him want to hide. This is bad. Very bad. And now this terrifying (but for some reason, incredibly sexy and attractive) campus king is threatening him. Sage decides to just keep his mouth shut and avoid him at all costs. But Luca has already set his sights on him, and he won’t stop until he’s had a little fun.
Sage and Luca God, these two had me hooked. Were they toxic? Yes, absolutely. It was a full-on cat-and-mouse game. There was something magnetic between them, but there were walls too.
But then… Luca hit rock bottom and had to ask for help, and that’s when we really see his growth. And the Sin Bin boys, his found family of emotionally-stunted athletes were there for him every step of the way. They never left their brother behind.
And Sage? He was the other anchor Luca needed. That boy who started off shy and easy to tease turned into someone who could call Luca out and protect him when he was vulnerable. With his quick comebacks and sarcasm, Sage became the light Luca so desperately needed in his life.
Now, the spicy scenes? Who doesn’t love a power bottom? And Sage? He’s definitely one. My jaw was on the floor when he started talking dirty to Luca. And Luca? That man is obsessed with his sunshine.
And Sage’s best friend, Nate? He’s the perfect definition of “I don’t bite, but my best friend does.” He was amazing. I absolutely adored him.
I really loved this book. I’m definitely reading the first one because this was my first in the series and damn, I loved it. Plus, we got a sneak peek of our next couple, and saying I’m intrigued is an understatement. There was tea in this book, but it hasn’t been spilled… yet. So, I’m super excited to find out what Nate shared.

LUCA AND SAGE ARE ENDGAMEEEEEE!! ❤️‍🩹

Ripped through this bad boy in 24 hours, while jet lagged. It is an enemies to lovers, himbo bully jock vs. bratty nerd, PEAK hurt/comfort sports romance in a college setting, and the main theme is addiction.

I was on the fence for maybe the first 1/4 of the book, enjoying the ride while not being totally sold on the characters and the author’s insight into their struggles, but that all went out the window as soon as I reached the real nitty gritty of Luca’s journey. I’m an addict in recovery myself, so I can be very critical and particular about how the topic of addiction is addressed in fiction and its accuracy. Avery Collins did a wonderful job with this. Luca is a prescription opioid addict, having been prescribed them years ago for a sports injury and then becoming reliant on them to function; this is a story I’ve seen in life many times, and it was told through Luca’s eyes with sensitivity and honesty.

The found family aspect of the boys in the Sin Bin has really been enhanced from Pretty When He Bleeds to this book, and honestly the support Luca received from them in this book GUTTED ME THOROUGHLY. Luca starts out as the classic life of the party golden retriever who’s simply going through the motions to maintain appearances, while numbing out all emotions and internal struggles with handfuls of Vicodin. Sage accidentally gets a glimpse beneath his mask by overhearing something he shouldn’t, so naturally the only solution in Luca’s eyes is to bully him to the point of a mental break. His detox process is rough and very true to life, and afterwards he distances himself from Sage because he recognizes his obsession with him as another form of addiction, which is SO REAL.

Luca and Sage’s journey towards each other is SO perfect, and had me openly crying on several occasions. Sage is a precious angel baby and a delightful brat, and how he sarcastically and resentfully fell head over heels for Luca over the course of this story gave me LIFE. Plus the spice is solid- brat/brat tamer happens to be a particular favorite of mine, and I’m a total sl*t for humiliation and spitting so… *fans self*.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Nate’s character in this book, but I’ll definitely give the next book in the series a shot as the first 2 were so successful for me.

Adored almost this whole book

I will start off by saying the first book in this series is still my favorite. This book does come very close and might have passed it if not for one part i didn't care for. The characters are really well written and incredibly different but just work really well together. The plot was well thought out and terrifically written. The portrayal and struggles with addiction felt honest and real. I felt his pain and need so clearly and my heart broke for him. Luca was so freaking good like his levels of worship made me melt so many times. He shows you what it feels like to be the center of someone's world. Sage is funny, sarcastic and just stays true to himself. He stands up for people he cares about and puts people in their place when they deserve it. Spoiler ahead.........
The only part i didn't like at all!!! was not that they slept with other people before they were technically together but the "who" Sage chose to sleep with. He chose someone close to the other mmc and did it with intent for him to hear. I get it he was proving a point and maybe Luca deserved the point kinda but like why couldn't he pick a rando. The fact he picked him almost ruined it for me because i simply couldn't get it out of my head. Maybe it's just me because i don't really like my possessive characters who are described as possessive to be with others at all on page. But the fact it was a roommate,a freaking friend!!!!of the other mmc i just couldn't get it out of my head. It just felt low and kinda more dirty then needed. If it was a rando at a party i would have been able to let it go sooner and not have it stuck up in my head overshadowing what should have been really great moments after that. It also felt like if you were going to pick a friend it would have had more impact on them, like more uncomforable moments between the friends or when they are all together than just the one pool party moment.
It still got five stars from me because it was so well written and because it may just be more of a me problem with that one thing. Still would recommend this series and this book is very worth the read :) Happy reading everybody and cant wait for the next 🤞hopefully no friends are involved lol

What a good surprise! This is my first book from this author and it definitely checked the boxes.

Luca and Sage were very interesting characters. Their relationship started heavy with the toxic ''I hate you but I'm obsessed with you'' vibe. And it worked for me, love me some unhinged possessive man. But the best part for me was the development for them as individuals and with their relationship. You can see it by how they started and how they ended as a couple, it feels almost two different stories, not in a bad way tho. It just shows how they both got to grow and start to respect and support each other.

I'd like to also point it out how grateful I am for the way Luca's struggle with addiction was portrayed. The author really went beyond giving the POV of a chapter to a side character who is an addict and is currently sober, showing how important it is to have a safety net but also the bad and good parts of overcoming your vice. The respect and importance Luca's sober journey got was also very well done. It's something very common in romance books, characters who are addicts, throwing themselves into a relationship at the beginning or before even starting the process of getting sober and for me it's not something that it's ok. So it was very special to me that Luca putted his progress as a priority before starting something serious with Sage.

Another great element is the friendships with the side characters. I love when best friends actually act like they have the intimacy and care for each other and it's not just thrown in the book for nothing, because the Nate and Sage scenes specially when they have their discussion and later when they talk it out was very appreciated. Nate's need to protect his friend from an idiotic man (sorry Luca lol) and the fact that Sage felt truly bad about the possibility of losing Nate in his life is just real bffs core for me. Also Luca's teammates/housemates were really important for his recovery and contributed for some very funny and emotional scenes.

In conclusion a great book with ultimate character developments.

Big fan of this one!!

The bullying aspect wasn’t over the top, and it was clear pretty early on that there was an underlying sexual tension fueling it. It didn't feel gratuitous, instead it served a purpose and set the stage for a much deeper connection.

I appreciated how quickly the story shifted from bullying into something more emotionally complex. It wasn’t immediate fluff, but you could feel the tension evolve into chemistry and, eventually, a genuine romance.

Once Luca and Sage do get together, it's absolute magic but still full of angst in the best way!! Luca's constant battle with addiction and his desperate need for approval from a father who sees him as a massive disappointment added real weight to his character. And Sage? A bratty pitbull in a chihuahua’s body. Impossible not to root for. Once he allowed himself to embrace his feelings for Luca, their bond really took off.

What also stood out to me was the strong sense of brotherhood woven throughout the story. Whether it was Sage with his best friend Nate or the unhinged Roman, or Luca’s football crew who stuck by him through his withdrawals and recovery…these friendships were just as compelling as the romance itself. The camaraderie and support these characters gave each other made everything feel that much more authentic and heartwarming.

One thing I did wish for was a bit more involvement from Luca's older brother beyond the single dinner scene. It was clear that he was on Luca’s side, trying to encourage him to not care about their dad’s opinion, and it felt like there was so much untapped potential in that relationship. A few more moments between them could have really added to the emotional weight of Luca’s struggle.

Watching them navigate all the obstacles from overprotective friends, near relapses, and the pressure of being in the spotlight while dating a football star was all incredibly rewarding. Their journey felt raw, real, and earned.

I’ll admit, it could’ve been a little shorter, but I liked these two so much I didn’t mind one bit.

Bitter When He Begs is Luca and Sage's story, and it's everything—sexy, devastating, raw, filthy, emotional, ultimately hopeful, and 100% unforgettable. It's a perfect storm of pain, healing, and undeniable chemistry that grabs you from page one and doesn't let go.

Luca Devereaux is the golden boy quarterback with a crumbling interior. Behind the charm and fame is a man struggling with addiction, a harsh and loveless father, and years of emotional damage. In the beginning, he's cruel—he sees Sage as something to use, break, and toss aside. But as the story unfolds, we get one of the most satisfying redemption arcs. Luca's battle with addiction and recovery is portrayed with honesty and weight. The support he receives from the Sin Bin guys is heartfelt and powerful—they become the found family he never had, showing him what love and loyalty really look like.

Sage, on the other hand, is a character you can't help but root for from the very beginning. He's vulnerable, fiery, and bratty in the best way, and his growth throughout the story is truly incredible. By the end, he's not just stronger, but he's truly free in a way he wasn't before. His close bond with his father adds a layer of emotional depth, and his friendship with Nate is a highlight I'm dying to see more of. And that Sage nuke moment? Pure gold!!!

Their chemistry is not just intense, it's captivating. Even when they're at odds, the tension between them is magnetic. The spice is intense, filthy, and toe-curling, but it's never just about the heat. There's a depth of emotional grit behind every scene that will keep you turning the pages. Avery, your writing, as always, is amazing, and I can not wait for the next book in this series.

Bitter When He Begs ARC Review:

Luca and Sage 💜☀️

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time has Sage crossing paths with Luca, the college quarterback with a secret that Sage was never supposed to overhear. Instead of regular threats to keep silent, Luca fixates on Sage to the point of claiming him when he can’t seem to shake Sage from his system.

Returning to the characters I fell head over heels for in Pretty When He Bleeds with Luca and Sage’s story, I can’t stress how much I loved each little reveal inside the lives of this found family of friends as they take turns finding love when they least expect it. Luca and Sage have a less than smooth start with all that Luca hides and how he behaves towards Sage, but I loved the road they traveled to get to where they did even with the pain along the way. What Luca goes through in this book is handled with such love and care, with raw and often heartbreaking moments that don’t sugar coat all that he is going through and will go through. I love how possessive they both were, how Sage could use his calm yet sarcastic way of speaking to stand up for himself or anyone he cares about. How Luca lets his friends see more than the persona he keeps up and finds family in his housemates and friends, a support system that wants to see him thrive, had me fighting off tears. I loved these guys in the first book and I love them even more after book two.

This series continues to hit hard and make me feel so many emotions for these characters. Luca and Sage make wonderful additions to this world's couples. I am chomping at the bit for more, but I’ll keep swooning and getting misty eyed for the two couples I’ve fallen for so far in the meantime.

**ARC REVIEW**

Holy. Hell. 😱

This book had me hooked from the first page and didn’t let go.

Luca Devereaux is the kind of guy you hate at first. The rich, cocky quarterback who thinks he’s untouchable. But the moment he crosses paths with Sage—a quiet genius with a razor-sharp mind—it’s over. Sage accidentally finds out Luca's darkest secret... and instead of just trying to silence him, Luca claims him in the most possessive way. 😳

Did I binge-read this in one sitting? Obviously. Did I regret it? Nope. 😂 (Zero self-control, who am I kidding?!)

This book has EVERYTHING: dark college romance, possessiveness, “touch him and die” vibes, boderline obsession and so much emotional chaos.

And the spice level?

"Tell me sunshine, do you like it slow and sweet, or rough and messy?" 🔥 Seriously, I needed a fan. 😏💦

The character development? Chef’s kiss—I couldn’t stop flipping pages. Watching Luca and Sage’s journey was an emotional rollercoaster I never wanted to get off. 🎢

Avery Collins did a FANTASTIC job with this book. Her storytelling is gripping, and the emotional depth is unreal. I loved every second of this wild ride and can’t recommend it enough. Definitely one for your TBR! 📖✨

I can't wait for more books in this series. There’s so much more to uncover, and I’m hooked! 😍
