I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really need to start paying attention to the length of books I read. This is a novella and it was just too short for everything that the author should have included.
We meet Milo Hayes in the beginning of the book. It is his 18th birthday. He decides to skip school and go into Detroit. He is drawn to a fortune teller's shop. He wants to know about future love. He's in the closet and a virgin. The fortune teller, Madam Cassandra, tells him that there is a man in his future. Remember, he's in the closet and no one knows, so he's thinking what's going on. The cards fly from the table and one cuts him. Just a paper cut, but he still bleeds a little.
He eventually leaves the shop and discovers he's been in there for hours. He can't get a signal on his phone to call his mom. He does see that he has several missed messages and texts from her. He goes home and is stopped by a man. As it turns out, it's not really a man. It's a demon sent to kill him.
Milo is a demon hunter, and whoever sent it knows. Demon hunters don't come into their powers until they turn 18. He hadn't turned 18 yet, so he's vulnerable. He is, however, saved by another hunter, Silas. Milo is nearly killed by the demon before Silas whisks him off to his home. It would be a bit difficult to try and explain what happened to him at an ER. As he drives Milo to his home, Milo begins his Awakening into a hunter.
New hunters give off extremely strong pheromones which affect Silas. They eventually arrive at his home and eventually have their spicy time. Then he pulls "this was a mistake" and crushes Milo.
This has been done a thousand times in books and I for one, am fairly tired of it, especially since Silas changes his mind fairly quickly. I understand the need for the angst, but I rather see more hunter action than emotional constipation.
We get a happy ending so the rest is fairly predictable. It's a short read which really should be expanded with more action.
