Wilder Angels, demons, hellhounds, Nephilim, and a whole host of other non-mortals—my pack of adopted hellhound sons sure knows how to pick a place. And yet somehow, the most interesting one of all is the sad, quiet human who’s become friends with the pack. Helping people heal and learn to trust is a specialty of mine, but I don’t see Josh as someone to adopt—my hellhound sees him as a mate. The problem? Josh doesn’t believe in anything supernatural. Plus, there’s the vicious and oddly hard to track ex-boyfriend, the meddling but strangely helpful sheriff, the delicate side project I’m working on, and the immortal evil rich guy running around. As I said, my boys sure know how to pick a town.
Josh I’m the boring one. No imagination. No fun. In control. My ex-boyfriend taught me how to let loose and explore things, but then he changed… or maybe I just realized who he truly was. I want someone who cares for me, not someone who controls me, but I don’t think Rick will let me go easily. Everyone is willing to help, though, including the handsome dad of my best friend’s boyfriend. My inappropriate feelings for him aren’t helping matters, though. Not to mention that the more I hang out with everyone, the more my writer friend's supernatural stories suddenly don't seem so far-fetched. Something is strange about Paradise Falls, and I can’t help but think that Wilder is more involved than he lets on.
It’s always the quiet ones (wink, wink); Josh doesn’t believe in hellhounds, but they believe in him; Wilder is just the hellhound to give Josh all the comfort and healing he needs; Helene is the best therapist for someone who’s been wronged; the entire pack gets involved (of course) and chaos ensues; abusive ex-boyfriends always get what’s coming to them; there’s torture and death (but only of really bad people); hellhounds have tails, and they know how to use them.
I seem to be in the minority because I didn’t like this one at all. Ugh I’m super disappointed because I was very interested in Wilder’s book but it didn’t live up to what I thought it would be. I liked Wilder a lot just like all his adopted sons but I’m not gonna lie I did not like Josh. I hate not liking a character that was abused because I feel sympathy for what he went through but he annoyed me so much. I hated how he was always yelling and telling all the guys what to do. Like I loved Q’s sassiness I found it endearing but Josh’s sassiness was exhausting. By 56% I was so ready for this book to be done.
I also got tired of reading about his ex. He thought about him every time Wilder did something his ex never did and it got old. I could have also done without him telling Wilder how great him and his ex’s sex life was.
Idk if I’m petty or if I’m just used to morally grey characters, but the fact that Josh was abused by his ex for years and still worried about his well being and wished him no ill will really bugged me. And how Josh’s best friend went to the hospital to check on Josh’s ex, Rick, to make sure he was alright and Josh is all thank you for doing that? Like what?!! Never in my life would I ever go and check on my besties ex WHO BEAT THEM!! wtf??
Ugh I’m bummed we aren’t getting Jude and the sheriff next. That’s the only reason I finished this book was because I’m waiting for their book but to find out we have to go through another one to get it is frustrating!!! Though I am curious about Corbin. Kind of pissed at Sebbie for checking on the abusive ex though so he’s not my fav right now.
Also to the author can we please start normalizing putting the characters description in the book. We have no idea what anyone looks like. Not hair color or eye color or height or anything. I mean we can guess what one of the MCs looks like based on the cover but we have no idea about anyone else! It’s so hard to picture the story I’m reading because idk what anyone looks like.
NO CHEATING OM DRAMA (Josh’s abusive ex who wants him back) NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP AGE GAP (who knows because we are never told any ages of any characters in any book in this series) HFN/HEA (mates)
How to Trust a Hellhound is book four in the Hellhounds of Paradise Falls series by Shannon Mae. I have loved this series from the start and I’m still giving this four stars because I’ve gotten so attached to all of these characters, I didn’t care as much for this one as the others. I felt so bad for what Josh had been through but I still just didn’t love him as much as I have the other characters.
We met Josh in the previous books. He is a close friend of Sebbie and the other human mates of the pack. Josh is a financial advisor. He loves order, loves his data sheets and considers himself a boring person. He knew deep in his heart for awhile that his relationship with Rick was over. But he kept holding on, trying to please him. When Rick finally took things too far and showed his true self, Josh finally left. His friends and the pack came to his rescue and moved him in to a cabin on their property. The thing is, Josh doesn’t have any idea what the pack really is. He doesn’t know that there are many non-humans living in his little town.
Wilder is the “dad” of the pack. He adopted each one of the guys when they were young and raised them. They are a close knit family. He has felt for awhile that Josh was going to be pack, that he was something special to him. When Josh moved into the cabin, he knew this was his chance. But he had to take things slow, let him get over what happened with his ex. He would gain his trust and prove to him that they were mates. Most importantly, though, he was going to have to tell him what they really were! Would he run, or would he accept him?
Josh’s ex isn’t giving up easily, though, and manages to get himself mixed up in something so much bigger that brings even more trouble to their little town. We also get introduced to a new character, Thea. I’m not sure what role she’ll play in the future books but I liked her snark. We also finally find out just what Sebbie really is! Which will be the focus of the next book, How Not to Kill a Hellhound.
I’m glad I read this just so I’m up to date with everything for the next book but as I said, I just never really felt much for this couple. It might also be their bedroom kink which I don’t really care for. I’ll leave that for you to decide, though.
It's taken me a while to realize I really don't like fated mates books.
They remind me of an arranged marriage -- the MC's just HAVE to get together because they're DESTINED and FATED and SUPPOSED to, not because they organically found and love each other.
I digress...
Abuse was notttt handled delicately here. Nobody goes around saying "I have trauma to work through. Oh you have trauma? Me too!"
Josh was in an abusive relationship with Rick for YEARS - YEARSSSSSS - So why is he having sex right after coming out of the relationship, and..... ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM:✋ Wilder was lowkey gross. Gave off creepy grandpa vibes. For their first kiss he didn't ask if he could kiss Josh, he just did. On page 45, 19% of the way through the book, Wilder says, "I decided if Josh needed a willing bed partner, I would be available".
BRUH. BACK🤺YOUR🤺GERIATRIC🤺ASS🤺UP🤺. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THIS KID.
Also gave me the ick when Josh became a mother figure to his friends and the boys (who are much older than him) after he starts dating Wilder. Could you imagine, if your dad's mid-20's boyfriend started reprimanding and disciplining you? I was cringing so hard when he was 'telling them off' and grounding them. Ickkkkkkk. 🥴
The plot went off the fucking rails at the end and I just lost interest. You know it's bad when you start skimming the sex scenes. Lol.
All the hellhounds blend together. The plots are copy-pasted. Even their sex tails are the same. Prolly won't be continuing the series.
Oh I'm really loving this series. I also recently re-read Shannon's other series and that added an extra level of fun for me with this series. It's such a fascinating world she created and her characters are a wonderful.
This fourth book is a bit more emotionally charged for me because Josh and I have a lot of similarities. Abusive relationships are tricky to write about but Shannon handled it with grace and care. It can be hard to believe the romance when one of the MC's is coming out of a situation like that though, but I didn't have that issue here. I didn't doubt Josh and Wilder's bond even for a second. It was a beautiful romance underlining the subtle overarching plot.
We also find out a bit more about Josh and Toby's friend Seb, which... WHOA. So excited for Seb to get his book, but I believe that is next, so yay! But, I don't want to give away too much, so I'm going to just tell you that, if you love paranormal romances, you should check this series out! Each installment is better than the last and I can't wait to see what happens next.
I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Man, I'm bummed. This had the potential to be my favorite in the series because I love a good hurt/comfort story, but the editing was just - nonexistent. 🫠 Sometimes I hate Patreon because you can tell this book was written chapter by chapter. It reminded me a lot of the Neve Wilder series where - yes - everything is super fun and quick but also everything gets repeated to hell and back because no one edits this to *make sense* as a narrative readers will devour instead of read a chapter a week of and forget half of what happens in the meantime.
By the fourth time Wilder's POV (not Neve Wilder, but the love interest lol) started with the exact same first paragraph (I wanna see Josh but I can't because he needs space and I respect that because I'm a cool dude and I'm so in tune with ze feels) I wanted to throw in the towel. Like. Show me? Stop telling me the exact same 5 sentences whenever the POV changes? I promise I still know Wilder wants Josh? I can keep up?! The math is mathing, bet!!
Actions were also constantly repeated ad nauseum and mostly made no sense, e.g. there's one scene where we get told 3 times within two pages that Wilder is a solid weight, a solid support, a steadfast pillar that Josh leans against but thinks he shouldn't. Um. Don't tell me people edited this multiple times and didn't catch aaaaaaannnyyy of these repetitions because that happened pretty much every chapter with one thing (it's giving he leaned against the doorframe when they're actually outdoors in old Wattpad stories) - not to mention the same spiel about Josh's ex over and over again. I don't care if you tell me everything instead of showing anything, but then at the very least only tell me once, max twice?
Le sigh. Still, it goes to show how much I like this series that I persevered...keeping all my fingers crossed Corbin's story redeems this series for me. 🤞🤞
I'm so happy for Josh finding his HEA! He def deserves one with the hints we have been getting about his life in the past books.
This book has all the stupid hellhound-ism you'd expect. Im glad Josh's story was told with respect. You get all the gooey happy feelings reading this book as with the others.
I didn't personally care for Josh's nickname in the book Wilder and Josh's relationship moves fast, a little too fast for me but it is so cute. I just wish we got more time with Toby! This is his best friend and I felt like we got more of everyone else instead?
The action at the end was good, the plot was plotting. Excited to see what's next!
(2.5/5) There we have it. The point where an entertaining but slightly ridiculous series takes a turn towards weirdness and ridiculousness. I have to say, as much as I was expecting to get to this point, I'm a little disappointed. Especially because it was Wilder's story.
I was super intrigued when I found out Wilder was going to be the next hellhound of the group to claim his mate. We've had hints throughout the series linking Corbin and Seb, along with Josh and his sheriff. Turns out, their father is just a bit ahead of those possible couples and it couldn't have happened at a better time for his mate Josh. We knew something bad was going on between Josh and his ex-boyfriend Rick. Thankfully, the time had finally come for Josh to exit that abusive relationship, and he was able to walk himself right out and into the safe and comforting arms of Wilder. It just may have taken him to bit to truly understand whose arms he was finding his solace in.
Wilder and Josh's romance had a sweeter note than the previous books. These men were both caretakers at their cores and it was so lovely seeing them both navigate that aspect between them. It was a delicate balance having someone treat you like an equal partner, but to also let them be able to hold you up as well. Somehow these two fell into the perfect balance of it and I smiled every time one of them would do a little cute something for the other.
Though Josh and Wilder were soft and sweet with one another in their daily lives, that did not totally extend to their bedroom activities. Josh liked a bit of bite with his pleasure and Wilder was all too happy to comply. They both got off on bringing their partner pleasure so you can imagine how hot their encounters tended to be.
One aspect I didn't expect and very much enjoyed was how easily Josh slotted into pack life as Wilder's partner and mate. He had no trouble chastising their boys when they got out of line. It was pretty funny actually. It was also totally adorable when Wilder would talk about them like they were still a bunch of teens or how he still enjoyed indulging them like little kids in a candy store from time to time.
While Wilder and Josh have settled into their new lives, there is still much left to do when it comes to the plotline. Things have sort of ramped up in that aspect and I have no idea what will be coming down the line for the pack to deal with. I am however ecstatic that Corbin and Seb are going to be next. Corbin is such a mystery and has always drawn my attention with his witchy vibes. I can't wait to learn more about what he and his own fascinating mate Seb can do!
Not my favourite from this series. It was quite cringe picturing Josh as the "stern mum". I don't know, it might be a me thing but I struggled with the rhythm of the story. The introduction of the cult was a nice touch, but it became relevant for action at the very end and the way it was resolved seemed a bit too plot-device-y for my liking.
I was so excited for Wilder and Josh’s story! And I was not let down. I love how Josh dealt with the supernatural aspects, with a little hysterical laughter. I just know wilder is a sexy, silver fox and someone perfect for sweet Josh.
Also that Josh was not just a perfect mate but partner for Wilder. They really developed beautifully with the pack.
“You’re my boys, and everyone of you is worth everything to me. You’re pieces of my soul walking around outside of this vessel, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. You have all been a gift!”.
Wilder and Josh's story is so sweet! All the hurt/comfort all the time. Josh has lived through an emotionally and physically abusive relationship and watching him heal and learn that he can have a healthy, nurturing relationship with Wilder was SO lovely. Shannon Mae did an amazing job of writing Josh's journey.
The humour as always was on point and I cackled my way through his. Wilder may be a first generation Hellhound but he is just as clueless about humans as the rest of his pack. And the miscommunication between Wilder and Josh about hellhounds was hilarious! This is the miscommunication you WANT to read, trust me.
The spice was wonderful, full of emotion and all about overwhelming each other with sensation and pleasure. I loved it!
I adored this book, and it's ranking with Aiden and Fluffy's story for my favourite of the series so far.
Incredibly excited for the next book!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
DNF at 52% I tried, I really tried, but I just couldn’t do it. This book was SO BORING. and incredibly simplistic. It’s just narrative with the characters telling me instead of showing me, and why does Wilder who is apparently millennia old sound like an immature 20 something. It made no sense. And I have to say it THE NICKNAME. It’s TERRIBLE. Mei Ume? I don’t know what Mae thought she was doing, because she clearly doesn’t know Japanese. Ume means plum tree sure. Mei means niece. So Wilder was calling Josh his plum tree niece for the entirety of the book. Now Mei DOES mean Plum Tree in CHINESE as far as I know, so Mae might have simply been having Wilder call Josh his plum tree plum tree 😭😭
By the time I finished the first sex scene I realized I couldn’t do it, I’m out
I need to get this off my chest: That nickname was atrocious.
Anyways, there were aspects I liked, but I wasn't completely sold on this instalment in the series. I'll definitely continue, because I've grown fond of the ridiculousness, I like the safety and the plot-armour, and I think the overarching plot is getting interesting-ish.
But yeah.
Josh and Wilder had some moments, but nothing memorable as far as I'm concerned.
I normally don’t go this low unless the writing itself is really bad. This is a special case - the writing is pretty good but the story was really not to my liking.
The pace between the two MCs was totally off, much too fast, too little showing of developing feelings. It was just there - the love. In less than a week. This was done much better in the last book.
Also the general chemistry between them was just nonexistent. Wilder was like a grandfather type and yes - there was self reflection, but that did not spare me the cringy feeling.
And last point, which is totally my thing and might be a reason other readers will give this book 5 stars: the “Comfort”-part in this book was at least 2 levels above my comfort level and 3 levels above every plane of common sense and realism.
I will continue the series and hope this was the odd one out.
I've been waiting for Josh's story because I knew it would be chocked full of hurt/comfort vibes and I was right. Poor Josh went through some shit, and Wilder went right into role of protector. It was a bit instalove-y, but they acknowledged it and made it part of the plot so it all really worked out.
Just like with all the other books in this series, there's lots of fun banter, some nice spice and the family/friend interactions are just great. Such a solid series! You really get to see a lot of the past couples because of the connected plot, so that makes it so much fun! Not too much to say, just a great series that you should read if you are into PNR.
Urban Fantasy MM Shapeshifters Hurt/Comfort Fated Mates Insta-Lust (Love) Low Angst Spice: 🔥🔥🔥
OMFG.🙄 I love this series, don’t get me wrong, but why tf aren’t the hellhounds…hellhounding?
Book 1: normal shifter vibes. Book 2: absolutely zero shifting but loads of discussion about it. Book 3: Atlas is almost exclusively wolf-shifted. Book 4: zero shifting but minor tail play.
Wilder is a first gen hellhound and there’s small bits of discussion about his abilities but that’s it. He. Doesn’t. Shift. At. All. Book 1 has Dexter lighting everything on fire with how much he shifts. And it’s WILDER that doesn’t do it??? I feel robbed. I know that Josh is skeptical but so was Q. The entire series centers on the fact that they’re a family of hellhounds but only 2? of them take actual form at any point in this series?
It’s so strange to me honestly. Wilder is the big daddy of hellhounds and we literally never see that at all? He’s literally just…a father and a partner for 99% of the book. He just walks around talking to people. Zero hunting. Nothing. And I have deja vu about writing this because I’m fairly sure I shared the same sentiment with Liam’s book.
I love this series and I stand on that but it leaves me feeling like I missed something huge when I finish and it’s really disappointing.

How to Trust a Hellhound is the fourth book in Shannon Mae’s Hellhounds of Paradise Falls series. While each book features a new couple, the larger story arc carries across the series, and though some of the background is provided, I think readers will enjoy these most read in order. I really like this sort of quirky paranormal series and have been eager for Josh and Wilder’s story. The book starts out as Josh is breaking things off with Rick and comes to the hellhound compound for a safe place to stay. The early part of the book focuses on Josh working through moving forward from Rick, as well as his budding relationship with Wilder. There is a sweet caretaking vibe here for Wilder and he is a source of comfort for Josh.
We learn here who is up for the next book and I am SOOO excited, as they are both such intriguing characters. I will be keeping my eyes out for the next installment.
It felt so good to be back with the Hellhounds in Paradise Falls. It's never dull in Paradise Falls, and if the hellhounds aren't getting up to mischief than there is a cult and an abusive ex to stir things up. We've known Josh from the first book, since he's one of Toby's best friends, and I feel like we got enough crumbs to know that his relationship isn't a great one. We've known of Wilder from the start since he's the boys adoptive father but now he's also moved to Paradise Falls. I loved all of the hurt/comfort in this story. Both Josh and Wilder are caretakers and I loved seeing them take care of each other. It was interesting to see them navigate the caretaking aspect since Josh needed to feel like an equal partner to Wilder. I loved how Josh so naturally stepped into kind of a step-dad role with the hellhounds and put them in their places when needed. All of the hellhounds have been oblivious to things to some extent and Wilder is no exception. I really enjoyed watching them navigate their connection. This was a lot of fun to read. It was funny as usual, I loved the snark and banter. I can't help but love all of the characters, I love their pack and the connections they have. I love that we get to see so much of the characters we know and love, but that we can also see another lovestory blossom. Josh is the perfect mate for Wilder. Both are caretakers and Josh so easily handles the boys(which was so fun to watch), I loved him reprimanding them.
If you're in the mood for a fun story with paranormal elements and immortal characters that will have you entertained from start to finish, then this is the book for you.
This author has good ideas but can’t seem to get them out properly.
So much is missing in the series. What do the characters look like? How do the humans feel about IMMORTALITY?! Why the fuck do they have tails but only during sex my god.
This one extra annoyed me cuz honestly Wilder is some creepy old dude everyone treats like a God and he talks like a cult leader.
Josh wanting to still be kind to his abusive ex is actually insane.
The author still doesn’t know the correct use of “so&so and I” vs. “so&so and me.”
I love being in this world 🥰 Wilder and Josh were so precious! Liked the story too, got a plot twist that I didn't see coming. And now I can't wait for the next book!
welcome back to Paradise Falls! Where the unique come to live and exist as peacefully as they are able to. Josh reaches his breaking point in his long, needed to be done relationship and seeks help from Liam & Fluffy. Wilder takes his time (well, slowly in hellhound terms) in courting and allowing Josh to see he is truly loved and accepted by the pack. Let's pretend Josh doesn't live in complete denial of his pack quirks, but it works with the balance he brings to these hellhounds. I truly loved how Wilder let Josh lead everything til they got intimate when he took charge in the perfect way to allow Josh to be vulnerable. Mix in with some teasers of our last two pack members finding their mates, and the next two stories are sure to be as wild of a ride as their predecessors, and I know I cannot wait to read!
