Freddy is back -- and he's ready for second grade! Freddy likes his new second-grade teacher, but he doesn't like being stuck with Max and Chloe -- especially since his best friend, Robbie, is in another class! Is Freddy ready to reach out to the new student, Josh, and make a friend?
Abby Klein was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She earned her teaching credentials at Dartmouth College, where she majored in psychology and education. She then went on to earn her master's degree in reading and language development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Currently she teaches in the same public elementary school she attended as a child in the Los Angeles area. She has been a kindergarten and first-grade teacher there for more than fifteen years and is very involved in the school community, as both a teacher and a parent. Her two young children also attend the school where she teaches. In addition, she is a “teacher-leader” in her district, and over the years, she has presented many staff development workshops both at the district level and at her school site that centered on reading, writing, and literacy. She has been a presenter at national conferences as well.
In her first published series, Ready, Freddy!, Klein brings just the right amount of true-to-life humor and drama. She brings young readers a fresh voice, a great sense of humor, and a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of first grader Freddy Thresher. Utterly authentic and drawn from real experience in the classroom, Abby Klein knows exactly what first graders are thinking.
She lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband, two children, and three dogs. She thinks there's nothing better than a good book, and she loves reading aloud to children.
Ugh, awful! This book modeled horrible behavior, constant name calling and posturing by the characters. On the literary side there was an absence of high level vocabulary, interesting dialogue and imagery. I will not include this book in my classroom library.
Summary: Freddy is bummed out about being in the second grade now because he and his best friend Robbie are in separate classrooms! They've been together ever since they were in kindergarten, but with second grade comes lots of changes. Instead of having his best friend there with him, Freddy has to face Max and Chloe everyday, and not even is nice second-grade teacher can make it bearable. Freddy's father and sister, Suzie, suggests that Freddy reach out to the new student in his class, Josh, because he might be lonely without his best friend, too. Will Freddy make a new friend and learn to love second grade - even without Robbie?
Questions: 1. Compare and contrast Freddy's two good friends, Robbie and Josh. Why do you think they became such good friends with Freddy?
2. How would you rewrite the second grade experience from Robbie's point of view? Do you think not having his best friend in the same classroom as him also made him sad?
3. Design a fun and harmless prank you could play on a friend like the one Freddy and Josh played on Chloe. How do you predict your friend would react?
4. Write about a memory you have of the second grade and compare it to Freddy's experience of the second grade. What are some similarities and differences between your time in second grade and Freddy's?
5. If you were Freddy, would you have chosen to befriend Josh? Explain why or why not.
Klein, A. (2014). Second grade rules! New York, NY: Scholastic.
Not a lot to like in this book. I kept waiting for some kind of conflict but all I saw were kids being kind of bratty and not a lot of story. On a plus side, this book is easy to read and had a main character who I think could be interesting. Just...there wasn't much done with him in this story. I wonder if the other books in the series improve or not...
The kids started checking out any and all Ready Freddy from the library after this one. Not sure if they are reading them, or just looking for the hidden FIN in each picture...but they're opening a book, so that's a win. :)
