The Birth Place gave her sanctuary

Hope Tanner escaped from her polygamous community in Superior, Utah, ten years ago - pregnant and alone. She ended up at The Birth Place in Enchantment, New Mexico, where Lydia Kane, the clinic's founder, handled the private adoption of her baby. A baby Hope never held...and never stopped thinking about.

Now Hope briefly returns to her hometown to help her pregnant younger sister, Faith, escape, too. They need somewhere to go, a sanctuary. Where but The Birth Place? Faith can have her baby in safety and Hope can revisit old friends. Like Lydia - and the handsome Parker Reynolds.

But Parker, the birth center's administrator and a widowed single father, isn't pleased to see Hope back in Enchantment. He's even less pleased when Lydia offers her a job. Hope doesn't understand his animosity. In fact, she almost wonders if he has something to hide....

Brenda Novak

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s bestselling author career.

“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away,” Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.”

However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a creative bone in her body. In school, math and science were her best subjects, and when it came time to pick a major in college, she chose business.

Abandoning her academic scholarship to Brigham Young University at the age of 20 in order to get married and start a family, Brenda dabbled in commercial real estate, then became a loan officer.

“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book,” Brenda admits. “I learned how to write by reading what others have written. The best advice for any would-be author: read, read, read….”

Brenda sold her first book, and the rest is history. Now a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she continues to publish two or three novels a year, in a variety of genres.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are the proud parents of five children—three girls and two boys. Now that they are empty-nesters, she spends her free time babysitting her two grandchildren.

When she’s not with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising money for diabetes research. To date, she's raised almost $2.6 million. Her youngest son, Thad, has diabetes, and Brenda is determined to help him and others like him. She also enjoys traveling, watching sporting events and biking--she rides an amazing 20 miles every day!

I went into this book expecting a different theme because of how it was categorized on NetGalley, but I decided to give it a chance anyway. It turned out to be a very different read than I anticipated—emotional, a little heartbreaking, and at times difficult to process. The part about the main character giving birth without ever knowing her baby really stuck with me; it was tragic and set the tone for much of the story.

As the book progressed, I followed her journey back to the Sanctuary with her sister, and it was interesting to see how she tried to rebuild her life there, even finding a job. There were a lot of emotional layers to this story, and while I didn’t always agree with certain aspects—especially the polygamy element—I kept reading to see where it would go. By the end, I was relieved with how things turned out. It wasn’t quite the book I expected, but it still had some compelling moments that kept me engaged.

Le doy tres estrellas debido a que su final me pareció precipitado.
Pero debo decir que la trama de la historia me sorprendió gratamente.

Well now she did it again!

This is a rather cute romance. The characters were believable. Thank you for not leaving us hanging and finishing or answering all questions.

Well done.

“What was one more skeleton in an already crowded closet?”

17 and pregnant, Hope Tanner runs away from her home in Superior, Utah fleeing the polygamist community she was raised in. She finds herself in Enchantment, where she gives birth to her baby. She made the decision to put the baby up for adoption and was assured the baby would go through the adoption process and to a good family. Little did she know that the family her baby would end up with actually bought the child from her midwife, Lydia. 10 years later she returns to Superior to see her Momma and sisters, not expecting 18 year old Faith to ask her to meet under the protective shadow of night.

When a pregnant Faith decides to leave with her sister against her husband’s wishes, she can’t imagine the trouble it will end up bringing to her sister’s doorstep. Fleeing yet again to the safety of Enchantment, Hope finds herself back at the same birthing facility where she delivered her baby to seek prenatal care for her sister Faith. Back in the only place even close to being her home, Hope gets a job working for Lydia at the birthing place and begins to wonder if there is something more to the story of her baby’s adoption.

Parker Reynold’s has had to live with the guilt of what he did to Hope Tanner for 10 years. So when she shows up in Enchantment again he panics, afraid of what will come of her sudden visit. None too thrilled with her working so closely to him at the clinic, he gives her the cold shoulder until she breaks past his resolve. He knows getting involved with her is a bad idea, for the sake of his son Dalton, but he can’t help the attraction when he sees that she is grown up and no longer the 17 year old Runaway who delivered a baby 10 years ago. When he takes Hope home to her cabin to discover a broken window he starts to worry her past in Superior is catching up to her. From that night on, it becomes harder and harder to deny himself what he craves most: Hope.

Sanctuary will have you on the edge of your seat wondering who or what will pop up next in the story. Brenda Novak captured me from the beginning and she definitely delivered a satisfying end. If you have never read a Brenda Novak book I urge you to pick one up! Always gripping from page one and never a disappointment, she delivers story lines that will stay with you.

This book would have been better without the romance, if I'm being honest. It takes far too long to start up, and from there, it's all done in a handful of chapters. They literally go from barely getting along to professing love because Parker aided Hope in searching for her sister. To add to that, Parker spends the entire book lying to her. He repeatedly tells himself he's a bad person for stealing her child and continuing to lie to her, but he also does nothing to fix it until he basically has no choice at the end. He spends far too long being an asshole because he's frightened rather than coming clean.

If this book had focused more on Hope and Faith's relationship and issues, I think it would have been better and had more impact. Parker takes up too much of the story, and I couldn't ever bring myself to like or trust him. He makes no real move to mend his mistakes, but we're supposed to believe he's a good guy regardless... and if I didn't know he was lying with no intention of telling the truth, I might have believed that.

Hope forgives him far too easily, and without working through any sort of negative emotion. The book briefly states she's upset, but she's easily swayed away from her upset by her sister telling her Dalton had come clean when he didn't have to... except she was looking for her child, and it would have been a scandal of epic proportions if she found out. The birthing center would have been ruined, as would the congressman's career. Parker would likely have lost his son, as the adoption was illegal and invalid in the first place, and Dalton's life would have been thrown into complete disarray. Parker is, at the very least, trying to protect his illegally-adopted son by telling Hope, and so no, he doesn't have much of a choice. Coming clean is his best bet by the end of the novel, and since it comes after the I-love-yous, it feels manipulative. Also, I can't fathom lying to someone's face day in and day out with zero intention of telling them the truth yet wanting to build a future with someone. How long was he planning on lying?

(As for the polygamy church thing--they caved way too easily to make this story have a happy ending. I really can't believe no one called the damn cops and had some of these people arrested).

Sanctuary by Brenda Novak is a powerful, well-crafted romance that weaves together themes of love, redemption, and the dark side of polygamy. The story centers on Hope, a determined and resilient heroine, and Parker, a man with a secret so devastating it could shatter their growing connection. The way Novak reconciles the deep rift between them is nothing short of remarkable.

From the beginning, Parker’s behavior is both intriguing and frustrating. He’s clearly drawn to Hope, but his hostility and avoidance leave her—and the reader—questioning his true feelings and his past. The mystery surrounding the little girl Hope gave up for adoption only deepens the tension and emotional stakes.

The story also delves into the sinister side of polygamy, depicting it as a tool for abuse and control, much like the news stories we’ve all heard about the worst cases. The villain in this book is chillingly evil, and Novak doesn’t shy away from showing the harm such manipulative figures can cause in the name of faith. It’s a stark contrast to the more sanitized portrayals of polygamy seen in pop culture, making the story feel raw and authentic.

What truly shines is the strength of the characters. Hope and her sister Faith are admirable for their resilience and refusal to let their painful past define them. They embody hope and determination, seeking love and family despite their struggles. Even Parker and Lydia, who wrestle with guilt over their past choices, are deeply human and relatable.

The unique plot, emotional depth, and brisk pacing make Sanctuary a true page-turner. It’s a romance with heart, substance, and a compelling storyline that feels both fresh and grounded in real-life struggles. For readers who love a love story with layers of complexity and suspense, this one is a must-read. Thank you NetGalley for the ALC.

The whole time I was reading this book I kept saying to myself....wow this feels dated. Then I came to write my review and see that this is a re-release of Sanctuary which originally published in 2003. I am not sure what is going on in my brain recently, but I feel like I read the summaries of what books are about and they end up not really about that. Maybe is it wishful thinking?
I was expecting the book to focus on Hope's search and discovery of the child she gave up years prior to escaping her polygmous cult life, instead the main plot was how she helps her sister Faith escape her similar situation (17 and pregnant by her uncle/husband)-Gross.
Despite the uncomfortable situation, I am not a fan of cults, I thought Novak told a good story. Faith was incredibly naive (expected I guess). I would have really enjoyed more of the "tail end" of the book, without giving spoilers, but let's just say I wanted more of a ribbon and bow on Hope's story, to be flushed out. I was excited to be granted this Advanced Copy of Sanctuary, by Net Galley, I was not influenced or paid for this review, and I will for sure add her to my list of authors to read.

Hope and Faith are sisters from a polygamist community. Hope gave up her son (thinking the child was a girl) years ago. She gave birth at a clinic where the midwife cared a lot about her. When her pregnant sister needs her, Hope takes Faith back to the same clinic. The father of Faith’s baby is after the two of them. Hope gets a job at the clinic and gets to know Parker Reynolds as an adult instead of the eighteen year old she’d been when she first met him. Except Parker has a secret that could definitely affect how Hope feels about him.

Brenda Novak was just born to write stories! It didn’t matter that this book was older. This story pulled me in and didn’t let me go until the end. It completely tugged at my heartstrings!! The emotional aspect was deep and thought provoking. The writing was fantastic. The author did a great job with her research. The conflict had me at the edge of my ear buds. I highly recommend this audiobook! I thought the narrator did a great job of bringing this story to life! Sanctuary was provided by NetGalley and Harlequin audio for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A story that brings to light the practice of polygamy. Even though prohibited there are still remote areas in America that practice it. This is a story of Hope and how she escaped the cult as I would call it. She did pay a heavy price for her freedom and gave up her child at the age of 17 with hopes that the child would never be a victim of the brotherhood and will lead a good life. Now 10 years later she is at the point of her life that if she can she will save her sisters from that life if they so desire. Only Faith is brave enough to escape with Hope, she is heavy with child and it brings back memories that never left Hope for the child she had to give up for adoption. Threaten by Faith’s husband they hope to vanish to the place that took Hope in when she was pregnant. And maybe seeing the child she lost.
A very gripping story even though was written years ago there are still sects of polygamists today. The narrator was good, but Faith voice seemed way too young. I want to thank #NetGallery for this ARC. All opinions expressed are my own. #Sanctuary

Thank you Net Galley and Harlequin audio for the advanced copy of this audiobook being re-released this month. The main female character Hope Tanner escaped her polygamous community when she refuses to be wed to her uncle. After 10 years returns to the village to try to rescue /protect her younger sister. They return to Enchantment when she went 10 years prior to have her baby. A sad but well told story with two storylines running parallel - both storylines had holes but an overall good read. I enjoyed most of the narration but the younger sister’s voice was innocence to the extreme.

Sanctuary by Brenda Novak, narrated by Tanya Saari is the second book in this series. Can be read as a standalone. In the first book, Hope was pregnant and escaped from polygamy community in Utah. She gave her baby up at a place called The Birthplace. In this book she finds herself returning to the birthplace with her sister Faith who is about to give birth. There are secrets surrounding Hope’s baby. Can Hope keep Faith safe from her husband trying to get her back? Thank you to #Netgalley and #Harlequin Audio for this Arc. This is my honest review.

Hope unfortunately was brought up in a polygamous community in Utah. While a teen, she falls in love and gets pregnant by a man that she is not allowed to have. She runs away and gives her baby up for adoption. Fast forward, she returns to the area that she had run to all those years before.

I really enjoyed this audiobook!

Many thanks to Net Galley and Harlequin Audio for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thought provoking

I have read almost all of Brenda Novel's books and this was one I had missed. A wonderful story and deals with a lifestyle most of is have no experience with. The two story lines are separate, but so wound together that this story held you to the end.....just wish there had been one more chapter to Sent how Hope for her happy ever after

I love all of Brenda's books but this one had me on edge for awhile. It touched my heart in so many ways. Adoption, polygamy, abuse, troubled kids, I loved every page. As always my only drawback in every book is, I want to know what happens next lol. I'm dying to see what happens when they tell Dalton the big news, and hoping for a big future for all of them.

I usually give Novak books a 5 🌟 rating. This one would have been no different. Lovely story. Very hard to read at times because of the living situation of Hope and Faith. Polygamy is simply wrong. Controlling and beating women and children is wrong. I loved the ending. Great storytelling with the exception of one horrific scene. The kitty scene. I don't condone cruelty to animals. The story would have been much better without that scene and all the gory details. Hence, my 4 star rating.

Hope returns to The Birth Place with her pregnant sister. Things are suspicious when Lydia and Parker see Hope. Hope starts looking for her child while trying to protect her sister.

Hope stands up for her and her sister. They are both free of their old community.

You can never go wrong with a Brenda Novak book. Even after 10 years of leaving a polygamous cult, Hope is still trying to find her way in some areas. I do not want to give away anything, but i highly suggest you read the book.

Buscando su lugar, es el primer libro que leo de Brenda Novak. Honestamente me sorprendió la novela, sin embargo ese final demasiado precipitado fue el responsable de que le diera tres estrellas.
