Light Roast Larceny: A Coastal Coffee Mystery

Light Roast Larceny

A Cozy Mystery

Cici Larkin wasn't planning to become an amateur sleuth; she just wanted to figure out her next chapter after an unexpected layoff. Now, her days are filled with mystery novels, misadventures in cooking for her husband, and walks with her two tiny (but mighty) dogs under the Florida sun. She's built a strong community with the retirees surrounding her, and she's fiercely protective of her friends.

When a string of odd petty thefts starts rattling her coastal community, Cici can't help but get curious. Why would someone steal trinkets and items easily missed? It doesn't add up, and Cici's determined to find out why. With the help of a sharp-witted local police officer and fueled by iced coffee and intuition, Cici follows the trail of clues through her tight-knit neighborhood and sandy side streets. But the deeper she digs, the stranger (and more dangerous) the mystery becomes.

Can Cici and her new friend solve the case before things get out of hand? Or will their seaside sleuthing brew up more trouble than they bargained for?

Light Roast Larceny is a feel-good, sun-soaked cozy mystery full of friendship, caffeine, and charm. A perfect read for fans of quirky heroines, small-town secrets, and a touch of danger served with their daily brew.

My daughter gifted me an autographed copy of the book for Mother’s Day. I enjoyed reading it. There were times I couldn’t put it down because I was drawn in and wanted to know what happened next! The story is fun and quirky. A great summertime read.

Noisy neighbors. An impulsive main character. An lovely community. Several thefts to investigate. Many caotic moments. In general was a funny cozy mystery that made me relax. But I thought too much predictable to my taste.

Great characters and an intriguing plot combine for an absorbing tale of mystery and murder.

Light Roast Larceny is the first book in Kate Montgomery’s intriguing new Coastal Coffee Mystery series. With its likable and relatable characters and fascinating plot, I was completely absorbed by the story from start to finish and absolutely ready for book two.

The main character, Graciella “Cici” Larkin, is a recently laid-off twenty-something with two feisty little dogs and Brad, her very supportive husband, and living in a well-established Miami suburb of long-term older residents. When Francine, an elderly neighbor, has her wallet stolen and encounters disrespect and dismissal by local law enforcement, Cici steps in to advocate for serious action. While at the police station, she meets new employee and Louisiana bayou transplant, Officer Chandra Boudreaux, and the young women’s friendship quickly grows over their shared love of coffee and the delicious local breakfast pastries. They soon discover there’s been a rash of petty thefts occurring in Cici’s neighborhood over the previous couple of months, all targeting elderly residents who are treated in the same disappointing manner as Francine, and all dismissed with the pronouncement that they’ve just lost or forgotten where they’ve put their missing items.

I really enjoyed this story for its fun characters and plot revolving around the elderly victims. Cici is such a well-developed, relatable, and memorable character with her reactions to being suddenly laid off, dealing with her unpleasant, self-appointed neighborhood watchdog, Edna Sparks, and her daily struggle for inspiration and producing an edible meal for the dinner table each night. Brad is a joy as he lends his support to her joint investigation with her new energetic, go-getter friend, Chandra. All three are dedicated coffee and breakfast enthusiasts, and the descriptions of their various meals and ethnic pastries are mouthwatering and serve to introduce Chandra to a new love interest.

While elderly victims are not new in fiction, this story takes this theme further, with the wholesale gaslighting of the victims taking centerstage. Readers ‘of a certain age’ or those with close relationships with older individuals will easily relate to these victims’ treatment. This tactic literally angered me as I read, and I could relate to the characters’ frustration and humiliation. These vital, competent adults were, within seconds of the start of their interview, discredited and deemed unreliable and unworthy of further attention because of their perceived age.

The perpetrators are gradually revealed, and a key element of the case remained elusive until almost the very end. However, even after the final reveal, I had questions regarding the motive for the mostly petty thefts. There doesn’t seem to be much return on investment for the extensive setup, as according to the story itself, until Gerald, the values of the items involved were minor and many of sentimental value only. Still, the story was a page-turner; I had to find out how it would all turn out.

I recommend LIGHT ROAST LARCENY to cozy mystery fans, especially those with an affinity for coffee or those who enjoy stories featuring more mature characters.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from Reedsy Discovery.

I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a clean cozy mystery book. The main character is Cici who is married to her amazing husband Brad. Cici and Brad with their two dogs live in a community with retirees. When she is out one day she runs into a neighbor and they talk. Next thing she knows the neighbor has had something stolen. Since Cici doesn’t know what she is going to do since she was layed off from work she sets out to help her neighbor. Along the way Cici meets Chandra who is a police officer. They find out her neighbor isn’t the only one who was robbed a lot of elderly people have been robbed. Can Cici with the help of Chandra and other retirees find out who is behind everything? Can Cici stay out of harm’s way in the process? I loved how supportive of Cici that her husband Brad was. He was amazing to her. I was shocked when I found out who was involved in everything that happened. Despite bad things happening in this book I smiled so much because of Cici, Brad, and their adorable dogs. I can’t wait to see more of them as well as the other side characters. I want to say so much more but I don’t want to spoil anything. If you love cozy mysteries then I recommend this book.

This was such a cute story and rang true to what an community of older folks in Florida are like. Everyone knows everyone else and a younger couple who lives there now goes around making friends with them all. The one big issue I have is their dogs, not everyone loves yappy dogs. I wish there was just one character in the book who wasn't thrilled with their dogs besides the crochety neighbor Edna. You've got every type of person in the neighborhood, the baker, the cook, the older guy who helps everyone, the one who knows everyone and what's happening with them all. It was nice to learn about all of them.
My biggest question is - what is Florida sugar? Is it a specialty sugar made with citrus fruit so it has that flavor? I couldn't find out when I googled it and I haven't come across it in the 20 years I've lived here.
I enjoyed the mystery and the way everyone in the community came together to solve it with the police department. I would definitely read sequel to this.

Kate Montgomery's "Light Roast Larceny" is a delightful concoction that will warm the hearts of cozy mystery lovers. From the first page to the last, I found myself completely captivated by this light and engaging tale, devouring it as quickly as a perfectly brewed cup of coffee.

Montgomery excels in crafting a world filled with fun, well-developed, and thoroughly relatable characters.

"Light Roast Larceny" masterfully blends charm with a satisfyingly suspenseful plot. It’s this clever balance, coupled with its undeniable small-town heart, that makes the novel such an enjoyable and quick read.

If you're looking for a mystery that is both comforting and intriguing, a story that will leave you with a smile and a warm feeling, then "Light Roast Larceny" is the perfect pick. I enjoyed every single minute of it and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone in search of their next favorite cozy read.

This is a new author for me, and I thought it would be interesting when Hidden Gems offered the ARC. It is the story of Cici Larkin, who lives with her husband Brad in a close-knit community of mainly retirees in Florida. Since Cici has recently lost her job and is much younger than the other residents, she has some time on her hands and finds herself drawn into a recent crime spree in her neighborhood. When the thefts are reported, it seems that the police are not taking the reports seriously because most of the victims are older and forgetful.
As Cici works to help her neighbors, she meets and befriends a recent transplant, Officer Chandra Boudreaux. Working with Chandra and others, she begins to investigate the crimes in her area and becomes a target of some incidents herself. It is an enjoyable story with interesting characters that make the neighborhood come alive. I would be open to reading more by this author to see what else Cici might get into.

I was so honored to receive this as an ARC and enjoyed every minute of it. This was a really cute light mystery that is perfect for the person who wants a mystery but not the tension of a thriller. It is set in Southern Florida dealing with theft from elderly that ended up being greater than what they originally thought was a local neighborhood crimes.
I absolutely loved all the characters in this book with a touch of romance too and definitely the small town ( ok it really reminded me of the mobile home gated communities down there IYKYK) vibe where everyone knows everyones business. I highly recommend if you want a down to earth, cute no spice small town mystery set in the south! Perfect beach or porch read with a cup of sweet tea and your pups running around!

This book was so fun and enjoyable! For the beginning you get to know this adorable tight knit community with a significant portion being elderly. I love seeing all their different personalities and relationships and it just added so much more to the mystery! It was so fun watching our FMC and her husband diving into the mystery and eating up all the gossip and drama! I felt like I was right there with them and was completely invested! The banter and cliffhangers kept me grinning and constantly flipping the next page. I really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend! I can’t wait to read more from this author!

This story captured my attention from the very first page. I love the close-knit older community setting, as someone who works with the elderly, I just love their quirky and unique personalities and endless stories. The mystery kept me reading to find out what happens next. It's very well written, easy to follow, the characters are wonderful, and I love that the main character, although very helpful, wasn't portrayed as a typical hero who saves the day but left the big job to the professionals, which is refreshing to see.

Highly recommended to anyone looking for a lighter mystery, not heavy on blood, guts, and gore, with just the right amount of drama and humor to keep things interesting.

Light Roast Larceny brewed up the perfect blend of charm, suspense, and small-town heart!

From the very first chapter, I was completely smitten with Cici Larkin. Her fresh start in the idyllic coastal town felt like a warm hug, but things quickly took a twist when a mystery bubbled to the surface—along with her barista skills. Montgomery has such a knack for cozy world-building. The setting is dreamy (I could practically smell the sea breeze and fresh coffee), and the cast of characters is the perfect mix of quirky and lovable.

This isn’t just another cozy mystery—it’s packed with heart, humor, and just the right dose of caffeine-fueled sleuthing. I adored the themes of friendship, reinvention, and community that ran throughout. If you're a fan of Ellie Alexander or Cleo Coyle, this one should go straight to the top of your TBR.

Highly recommend with a side of your favorite latte ☕💛

I really enjoyed reading Light Roast Larceny. The characters are extremely well written, and the book is like getting to know new friends rather than just reading characters. The story was interesting, and I appreciated the author highlighting the dismissive treatment elderly people often receive instead of the support they need. I also really enjoyed the scenes focusing on good food and good coffee, and the bonding we do over them. I highly recommend this book for fans of cozy mysteries.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was such a cute, cozy mystery set in a close-knit community of mostly elderly folks. Cici, however, is much younger and lives in the neighborhood with her husband Brad and their two small dogs.

When a string of petty thefts begins to surface around the community, Cici’s curiosity is piqued. This doesn’t sit right with her, and she’s determined to get to the bottom of it.

Such good banter and likable characters in this delightful little mystery. I highly recommend this one if you are in the mood for a light, entertaining read with a good plot.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a great cozy mystery. It didn’t require a lot of deep thinking which let me get in to the shoes of the characters easily and follow along with the story. I love a good mystery, and anything involving cute dogs and humans who love on them is a win for me. It was easy to read throughout the day when I had downtime at work, but just as easy to pick up and read by the fire after work. I read this in just a couple days because I wanted to keep reading.

This book is a perfect, easy read! Suspenseful, but not scary. My teens loved reading it with me.

The descriptions of food throughout are fantastic. The way Montgomery describes details, even crumbs on tables make you feel like you're a part of the action.

Bravo, Ms. Montgomery!! Looking forward to your next book.

A lovely lighthearted mystery novel! I haven't read the other books in the series, but I was able to follow along just fine since there was perhaps just one mention of the previous story. Even if the characters were elderly it was honestly like reading about a bunch of teens. They were all lovely and made me want to be part of their community.

It was easy to get caught up in the fast pace of the action scenes while other times I enjoyed the leisure flow and laid back atmosphere, immersing myself in the beachy and comfy settings. The main character is funny and relatable! All the characters are favorable and have their own little charm! Even the mean ones! A good read for anyone who craving a good mystery!

Light Roast Larceny was a cute, cozy mystery with plenty of charm. I appreciated the coffee shop setting, and the light humor sprinkled throughout gave a small-town Hallmark vibe.

The characters were likable, especially the husband, and the little dogs followed Cici everywhere. A coffee shop with pastries and a mystery to solve with a new friend in the mix, who happened to be a police officer. Cozy Nancy Drew vibes....

I’d recommend it to fans of light-hearted mysteries.
