WAR by Jennifer Anne Davis was a thrilling conclusion that I absolutely adored. I loved this series since the first book, and was so pleased with the way it all ended. Some things didn't play out like I hoped they would, but that's to be expected with any good conclusion. But either way, I am so glad I read this series and got to know these wonderful characters.
The world-building was phenomenal, this book setting has quickly become one of my favorite genres to read. There's something about historical novels, set with evil kings and a civil war threatening to rise up and devour the evil ensnaring them, that always peaks my curiosity and gets my blood pumping. And this book was no exception too my new favorite genre, that satisfied in more ways then I hoped.
THE PLOT:
REMA:
Rema thought she finally had it all figured out. She thought by standing with her people as their new queen, she would be giving a fresh beginning for them all. She thought she had more time before her life flashed before her eyes, before she was on her way to the gallows, again.... But she was wrong, and now she will never know what would of been, because she is a prisoner on her way to Emperion to be executed only because of the Royal blood that runs through her veins. And their is nothing she can do about it, or is there....?
Rema will have to battle the unthinkable to defeat all the evil threatening to tearing her world apart. She has no idea how or even if she will be able to get out of her impending execution in Emperion. And if she walks on that, how she'll ever find the forces and power to defeat them all. But one thing is for certain, Rema is not the same girl who naively and unknowingly walked into this life. She's stronger, faster, and more determined then ever to bring them all down once and for all.
DARMIK:
Darmik has lost the woman he loves in more ways then one. She was not only his savior, but also the savior of the rebels that he now calls his own people. She was Greenwood Island's last hope of ever defeating his father, the King, and his evil brother, the crown Prince, and restoring the Kingdom to it's once glory before his father slaughtered the royal family, missing only the infant baby that is the true heir to the throne, and is also miles away on a ship to Emperion to wait out her execution. Darmik almost lost Rema once to the gallows, he won't lose her again, no matter the circumstance...
Darmik's only way of saving Rema is to venture beyond his borders to the Emperion kingdom, where Rema is on her way too. He will have to use his royal name to gain entry with his uncle, the Emperor, and beg for Rema to be returned too him. He will have to become the person he now despises, if he wants to save not only the women he madly loves, but also the strong queen that will save them all..
But Emperion proves to be more difficult then Darmik ever anticipated, and his Royal blood will not be enough to get him out of this ruse he's concocted. But even if he manages to save Rema from the Emperor, he still has to find a way to defeat his father, brother, and thousands of solders that they're sure to have manipulated into turning on him....
Their journey will be long and tedious, but they will all have to endure much if their going to save their queen under duress, and breathe fresh air back into their kingdom.
This book was EPIC, truly amazing!! I loved it so much for so many reasons! This heart-pounding adventure was just the conclusion my heart needed!! I'm just sad this series is over, but thrilled that their is a spin-off series about Rema and Darmik's daughter, which I already have a review copy of, WHOP!!
Overall, WAR was a great conclusion that I'm highly satisfied with. I'm excited to continue this series in the fresh eyes of the main characters daughter, and see what other struggles will arise in Emperion and Greenwood Island. I know whatever Davis creates is going to be anything but short of amazing! If you enjoy thrilling historical's, heart-pounding action and adventure, with war and rebellion, and an utterly beautiful romance that will stay with with you for a long time, then definitely check out this series, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

This was a very satisfying series. I had a lot of fun (and some frustration) reading it, and I can't wait to pick up the sequel series, Reign of Secrets! I have a feeling that one is going to be better than this one. Just a hunch. So anyways, onto the book!
My problems I had with there being no plot twists in the first book of this series slowly went away with the third book. We ended this one with two of the biggest plot twists ever, and I saw neither one of them coming. The author really decided to hit me one after the other with those huge plot twists, and then she just wrapped the book right up like nothing happened. I still feel a little shocked, so I'm not quite sure how I feel about that yet. But I can't complain that there were no plot twists because, oh my goodness, there sure were.
I do have to say that the parts that were from Rema's perspective were infinitely better than the parts from Darmik's. One of the reasons for this was that while reading his narrative, it always felt like something was just about to go terribly wrong, and at the exact moment when they thought that everything was fine. Because of that, it was kind of stressful to read his perspective. On the other hand, while reading Rema's narrative, I felt hopeful, like even though things were bad right that second for her (and they were, like all the time), then things were about to improve, or she was going to figure a way out of her predicament. I'm not sure if that makes perfect sense, but that's just the vibes I was getting from the differing perspectives. Additionally, Darmik was worrying about Rema way too much in my opinion. She was perfectly capable of handling herself, and had done so multiple times, so it was slightly annoying to constantly hear Darmik trying to figure out how he was going to save her. Because she didn't need saving. She could do that herself.
Another problem I had with book 1, that Rema was kind of weak, was also partially solved in this third book. She definitely became stronger as the series progressed, and I really liked that aspect of it. However, I preferred Rema when she was a prisoner over when she was a queen. I realize that she was always a queen, but I just liked her personality better when she wasn't acting like one.
Nathenek was a great addition to the series, and I wish we had seen more of him. I realized where his loyalties lay from the beginning, and despite his questionable profession, he was truly a good person at heart.
The one negative from book 1 that remained constant throughout the series was the black and white aspects of all the characters. Very few characters (like 1) were morally grey, had questionable motives, or did both good and bad things. Essentially, they were all portrayed as either good or evil, and I would have appreciated a little divergence from that trend.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this series, and the character development improved greatly over the course of this trilogy (with the exception of Darmik, who had basically no personality other than being a good fighter and loving Rema). I realize that it sounds like I don't like Darmik, and it's not exactly that, because he did have his good points. It's just that, overall, he felt kind of bland to me, and a little more diversity in his personality would have been quite welcome.

“Disappointed” is too strong a word, so we’ll just say it wasn’t what I hoped. I enjoyed The Key, adored Яed, so I was hoping to be blown away by War, but I felt like the series kind of devolved. I am glad I read it for no other reason than I am happy to know how things turned out for my favorite characters. However, I think this may have missed a round of editing.
The plot:
I definitely think this book should have been about 100 pages longer. Things just felt too rushed, too quick, and it seemed like there were scenes missing. For one, defeating the three main villains felt far too easy. I’m not saying there should have been a grand scale battle that dragged on for chapters, but it was sort of like—smash, BOOM—ta-da! bad guys are dead.
I would have also liked to see a bit (a lot) more of the distrust and struggles in getting Darmik’s men, the rebels, and the Emperion soldiers to work together. It was only addressed in a few scenes and briefly and there was so much potential for conflict that was never utilized.
I admit I didn’t see the twist about Hamen’s illegitimate heir coming and that was handled well, but there were a lot of other twists that I didn’t think were properly foreshadowed/handled (i.e. Phallek’s dagger).
There were several deaths I know I was supposed to be sad about, but I really wasn’t because I never liked those characters in the first place. Yeah, I felt bad when my favorite characters were upset and maybe I should have been more empathetic, but I’m still mad at
The ending felt anticlimatic. I felt like there was still a lot unresolved about Emperion and Greenwood and how that was all going to work out. To me, this whole book felt like the bones of a story without the fat and meat to make it come to life.
The characters:
I still love Darmik and Rema to bits. It’ take more than one book to change that. Though I wanted Darmik to be more human/flawed. He has moments where he gets angry over petty things, mainly Savenek’s attention to Rema, but I wish there had been more dimension to his faults in this one.
Where I took the largest issue character-wise with Nathanek/Captain. I have decided I like him, but he just seemed way too forthcoming and open for his profession. In the first 20% of the book, he basically tells Rema—an enemy prisoner—his entire backstory or a good chunk of it. And it wasn’t even really pertinent to the plot. I like my assassins terse and scary and I think it would have been possible to humanize him without the soul-baring.
Don’t let the scathing fool you, I still enjoyed parts of this book. There were a few places were I squeed and grinned and even laughed. It could be that I just hate endings. I might have read this when I was in the wrong mood. Nonetheless, I still recommend the first two books in this series without hesitation. If you like them, well, then you’ll have to read this one.

WOW! What a fantastic end to an amazing series. It is so hard to write this without giving away any spoilers but I will say this ... There isn't a cliffhanger this time lol.
Seriously this series is so well thought out that really it couldn't end any other way but the ride is definitely neither a smooth or predictable one. I have to say that although I moaned continuously that I needed all the answers, now I have them I am a little sad the story is over.
My advice for anyone that can is to grab the whole series then lock yourself away where you won't be disturbed and devour the trilogy one after another. As a bonus the first book is free (The Key) so you REALLY have nothing to lose!! Trust me you won't regret it!

That epilogue. ^_^
I really really love the series. I truly do. Yet I felt that the author lost some of her ability to write amazing descriptions and just left us with "this...then...that" moments. Even realistic-ness was lost .
If this book was longer and entangled itself around a few descriptions, longer battles, more proof of the heroine's ability to stand her ground, and even more proof of Darmik's reputation, then I would have fallen head over heals for this book.

I am not sure whether I should shed a tear or jump up and down for joy, but this book is the final piece of the True Reign series. All I have to say is 'What a way to go!'
Ever since The Key, I have been so enamored with these characters and with the adventure the author has taken us on. When it came time to read the final novel, Jennifer Anne Davis simply did not disappoint. All of the pieces to the puzzle came together in an action-packed, thrilling, and emotional way. I have to admit that I even shed a tear (or twelve) toward the end.
While Rema and Darmik's novels are complete, their story is one that will stay with me for a long time.

An overall really enjoyable read, but also not a super strongly written conclusion book on some parts, as I felt was the case with the previous series I've read by this author as well.
Especially towards the end, all things felt a bit rushed and wrapped up too quickly again, which I thought was quite a shame, seeing how much I've enjoyed this story from the beginning and I think it deserved a bit 'more'.
But okay, despite those remark, there was a looot to enjoy as well and I definitely am planning to read more by this author in the future.
The characters in these books are so frigging loveable and precious. I love the romance, the action and adventure as well as the political elements. The author's writing is always engaging and makes me want to continue reading non-stop.
Looking back on this trilogy in its whole, I would definitely recommend picking it up. I can't wait to add some printed copies to my shelf some day and to read the spin-off. This is a world I can continue to lose myself in over and over again. Perfect books to pick up anytime when I want a quick, engaging and entertaining read that has is all; great characters, action, politcs and a swirl of romance!

If I had to use one word to describe this conclusion to the trilogy I'd use the word rushed. It felt really rushed. Plot wise it was great but it was so rushed.
Plot:

I think if another 100 pages was added or if perhaps the balance was better this book wouldn't have felt so rushed. There are chapters in this book that drag on for no good reason and they become almost boring and there are chapters that should've gotten way more time and attention because of important parts in the story and they were over in three pages. I truly enjoyed this trilogy but this last installment lacked a little for me.

Jennifer Anne Davis is a great author. She keeps her books fast paced and you just want to keep reading to see what happens next.

Thoroughly enjoyed this entire series! Yeah, yeah... I was totally *#$sed at the way the first book ended and not particularly happy with the way the second book ended - BUT, once I purchased all three books and just settled in for the ride, it was a fabulous one! The only drawback in this last installment was it could have used more depth in the characters. It seemed there was so much action and things to get accomplished in order to finish the series, we didn't get quite the amount of real understanding of characters. I am especially intrigued with Nathanek/Captain. Now there's a character that needs his own story!!
Overall, this is a series I would highly recommend for anyone, young or old, looking for a great clean (sweet) yet dark and sometimes gritty fantasy with a bit of romance added in for yumminess! IF they know they will have to purchase all three books in order to get that story. :) And, even after three, it ended happy!!

Such a great ending to an amazing series!! I absolutely adored and loved everything about these books! The storyline was great to follow and made me want to keep on reading, the characters were all well developed and easy to care about. Rema was such a fun and fiesty character and I enjoyed reading about her. I would suggest this series to anyone that loves a good fantasy series and is interested in kingdoms, Prince and princesses and a good storyline. If you're a fan of An Ember in the Ashes you will most likely enjoy this series as well!

So, Rema was captured by the Emperion assassin and taken to the Emperor for execution. During the two week boat ride, the assassin decides to train Rema. I thought perhaps it would be so that she could escape, but no, he turns her over to the Emperor anyway. Meanwhile Darmik, Savenek and friends are trying to catch up. When they arrive in Emperion, they are thrown in jail and tortured before escaping
Everything seemed very anticlimactic to me, certainly not the "heart-pounding conclusion" I was promised. The prior 2 books did a good job of building up to the confrontation with the Emperor - he was supposed to be even eviler than Barjon - but when the confrontation arrived, it was over very quickly with a lot less drama than I expected. Ok fine, then the real battle is going to be between Barjon and Lennek then, right? Yeah, sort of. While I appreciated that the plot did not end in the way I predicted (I anticipated a big battle scene), it lacked the drama I think was intended and was as rushed as the scene with the Emperor. It just left me disappointed. I put the book down thinking, "well, that could have been better".

I read Cage of Deceit by this author first and loved it!~~ but that book actually comes after The Key, Red and War. Wonderful series!! I also loved Cage of Deceit. You can read the two series out of order, but it would draw more parallels if you read them in order!!

This was an amazing series for me. When we last leave Rema in book 2 she is kidnapped by the assassin and so the beginning of this book covers her taken across the ocean to Emperian for execution. What is funny is not only will she continue for looking for means to escape but in addition she is thrilled to finally be able to travel and explore new places. This throws her captor for a loop because he expects she would be fearful or sobbing instead she is smiling and in awe.
Darmik has teamed up with Savenek, Neco, Ellie, Vesha to set a plan in motion for a rescue. Darmik thinks if he can convince his uncle that Rema and him are engaged and she is not the rightful empress that he can save her. Nothing is ever as easy as one thinks and so most of the team has to put their complete trust into Darmik in order to get their sovereign freed. Here is where a twist of sorts is thrown in an things move very fast in a race to make it known that Rema is the Empress of Emperion and Greenwood Island.
Things are not yet done though because this was my favorite part of the book because now it has finally became time for King Barjon and Lennek to meet their fate. It's still not cut and dry though because the king and Lennek have control over his army which double in numbers to the rebel army. Darmik never thought it possible that the army would turn on him but Lennek has devised a plan that makes it impossible for the army to refuse. Savenek is still struggling with his own feelings that he feels for Rema. I really felt bad for what he was going through but then I remembered he had delivered a similar speech to Vesha in book 2. What comes next is a hand to hand combat that doesn't turn out as they would like and some greats are lost.
Finally it comes down to where it all began. It was like stepping back to the prologue. Another twist is revealed that I kind of suspected half way through the book but unlike I first thought it is not Lennek who does the king in. Sweet revenge comes to pass but not without a price. The ending is a happy one with much hope for the characters but unfortunately not all got to live to see it. I was so heartbroken at the authors decision in who lived and died even though their sacrifice made it possible for the queen to take her place. The moment she takes her place and all bow in honor and respect sent chills down my spine. From the brutal murder of the royal family to the suffering of the kingdom as a direct result they all bowed knowing that she was going to bring new life into Emperion and Greenwood Island. I'm curious to see what is next as a spin off there are plenty of possibilities.
I think if I had one complaint it would be that although I can appreciate the author wanting to keep her book clean it felt as though she tried too hard to keep the H/h apart. Every time they had a chance to be alone someone would interrupt. I think she could have been a little more creative and still kept it clean as she wanted. I still loved the series overall.

Nice conclusion
overall it was good. Nice ending to the other 2 books. unlike the other readers, once I found out they were going back to Emporim, I kind of figured this for the ending, even guessed correctly the assassins moves. overall, book 2 & 3 were not worth the almost $10 price tag tho. Again, don't get me wrong, it's a good story and I loved the characters but in this tight race and abundance of authors and books to choose from; I would have rather spread my money around more, thus gaining myself more reading material. and let's be real, there are excellent authors out there and more to the point...known and popular authors who don't charge ~ $5 for a book. however if you have the money and you like book 1 (which you will) then go for it. I think if she dropped the price to $2.99 each for #2 & #3 then she would have more people continue on after #1. you can tell by the # of reviews (or the lack there of) that less than half are continuing on in the trilogy. note to the author: the other thing that bugged me in this book was when they go back home they constantly reference how it seems the enemy knows where they are or will be next, over and over, like there was a traitor but nothing ever came of that. what's with that? weird! the same holds true with this book as the other two: 300+ pages and edited well, good for older teens, young adults and adults.

I just got annoyed with the main character. Honestly, she should be dead. And unlike pretty much every other character in this genre, she had nothing to do with it. Seriously. Everything just fell into her lap. She needs an army? Oh good, the guy sent to kill her is actually in her side and totally willing to give her his nation's throne and army. Wants to marry a prince? No problem. He has inexplicably not been able to get her out of his head, and trusts her one hundred percent. Did I mention she goes from Queen to Empress in less than a week without so much as lifting a finger? I guess I'm just upset because I liked the cheesiness until now.

I loved it!! What a fantastic read.
The whole series is very well thought and it wrapped up quite well.
Totally recommended for when you're in the mood for some medieval adventure!!

Most battles are won by those who understand their enemy. I’ve always found one only has to look to the arts. Sculptures, books, paintings. They reveal the true identity of a culture. If you understand that, then you know your enemy. You can find their weakness and attack.
Rema was taken by Captain at the end of the second book. Darmik and several others are traveling to Emperion to save her. Darmik is the only one who has ever been to Emperion and his experience was nothing short of a nightmare. We start to get some flashbacks to his training. The Emperion army is ruthless and has a one-mind strategy, WAR.
We also get flashbacks of Darmik growing up and his father treating him horribly. We also got a look into the brothers and how Darmik became the best to prove to his dad he was worthy but Lennek being a whiny brat would say Darmik cheated just to have him whipped by his father.
Let me tell you that this book surprised me in many ways. By the way, I love Rema in this book. She was finally the person who I thought she could be though on the boat she acted weird. The other two books seemed to drag a bit. This one though I felt went by super fast. I love how fast-paced it was, and the character growth. I am shocked at how much I loved this book considering the nightmares the first book gave me.
There is a spin-off series that follows twenty years after this book. I have had it on my TBR before this book without knowing it was a spin-off. I’m not going to jump into it right away. I need to read something fuzzy and warm.

Awesome conclusion to one amazing series. I was sad to reach the end and shed a couple tears throughout but overall I loved how it all wrapped up. Rema & Darmik became one of my favorite couples & I'll miss them. 4.5 Stars!

I really enjoyed this series overall but I wish it was a bit longer. It almost felt rushed. It had the potential to be one of those seriously epic, meaty fantasy books, but in the end it was only a trilogy and each book was quite short (under 400 pages). I almost felt like I got through it too quickly. I would have liked to spend more time in the series!

My least favorite of this series. It was so rushed. halfway through there was, what I would consider, a MAJOR moment, but it was glossed over and blown through so quickly that you’d think it was insignificant.
Her first execution was more detailed, and this should have been the same. Just disappointed, wanted more

Young Adult fantasy with a royal setting. This series was everything I love in a great story! And because I'm the kind of girl that best loves happily-ever-after stories, the ending was perfect for me. I instantly fell in love with Rema and Darmik from book one and even through the adversity and trials that separated them, I continued to root for them and their close friends: Neco, Ellie, Vesha, Audek and even Savenek. This story had me tearing up at several occasions, so it's not all happiness and rainbows. After all, the title is War.
Along with the first two books, this story continues with being told by alternating POV's of Rema and Darmik, The end of this series is about battling those in power who are evil and finally releasing the kingdom from the oppression of the wicked. Lives are lost along the way. In the end though, the bravery and loyalty of those who pledge their lives to Rema are the heroes of the story.
Seriously ya'll, if you haven't checked out this series yet, it's a MUST read! Go, grab it up now!

I enjoyed this series but couldn't give this book as many stars as the first two books. *May contain spoilers*
Yes, we all knew that this book would end happily with Rema and Darmik together. It was good to see a heroine who knew what she wanted and followed her heart, but I think I would have liked things better if there had been some kind of romantic tension between her and Savenek or even Nathenek. Several scenes in the book when she was at the rebel compound led me to believe that even though she wasn't overly physically attracted to Savenek, she was nonetheless attracted to him. She was full of feelings of betrayal and hurt over Darmik, and I think a little romantic tension would have added more to the story.
I thought the time spent in Emperion, and especially the death of the Emperor, was rushed and too convenient. Vesha and Ellie, two females who Darmik was SO worried about being unable to handle interrogation, we tortured but magically overcame it and never spoke of it again. The emperor was quickly killed and never spoken of again. Next thing we know, Rema is on a ship back to Greenwood Island. Too convenient and rushed for my tastes.
The ending also seemed rushed and somewhat immature. Ellie rushing into a room out of breath because visitors have arrived for the coronation and to perform a marriage ceremony. The emotion seemed too extreme and put-on after everything they'd just been through.
Despite all of these "flaws" which are my personal opinion, I am thrilled to have found a new author who can write so well! It is certainly rare these days and I am looking forward to what's next to come, perhaps a spin-off?

Amateur and unoriginal
I really wanted to like this series and kept pushing on hoping for something unexpected or satisfying to happen, something special. It never surprised or delighted me. I should have listened when another reviewer had called these characters, "cardboard"--it couldn't be more infuriatingly true. There is no complexity to any character. The story is horribly unoriginal, ripping from Sleeping Beauty and every cliched YA story where the heroine goes through "training", finds a fun and devoted group of friends in a high school setting, has multiple love interests as one does in high school, goes on to fight some epic battle like Joan of Arc. Oh god and of course, the story ends (is this really even a spoiler?) with her having a baby with the perfect man--but don't worry, they waited to have sex until they were married. Puke. Everything turns out as expected. I feel badly to give such a negative review but this is pretty bad and I feel like I wasted hours reading and wasted my money.

This series has been such an enjoyable adventure. Jennifer Anne Davis just got added to my favorite authors list. The dynamics of the kingdoms that she has created are well thought out with an eye to detail that makes you forget you are in an invented world. I found myself once again deeply involved with the characters and the storyline. The romantic involvement of the hero and heroine is kept clean and yet seems to keep the reader more emotionally involved. While I don't mind sex in a romance story, I found this refreshing after some of the reads with more sex than plot. The brutality of the fighting, the loves and losses involved in a war, the strength of character, courage and evil were all done with a master's brush leaving me feeling as though I was reading a true history rather than an invented kingdom.

I loved it. I love how everything turned out. I love how the ending showed how everything was turning out with all the different characters after all was said and done. The ending was a little.... quick. But who I wanted to die, died. And who I wanted to kill them, killed them. That's my kinda ending :) One death was neither what I expected or wanted.... But was done in a honorable, noble way.
The ONLY thing about this series that I didn't like, was how the characters always thought the same thoughts over and over and over. I'm like here we go! She's thinking again haha.
I am so sad to end this series. And just as I was about to curl up in a ball and cry.... I found out there is a spinoff series!! Now my life has purpose again and I'll go buy the book and read it in six hours instead of sleep ♡
