In This Void

Rate this book
After quitting his soul-sucking job to play music around the U.S. while living in an old postal van, troubled singer and guitarist Kody Logan gets the opportunity of a lifetime: a recording session in Nashville with a legendary producer. Seeing this as his sole chance to escape an endless cycle of dive-bar gigs, hollow hookups, and self-loathing, Kody puts every penny he has on the line to make it happen.

En route to Music City, he joins forces with Dane, a charismatic violinist whose effortless talent, life-affirming outlook, and magnetic presence soon stir a crippling mixture of jealousy and resentment in the misanthropic songwriter. As Kody’s bitterness toward Dane swells to a breaking point, the stage suddenly seems too small for both musicians.

"A lyrical live-in journey that slams the reader in the back of the tour bus, hollers at 'em to carry the amp, and makes no apologies for THE behind the curtain tour. This dip into musical madness is a wild ride."
-Ashley Erwin, author of Grit Black Blood

"Alex Rasmussen delivers a raw and lyrical tale of desperate men and women. Part Nashville, part Easy Rider, In This Void is exhilarating honkytonk noir."
-Sam Wiebe, award-winning author of The Last Exile

Alex Rasmussen

Seattle-based novelist, poet, and songwriter Alex Rasmussen has spent more than a decade strumming his acoustic guitar and singing on various stages and sidewalks across the US.

In his mid-twenties, Alex (now 38) took several road trips to San Francisco, funded with money made while busking in the subway tunnels and on the streets of that storied city. These trips inspired Alex’s self-published novel, Coloring outside the Lines (2016), which he began selling out of an antique suitcase while performing around his water-logged hometown.

Eventually, the road’s siren song grew too seductive, and Alex bought an old postal van and built a bed in the back. Leaning into a nomadic lifestyle, he started gigging across the country while working any odd-job he could find (construction, pedi-cabbing, selling goods for farmer’s-market merchants, etc.).

Adventures in Nashville, Austin, Sedona, New Mexico, and the MIdwest—as well as long hours of quiet, which allowed for intense introspection—inspired a collection of poems, Inside out, which Alex self-published in 2019.

After two more years of itchy feet—and an LA recording session with Grammy-winning producer, Sheldon Gomberg (Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams)—Alex faced health complications in late 2021 and hunkered down in Seattle to heal.

This forced domestication turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as not only did Alex team up with local publisher Common Meter Press for the release of an anthology, Becoming Visible (2024), featuring twelve PNW poets, but he also released his second novel, In This Void, with Seattle-based Chin Music Press in June of 2025.

Music, videos, blogs, and more can be found on his website (wordsandmusicbyalex.com).

Gripping, chilling, surprising, inspiring… all the feels with this one. I’d say an easy read, but some was far from easy to read… Just couldn’t put it down!

This novel showcases Rasmussen’s grounded and empathetic worldview. Each scene and turn of phrase a necessary and essential piece with its own place and purpose. The reading experience is smooth, transitioning seamlessly back and forth between the two leads. From my view, they could be interpreted as two faces of the same man. The dynamics between the characters are organic and raw, a refreshing look into true-to-life people navigating the messy realities of living. Getting to know the characters comes easily enough, but with no loss of nuance. Plot wise, the story boldly ventures forward with timing that is all too familiar, the natural stops and starts of worldly struggles. Overall I would call this novel ‘honest’. A must read for anyone who’s striven forward carrying the weight of their past, because of and despite.

In This Void takes you on a dreamer's journey of two distinct main characters, one carrying deep darkness and one full of light. The supporting characters are intriguing, and have you hoping they'll turn up in a future series. Written in a compelling alternating storyline style, this novel snakes through the plot via some unexpected twists and shocking turns. Though, like an Ouroboros, it brings you full circle, as things come together in the end.

Brilliantly written—vivid, raw, and deeply moving. His characters feel profoundly human, and his pacing keeps the tension alive. Both gripping and thought-provoking, I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend!
