A light, sweet reading.

A single father who works as a chef in a shop, and the orphaned guy who changes boyfriends more often than clothes. The art is beautiful, and the interactions are so very adorable. Romance comes before sex!

(Obviously, I read a scanlation of this. Edit: Just saw that the English translation is going to be out in September - consider it preordered.)
Absolutely lovely - I have a big weakness for this kind of story. A single father ends up having to accept the help of an acquaintance of his. That acquaintance is gay and kind of in love with him and in the end, well, guess what happens. It reminded me of a SGA fanfic in that the "normal order" is reversed: rather than falling in love, getting married and then having a kid it's the other way around. Supercute and romantic; I really loved this.

Love it! So sweet and tender with fully devloped characters. My favorite kind of Yaoi where the relationship is the most important thing. Highly recommended!!

Does anyone else know why this manga is impossible to find in physical copy? Or that if you do find it, it’s being sold for $70+! Thank goodness for friends and the internet.

This was a super cute manga! I could have definitely done without these weird long moments or the confusion of the characters. Also the text bubbles were confusing at times and didn’t really show who was talking.

I, personally, loved Only Serious About You vol.1 and 2. This is obvious by my 5 stars. It really is the sweetest story. I don't care it is made up of old cliche's. They exist because they work. Besides, a lot of yaoi manga has rape scenes in them and this one doesn't which is wonderful as far as I am concerned. Rape is a bit of a no-no with me. Odd, maybe, but there it is.
To sum up my next to nothing review: read the books, they are adorable and sweet.

I really enjoyed this first volume! It was cute and for me it was the first time reading about a single father. I was hooked right away and I highly recommend it.

This book is nicely crafted. It was on a list of yaoi/shounen-ai that had children in the story and it definitely hit its mark. I think the worries of being a single parent are well-placed throughout the story and it introduces new readers to the world of manga and/or Queer comic literature.

Pretty cute. Single father struggles taking care of his sick daughter alone and receives help from a customer. In the process, they get closer.

This wasn’t the most entertaining stuff, but it’s not bad by any means.

Super cute & full of fluff. It is kinda light and not much happen, more on the “slice of life” romance vibe.

Oosawa is a divorce single father working at a restaurant. Yoshioka is a recurring customer and also a playboy that is unable to keep a lover for a long period of time. The young father accepts his help when his daughter falls sick and is alone to deal with the situation. He doesn’t want to rely on others.
Yoshioka is a good guy and seems to have a way with children.

Conflict arrive when Oosawa ex-wife is getting married again and wants Chizu, her daughter, to come live with her, even if she abandoned her in the past.

There is nothing super special about this manga, but it is a nice easy read and I am curious to see the romance develop in future volume.

A very sweet story. And even though I am not really into lighter stories, I liked this one, since it discussed serious topics, without being overly dramatic.

The Story

Nao is a divorced father that works on a nice and friendly restaurant. He’s friends with all the team and loves what he does. Unless he is obliged to serve this weird client named Yoshi.

Yoshi is a salaryman that goes to Nao’s restaurant practically every day, as he lives nearby. He makes no secret of his attraction towards Nao, even knowing that Nao is heterosexual. On every visit, Yoshi does his best to be noticed by Nao as more than a regular costumer.

All was well until Nao’s daughter, Chizu, falls sick and Nao’s only chance at healing his daughter properly is to accept Yoshi’s offer and stay at his place for some days. Nao doesn’t want to be a burden, but his daughter’s well-being comes in first place, making him move in with Yoshi.

And this was just the opportunity that Yoshi needed to seduce Nao.

The Analysis
Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader :)

This series was a rollercoaster. In a good way, but I was always left a mess, haha! I loved Nao since page one and I wanted him happy. As for Yoshi, the guy is perfect even on his flaws. He captured my heart and never faltered on his resolutions to conquer Nao’s affections, but never in a forceful way. Honestly, this series was so real and boys next door that I wanted to hug my e-reader <3 It has only two volumes and it is a proud five stars one :D

The narrative pace was steady, as we witness Nao and Chizu’s daily routine until she falls sick. Yoshi was always there, telling all about his life to Nao – you know, amorous style – and trying to pick him up, but on a fun and cool way. The perspective is mainly from Nao’s point of view, but we have some Chizu, Yoshi and Nao’s boss povs too.

The plot was simply, but very complex on the human level. I mean, Nao’s life is very difficult and he barely has the money to spare. He and Chizu are happy, but Nao wanted to spend more time with his daughter, just like Chizu would love to play more with her papa. Nao has a glimpse of he could have when he is forced to move in with Yoshi and this leaves him confused: Yoshi lives in the front of the restaurant and only a few blocks away from Chizu’s daycare. And, as a salaryman, he leaves work in time to get Chizu on daycare and stay home with her, eliminating the nighttime daycare that Nao also had to afford. He finally has the time for his daughter, but also has to defend himself against Yoshi’s disturbing perfection, as he still is a man and Nao is still heterosexual. So simple and so complex.

The characters definitely were the strongest point on this title, along with the art. Nao and Yoshi were so well developed that I fell in love with both of them, haha! (I usually pick a favorite male on my gay couples.) There was no insta-love, not even on Yoshi’s part, as he first was attracted to Nao and came to love him from their daily acquaintanceship. Nao was the typical hardworking guy, too focused on his career and family and bills to think about love. Yoshi also was a hardworking guy, but way far from typical, with an unique past and way of handling his feelings. Chizu was the most adorable child in the world and that makes me think that the insta-love on this series is on her part with Yoshi. From day one, Chizu and Yoshi fall in love with each other and become daughter and stepfather. The only one that didn’t see it coming was Nao, haha!

A good point on this series is that, despite the dramatic main theme, both Nao and Yoshi are super funny. They pick on each other all the time and make the reader laugh out loud well, at least this particular reader.

And, as we are on this subject, we totally have to talk about this manga’s art work. Asou-sensei has one of the most beautiful traces that I ever seen, without being too perfect bordering pain and without being common either. I need some posters of this series on my bedroom now.

Overall, if you love daily life mangas, drama, funny and beautiful males trying to have a family together and perfect art, just read Only Serious About You <3

That’s it, thank you for reading!

This isn't a real review, just a personal reflection after reading it.
A personal reflection filled with a lot of angst; that's not the fault of the book itself per se.
(Or maybe it is? IDK.)

I saw this on a list of MLM manga that had consent. I think whoever made the list just kind of things what defines consent differently than I do.

It's not that it wasn't consensual, it's just that there was a lot of teasing by one character in a hitting-on way that clearly made the other character uncomfortable and he just kept doing it. They ended up together and had feelings for each other by the end but like... I just feel so tired the stories of queer love that are marketed to an audience who isn't, who specifically do it because these stories are a voyeur-esque experience, and not something they see themselves in. Even when something is filled with domestic fluff... I just feel off about it, I guess. I can't see myself being at ease.

Consent isn't solely about sex. It's about making sure someone else is comfortable with your advances and actually wants that.

Maybe this is just my own trauma impacting how I feel about this stuff. I think it's hard for me to navigate my expectations around this without comparing it to my experiences as a survivor. My rapist coerced me and it was an ongoing relationship where I was made to feel guilty or bad for saying no. There were times I wasn't actually asked and there was never a point where I said to him, "hey, you don't have to ask, this is always okay with me unless I say no" which happens sometimes in relationships I've had since. (But only with my partners, I don't think I've been able to say that. I always need to be asked. About hugs, etc.) If someone hits on me and I make it clear I don't want that or I'm uncomfortable, and they don't immediately say "sorry, let me know what's ok and what's not so I know for the future" or something along those lines, it reflects on how I feel about things down the line. (And having that first convo of consent really helps advance a relationship too. Like saying to a flirting friend, "this isn't okay, but this other thing is" etc., veering into talking about other boundaries & comfort zones + desires for other stuff, etc.)

I can't feel able to say yes in a relationship where saying no is not going to be respected for the smaller things as much as the big things.

I don't know how to navigate how I feel about this story vs. what's reasonable to feel. Or if there's a difference.

This story would fall under the theme "gay for you" that occurs in m/m manga and fiction all the time. The idea that a man isn't gay but falls for one single man. In my personal opinion, I don't think this is true, I believe this is more a case of bisexuality than the idea that a straight man can be gay for only one specific man.

Nao is one of these types of men. He's a single father who is attracted to women and finds all aspects of the gay lifestyle that he's been exposed to confusing and something that isn't for him. However, Yoshi - a businessman who's is a regular customer where Nao works - is constantly hitting on him and trying to get him to agree to a date.

I'm a fan of Kai-sensei's works, but with this story I found myself constantly going back and forth between not liking it to liking it. Did I find Nao's daughter Chizu cute and sweetly childlike? Yes. Did I question whether Nao was really falling for Yoshi or that he was just so strung out that he didn't want to lose the one person who was - for the first time - supporting him rather then the other way around? Yes. Did I find Yoshi's interest in Nao confusing because he'd be after him one second and hitting on another guy right in front of him the next? Yes. Did I find Nao's exceptance of his relationship with Yoshi to be too fast and too easy? Yes. Did I question the right choice of moving in together before they've even dated when a child was involved? Yes.

There's a lot of issues with this story that I think might make some love it and others dislike it and then the rest, like me, stuck in the middle. In the end, the artwork is lovely, Chizu is adorable, and the story will certainly get you thinking.

Now, take that premise and add a child to the mix. The straight man is divorced and raising his daughter alone. His daughter gets sick and the gay man ends up helping them.
One the best yaoi I’ve read along those lines is Sorenari ni Shinken Nandesu (I’m Serious in My Own Way or Only Serious About You), story and art by Asou Kai. Listed as a slice of life, this touching yaoi has truly heart-rending scenes. Anyone who has gone through a rough divorce and raised a child on his or her own will sympathize. I give kudos to the author’s depiction of the single father, Oosawa, who only wants the best for his daughter Chizu, and gay man, Yoshioka, who remains a respectfully patient but loving pillar of strength.

BCB:
Yoshioka is a regular at Oosawa's restaurant, and always seems to be bringing in yet another boyfriend to enjoy Oosawa's delicious cooking. As a single parent, Oosawa works very hard and doesn't have time to make many close friends, or even consider dating. But when his beloved daughter Mizu falls ill and Yoshioka offers his help, Oosawa finds he must accept this frivolous seeming person's outstretched hand. Yet, sometimes people are not quite what they seem, as Oosawa discovers. A tender romance story of a single father, a lonely businessman, and the child who brings them together.

This yaoi is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and the art is pretty. It has the perfect balance of drama, sex, humour and romance. So, I really can't say anything bad about it. I’ve read all of Asou Kai’s work that is available in English and this is one of the best. Five stars!

The lovely part about this story is that it isn't insta-love, and it isn't a booty call. The characters start off as acquaintances, and only through a series of events do they develop a closer relationship. Naoki is a single parent, and anyone who is familiar with the role of parenthood knows how challenging it can be to care for a young child. There's always something to take care of, from house chores to school issues to the child themselves.

Even though Mizu is a sweet and cooperative child, some things that have nothing to do with attitude can be a problem. Namely, sickness. Or the fact that Mizu's mother still has partial custody over her.

For Naoki, the thought of dealing with a job and a child, the idea of love just doesn't fit into the picture. Though Yoshioka is not easily dissuaded when it comes to pursuing Naoki, Naoki cannot afford to let another person in.

But like it or not, he cannot avoid Yoshioka. Yoshioka won't leave him alone, and when things become overly complicated for Naoki, Yoshioka is right there to support him. Again and again Yoshioka proves to Naoki that the man needs him, and there's just no way he's going to let him go after witnessing all his vulnerabilities.

Truly, this is a sweet story touching on the life of two men going through the rough times the life brings them, and coming out of the trenches together more united and happier than before. For anyone wishing to read a story that's not overly dramatic or fantasy, but more down to earth and has a realistic feel to it, then this is story is right up your alley. It pulls at your heartstrings and makes you all warm and fuzzy inside in the end.

Overall: 5

Nao is a divorcee who works at a restaurant. He's also a full time dad to a little girl named Chizu. He's a friendly man to all the customers with the exception of Yoshi.

Yoshi is a flirtatious salary guy who occupies Nao's restaurant on an every day basis. He lives locally (literally up the street).

Nao knows Yoshi's flirtatious nature and witnesses it many times; particularly when Yoshi comes in with a new 'boyfriend' very often. Yoshi makes many passes at Nao, in a light hearted way and not a creepy pervert way. (HA HA)

Yoshi comes to Nao's rescue when Nao's daughter is running a high fever and he honestly is about the panic because he lives too far from the nearest hospital and everything starts running through his head. Yoshi comes to the rescue and gets Chizu the help she needs and even offers Nao a resolution to his worries.

Yoshi living close to Nao's job; offers to look after Chizu while he goes to work and he can come and check on her easily.

I really loved this story. It was easy flowing and an some way realistic. I really wish there were more than two volumes because the story was just that good.

Yoshi truly captured me, he had faults and flaws but he admitted to them and never faltered on his emotions or trying to capturing Nao's affections.

This story had no huge drama, thank goodness. There was a bit of angst and a situation, but that was nothing too bad. I loved that the main focus was the development between Nao, Yoshi, and even Chizu.

I loved it so much, I think I'll go back to read it again! :D

Such a sweet love story and very down-to-earth. No typical Uke-Seme relationship, but a real relationship between two adults and a child. The story develops at a slow pace and is very sincere and serious. I cried when I read it because the main character is in a very difficult spot, but at the end I felt good - calm and happy. Even the beautiful and calm style reflects the nature of the manga. I have to say this is one really fine manga.

The main character is the hard-working single father Oosawa with his adorable daughter Chizu. And then there is the homosexual Yoshioka, who frequently changes partners and is a customer at the restaurant where Oosawa works. When Chizu gets a fever and Oosawa acknowledges that he has nobody to turn to, Yoshioka offers his help and they stay at his place for a while. Both men have a problem with asking for and accepting help from others and slowly learn to depend on each other. Yoshioka asks Oosawa to move in with him because he has a huge flat near the kindergarten and the shop, and he is a bit lonely left to himself. Oosawa even thinks about accepting the offer (while concerned that Yoshioka might make a move on him), Chizu's mother, who left the two some time ago, tells him she is remarrying and wants to take Chizu in, thinking she provides a better environment.
