This was the first book I read in 2026, and it started me on a real E. M. Delafield deepdive because of how interesting it was. I don't get the impression it's widely read these days. It's a genuinely fascinating study of a woman who couldn't be more clearly a lesbian, but this is never articulated in the text and certainly it isn't something she's able to articulate to herself. Instead, she just careens from one over-intense, onesided attachment to another, briefly getting engaged to a guy she feels absolutely nothing for and only breaking it off because he doesn't even give her the pleasure of feeling loved, because the only man who is willing to propose to someone who has no sexual interest in him is one with no ideas of romance or strong feeling. She makes beautifully terrible decisions - joining a convent because you have a crush on a nun is never likely to end well - in her desperate desire to be seen and loved by women, a desire that is of course never fulfilled because of its impossibility and inconceivability. Her life is stunted and tragic and she can't even play tennis. I loved this book.
