While Victoria tracks down the cabal, Tierra is helping Front Burner rebuild while ignoring the story of the century – one she no longer has any leads to follow. When a cryptic new puzzle arrives for her from beyond the grave, Tierra races to crack a code that she hopes will lead her to the roots of a conspiracy in time to stop them from succeeding.

Eager to read a political thriller series that once more has parallels to the present US situation, I turned to the next novel in this collection by Mikael Carlson. The latest US General Election is only a month away and there is no clear front-runner yet. After a powerful cabal attempted to derail the New Hampshire Democratic Primary earlier in the year, everyone is sure something is brewing on Polling Day. This cabal dedicated political soldiers is led by Ian Drucker and they have a new plan, looking to the state of Pennsylvania. This could be the place where the political logjam is loosened and places someone in the White House. Media outlets seek to spin things as best they can, but one investigative mind--Tierra Campos--is looking deeper to find corruption. When a printing factory is scorched and ballots for the upcoming election are discovered, questions arise and thoughts of potential malfeasance are spreading. All the while, FBI Special Agent Victoria Larsen has been demoted after an injury and is now being sent to Africa. Larsen is not eager to go and begins helping Tierra with an investigation into the fire and the larger impact Drucker’s group has planned. With powerful forces of this cabal hiding in positions of power, no one is safe and the election could have significant consequences for a country teetering in the balance. Tierra Campos is not one to stand down, particularly when she receives a cryptic message that could lead her to answers and reveal the string pullers. There is no time to waste for either Tierra or Special Agent Larsen, as democracy needs all the help it can get, though even Election Night could be a sham. Mikael Carlson delivers a tense thriller that sets the groundwork for an entertaining series finale.
Mikael Carlson is an author whose political thrillers I have read before. He presents yet another foundation in this fourth novel in the series that engages the reader. The story presents what series fans have been waiting to see, election night and two strong presidential candidates wanting the Oval Office. Carlson finds parallels to the actual presidential election of 2020 with the narrative, but spins things in his own way. Pushing ideas that have built through the past books, the reader is led through many exciting happenings with no time to spare. Short chapters guide the story along and there is no doubt the need to keep reading is high on the reader's agenda, if only to find out what happens. Multiple perspectives through narrative eyes gives the reader a full view of events from all sides, good and bad alike. Carlson has a way of pulling the reader in and refuses to let go, with such captivating storytelling.
Characters prove impactful from the opening pages. Readers will know the likes of Tierra Campos and Victoria Larsen, who have developed well and in a number of ways. There are some supporting characters who return from past novels and flavour things in their own way, while new faces serve to reveal the nefarious nature of electoral interference or protecting the Republic. Mikael Carlson does well to keep the reader involved with everyone and ensures that no character is placed solely for window dressing. Helping to guide the reader, these characters add a layer of intrigue for the series fan.
Surprises and political development are core in a thriller of this nature and this series has not fallen short. Mikael Carlson imbeds twists into into the story at the ideal times to hook the reader. Political thrillers usually need something to keep things from being predictable and Carlson always has something happening. Carlson offers numerous crumbs and forks in the road, with the final novel to come. There is so much that needs resolving and the surprises keep the reader guessing what awaits them with each turn of the page. I am eager to see what is to come when the dust settles on all that took place in this penultimate book of the series, though I know Mikael Carlson will not disappoint as I reach for Book 5.
Kudos, Mr. Carlson, for an explosive novel that left me with so many questions!

Keeps on Ticking....
With each book I devour the detail which the author injects into the story. His diverse knowledge of many topics adds to the intrigue and the enjoyment of the reading.

This story is complicated beyond belief.
When Tierra Compos finds herself fired again and again,it looks as w nothing could be worse. She's so wrong about that!

Another well-thought out plot
Usually i give her novels a 5, but this one made it hard to see who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. A little confusing in parts.
