Instanolde Chronicles #1

Queen of Shifting Sands: Instanolde Chronicles #1

Rate this book
A crownless queen. A cursed prince. One summer to live.

The stars have aligned in the kingdom of Instanolde, or so Lystra believes as she eagerly awaits her wedding day. Her beloved, the king, is everything her heart desires, but when a brutal attack leaves her betrothed dead and Instanolde on the cusp of collapse, she finds her future in ruins, and the throne beyond her reach. With invasion looming across the desert, Lystra refuses to let grief keep her from defending her kingdom—even if that means forging a marriage alliance with Elerek, the brother of her lost love, a prince shrouded in secrets.

Elerek, now heir to the throne, has spent his life waiting to die. An untouchable curse lurks beneath his skin, and though he aches to see its suffocating hold severed, he’s long given up hope. When his brother’s death drags him from the shadows, Elerek must find the strength to shoulder the crown’s burdens and secure a queen—a wife to protect his kingdom after the curse claims him. With the adoration of the people already in the palm of her hands, Lystra is the ideal candidate. But even if she doesn’t spurn him for his ruinous curse, he’ll need to protect her from its dangers—and his heart as he finds himself steadily drawn to the girl’s unbreakable spirit. With death on the horizon, Elerek must become the king he never planned to be and save Instanolde before his time runs out.

Lystra and Elerek only have one summer to prepare their kingdom for invasion, but more than one threat prowls their desert, and the cost of survival might just destroy them all.

Queen of Shifting Sands is a fantastical romantic adventure where duty and endurance grapple amid the sands of chaos. Lovers of intrigue, high stakes, and slow-burn romance will fall in love with this escape into a rich, immersive fantasy world.

Hello adventurous readers, thank you for being here. I write this as an author humbled and in awe that this tale of sand and stars and fierce queens and cursed princes will now begin its new adventure as my debut novel.

Queen of Shifting Sands began with the spark of an idea surrounding a lush, desert world, the threat of an enemy army, and an arranged marriage that would save the kingdom. Once the rather large piece that is the deadly curse threatening the prince came into play, I had a story that fought as fiercely as its characters. This was my pandemic book, began in February 2020, following a difficult 2019. In many ways, it is a story of grief, of finding a new way forward, knowing one will not be the same. It is a story of redeeming the time when the days are evil and seeking starlight in the darkest of places. And, it is the story of two people who learn to find strength in one another, and a love that endures despite all that would destroy it.

It is my desire that this tale would give you an adventure, that fantastic escape that draws us to books, and that it leaves you with starlight--a bit of courageous hope.

Queen of Shifting Sands had plenty of unique ideas but i wasn’t the biggest fan of the execution unfortunately. the way the curse in Instanolde turns people’s bodies into water until they eventually drown wasn’t like anything i’ve read before. i liked the desert setting and the main characters were ok for the most part. idk, i guess i just wanted more from this as a whole.

“He understands my pain, understands in a way that I never thought I’d find. He has shielded me, encouraged me, and emboldened me.”

it took me forever to read this and i can’t say im that interested to continue in this series if im being honest. the story was too slow moving and so was the scrap of romance. i also didn’t like how much Lystra mentioned the resemblance Elerek had to her dead husband (they’re brothers). it just gave me a weird feeling since it felt like she was comparing them a little too much and i can’t fully get behind a eventual romance between Lystra and Elerek when im not 100% sure she’s falling for Elerek for the right reasons. i appreciated seeing the disability rep with Elerek and how he uses a wheelchair though. i do think this had potential and i didn’t hate it, but it just fell a little flat.

thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing Co-op for the arc, all opinions are my own.

A young woman beloved by her people, a Prince cursed to the shadows, and a fantastical desert kingdom that everyone wants to rule. Queen of Shifting Sands is the perfect blend of epic fantasy and romance. The dual POV, the sweet mutual pining, the romantic angst, the fantasy politics, and the whodunnit elements will all have you glued to the pages. This immersive, closed door, contemplative slow burn is a tale you should not miss!

arc provided in exchange for an honest review.

"queen of shifting sands" was such a unique fantasy adventure! the desert setting was ripe with beautiful culture and fascinating creatures, and the political and romance aspects were a fun addition. i did find that the story dragged at some parts – especially in the middle – and the plot-twists weren’t particularly shocking, but it was a fun read.

“up above, the stars he loved so dearly danced in all their might, singing ancient proverbs. In a glorious exchange, the sky turned orange and the sand turned pale blue.”

the worldbuilding was the strongest aspect of the novel – bold, creative, and so fun to read. massive lizard-ish creatures that people raced and rode to battle, long gorgeous draping fabrics, battles with both magic and weapon. i thought the magic was really well woven into the story, and the entire concept of curses – especially the central curse – was really unique and interesting to read about.

“with this crown, i crown you, lystra, daughter of house arghan, queen of instanolde. may you reign with grace, honor, and a strength as sure as the dancing stars above.”

lystra was also such a cool fmc, though i have to admit that i wasn’t allll that invested in her story. she was strong and perseverant, which i admired, but i just couldn’t connect with her at times… but i found that i felt the same way about most of the characters.

“tragic, and yet noble. unbroken despite a world that had waged its worst. a man who both lived and died in the same cursed breath.”

i did really like certain parts of our mmc’s character – he was caring and he really thought things through, which is always a good character trait for kings. plus i loved the rep of him being in a wheelchair! i thought that was really well done (though i wouldn’t know personally), and i thought it blended well with his character. however he had this portrayal of being socially awkward and abrupt, which i just didn’t really see? like we kept getting told that he wasn’t great at socialising, but i could never see it… anyway, he was a cutie.

“despite their differences, the divides between them, and the distance the curse required, perhaps they could do this, accomplish the impossible.”

the romance was… mixed. i don’t know, i got invested at some stages, and then un-invested again. i thought the pacing was a bit off – it was like they were both grieving and barely had genial feelings for each other, and then instead of a slow build up, they were just kinda in love? like i swear they didn’t even have that many convos. also the slight love triangle with another character was a little odd.

nonetheless, overall this was a really interesting read! great adventure and political intrigue, stunning worldbuilding. thank you so much to the author, publisher and netgalley for the arc copy!

This is one of my new favorite books.

Beautiful prose, world building, loveable (or hateable *cough* grandmother *cough*) characters, slow burn romance, banter, beautiful quotes, and the perfect conflict. I absolutely enjoyed it.

I especially appreciate the grief and pain in this story. The author went through her own trials and she bled them in this book. From her vulnerability we have an honest story of pain and starlight (hope) that readers can feel and believe.

The worldbuilding is one of the most unique concepts I've seen. I should have seen that coming when I realized the author reads Brandon Sanderson books, haha. It is incredible.

The desert setting feels so real, also grown from the author's love for nature and her own adventures in it.

Does it end on a cliffhanger? It does and while I am terrified for the conclusion in book 2, I will (im)patiently be waiting for next year.

Thank you Kaitlyn for not giving up on this story and for all the stories you have and will spin.

Queen of Shifting Sands is a slowwww book. I feel as if I spent forever reading it, and that's its main flaw. I read the prequel before getting into this, and it almost feels like it was written by two different people, because the pacing there was so much better than it was here.

Based on the blurb (and pretty cover), I was expecting this to be right up my alley, so I'm a bit sad it wasn't. For how exciting and action-y the prequel was, this was the complete opposite. All the way up to the end I wasn't sure if I wanted to read the next one, but that was when things finally started happening, so I think I will because I do want to know what's going to happen next.

Now for the good stuff, the characters!! Okay so, I liked Lystra the most in Daughter of the Desert, but my, how the tables have turned. I still like her, don't worry, but Razhar stole the show. He's my absolute fav in this book. I also liked Elerek a smidge more than Lystra.

I wonder though, if my ranking would've been different had I not read the prequel. Maybe Lystra would seem like a more engaging MC, but knowing what she's capable of, she just didn't give much of that here. There's still time for her to do so in the sequel, so I'm not too worried.

I also loved that Elerek was a disabled main character & love interest. He uses a wheelchair and proves that disabled MCs belong in fantasy worlds, so I will be shoving this book in the next person's face who dares to tell me they don't. I think it was very respectfully done, so hats off to Kaitlyn Carter Brown, you did such a good job, thank you.

I liked the romance between them, but it developed a bit too fast. Especially knowing how much she cared for and loved his brother. If they'd fallen in love by the end of the duology or somewhere in book two I think it would've worked for me more.

The plot reminded me a bit of The Wrath and the Dawn at the start and I liked it overall, I just wish more was happening throughout.

The curse aspect was so unique and it's probably one of the things I'm most excited to see more of in the next book.

Speaking of, if it continues where we left off, and with a similar pace, I could see the next one hitting four or more stars. It just had a bit of a rough start is all, now on we go to more adventures!!!

A rare book that makes the reader feel brave, Queen of Shifting Sands is a wild and vivid fantasy romance perfect for fans of Adrienne Young and Leigh Bardugo. This gorgeous book is a tale for those who seek starlight in the darkest night. With characters both noble and fiery, a heartrending marriage of convenience, and an ending that left me breathless, this debut is immersive, noble storytelling at its finest.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. ✨

This book was a pleasant discovery, I really enjoyed reading about the interesting world and amazing characters this book has. 💕

This book tells the story of Lystra, a lady from an important family who is engaged to the future king, however after being attacked by enemies the king dies and Lystra, who loves and wishes to protect her kingdom, is forced to marry Elerek, the cursed brother who now becomes the new heir and future king of Instanolde so that she can become queen and protect her people from their enemies.
Let's talk about the characters!

“The people are obsessed with Torra Lystra,” Elerek muttered. He could hardly blame them. The image of the beautiful queen who had survived a Jarkin attack and returned with her betrothed's body burned into his mind with the heat of the funeral pyre.

I loved Lystra, she is such a strong and kind character, her devotion and love for her kingdom is admirable, I really liked her evolution throughout the book. Her people love her, although, I would have liked more explanation of her relationship with her people and the reason why there is such love for her. 👑

Elerek sat tall upon a cardant—Sama, she realized. Clad in armor, his shoulders were broad beneath the halberk. His eyes blazed with wrath, with fire, with a consuming vengeance. A king to execute the justice the invaders served.

Elerek was a refreshing character to read, I loved being able to read a character in a wheelchair and knowing that this was not a difficulty that prevented him from reigning as an excellent king, the love he has for his family is admirable and the desire to seeing his kingdom safe and at peace is something that moved me a lot. Knowing his story with his curse and everything he had to go through broke my heart. 💔

“I meant what I said, you were beautiful tonight.”

I really liked the relationship between these two characters, I would have liked to see more of the evolution of the love between the two, however I felt that their relationship was instantaneous and quick, having both lost someone important, it was difficult for them to confess their feelings. I loved seeing their dynamics and chemistry in some scenes and I hope that the next book shows more about their relationship. 🥰

what to expect?
✅ dual POV
✅ Cursed Prince
✅ Fantastic creatures
✅ Arranged marriage
✅ Found family

The closer I got to the end of this book, the closer my face got to the page. I turned pages like it was going out of style, held my breath like it was the last one, and leaned in close to inhale the words .
And now that I am done, I can't believe I have to wait until next year for the next book. The audacity of it all!

Where the prequel "Daughter of the Desert" was a fast-paced, world-focused read, "Queen of Shifting Sands" is a slow-burn, zooming in on the people of Instanolde and the struggles they face one fateful summer. It's sad and it's heavy and it's beautiful, and it swept me away.

I loved being back with Lystra, and I just want good things for her always. Elerek grew on me very quickly, a tragic figure who, despite being pretty depressed, still does hold on to the good things he has, even if he doesn't realize that's what he's doing. Rahzar balanced them perfectly, and the rest of the surrounding cast made the world feel so rich and vibrant and alive.

I cannot wait for book 2 (I need it NOW) because that ending was... oof... 5 stars from me!

First and foremost, this book has an ACTUAL slow burn. Like, don't expect them to be sneering at each other in one chapter and falling into each other's arms in the next. The burn is so deliciously slow and it absolutely works for the pace and tone of this book.

Second... I'm obsessed with the cardants. I need twelve.

I love the dual POV and mutual pining. I'm not usually big into political drama but this is done very well, with the mystery of Elerek's curse and Lystra's complicated feelings all interwoven together.

I'm not great at reviews. But Kaitlyn is great at writing and this book proves it. I need book two yesterday.

I really really loved this. Lystra? A wonderful FMC. El? A wonderful MMC. The plot was great. I liked so much about this.

But I think timing was off and that was my biggest issue. I would’ve liked to see more time between Cormek’s death and the arranged marriage. I also would’ve liked the timeline to move a little slower. More believable that way? I’m not sure. I also was not sure what to do with Myra. Biggest problem? People in this book REFUSED TO COMMUNICATE and it irritated me to no end.

Anyway: Razhar is great and I need a book 2

First, thank you, Netgalley and Whimsical Publishing, for providing me with an ARC to review. I picked this book to read because I felt the premise was interesting, and I am pleased to say it was. I liked the setting and the driving force that made the characters continue to work towards the greater good. However, I will have to take away one star because of the lack of direct communication between the main characters, Elerek and Lystra. They emphasized always giving each other the truth, but neither ever asked the other questions because they decided that the other would tell them when the time was right. This frustrated me, but I had to let it slide because I enjoyed different aspects of the book.
I look forward to reading more of this series by Kaitlyn Carter Brown!

"They'd taken vows of paper and destined to burn for the sake of their kingdom"

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

I loved this. The writing was beautiful, as were the characters. It was not what I expected from the story but the grief of Lystra combined with Elerek's guilt over the curse gave it a sad undertone to the beautiful story. The pacing of the storyline was slow but it was done in a way that wasn't boring, the growth of their relationship was captivating as was the world building. There were so many beautiful quotes that I absolutely loved and this was an amazing story, highly recommend.

My favourite quotes:

"He had not only been her chance to be free, but to be loved and cherished for all that she was and all she could be"

"Lystra inhaled slowly as the tension rose like the shimmering mirages of heat rising from the desert floor"

"But the strong could fall, Elerek thought morosely. Even kings."

A magnificent story of choosing to live when it seems only death surrounds you. With complex heroes, despicable villains, and secrets around every corner, Queen Of Shifting Sands is a book you don’t want to miss!

A few other things to convince you to read it:
- marriage of convenience
- disability representation (wheelchair-bound MMC)
- brothers in bond
- slow-burn romance
- cursed royalty
- cardants (desert dragons!)
- Razhar (I can't help it, he's my favorite)

I was so giddy to get an ARC of this book. Not going to lie. The cover is so stunning, the synopsis called to me and after reading the prelude to this book, Daughter of the Desert,I dived into this book enthusiastically.
In this stunning novel, we find our heroine,Lystra, suffering in the wake of unspeakable tragedy. Her soon to be husband and company murdered, her the only survivor. Her future now stands on shaky ground but she is determined to not let grief keep her from defending her kingdom. Even if that means forging a marriage alliance with Elerek, the brother of her lost love, a prince shrouded in secrets.
Elerek, now heir to the throne, has spent his life waiting to die. An untouchable curse lurks beneath his skin, and though he aches to see its suffocating hold severed, he's long given up hope. When his brother's death drags him from the shadows, Elerek must find the strength to shoulder the crown's burdens and secure a queen—a wife to protect his kingdom after the curse claims him.
With death on the horizon, Elerek must become the king he never planned to be and save Instanolde before his time runs out. Lystra and Elerek only have one summer to prepare their kingdom for invasion, but more than one threat prowls their desert, and the cost of survival might just destroy them all.
If that alone doesn’t get you to read this book I don’t know what will.
What I loved about this book is Kaitlyn’s ability to bring this world to life and make you feel like you are really there. To feel the desert heat on your skin to the smells and tastes that you transport you straight into Instanolde. I for sure now have the need to want to ride a cardant across the desert, with the wind in my hair and the miles of sand flying past me.
This book made me feel such a range of emotions from grief at the beginning of this book in the aftermath of a tragedy to the fear of the curse taking life’s to happiness of promised new love. Lystra is one of those characters that you can’t help but root for with her strong sense of justice and fighting for the life she wants to live. And reading Elerek’s journey from cursed not meant to be king into a man that his late brother would be proud of was just awe inspiring. This book was a solid start to a series that I am already ready for a sequel to be in my hands.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a book that sucks you in and doesn’t let you go.

Thank you so much to Whimsical Publishing for an ARC of this book. It was such a honor to read this book. My review is a honest reflection of my feelings towards this book.

I can honestly say I've never read a debut that was so confidently and expertly written.

Some might say the beginning was "slow" but like an amateur chess player versus a grandmaster, it only feels that way because you don't realize how many pawns Kaitlyn has moved into place until they're pressing in on your hopes and dreams for this story. Then you'll be taken by maneuvers you weren't expecting and if you're not careful, you'll be forced to sacrifice your queen.

Kaitlyn knows what she's doing and we should probably all be on the lookout. I loved her execution of setting and symbolism and can't wait to see what else she has written for these characters. On the page or in the stars, I'll be reading it.

The story has a good start it get your attention right away. Lystra looses her be betrothed in an attack at the beginning of the book. She meets his brother Elerek in his funeral which she had not seen before. Right at the bat a rivalry is created were both want the throne. To add to the story Elerek is cursed and he cannot have direct physical contact with no one because he can spread his curse by touch. Their skin starts to turn to water and they drown at the end.

The curse was very interesting and unique I had never see in a book such type of curse. What I also like was that the MMC was in a wheelchair this was so refreshing to see in a fantasy book. The world was so interesting and I wanted to know more about it. Which takes me to my next point and the reason why for my rating.

I never understood why was Lystra so loved by her people what did she do to gain their love? it was never explained. I just knew that people love her. Also at the beginning of the story she kept saying that she was the best person to take throne because the people were struggling but it was never stated how the only thing I knew was that an attack was coming and that was the only tread so far that I could see. I felt that she was so hype up in the story as is she were such a badass which is the end she was not. And I would have like more explanation about what role did the stars played into the story since they were mentioned a lot by the characters. Finally I really didn’t felt the romantic connection between the main characters.

Goodreads won't let me add that .5 and I give this a 4.5! It's very slow-burn but it owns that slow-burn. I'm looking forward to hearing more of Razhar's story, he was fun and mysterious. And I appreciated Lystra's steady strength, and loyalty. There were so many times that she was hurt and I think she could have made other choices, but she didn't and there's a beauty in that. I also learned to love grumpy El more and more throughout. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more!

This was written so beautifully! Full of rich descriptions and deep emotions, it didn’t take long to pull me in and make me invested in what happened to both Lystra and Elerek. (And let’s be honest; Razhar, too.)

There were definitely moments that frustrated me. Certain characters made some regrettable or questionable choices, and oh, how I wanted to shake them! But of course, it’s hard to know how I really feel about those things until I’ve read the other half of the duology.

Overall, though…so good! The plot, despite its slower pace, held some surprises, especially near the end. I really enjoyed the way Lystra’s and Elerek’s strengths shone through as they came together for their kingdom. And since I’m always a sucker for close friendships, the dynamic with Elerek and Razhar was a bonus for me.

With the way it ended, I am so curious to see what happens next!

(But am I being set up for pain? I fear there’s pain in store.😭)

What a wild ride! I adored the characters, which usually means I'm going to love the book no matter what. Elerek and Lystra both were complex and interesting, both individually and as a team, and I loved seeing their relationship form. Elerek, in particular, fascinated me; I have a soft spot for the "underdog" MMCs who have obvious weaknesses but manage to rise above them and face darkness both interiorly and exteriorly. Can't wait for the sequel.

*I received an ARC for free via BookSirens and am reviewing voluntarily*

I was absolutely captivated by this book. It's not often I find a story that can whisk me away into a new land whilst also feeling incredibly grounded. If you're a fan of light-fantasy elements and slow-build relationships, I cannot recommend this enough.

The world feels realistic, and what fantastical elements there are are woven intricately and feel believable. The author has a real talent for description, and both characters and settings felt very vivid in my mind. There's a beautiful scene where the main characters ride out into the desert on the cardants that feels so raw - setting and emotional staging came together perfectly.

The characters are all so very human, with flaws and complexities. None slip into a trope or predictable caricature. I didn't get on with our FMC Lystra initially because she had an air of entitlement about her, but you really get to know her throughout the story and understand that she was raised with certain expectations that she herself is aware of and trying to overcome. Meanwhile Elerek has a bit of a broody nature characterised by insecurity that you just so desperately want to see him overcome.

I love that the romantic plotline here stemmed as an arranged/convenient marriage but unlike a lot of books that use the trope, these two were allies from the very beginning, working towards a common goal. It made the growth of their relationship feel so much more real because I could actually feel them aligning more and more until their bond wasn't just about saving the kingdom.

What, it can’t just end like that! I need to know what happens to Elerek, and my girl Lystra 😩

This was such a beautifully written story about grief and loss, duty, and choosing to see people for who they really are. Lystra is betrothed to Cormek, the king, who is brutally killed in an attack, and instead she finds herself marrying Cormek’s brother, the prince-heir Elerek, to form a unified alliance for the kingdom as the new king and queen. Elerek however is cursed, and no one can touch him without becoming cursed themselves.

I loved reading about the kingdom of Instanolde, the world building was gorgeous, and I loved the characters. Lystra isn’t a warrior but she is strong in other ways that matter, she is the perfect FMC and I really felt for her throughout. Elerek is haunted by the curse, but is so determined and sweet - though I did not appreciate what he did towards the end..! I can understand it but I didn’t like it! I did appreciate the disability representation; Elerek is disabled and uses a wheelchair but I didn’t feel like he was defined by it.

The water curse was so original and I haven’t read anything like it before, and I loved the concept of the cardants (large lizards) too, though I can’t help but picture them as very large, bearded dragons.

I’m rating this a 4.5 because it did take me a little while to get into it, and I wasn’t totally surprised by the reveals towards the end but I loved the plot, the characters and the tension between the MCs ♥️ The slow burn romance is very slow burn, which it has to be because you know, they can’t touch..! I hope Elerek and Lystra solve these problems and many others in the next book which I am impatiently waiting for!!

I read this as an ARC through NetGalley, thank you ♥️!

Wow! This was incredible. I loved the desert world so much. And the characters were all so lovable and I enjoyed watching their growth.
I was intrigued from the very beginning with the death of Lystra's Fiance. The pacing was good and I didn't feel bored. But I felt like some scenes should have been expanded.
My only complaint is that some parts felt redundant, as in reminding you of the timeline they were going against or just how dreadful Elerek thought of his life.

I really hope there is more to come!

Lystra has trained all her life to be queen but when the young king she is betrothed to dies and war threatens, her world is shattered and she faces a series of difficult choices. What will be best for her beloved kingdom?

This is easily one of the most heartfelt fantasies I have read in a long time. The worldbuilding is fantastic, rich and immersive. You can see and hear and smell and taste Instanolde on every page.

The story is thrilling and full of unexpected surprises. Lystra, Elerek and all the other characters are complex, full of very human flaws but also growing and changing and maturing as the story continues. I love the politics, the family relationships, the friendship and the romance. And of course the cardants and the desert!

Queen of Shifting Sands has definitely earned a place on my list of favourite books.

Me reading the first two pages: I think this is going to be a five star read! Initially I requested this Arc because I loved the cover and the book title (that’s how I usually choose books). I literally INHALED this book! I just absolutely love, love, love, this book!

This read was mind blowingly transfixing! It’s been a little since I’ve had a page turner like this one. I love this book so much there was not one dull moment. I can’t wait for the next book!! Why did it have to end on a cliffhanger like that?!

Queen of the shifting sands follows Lystra and Elerek who have formed an alliance after the tragic death of Lystras betrothed and Elereks brother. Trying to save their people and the Kingdom, the two of them try to find ways to not only break curses but also the best way to battle against their enemies.

With Elerek’s vast knowledge and strategic thinking, and Lystra’s intelligence and quick thinking, they find solutions and answers for their Goals or will they?

Thank you so much NetGalley for this ARC !!!

I really liked this book, it is well written and the world building is fantastic. The main characters are lovable and strong and the slow burn is also very well written. The disability representation was also very well implemented and nice to read, as I haven't really come across it until now, especially in fanatics books.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Fans of The Remnant Chronicles or City of Brass need not wait any longer for the desert fantasy they’ve been missing.

Both Lystra and Elerek’s desire to lead their people well, through crushing grief, inspired me to be more mindful in my choices.

The world is complex with raiders threatening the safety of both their people and beloved cardants- giant lizards they ride like horses.

I found the ending satisfying but left me with enough questions that I NEED the next installment asap!

This book is amazing. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoy fantasy with a Moroccan influence. Deserts, kings and queens, war, defending your homeland from invaders ... it all lends itself to an epic story. Carter-Brown's writing is beautiful, and her prose is lovely. This is one of my top favorite fantasies and I cannot wait for book 2 releasing in April!

First of all, can we talk about this cover? Absolutely gorgeous!
This was such an amazing book, the story of two people who suffered so much, and yet found companionship, understanding and love in each other.
I can’t wait to read how this story continues and to learn more about the world in this book. The cliffhanger destroyed me! I need the next book right now!
Thank you NetGalley for the arc!
