From #1 New York Times bestselling author Marshall Karp comes the next installment in the endlessly thrilling NYPD Red series.
It’s 11:59.
And the city that never sleeps is afraid to get out of bed.
A bomb explodes in a crowded New York subway station at exactly 11:59 a.m. The next day, a second blast rips through a busy department store—again at 11:59.
As the bombs go off with clockwork precision, the death toll climbs and businesses shut their doors as the city hunkers down in fear.
NYPD Red Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan face their most twisted case ever, as they race against the clock in search of one man who has vowed “to destroy New York City the way it destroyed my family.”
Marshall Karp is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a TV and screenwriter, documentarian, and playwright. Working with James Patterson, Marshall cocreated and cowrote the NYPD Red series. After six bestsellers, Marshall has carried the series forward on his own, beginning with NYPD Red 7: The Murder Sorority. Marshall is also the author of Snowstorm in August, as well as the critically acclaimed Lomax and Biggs novels, featuring LAPD Detectives Mike Lomax and Terry Biggs. For over twenty years he has worked closely with the international charity Vitamin Angels, providing tens of millions of mothers and children around the globe with lifesaving vitamins and nutrients.
As NYPD Red Detectives, Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan chased an elusive killer - the 11.59 bomber - their frustration mounted. First the subway bomb which killed six, going off at 11.59, then the following day, the department store bomb, also at 11.59. People were terrified, not knowing when or where the next bomb would go off. Just before the first bomb, 911 received a call, saying the person was going "to destroy New York City the way it destroyed my family." And so it seemed that person was doing so. But was he working alone, or did he have a partner?
Meanwhile Kylie's husband, who had disappeared two years prior, reappeared at a movie preview where he lost the plot, belting the director and yelling he would kill him. Kylie and Zach happened to be there and were horrified, but more so a few hours later when said director was found dead. The NYPD were working 24/7, including the Red team, and seemed to be getting nowhere fast. Could they find the bomber before he struck again? And could they discover whether Kylie's husband killed the director? Or not...?
NYPD Red 8: The 11:59 Bomber is the 8th in the NYPD Red series by Marshall Karp and I have read them all except #7. I started when Karp was writing beside James Patterson and now writing on his own, he's kept up the excellent pace, the thrills and twists, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ending was unrealistic to me, but didn't change my rating - after all, it's fiction! Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley & Blackstone Publishing for my digital ARC to read and review.
__________________________ “Vengeance is a dish best served with New York Style pizza.” — Confucius
As the book begins, the mayor of New York City receives an anonymous threatening call from a man who is as bitter as alum-infused quinine water. This anonymous caller—who is extremely rich, petty, and powered entirely by grievance—has decided that because his lawsuit against NYC was tossed out of court, he will embark on a revenge ride. They can’t do this to HIM! [No, you’re wrong. It is not that guy. That's a different narcissist entirely.] The villain promises the mayor that he will destroy New York a little piece at a time, and one minute later, a bomb goes off at a subway station, killing several innocent people. The subway bombing is just the beginning.
Retribution is the leitmotif in this police procedural. There is more vindictive behavior in this book than in the stories of Gunfight at the OK Corral, Julius Caesar, Moby Dick, and Hamlet combined. I counted at least 6 separate characters in the book trying to avenge one thing or another. A bit of overkill, I’d say, if I didn’t think you were going to moan so loudly about it— Geesh! Get a sense of humor.
🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars.
I am a great fan of all of Marshall Karp’s mysteries and police procedurals, and you better agree with me or…you know…else.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Marshall Karp, and Blackstone Publishing for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Having long enjoyed the work of Marshall Karp, both as a standalone and collaborative author, I was eager to pick up the latest in the NYPD Red series. New York City is rocked when a bomb explodes at a subway station, precisely at 11:59am. The next day, a second blast rips through a busy store at the exact same time. NYPD Red Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan are called in by the brass and begin their curious investigation. More explosions on subsequent days at the same one minute before noon hint that the killer has a specific motive. All the while, a filmmaker is murdered and someone close to Detective MacDonald could be involved. In a race for answers, the clock is ticking and it’s almost 11:59! Karp delivers an entertaining book that works well for series fans.
I have enjoyed Marshall Karl’s collaborative efforts with James Patterson, particularly with this series. I explored some of Karp’s solo work, which always comes with a solid narrative. Karp crafts this story well and adds solidifying action to provide something highly entertaining, while things gain momentum before reaching their climax. There is a definite connection with the larger series on which Karp draws repeatedly.
Character development works well, with a vast array of those who seek to flavour the piece in their own way. Detectives MacDonald and Jordan have long been central to the series, providing some great character development for all to see. Some personal revelations about the latter serve as a subplot series fans are sure to enjoy following. Many other returning characters flavour the piece well and keep things edgy, while new faces turn things on their head and leave the reader eager to learn more.
While the reader is handling two distinct main storylines in this piece, there is no lag with any action. Karp weaves surprises and twists into the story, incorporating tension into a piece that never wanes. The flow of the story works well with all that is going on, providing the reader with an entertaining time throughout and linking past aspects of the series with this one. Marshall Karp has done well and leaves me eager to see where things are headed.
Kudos, Mr. Karp, for an explosive addition to the collection.
First of all, a massive thank you to Marshall Karp for sending me a copy of NYPD Red : The 11:59 Bomber to read,I am a big fan of this series, that began with Karp writing with James Patterson, and now on his own. This is book 8 in the series and still going strong.
New York City is under siege. At 11:59 a bomb goes off, killing multiple people. The next day, another bomb in another high profile location. NYPD Red are called in to stop the bomber, but he is smart and doesn’t leave them anything to go off to find him. Who is doing this and why?
Zach Jordan and Kylie McDonald have their hands full with this case, while dealing with personal issues at the same time. Kylie’s husband returns to the city and finds himself in hot water again, while Zach has to find the right way to tell someone the truth about their relationship.
This story is intense from the very beginning. The bombs could turn up anywhere and New Yorkers are scared. The bomber has a gripe with the city and wants his revenge. It is a fast paced page turner that would make a fantastic movie.
I loved being back on the case with NYPD Red, a fabulous group of characters with heart and passion.
Released on November 25th, another fantastic edition to the series, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes.
Being a huge James Patterson fan, I’ve read Marshall Karp’s collaborations with Patterson (NYPD Red 1 thru 6), and was delighted to see the author finally get to solo with NYPD Red 7. In the eighth installment of the New York police’s special celebrity squad, expect that same great thrilling action and, in Patterson’s style, lots of short chapters often ending in little cliffhangers.
Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan are back as the detectives looking for a bomber with a grudge against New York and a precise striking hour, 11:59am. The main bomber story is compelling, but we get bogged down with an unsavory character from past installments. Kylie’s missing ex-husband, now sober Spence, makes an appearance to tell the duo about his grudge against a trendy director, who gets murdered a few hours after Spence threw a very public punch at him. Really, it’s time to have Spence disappear for good and free Kylie from his emotional clutches. If you’re new to the series, Spence might not be as annoying as I find him. Theo, Cheryl, and Shane are still worthy auxiliary characters.
Karp has mastered creating anticipatory anxiety as the detective duo finds themselves racing against a clock to disarm the next bomb. The last chapter, however, felt very unfinished. But another popcorn thriller for sure, with Patterson’s writing legacy influencing this series.. 4 stars.
Literary Pet Peeve Checklist: Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): NO Generally no eye colors at all. Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO But now I know that best place to place a untraceable call, from from the zillions of NYC street cameras, go to the center of the Sheep Meadow in Central Park.
Thank you to Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy!
This Action packed read gripped to me from the beginning and had an interesting premise, as we dove into the mind of the 1159 bomber. These strategic bombings left the city of NY in shambles, as the NYPD Red detectives search high & low before this notorious bomber claims more victims.
The story literally had me clutching my invisible pearls as I anxiously waited for detective Macdonald and Jourdan to catch this bomber! The audiobook had amazing narration, and both narrators did a phenomenal job magnifying the intensity to those crazy moments. Overall, a well written crime thriller that I enjoyed, and would recommend. My second read by this author & I am definitely becoming a Marshall Karp fan.
Marshall Karp returns with NYPD Red 8, and for longtime fans of the series. I have read all the books in this series to date. this installment is a welcome blend of high-stakes tension, procedural precision, and emotional depth . Now writing solo (without James Patterson), Karp proves he still knows how to deliver a tightly plotted thriller that doesn’t lose sight of its characters.
The premise is instantly gripping: a bomber striking at exactly 11:59 a.m. each day, choosing public targets in the heart of New York City. The ticking clock setup gives the novel a natural pace that’s both urgent and cinematic. Karp handles this time-based suspense well, creating a sense of dread as each day nears the fatal minute.
Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald, now deep into their careers and complex relationship, face not only a professional crisis but a personal reckoning as well. The case forces them to confront the emotional wear of being the city’s elite crime-fighting duo—often in the public eye but just as often in each other's way.
What sets this installment apart is the personal motive of the antagonist. The bomber isn’t just evil for spectacle. There's a tragic backstory behind the attacks, making the villain’s arc more than just chaos for chaos’s sake. Karp explores the gray area between justice and vengeance without slowing the pace.
Strengths:
Fast-paced and taut plotting
Emotional stakes tied to both heroes and villain
Strong chemistry between the leads
A frighteningly believable terrorist scenario
Minor Weaknesses:
Some procedural shortcuts feel a bit convenient
Character depth can take a backseat to plot momentum at times
Less flashy than earlier entries, but more grounded
Verdict:
NYPD Red 8 is a compelling continuation of the series that stands on its own while rewarding longtime readers. With its mix of crime, timing, and emotion, it proves Karp can still pack a punch without Patterson at his side. Not just a thriller—but a story with pulse and heart.
I gave this Story 4.5 Stars but rounded it up to 5 Stars and thoroughly enjoyed it. This proved Karp can Continue the series on his own and I am looking forward to many more of Zach, Kyilee , Captain Cates and now Theos adventures. I want to thank Mister Karp, Netgalley and the Blackstone Publishing Company For the advanced Copy of this book.
Thank you to Marshall Karp & Blackstone Publishing for the gifted ARC!
When I knew a new NYPD Red book was coming, I made it my mission to read all the books in the series before I started this one. They are all very quick, fast-paced reads and I highly recommend them to have the backstory you need for Zach & Kylie. Having said that, you could definitely start with NYPD Red 7 and be just fine.
This book is SO FREAKING SPECIAL to me - there is a whole character named after me!!! As a reader this feels like my personal Mt. Everest. It was the coolest thing to come across while reading, I cannot even put into words how meaningful of a gift it was. Thank you doesn't feel like enough to author Marshall Karp, but alas it's all I've got.
The same fast-paced, high stakes plot elements from the rest of the series were present in NYPD Red 8, but there's also an additional storyline (no spoilers) that had me in my feels a few different times.
I will continue to read (and rave about) everything Marshall writes!
"NYPD Red 8" by Marshall Karp is a high stakes 5-star crime thriller. Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan return in the eighth installment of the NYPD Red series. They are in pursuit of the elusive 11:59 Bomber while also navigating difficulties in their personal lives.
The story moves at a rapid pace and had me hooked from the opening pages, which has been true for every book in this series and is exactly why I keep coming back for more. The author skillfully weaves the detectives’ personal lives into the narrative without distracting from the main plot. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy short, action-packed chapters and an addictive crime thriller.
Thanks to Blackstone Publishing, Marshall Karp, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.
It’s 11:59. And the city that never sleeps is afraid to get out of bed. Those words are what made me want and need to know more! I am so grateful and honored to have been sent an ARC copy of NYPD Red 8 to read before it comes out on November 25th 2025. I received it in the mail, tore the package open and blew through it 2 days! Suspense, action, unforeseeable twists, characters with both heart and grit, it’s got it. Right from the start my jaw was on the floor. I literally said out loud to myself “Ok, we are just jumping right into the explosive chaos”! Fast paced with a story line that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat! Another 5 Star read from Marshall Karp! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pre order your copy NOW!
Apparently I’ve resurrected my police-procedural era from the dead, but only for Marshall Karp — because some authors get privileges. Full disclosure: I am not in my police-procedural era anymore. I burned myself out on them in my 20s when that was basically my entire personality. But Karp’s writing? I will always show up for that. My first 5⭐️ read of 2025 was Don’t Tell Me How To Die, and considering only about 3% of my reads ever earn that rating, it’s a big deal.
NYPD Red 8 reminded me why I love his work so much. Karp shines completely on his own here — the writing is crisp, addictive, and ridiculously easy to sink into. The pacing hits that perfect sweet spot where you swear you’re only reading one more chapter, and then suddenly it’s been an hour.
I loved the layers in this thriller, especially the twists, turns, and the way multiple threads are woven together without ever feeling overwhelming. And the setting? Finally, a book that actually feels like New York. I’ve read so many that claim the city but miss the vibe entirely — this one gets it right.
I also appreciated the psychological components and how the interpersonal relationships played out. It has a little bit of everything — action, tension, character nuance — and it honestly made me want to go back and read the earlier books in the series. Even though this was my first, I never felt lost or like I was missing key context. It’s surprisingly easy to jump right in.
If this is what the rest of the series is like, go ahead and consider me fully re-enlisted in the NYPD Red universe.
I fortunate to receive a complimentary eARC from Marshall Karp via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.
How I Rate Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.
⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me as it has way too many issues; I never DNF ARCs but would have had it not been one. ⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.
Another much anticipated book in the NYPD RED series. These are some of the most fast paced, edge of your seat books that are out there. The book is very New York, very authentic to the police procedural, with enough charm as you go with the two leads. Does it leave a lasting impact, maybe not, but it does give a thrilling experience in the moment.
Another non-stop action, suspense story with the Red team. I like the characters and the story kept me engaged. But trigger warning as the story was "domestic terrorists" setting off bombs all around NYC. Alternating POV's b/w the cops & the bomber. There's also a second case with Kylie and her ex-husband.
So I finally got around to reading this! And, I’m so happy that I did! I’ve loved Marshall Karps writing since he was co-writing with James Patterson! But now that he’s out on his own? Well, the books are just phenomenal!! And, the fact that they take place in NY… where I’ve lived all my life? Incredible!!
So, this is book #8 in the NYPD Red Series… and it does not disappoint! 💥 💣 💥
Just before a bomb goes off in a popular/crowded subway station, NY’s 911 operators receive a call stating that ‘NYC is going to pay, just like my parents did’ !! Of course they have no idea what the caller is talking about… until a minute later when the bomb goes off, at exactly 11:59am! And then all hell breaks loose…
Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan are brought into the loop to investigate. But the closer they seem to get to finding out some information, the further they actually are. It’s like they’re going in circles.
And, unfortunately, the next day, another bomb goes off in a crowded, well-known department store in NYC. And even more people are killed. And guess what time it happened? 11:59am…
As they are preparing for a third bomb the next day… although they have no idea WHERE it will happen, something strange happens. There is no bomb…. Are we done? Can we breathe again ??
Tune in to find out…
Also, while the bombings are happening…. Kylie’s husband, who’s been missing for some time now, appears at a movie premiere. The same one she and her partner are at… And just afterwards, he is threatening to kill someone. Unfortunately, that person IS DEAD the next day. And guess who’s arrested?
So, the two detectives are now looking for links to EITHER/BOTH cases!
And, the City That Never Sleeps is now afraid to leave their homes as these random bombings are occurring! And so many people are dying…
What an interesting story Mr. Karp weaves, as we learn about the bomber…his history… his family… his friends… his life. And how, when tragedy strikes, people are compelled to do things that they might never have even thought of before… and yet, here we are! And, the picture is painted so beautifully that you feel like you are right there, with the characters, among the chaos… and planning… and execution… right in the midst of NYC…
And, if you are like me, when the story ends… and you are actually amazed that one lingering thought still remains… and you get a little teary-eyed… well, don’t! Because he’s always got just ONE MORE TRICK up his sleeve!!!! And you’ll be blown out of the water… once again!! 💥
Very well done, Marshall Karp!! And, this is why I will always be reading whatever you are writing next!! 😉
5 blazing, scary, emotionally-scarred stars for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is an excellent series if you enjoy reading fast-paced action and intense situations. Marshall Karp started with James Patterson and now he’s continuing the series on his own and he is doing a most excellent job! In fact, I’m looking for more Marshall Karp books to read because he is an excellent writer.
A very good story with realistic insights into the criminal justice system as well as the mechanics of a police investigation. A timely read now. Especially resonant for one familiar with NYC and the Upper East Side in particular.
I was very excited to spot this on the library shelf and it did not disappoint. It’s been quite a while since I read something from the NYPD Red series but it did not take long to get reacquainted with Detectives MacDonald and Jordan. The plot was creative and moved at a fast pace. Keep them coming!
Fast paced and action packed. Great characters. A very well done police procedural that is great on audio. I enjoy this series and always look forward to the next installment.
Excellent book using the NYPD Red characters established from past books and continuation of these characters chasing after the 11:59 bomber striking fear In all of New York.
I’m a big fan of the NYPD Red books but the Kylie character is a little too much to take. She’s just the greatest thing since sliced bread and it’s gotten to be ridiculous. Concentrate more on the story and less on how beautiful and smart Kylie is portrayed.
I found the book very good. It kept me interested and entertaining. I would recommend the book to every one who likes murder mysteries. The ending was a surprise. You will enjoy the book.
