1944: A Gripping Supernatural Horror Thriller

Rate this book
Love and Revenge—Monsters and Mayhem—Dark Magic and Careful what you write for.

For troubled high-school student Ben Olson, life in the mild autumn of 1944 brims with the fears shared by every family in war-weary America. He longs for the safe return of his father, and the love of Annie Stewart, the girl of his dreams.

A budding writer, Ben finds an old typewriter in the attic, only to discover the Regal 8 is no ordinary one. It’s heavy, black, and mysterious, and shortly after typing a story on it—a story that contains a cartoonish sunflower—the very same sunflower appears in the attic. It’s certainly real, looks harmless enough, yet has a disgusting smell … and flourishes not in sunlight, but in darkness.

Ben quickly learns that if he types something he truly wants, the Regal 8 will create it and bring it to life. Its creations might not be perfect, never quite what they seem, yet he trusts that the impossible magic at his fingertips holds the power to change his life and the lives of those he loves. But as his best intentions soon sour, the remote island town of Castle Hill is overrun with those strange, cartoonish sunflowers … sunflowers that unleash something far worse than a sickening smell.

For Ben and Annie—and the town—they unleash hell.

In this story we start with an old man following a local news report about a bizarre incident which includes people losing their lives, he has a map with pins on it. I wonder what this is going to be about, I haven’t got a clue yet, but this has piqued my interest of turning those pages fast.

Past – 1944

We are now in the past with a 16-year-old boy called Ben Olsen in the little town of Castle Hill he is a high school student who has fears like everyone in the year of 1944. Ben is hoping soon that his dad will come back from the war safely. Ben is an avid writer, and his faithful typewriter has stopped working. He actually ends up finding one in the attic a Regal 8 in a weird chest, which later he finds out it belonged to his grandpa, it was hard locating the key as if his grandpa didn’t want anyone to find it. Also, there are journals in this chest too. But he felt that there was a tugging for Ben to use the Regal 8!!!

Ben is struggling at school, he is enduring the suffering with bullies everyday and he is filled with anguish. His best friend Beau and Emma are there to help him when they can, but they can’t support him every day. He soon realises that what he truly wants the typewriter can provide after he drew a picture of a sunflower and then one appears in the attic, but it stinks to high heaven, it has been brought to life by magic, the evil has its own agenda. But be careful what you want and wish for comes at a price he learns later. This could be his answer to everything, he is mad he is angry, and hell bent on revenge against the bullies, but how far will Ben go?

This book has everything for a horror reader there is friendship, love, guilt, revenge, pain and anguish, monster, magic and evil and very gory horrific scenes, I was even cringing at some of the graphic descriptions of the scenes🤢🤮🤢. Ben doesn’t realise and at what cost it will cost him to wish for what he truly wants, even Annie the love of his life. Ooooh not forgetting, sorrow and sadness too. Ben is out to do the right thing, Olsen’s always do the right thing don’t they.

As the story continues and escalates, I’m finding it hard to find the correct words. Ben has unleashed catastrophic consequences of evil, that causes havoc across the whole town of Castle Hill, even I was surprised OMG!!! 😱😱 It was unputdownable page turner. I ate the words and found I had digested the book in a few days. Never mind the Regal 8 calling Ben, this book was calling to me to read it when I wasn’t’ reading.

I have missed the writing style of this author, as addictive as always. Fantastic, gripping, horrific read. I didn’t want the book to end. Avery close contender, to Velvet Rain which is another book written by this author. Bloody loved it did I say that. Go on try a new author. I did many years ago with this author!!! ❤️❤️
