Tsukasa Hojo (北条司 Hōjō Tsukasa, born on March 5, 1959, in Kokura, Kitakyushu, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. He studied technical design while still at Kyushu Sangyo University, where he began to draw manga. He worked on several one-shot stories before releasing his serialized works: Cat's Eye, City Hunter and Angel Heart.

Hojo claims that he really did not have any inspiration for these works other than having to meet a deadline. He says he wrote down a few things, he thought about a few things, and one day the ideas just came to him, out of thin air. In reality, the process was a lot more complicated, with editors involved, but fans got the benefit of Hojo's sense of adventure and humor.

After the success of Cat's Eye and City Hunter, Hojo went on to work on other series such as Family Compo. His current ongoing series is Angel Heart, a spinoff of City Hunter set in an alternate universe. It has been serialized in the Weekly Comic Bunch since 2001 and 30 collected volumes has been published so far.

Tsukasa Hojo is Takehiko Inoue's mentor. Inoue worked as an assistant to Hojo during the production of City Hunter. Hojo is also a long-time acquaintance of Fist of the North Star illustrator Tetsuo Hara, who was also one of the founders of Coamix. Hojo contributed to the production Fist of the North Star: The Legends of the True Savior film series by designing the character of Reina.

He was honor guest of the eleventh French Japan Expo which was held in July 2010.

It really is criminal that it took this long for Cat's Eye to get an English translation. It's not even my favorite Tsukasa Hojo series (that would be his short story collections), but it really is foundational and a fun title in its own right. Content warning for 1980s-style sexism, which Hojo does seem fully aware of and uncomfortable with, even as he uses it.

My thanks to NetGalley and Abrams ComicArts Kana for an advance copy of this graphic novel collection about three sisters with an incredible set of skills running their own business in Japan, by day successful cafe owners, by night art thieves wanted by every member of the police force.

I was too old and manga and anime became entrenched in the American psyche. I had tried to keep up, but my prime collecting years were way before the Internet, even before the rise of DVD's. I had to hunt through collections hoping for a vaguely English translation, and remember that the books read in a different way. As I have tried to stay current I keep finding myself looking to the past, the inspiration for many of the most popular works today. Which is why I am thankful for Kana for the work the have done in translating and bring one of the more popular series in manga to the states, so it can be fully appreciated. Cat's Eye Omnibus Volume 1 written and illustrated by Tsukasa Hojo tells of a three sisters, their cafe, love of cats, one sister's love life, and the numerous acts of thievery the young ladies perform.

Japan is riveted to a series of art crimes committed by someone known only as Cat's Eye. Cat's Eye alerts the police and owners that a theft will happen, and when. Even with all the work done by Toshiro a police inspector, Cat's Eye has never been bested or stopped. Toshiro is getting aggravated, something he shares with his girlfriend Hitomi and her two sisters, at the Cat's Eye a cafe they own. Hitomi comforts her high school boyfriend, but has a secret. She and her sister are Cat's Eye and they steal for family reasons. And really can't stop, no matter what it might do to Toshiro's career, something that is starting to bother Hitomi. As their thefts continue, Cat's Eye will have to deal with a smart female detective, a rival gang and a gentleman thief who has eyes on Hitomi, and a plan to steal her heart, as well as whatever he can get.

A fun series, filled with food, cats, heists, plans and a lot of adolescent comments about women. Tsukasa Hojo was also the creator of the City Hunter series, and was aiming at a particular market, the ones who don't get women, in any way. That said the humor is a well old and rude, but can be ignored, as the well Cat's Eye make up for it. The stories are fun, misdirection, clever ways to steal things, and characters that seem a little stiff, but begin to develop in different ways. The art is excellent. Tsukasa Hojo can draw a cat, paintings, grappling hooks and even cafe counters quite well. The art is good girl art, but done with a more a realistic touch.

I was surprised at how much I liked the series, a good mix of light stories, with action and sometimes a rude comment can be funny. I am glad that I finally found out what all the fuss was about Cat's Eye and I can't wait to catch up and read more.

Hmm, Cat's Eye is an interesting choice, since the series is from the 1980s. It's always wonderful when old series are translated, but in most cases time does what it does to them. The manga is a mystery manga centering around these three sisters that work in a cafe called Cat's Eye. At the same time Rui, Ai and Hitomi are art thieves by night. Not only that, but Hitomi dates a police officer that wants to expose these criminals. There's no real plot in a sense, but more like occurrences and humor to go along with it. The series is an epitome of the time, really. It's a good thing, but at the same time it's sexist and something you couldn't do anymore. If you keep that in mind, the manga is light and crazy even, which makes this wonderfully carefree.

The art is what you expect of course, but still well done. Gladly there's no ecchi elements as such. The story feels slightly naive and this is shounen of course, but still. As a secret door to the past this works and is harmless - capable female main characters are always a plus!

An excellent omnibus edition of Tsukasa Hojo's original masterworks. Hojo is not easy to translate, and I have seen prints that made the art almost unbearable — the Abrams edition is none of those things, and it is a pleasure to re-read this blast from the past.

The plotline is simple — the Kisugi sisters are secretly the cat burglar gang "Cat's Eye", who steals exclusively artworks by artist Heinz in an attempt to locate their long-lost father. Hitomi's fiancee is also the detective chartered with catching the gang — and their café is also named Cat's Eye, because obviously... never mind. It is a funny and simple story that never fails to enchant the reader. Hojo-san's art is not as refined in the later Citi Hunter years, but it is still quite well executed — especially considering this manga is piling on pages by the hundreds!

Net Galley Honest review
This was an enjoyable read featuring strong female main characters and a great sense of family bond. A family of thieves with close ties to the very police trying to catch them makes for such a fun premise! This series has been around for a while, and you can tell in some aspects, but overall it’s an easy and entertaining read with an art style that really adds to the story.

lost a star to the blatant rampaging sexism (thanks 1983) but otherwise I adore this
